Hi everyone. My name is Mustafa Obeidat, and I am the new Med Times Representative for this year. Firstly, I would like to thank Kusheim, founder of the Med Times, for giving me the oppor-tunity and trusting me to run the newslet-ter he started from scratch.

Secondly, in accordance to a request from Kusheim, I will attempt to make the newsletter more student oriented, by featuring topics of interest to students, and more impor-tantly, by featuring student submitted content! The New Apple iPad Reviewed!

By: Ammar Awad ■ Apple has made a huge comeback in recent years, especial since the introduction of the iPod. So what has Steve Jobs been cooking up at Cupertino head quarters lately? As he calls it, "a revolutionary new device that fills the gap between our phones and our laptops." A 9.7' tablet called the iPad. During the unveiling keynote back in January, I was with the masses of apple fan boys that felt short changed. Af-ter months of rumors and anticipation, fans expected some-thing that will blow them away. What Steven Jobs walked on stage with was a pound and half slate that ran on a similar OS of the iPhone. With no notable features such as multitasking and webcam, it was alluded to as an oversized iPod Touch. But leave it to Apple to slowly draw you in. At first, I did not see the point of buying one. My iPhone fulfills all my computing needs when out and about and my Macbook completes the rest of my duties when at home. I should point out that one of the main reasons I bought a Macbook was because of its slim profile. During the agonizing wait of the iPad's April 3rd release, Apple started to slowly release tutorials, lists of affiliated companies, and iPad ready applications that got me thinking, what would I use the iPad for?

And during my "study time", a flood of ideas hit me. I could leave the Macbook behind for the heavy tasks like video editing, Photoshop, and so on; shedding the six lb. of weight from my already heavy bag. I could use the iPad to record and jot down quick notes during class without being distracted with other applications (Chuck that up to the lack of multitasking). It is an unlimited media database especially with the addition of ABC and NBC TV series, Netflix movie streaming. and possibly Hulu, and that is only enhanced with the ten hour battery life. The iWorks package that can be downloaded from the App store is phenomenal. If you are the average surf and work type laptop person, the iPad could possibly replace your note-book. iWorks is similar to Microsoft Office where you can cre-ate word documents, power points, and spreadsheets all with multitouch gestures. Not only that but you can give for exam-ple PBL presentations while using you finger as a pointer to explain things to your colleagues. However, the big new feature on the iPad is its Book-store. Currently there are 60,000 books available for download with a real reading experience. When textbooks become avail-able, you can cramp all those back aching booking in the half inch thick device. Not only that, but you will have the ability to look up words, save bookmarks, and best of all interactive me-dia embedded in the text! In addition, newspapers such as the New York Times and magazines such as Sports Illustrated have converted to the digital medium, it is only a matter of time be-

The App store has already been a huge success with the iPhone with over 150,000 applications. Currently on my phone I have a few medical applications that have been very beneficial during my clinical sessions. Imagine the possibilities with the larger screen The possibilities are endless! So will I be camping outside an Apple store comes April 3rd? Probably not, since there is not an offi-cial apple store in the Kingdom, but expect me to visit one as soon as I land in Detroit.

House MD: Busted! By: Bara AlMakadma The purpose of this article is to highlight a few unrealistic elements of the TV series HOUSE MD ■ Dr Laugel, writes in science.org: “In a recent television episode of House, physicians cavalierly set out to sacrifice a young boy’s life to save his leukemic brother, without regard to the usual ethical restraints a hospital would have in place. A renegade surgeon straps the un-anaesthetized boy onto a stretcher to extract his bone marrow and viciously plunges a large bore needle into the child’s abdomen (instead of his hip bone), and then again into the boy’s chest while the child screams and flails (and apparently, no one hears).” And YES the boy pulls through as Laugel puts it. OK! The “surgeon”, Forman at the time (surprisingly enough) was the hero of the episode, the criminal in reality who digs a large needle into a boys abdomen rather than hip-bone, for bone marrow – not to mention there was no anaesthesia. Further, in real life, the ‘neurologist’ wouldn’t have conducted the procedure per-fectly, because he is a ‘neurologist’! That reminds me of how in the latest season, Wilson, the Oncologist, becomes an ER physician as soon as his friend is in the ER! It is actually rather funny to mention this mistake, since it is negligible. Another flaw in the series is that House’s team consists of consultants, and are not haematology, microbiology, or any lab technicians, but somehow they read radiographs (of course I don’t mind House reading the full body scan MRI pictures, he is supposed to be smart, and I would like to think that Al-faisal students can do the same in the future!). However, conducting all these MRIs, lab tests.. for the love of God! Obviously, House’s team realizes that infections effect patients, since they keep scavenging for pathogens, but when they have a patient’s brain open, picking out some tissues (ep. 22, of Season 3), the doctors are not even wearing masks. The patient survives, and no complications... yeah right! Another important note: ask a first year Medical student, given that they take Microbiology, and they would tell you that toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasitic infestation (single cell protozoa; Toxoplasma gondii), and not a fungus,; while House explains it is a “fairly common fungus from eating undercooked meat or touching cat feces” (season 1, ep. 17) Probably the show’s biggest mistake was to disregard the adverse effects of Vicodin, which contains hydrocodone, but

also contains acetaminophen. As Dr Aljedai (pharmacology instructor) in our 2nd year pharmacology tutorial had made clear,

acetaminophen is one of the drugs with known liver toxicity. With the huge amounts House used to consume up until season 6,

he probably should have been dead in season 2! They should have used something like a morphine tablet, or was morphine an

old cliché that even Harper Lee managed to use in her To Kill a Mockingbird? Finally, not to mention that with the history of drug

abuse, when House’s heart stopped in the end of season five, and Cuddy resuscitated him, he probably should not have been

resuscitated, especially that Cuddy’s mouth-moth technique was more like kissing that it was a resuscitation, because she did not

even hold his nose closed, which meant that not all the poorly oxygenated air from her lungs reached his lungs! Maybe a profes-

sional skills class would do!

4th Medical Career Day at King Fahad Cultural Centre

An “Isteraha” Day

■ Under the Patronage of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the 4th Medical Career Day was held on the 24th and 25th of February, 2010 at King Fahad Cultural Center. The event’s aim was to introduce the opportunities that medical, dental, and pharmaceutical stu-dents can get inside and outside the Kingdom, allowing them to choose and set a path for their future, which fits their inter-ests and abilities, in order to enable them to serve their com-munities in the best and most productive way. The event was organized by King Saud bin Abdukaziz University for Health Sciences.

The event hosted many speakers from KSA, Canada, USA, and Australia; those shared their experience over the years, presented valuable advices about different specialties, and answered many concerns and inquiries from the ambi-tious students who attended the event over two days. The talks covered wide range of topics that are essential to all health sciences students.

Alfaisal University had a stand at the exhibition of medical universities and colleges that was held also at King Fahad Cultural Center, throughout the two days of the event. Faculty and Students from the College of Medicine answered many inquires about Alfaisal University in general, the PBL system, the Clinical training, and many other specific concerns about the College of Medicine and the advantages it gives to many prospective students and interested visitors from other universities, which was a chance for Alfaisal medical students to interact and build relations with medical students from all over the Kingdom. Alfaisal students have attended, and en-joyed the lectures by pronounced national and international speakers, where they have learned many tips and advices for

By Aman Inayah ■ On Thursday, 8 of April, our colleague Abdullah Ashammari ar-

ranged an “Isteraha” day at Thumamah at Riyadh Northern district. About 15 students of the second year, college of medicine came and en-joyed their day after their first week of Reproductive block, in addition to some faculty who were the guests of honor on the day.

The day started late in the morning, with some chatting till all the attendees came. Later, some students went into swimming, while others started playing some casual volleyball. A barbecue Lunch was served af-ter. In the afternoon, everyone started playing all types of card games, since they had to enjoy relaxing after the meal. Late afternoon, some continued their games, while others started a match of soccer.

After sunset, some deserts that were brought by the faculty and our colleague, Yousef Al-Najashi were served. Later, a mini tournament of volleyball started and continued till late night.

The day ended with a lot of good memories to remember for at

least the next few weeks.

How long do you study each day? It depends. Regular days, an average of 2-3 hours on week-days, and it can reach up to 10 hours on weekends In exam times, sometimes I wake up at Fajr, and sleep at 11:00pm, studying the whole day through. This happens three or four days before the exams, I can't push myself more than that. How much time do you have for yourself each day? How much time do you take off? For myself? two hours. The rest of the time is between study-ing and having fun What do you do for fun? I'm not sure. I watch news, read my e-mails, chat with friends. How many hours of sleep do you get each day? Before ex-ams and after? Before exams, six hours, during exams, about 5 hours. Not a big difference. I believe that I have to sleep, even if I'm not finished.

Alfaisal Leadership: Getting to Know the KFSH Faculty with Dr. Al-Hokair

What field of Medicine are you a part of? Infectious Disease. Why did you choose this specialty? I Find it attractive, it is broad-spectrum, it integrates our various disciplines, involves all systems of the body, and is challenging. Where did you attend Medical School? I got my MBBS at King Saud University Where did you complete your professional training? I got the ABIM in the States, Canadian fellowship of in-fectious diseases in Canada, Post Doctoral Fellowship in Microbiology at UCLA, and finally, Post Doctoral Fellow-ship in Medical Education. I really love Academia. What do you think of Alfaisal University? This is my second year with them. Theoretically, it seems to be a modern way of teaching. We are waiting to see more and more in the academic years, you are still in the basic sciences, so I’m looking forward to it. Would you like to add any thoughts? I am happy about the interaction of the students. It is always a two-way discussion rather than somebody giv-ing a lecture; the way it’s supposed to be. I hope the students continue to have interactive sessions, and I’d concentrate more on self teaching, rather than being learners from somebody teaching them.

What are your hobbies? Swim, Play football, read; not a lot though. What do you plan for after Alfaisal? Residency Where and in what field? I hope in King Faisal. I'm not thinking of going abroad, but if I had to, that’s the way it is. Do you have any study techniques? Attend every lecture and pay attention. Sometimes I enjoy lectures that everyone else hates. Anything you want to say? Your voice . This is not my level. This is from Allah, and I am not any better than everyone else.
