Memorial Libraries Strategic Plan

• Three Frameworks of the Strategic Plan

• Teaching & Learning

• Public Engagement

• Research

• Research Framework Goal

• Provide faster access to more scholarly monographs

• To be accomplished within the existing budget allocation

Page 7: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

Demand Driven Acquisitions with YBP

• Memorial Libraries main monograph vendor

• Able to use the three ebook aggregators: EBSCO, ebrary

& EBL

• Profiling options available to design a detailed DDA plan

that best reflects the needs of Memorial’s Library

• The DDA plan would work in conjunction with the Library’s

existing slip approval plans

Page 8: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

Demand Driven Acquisitions with YBP

• The Library’s DDA activity is visible in the GOBI title

notification so selectors can make informed decisions

about potential purchases

• Having DDA records automatically generated by the

profile every week ensures that the consideration pool is

consistently up to date

• Manual DDA option also permits selectors to add titles to

the consideration pool

Why a Mediated Approach?

• Identify, and hopefully resolve, any problems quickly

• Prevent accidental duplication of ebook purchases

• Allow more flexibility to choose a preferred ebook platform

when making purchases

• Less restrictive or DRM free options preferred, if available

Control

Page 13: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

DDA Profiling

• Developed from the Library’s slip approval plans

• Book approval plans = expanded

• Slip approval plans = scaled back

• Single system wide DDA plan incorporating the teaching

and research priorities of the four branch libraries

• LC vs. NLM classification

• Broad subject coverage including almost all of the LC

classes

Page 14: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

DDA Profiling

• Includes specific instructions on a variety of non-subject

parameters (i.e., content level, format, etc.)

• Publisher and series excludes built into the plan to

attempt to prevent duplication with the Library’s

purchased or subscribed ebook packages

• Price cap: list price $175 US

• Duplication between print & ebook formats is permitted

• Profile (v.2) created Summer 2013 and, like any approval

profile, continues to be revised as necessary

Page 15: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

Record Enhancement

• EBL, EBS or EBR prefix UID in 001

• Added proxy prefix 856

• Added MUN users only 856

• MUNDDA – 949

• Fund Code – 960

• TOC content added - 970

The Records Load

• Weekly

• July 2013 – present

• Retro

• December 2013

Page 17: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

DDA – STL to Perpetual

• Library patron triggers an STL by accessing and

exploring/downloading an ebook

• Following the 3rd STL, the Library purchases a perpetual

ebook (1 simultaneous user)

• Automated vs Manual

Page 18: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

The Mediated Approach

• Acquisitions staff notes each STL in the ILS and

associates it with a subject fund

• When the third STL occurs the descriptive record is

shadowed in the ILS

• GOBI is searched to determine if the title is available for

purchase directly from the publisher

• An order is placed with YBP for the ebook on the

publisher’s or aggregator’s platform as available

• Aggregator who supplied DDA access is contacted to

request removal of the title, or the administrative site is

accessed, to remove the title from the DDA pool

Page 19: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

DDA Statistics

• 26,000 DDA records in ILS

• 2040 STLs occurred

• Total $ spent on STLs = $34,059.03

• Average cost per STL = $ 16.71

• 85 titles purchased

• Total $ spent on perpetual purchases = $10,167.77

• Average cost per purchase = $101.50

Page 20: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

Maintenance

• Tracking STL activity in the ILS

• Monitoring STL & list price costs

• Shadowing & removing records in the ILS and

aggregator’s admin site

• Due to publisher’s change in distribution rights

• Due to increase cost of STL

• Because we opt to buy to ebook

• Duplication with one of our ebook packages

• Notify YBP to update GOBI history

Page 21: Mediated Demand Driven Acquisition: Method or Madness?

Benefits of Mediation

• Caught rising STL costs early in the process

• Have caught invoicing errors

• Have caught errors in notifications from aggregators

• Have purchased 25% of titles on the publishers platform

• Have prevented purchasing duplicates
