Throughout the short film that I created you can clearly see that there are

multiple uses of signs and codes to create an atmosphere and show theemotion that is in Dans life so that the audience can clearly identify with it andtherefore enjoy the messages in the film.

In the first scene you see some poppies amongst some grass. I identified thatthe poppies can be linked with opium, the drug. Poppies are used to makeopium and it can be said that to Dan, his girlfriend is his opium and she makes

him happy. Also throughout the film you see Dan become sadder. Thisidentifies that Dan has lost his opium and that is why poppies only feature inthe film in the beginning. Another point is that the colour of the poppy is red.Red symbolizes love and these poppies signify the love between Dan and hisgirlfriend. However, poppies are also linked to the end of World War One.Therefore poppies can be seen to symbolize great loss and this can be said tobe true in Dans case as he feels he has suffered a great loss in regard to himlosing his girlfriend.

In the next scene you see Dan about to call his girlfriend. In the middle of thescene you see Dans phone. This therefore draws the audiences towards thephone. This is good because it makes the audience understand what is aboutto happen in the scene and that is to call his girlfriend. Also in the scene you

see that there is a lack of foliage in comparison the previous scene. This lackof foliage signifies that there is a lack of life in the scene and this can signifythe loss in Dans life i.e. his girlfriend. As well as these previous scenes youcan see the use of a blackberry phone connotes many things, it conveys asense of modernism due to it being a brand new phone. The effect that thishas on the audience is that they can identify that the event being shown is in amodern time. In the background of the scene you see the concrete on thefloor. This portrays a sense of emotionless. Also it shows a harsh reality ofwhat will happen to Dan in the scene.

Inthe next scene you see Dan on the phone to his girlfriend. There are manysigns in this scene that convey differing things. One of these things is thatDan is poorly lit. This shows a lack of emotion and signifies that he is anegative presence due to him being dumped by his girlfriend. This can alsobe said for his face because you can see that he is looking down and he lookssad. This also shows his negative presence due to his situation.

The next scene is similar to the previous one but at a different angle. Thiscan show the different ways to look at Dans life. In this scene you see thefoliage in the background. It looks similar to the foliage in the previous scenehowever there is a distinct lack of poppies. This can signify that there is nolove left in Dan due to his situation with his girlfriend and that is why the red

poppies are not shown.

In the next scene there are other signs that symbolize different things. One ofthose things is Dans mouth opening. This can symbolize a release of breath.This can show that it is a relief to Dan now that he knows that he has beendumped and that he has predicted it for a while. This can show the emotionaltrauma Dan has gone through during his relationship and that he is nowrelieved it is over. Also you see Dan looking of into the distance. This can beportrayed as Dan looking back on his past. Or it can be seen as Dan lookingat his future and how it will happen without his girlfriend. This is not a socialconvention when you relate relationships with guys. They are normally seenas being heartless and uncaring for the other person in the relationship.However this is not the case in this film because you can clearly see that Danis affected by hat has happened to him and that has made him sad, thereforechallenging the stereotype about men in relationships.

In the next scene you see the camera looking down onto Dan. This can showDan as being small and pathetic. This is also seen by Dan being dumped byphone. This is a convention of how you would dump someone you, dont careabout. This challenges the stereotype that women are vulnerable and arealways getting hurt by men because as you can see in this scene the women

is the one who is hurting the man by showing she doesnt care about him.Also you can see that on the floor you see the white on the floor. This cansymbolize a blank canvas that Dan is starting his new life on without hisgirlfriend and that now he is capable of making new decisions to shape hislife.

In the last scene you continue to see Dan on the phone. He is coming to theend of his phone call and there are still signs being shown. An example ofone of these signs is Dan wearing a body warmer. You see that there is a lot

of sun in the scene. Due to this sun you would not imagine someone wearingsomething meant for the winter. This can show that he is cold inside due tohim being dumped and that he is now empty inside now that he has lost hisgirlfriend.

I conclude that this short film signifies lots of different codes and signs and itis these codes and signs that help the audience understand and gain adeeper knowledge about the film.
