How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Subverting a stereotype…

• Although we wanted our film to be very similar to other films that fall into the same genre, we wanted to subvert from the ever present stereotype that women are the weaker gender. We did this in a number of ways and in this section I will be explaining those ways.

Camera Angle

• The two still images below, from our film, come from the same scene in which Adam trips over a log and is confronted by an approaching Zombie. We had a low angle camera angle from Adam’s (Male) POV looking up at the zombie.

Camera Angle

• By doing this, the zombie appears to be in power and in turn, Adam appears to be weak and defenceless. In other horror films this type of scene is occurs but instead featuring a female and this puts a negative stereotype on the female gender.

Sound• In the scene below, we have a diagetic sound

of a Zombie groaning/growling. As the Zombie does this Adam hears it and runs in the opposite direction from which the sound came. This portrays the fact that Adam (male) is scared by the sound coming from the zombie.

Rest of the film…

• We would have definitely continued to support this subversion of stereotype in the rest of the film. The reason for this is that we feel strongly, as a group, about equality in gender and feel that women are stereotyped negatively too much in most horror films. Although we would have continued to support this subversion, we wouldn’t have too far as there needs to be a balance in order to make the film realistic and not solely one gender based.
