Ex Oprah School Employee Arrested on Abuse ChargeFRIDAY NOVEMBER 02, 2007 11:45 AM EDT UPDATED

By Stephen M. SilvermanPolice in South Africa have arrested a former employee at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy on charges of physical and sexual abuse, a police spokesman tells CNN.

Lungelo Dlamini, the police superintendent in Johannesburg, says that on Monday the former school matron, whose name has not been disclosed, is due in Sebokeng Magistrate Court, which is responsible for cases involving family violence, child protection and sexual offenses.

The suspect stands accused of physical abuse against girls at the school, as well as soliciting them for indecent acts, says the CNN report.

The South African newspaper The Cape Argus this week quoted girls at the school as saying the dorm matron allegedly threw a student against a wall after first grabbing her by the throat. The youngsters further alleged that the matron swore, screamed at and assaulted other students.

As Access Hollywood reported on Friday's Today show, upon learning of the charges, Winfrey suspended the school's principal with pay and then flew to South Africa with her own team of investigators – who then presented their findings to the South African police. (See Today's video.)

The report also underscored the support Winfrey has from parents in the area, who applauded the quick action she took and the loyalty and concern she has shown the school and its students.

The Academy opened in January to provide quality education to underprivileged girls.

In addition to her bringing investigators into the matter, Winfrey, 53, is also buying cell phones for every student in the school, so that the pupils may call her directly whenever is necessary, said the NBC report.

(CNN) -- A former employee at Oprah Winfrey's school for girls in South Africa has been arrested as part of an abuse probe, police said Friday.

Lungelo Dlamini, police superintendent in Johannesburg, said the suspect -- an ex-school matron whose name was not given -- is accused of physical abuse against girls at the school, including soliciting them for indecent acts.

The suspect will appear Monday at Sebokeng Magistrate Court, a court for family violence, child protection and sexual offenses, Dlamini said.

At this time, no other employees are being investigated, he said.In a statement, Winfrey said, "I'd like to thank the South African Police Services for bringing this investigation

at my Academy to a timely resolution. I am grateful for their compassion and sensitivity to the girls during this difficult

time. It means the world to me. It is my deepest hope that the accused is brought to justice and that this serves as a reminder that any time a child has the courage to step forward, it is our duty as adults to listen and take immediate action."

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls opened in January. Winfrey personally selected the school's 152 pupils, all of them straight-A students from underprivileged backgrounds.

The students get free tuition, uniforms, accommodations and meals at the school in Henley-on-Klip, near Johannesburg.

In a statement issued last month, the academy's CEO, John Samuel, said that an internal inquiry had been launched based on an allegation of misconduct involving a dormitory parent.

According to an article in The Cape Argus, a Cape Town, South Africa, newspaper, the dorm parent allegedly grabbed a pupil by the throat and threw her against a wall, the girl said. Girls at the school also alleged the matron swore and screamed at the girls and assaulted them, the newspaper reported Saturday.

The newspaper said one of the pupils ran away from the school, blaming the alleged abuse. The criminal probe was opened after a team of three American experts hired by Winfrey gave police the

results oftheir initial investigation, police said."We came to the conclusion that there were criminal elements, and then we opened the case for

investigation," Dlamini said this week.Dlamini said that the team of U.S. experts included Robert Farley, a retired Cook County, Illinois, detective. He

said two American social workers were also on the team.On October 17, Winfrey -- who has spoken publicly about the abuse she suffered as a child -- issued a

statement saying, "Nothing is more serious or devastating to me than an allegation of misconduct by an adult against any girl at the academy." Taken from CNN website at http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/11/02/arrest.oprah.school/index.html

Teen fired after calling job ‘boring’

CLACTON, England - A 16-year-old British girl said she was fired from her office job after managers saw that she had branded her position “boring” on Facebook. Kimberley Swann said she was called into her manager’s office at Ivell Marketing & Logistics in Clacton, England, and given a letter stating that she was being fired from her job as an office administrator after she called the job “boring” on her Facebook page, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.

“Following your comments made on Facebook about your job and the company we feel it is better that, as you are not happy and do not enjoy your work we end your employment with Ivell Marketing & Logistics with immediate effect,” the letter read. “I did not even put the company’s name, I just put that my job was boring. They were just being nosy, going through everything. I think it is really sad, it makes them look stupid that they are going to be so petty,” Swann said.

Signs warn of ‘zombies ahead’

AUSTIN, Texas - Hackers got into computer-controlled road signs in Austin, Texas, changing their warning from construction to “zombies ahead.” Many drivers thought the vandalism was a light-hearted prank — like Jane Shin, a University of Texas student, who was with friends when she saw the warning Sunday night. “I thought it was pretty funny,” she told KXAN-TV. “We wondered who did it.” City officials had a different take. Sara Hartley, a spokeswoman for the public works department, said the pranksters had to break into the sign to get at the computer inside, cutting through a padlock, and then hack the computer to change the message. The signs belong to the construction company involved in the project. “Even though this may seem amusing to a lot of people, this is really serious, and it is a crime,” Hartley said. “And you can be indicted for it, and we want to make sure our traffic on the road-ways stays safe.” The zombie warning went away Monday morning after a construction superintendent saw the signs as he drove to work.

Escape attempt stopped by lamp post

HASTINGS , New Zealand - New Zealand authorities said a lamp post and a pair of handcuffs foiled an escape attempt by two prisoners from a courthouse. Security staff at Hastings District Court on New Zealand’s North Island said the two men ran from the courthouse but were stopped when they attempted to run on either side of a lamp post, apparently forgetting they were handcuffed together, Britain’s The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday. “As they were being led from the Hastings police cells… they made a bolt for freedom,” Hastings police sergeant Dave Greig said. “They fell over and they were sprayed with pepperspray. But they got up and ran out of the court onto the street, across the road to a car park,” he said. “That’s where they met the pole — it was all over, rover.” Regan Reti, 20, had been convicted prior to the escape attempt of assault and sentenced to more than two years in jail. He pleaded guilty to charges of escaping from custody and a month was added to his prison sentence. Tiranara White, 21, who was jailed at the courthouse while awaiting trial on charges of stealing a car and violating his parole conditions, did not enter a plea for the escaping charge. He remains in police custody awaiting a psych evaluation, Greig said.
