Aim The medical/ surgical lab aims at teaching and training students the nursing skills necessary to provide comprehensive care for adult patients suffering from a variety of medical or surgical disorders. Mission Preparing nursing graduates qualified in the care of the adult patient according to the highest standards of nursing care Objectives

x Providing students with basic and advanced nursing skills necessary for adult nursing care.

x Developing students’ skills for dealing with advanced technology and equipment.

x Facilitating transition to actual clinical settings. x Enhancing students understanding of the clinical skills

necessary for providing comprehensive nursing care for the adult patients.

x Enhancing teamwork and communication skills. x Provide hands-on learning experiences specific to course

objectives as directed by the nursing curriculum. x Developing clinical judgment through scientific inquisition

and critical thinking and problem solving x Disseminate a culture of safe nursing practice by enhancing

the universal standards precautions and rules of safety in practicing clinical nursing and reinforcing it’s role as an indicator of quality in healthcare and the continuing development in evidence- based nursing practice.

5 Withdraw medication from a vial or ampule. 6 Provide for privacy. Have the patient assume a position appropriate

for the site selected. Ventrogluteal - the patient may lie on the back or side with hip knee flexed (It is safe site for all patients and preferred injection site for adult).

7 Don disposable gloves. 8 Clean the area thoroughly with an alcohol swab. Allow alcohol to

dry.

9 Remove the needle cap by pulling it straight off.

10 Displace the skin in a Z-track manner or spread the skin at the site using your non-dominant hand.

11 Hold the syringe in your dominant hand between the thumb and forefinger. Quickly dart the needle into the tissue at a 90- degree angle.

12 Aspirate slowly to determine whether the needle is in a blood vessel.

13 If no blood is aspirated, inject the solution slowly (10 seconds per ml of medication).

14 Place a gauze pad over the puncture site and slowly and gently remove the needle at 90-degree angle.

15 Apply gentle pressure at the site with a small, dry sponge. 16 Discard the needle and syringe in the sharp box. 17 Assist the patient to a position of comfort. 18 Remove gloves and dispose them properly. Wash your hands. 19 Record the administration of the medication and evaluate the

response of the patient to the medication within an appropriate time frame.

4. Carry inside only the prescribed items to the lab, Example: Blue/Black Pen/Pencil/Eraser/Scale/Procedure Manual

5. Strictly no noise to be made inside the Labs

6. No student is allowed to handle any items in the lab without the respective Teacher

7. Always be Professional in all activities while inside the Nursing Laboratories

8. No valuables to be kept inside the Labs, You are responsible for the loss of your valuables

9. Respect one another and treat the Manikin/Simulator as live patients, do not mishandle any items in the Lab.

SAFETY POLICIES AND GUIDELINES OF CLINICAL SKILLS LABORATORY

1. The faculty, demonstrator or clinical instructor must log before and after usi ng any laboratory equipment. Failure to log means that the equipment was not properly returned to its proper place. The respective log book is in the custody of the respective lab manager.

2. It is not allowed to transfer any equipment from one lab to another without the permission of the respective lab manager.

3. In case equipment or manikin will be used outside the College of Nursing campus, permission should be sought from the Clinical Simulation Lab Coordinator who in turn will inform the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs for final approval.

4. Students are not allowed to manipulate any equipment without faculty or instructors supervision. 5. Students are not allowed to be in the lab without the respective instructor and the doors will not be

open without the presence of the respective instructor. 6. All equipment and supplies have to be revised before the procedure by the respective instructor. 7. Supplies and equipment’s are not allowed to be requested by students to the lab managers, it is the

responsibility of the instructor to provide them to the students, if and when needed. 8. The request form for the supplies and equipment to be submitted 3 days prior to the date of the

procedure. 9. The lab managers will inform instructors of unavailable supplies and equipment. 10. Lab managers will help in providing supplies and equipment for training the students in the skills

lab, it will be arranged by the respective instructors at the same time complete, clean and in order according to the procedures they will demonstrate for their students.

11. The laboratory should be kept clean and in proper order at all times. The faculty or instructors who use the lab must ensure that litters are properly disposed of, whiteboard cleaned after use, equipment kept clean and chairs are arranged as a courtesy for the next user.

12. Any equipment or furniture used should be returned clean, in proper form )e.g. manikin parts are assembled in case it was not assembled),and in proper place ready for the next user.

13. The skills lab equipment should be used with care by all faculty and instructors and encourage the students to do the same.

14. Should there be any loss, breakage or malfunctioning of any equipment or furniture occurred during the laboratory hours, the faculty or instructor using the laboratory must submit a written incident report to the respective lab manager, who in turn will submit the same to the clinical skills lab coordinator for further action.

15. Never plug any equipment when in doubt of its electrical voltage. 16. Strictly no eating or drinking inside the skills lab. 17. The faculty or the instructor who use the skills lab should be the last person to leave the skills lab

after training of students to ensure that everything is in proper order. 18. The faculty or instructors who use the skills lab must ensure that the above policies and guidelines

are strictly followed during laboratory hours. 19. The skills lab door codes must not be revealed to any unauthorized persons. 20. Respect and cooperation among all members of the Clinical simulation lab community will ensure

the operation of daily tasks in smooth and professional manner.
