Scotland’s No.1 for HEALTH & BEAUTY

Forget expensive salon treatments and designer conditioning products, the secret to getting your best hair ever could be in your next meal!

to better hair

HOW TO

Eat your way

Pack your diet with nutrients

It’s no secret that what you eat can directly affect your skin, and the same goes for your hair. Hair is made up of a protein called keratin, so if you notice any hair loss or thinning then adding more protein to your diet could be the way forward. Foods such as eggs, chicken and almonds can help with hair thinning without the need to turn to supplements and Celebrity Hair Stylist Phil Smith says they will boost hair follicles and

encourage growth.Thin hair could also be a sign that your body has low iron levels as the more it grows, the

more iron it needs. Thin hair can be common in vegetarians or women who have heavy periods, so introducing spinach and turkey into your diet will increase your iron levels and help red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body which will help to repair any damage.

And if you want that extra boost, it could be time to up your omega 3 intake.

These fatty acids reduce inflammation and nourish hair follicles, which encourages hair

growth and health. Salmon and avocados and are a quick and easy way of getting goodness

into your hair to help it stay shiny and healthy.

Carbs are crucial

While you shouldn’t expect to eat a salad and wake up with Rapunzel-length hair, nourishing snacks can get you one step closer to the strong hair you’ve always wanted. Nutrition has a huge impact on the health of the hair, and a poor diet can sometimes be the cause of excessive hair loss or why it’s not growing to the desired length.

Anabel Kingsley, Trichologist at Philip Kingsley, delivers some good news though and encourages us to eat carbs with every meal. Yes, you heard that right!

Now, of course we’re not suggesting you snack on chips all the time, but carbohydrates are essential to hair growth as they provide a steady release of energy to our hair follicles. Energy to form hair cells drops four hours after eating, so if longer than this is left between meals, then it can stop follicles from expanding. She suggests adding a slice of freshly baked wholemeal bread, pasta or rice to your daily meals to keep your hair growing at its optimum rate.

Expert’s secrets to perfect hair

Trichologist Sally-Ann Tarver reveals her top tips for giving your hair a health overhaul and getting your thickest and glossiest mane ever!

You are what you eat

Not only can foods be helpful for growing hair, but they can also help to maintain healthiness and support your scalp. Carrot juice (no, it won’t turn your hair orange!) will enrich your hair with its natural beta-carotenes and vitamin C, which will give added protection. Beta-carotene, found in carrots, also protects and fixes the damage of free radicals on our cells, meaning it can help reverse the signs of ageing!

THE HEALTHY HAIR KITIt can often be a combination of what your scalp is absorbing, and what the body is digesting internally that determines how strong your strands are.

This easy-to-use product contains vitamin E which will give hair an extra fighting layer against factors we often don’t have control of, such as the sun and environmental problems. BC sun Protect Spray Conditioner, Schwarzkopf £17.45

There are many uses for olive oil, you can also use it to achieve beautiful

and healthy hair! Olive Oil Mousse, ORS £4.29

In order to prevent further damage when styling, this product will help to guard strands. Prep Perfecting Spray, Philip Kingsley £20

Celebrity Hair Stylist Phil Smith says that when used on hair, coconut oil can improve scalp health and support hair growth, while adding volume and shine without harmful chemicals. Coconut Oil, Vita Coco £5.99

Did you know?

Research shows that lack of vitamin B, especially B12, can

speed up the hair greying process. To up your intake, eat

foods such as cod, milk, eggs and salmon.

Blowdry with care or dry naturallyHairdryers can become so hot it is actually possible to burn large pieces of hair. Use your dryer on a medium heat and high speed, not a high speed and high heat. Check the air intake vent is cleaned regularly as hairdryers become warmer if the motor has to work harder to suck in air. They also become hotter with age so it’s best to replace it every five years.

Give your hair a weekly treatIntensive repair masks can also help

improve hair condition, particularly if it is damaged due to heat

or colour. If your locks are feeling dry, dehydrated

and frizzy, take a handful of coconut oil and rub it onto fingertips then smooth it through the mid-lengths and

ends then leave it on overnight. Wash and

condition your hair as normal the next day and your

hair will look sleek for the next few washes.

FASH PACKSTOLEN FROM THE

A few simple tweaks to an outfit can elevate your look from drab to fab!

1. Roll ‘EM up Give an understated blazer a fashion forward new look simply by folding up your cuffs. If the cuffs are too thick to fold neatly, simply use a hair-band just below the elbow to push up the sleeves instead. Et voilà you now have a look favoured by the fashion editors.

2. Shrug Your shoulders

5. Belt up There are so many ways to wear a scarf, but which will garner you the most style points? We love this look debuted on the Burberry catwalks of autumn/winter’14.

4. the Half tuck Stop an oversized jumper or shirt from swamping your frame and making you look far larger than you actually are, by tucking a small section into the front of your waistband. It highlights the waist and makes a casual outfit look more stylish.

3. Rock daytimesparkleThe key to wearing sequins before cocktail hour is to pair with casual pieces in warm textures.

Off the shoulder, cold shoulder... Shoulders have been big news for some time in the fashion industry – but for the fashion experts it’s all about the shoulder shrug. Balance your coat on your shoulders without using your sleeves to nail fashionista chic.

Begin with the basicsWhile it is never anyone’s favourite task, clearing out your kitchen cupboards can be a very rewarding one. Start by throwing out anything that’s been there since you first moved in and only re-stock the ones you regularly use. Also, don’t hold onto anything that you definitely won’t use until next Christmas. The new year is not the time to be hoarding half-used jars of cranberry sauce so it is best to use it up now or lose it.

Move things aroundIf an item keeps popping up in the wrong spot, consider moving it to a new home. For example, if your oven mitt constantly makes its way out of the drawer that it is supposed to ‘live’ in, consider moving it closer to somewhere it’s always used, such as a hook next to the oven.

Streamline your storageFor a stylish and sustainable make-over, airtight labelled jars create a clean and polished finish. They not only keep your snack and pantry items fresher for longer, but they also maximise space and make it easy to see when items need to be replenished. This crafty shift will keep you on top of things and make your shelves look lovely. A total win!

KITCHEN

Create symmetryIn order to restore a sense of harmony in your kitchen, which is often the most utilised space in your home, balance out the room with symmetry. For example, something as simple as two identical plants on either side of a sink can create a minimalistic vibe and draw the eye towards them, away from any counter top clutter.

Test it outNot sure what you use and what you don’t in your kitchen? Start by emptying the contents of your kitchen utensils drawer into a cardboard box. For one month, put a utensil back into the drawer only if you take it out of the box to use it. If it’s still in the box after another month – you don’t need it and it could be time to part with it.

Start smallBegin by making a quick sweep of your whole house and clearing away all of the obvious clutter, including items that need to go in the bin or be recycled. This step should be easy, lightning fast and get you motivated to do the rest of the house. Put on upbeat music, grab a few bin bags and set a timer for around 15 minutes for a short, sharp clutter-busting spree!

Create storage for everythingFrom the moment anyone first steps into your home, the hallway creates an impression of the house. In order to keep it as streamlined as possible, avoid jackets being thrown on the ground or bags being left to be tripped over, and instead find a place for everything. Sturdy hooks on walls work well for coats, dog leads and bags. In order to encourage everyone to utilise them and break old habits, make sure the hooks are mounted within easy reach. Additionally, shoe shelves or labelled baskets will do the trick to store any shoes that get kicked off at the front door.

Create a focal pointCoffee tables are often the main focus of your living room and, as tempting as it may be to add lots of decorations, such as books,

candles or flowers, you should aim to keep it as clear as possible. To give the illusion that a room is clutter-free and streamlined, styling experts say the top of any coffee table should be 75 percent clear.

Store it awayIf you have knick-knacks that you really can’t part with, look for some stylish storage. Instead of placing them on top of the coffee table, look for one that has a built in chest of drawers. Alternatively, opt for a design with shelves for items such as remote controls or chargers. A wooden chest can be also used to store items, like laptops and tablets, and also double as a small side table for a lamp beside the sofa.

Follow the rule of threeWhile open shelves along the wall can look amazing on Pinterest, in reality they can often be difficult to decorate. In order to prevent shelves looking cluttered, restrict non-book items, such as vases or candles, to a maximum of three per shelf and coordinate the pieces by colour or pattern. This will help to keep your living room streamlined as too many items on display can attract the eye towards them and make the room appear messier than it actually is.

Keep it fresh and lightAlthough the items you leave lying around are largely responsible for clutter, your décor can make a huge difference to how tidy your home feels too. Make use of lighter

shades, such as cream or yellow, on the walls to keep your rooms feeling fresh, bright and clean. Additionally, use tie backs to hold heavy curtains away from the window in order to allow natural light to filter through. Although curtains can create warmth in a room during winter months, pinning them back will allow for a more spacious feel overall.

Don’t cram everything inIf your living room is lacking in space, don’t overdo it when it comes to furniture or decorations. Too many chairs, tables and lamps can make the room feel cramped, whereas if you pick three key pieces, such as a sofa, coffee table and TV, it can help to free up more space and create the illusion of a bigger room.

Think about photo framesMismatched photo frames littered around the room often make your house appear cluttered and off balance. Instead, invest in matching or colour coordinated frames to create a sense of harmony and a sleek finish in the room.

HALL AND LIVING ROOM

DID YOU KNOW?Studies have proven

that clutter can actually hamper

your ability to focus, think and process

information. It fogs your brains, overloads

your senses and can sometimes negatively

impact mood and self-esteem.

DID YOU KNOW?Maintaining a tidy home can actually

make you healthier, says Psychology

Today. They found that people who kept their homes

clean were physically healthier and more

active than those with messy abodes.

TOP TIPDon’t just clear your kitchen,

clean it too. Our freezers often go untouched, so use this January to give them a

good scrub. Use warm water and vinegar to clean the shelves for a gleaming

finish.

Specialising in wedding wear, Maggie of Bear Necessities said: ”Mother of the bride and groom choices are now very fashion led and, although we do some beautiful and more conventional labels like Condici and John Charles, which are always popular, we like to try and find labels that are a bit edgier and daring.

“One example of this is Fely Campo (pictured right), which is always surprising and inventive with beautiful and unusual colours and fabrics.”

The collections stocked at this Scottish fashion boutique are also brought in from all over the world to ensure customers can sample the most up to date trends.

For example, shoppers who are looking for a wedding guest outfit are well catered for with collections from Greece and the United Kingdom, and mother of the bride and groom collections travel from as far as Spain and Italy.

The store itself is also situated over two floors, with the mother of the bride and groom boutique on the ground floor, and the special occasion and eveningwear department on the first floor.

This allows shoppers to choose a specific area to visit and find what you’re looking for in hardly any time.
