Question 2
…HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
I feel that the majority of work I have produced for my music magazine
supports dominant ideas about the social group I have aimed my product at.
In today's society, the ideal look that girls aspire to have is the "indie" look.
Prime examples of this can be found on Tumblr where the girls on there are seemed to be perfect. They're all
beautiful with nice clothes and amazing, long hair and most girls in today's
society aim to look like this. I believe that the pictures I have used in my
magazine fit this image, especially the photo I have used on my front cover.
In the next few slides, I have included some examples of pictures I found on Tumblr and in the eyes of a teenage girls nowadays, the
girls in these pictures are the definition of perfect...
I feel as though the outfit I chose for Erin(the girl in my pictures) fits this
hipster/indie criteria which will catch the eye of my target audience.
I think my double page spread would appeal to my target audience the most. The indie look is quite vintage and connotations of vintage is often classic and simple and I feel my double page spread fits this look the most. I like the plain colours and layout with a hint of pastel pink in it as it’s not too bright. The font I have used is also quite classic.
The piece I feel that challenges dominant ideas about my social
group the most is my front cover.…
Opposed to my double page spread, the front cover of my music magazine uses quite bold colours and text. I felt that this was necessary as it would need to catch someone’s eye in a newsagents. And among all the other magazines available, keeping it too simple wouldn’t be enough. Having said this, I still think it would appeal to my target audience as my magazine is aimed at teenagers meaning they’re young, modern and are more likely to pick up something bold that interests them than an old looking magazine with too much text, making it look more boring.
