From P1…

In P1 you should call the basic idea of ultrasound including idea of the reflection of sound. Let’s review this first.

In P3…

We are looking at the specific medical uses of ultrasound.

• Measuring the dimensions of the human eyeball• Treating kidneys stones using lithotripsy

Diagnosing problems with the eye

Remember the long-sighted and short-sighted problems?

It could be due to problems with the cornea or lens. It could also be because of the shape of the eyeball itself (too short or too long).

The graph shows how the intensity of ultrasound waves of different frequencies decreases as they penetrate soft tissue.

Estimate how far a 2 MHz wave has penetrated into the soft tissue when its intensity is 25% of its original value.

Lithotripsy

This technique is use to treat a medical problem rather than diagnose it. Here the ultrasound waves are focused into a small area and are use to break down kidney stones (or gall stones).

Kidney stones are solid crystals that can build up in the kidneys (made from calcium etc).

Lithotripsy

A shockwave is produced by the intense ultrasound pulses so the stones are broken down and so can pass down into the bladder and out safely through excretion of urine (going to the toilet for a wee).

Treating muscle damage

The ultrasound pulses cause objects to move back and forth very quickly. This can cause friction and therefore heat. Ultrasound can be focused onto muscles. The localised heat will improve blood flow to the area and encourage faster healing.
