“A quick note to say thank you very much for the advertising services provided. We placed the ad in late October, had the aircraft under contract by mid-November, and completed the sale mid-December. Your publication also has global reach because our buyer was in Canada but found us via Aviation Trader.”

Important Notes:1. Aviation Trader is printed on a web press that includes an automated on line stapling and trimming process. This enhances the presentation

of the fi nished product. We have authorized our printers to reduce the image size of our pages post transmission by approximately 4% to meet their prescribed minimum trim tolerances and to preserve the integrity of the image space. This will result in advertisements appearing marginally smaller than quoted dimensions in the fi nal print product.

2. The press we use is set up for full colour printing only. No discount is offered by our printer for pages or part pages that do not include colour. Our default advertising rate is therefore full colour. We do however offer a discount to advertisers whose budgets or marketing allocations will exclude the use of full colour in their advertising material. This discount is underwritten by Aviation Trader in good faith and in an effort to ensure that we accommodate needs of all our clients.

All prices are for one insertion only. For pricing involving spot colours please contact our production team.

*Quoted rates remain current at the June 2020 edition.

Ultimate Capability...Tony Shaw

‘Electronic warfare’ is clearly here and now. It’s no longer imaginary or confi ned to the domain of futurists. It’s real, it’s sophisticated and it’s deployed in almost all (if not all) theatres of war currently raging on our increasingly fragile planet.

Whilst we see and experience the effects and consequences of digital technologies in our daily lives, most of us don’t get the opportunity to sit one on one with the industry specialists whose task it is to develop and market them. I was very lucky to be given one such opportunity at the Australian International Airshow (Avalon 2017) when Dana Carroll, the Ratheon Company’s manager of communications and public affairs, space and airborne systems, extended an invitation to sit one on one with three of the company’s senior executives.

Ratheon is a major US military contractor and the world’s largest producer of guided missile systems. Amongst many other responsibilities, the company is contracted to design and deliver weapon systems to Australia’s Joint Strike Fighter variant, the F-35A CTOL (conventional take-off and landing).

As anticipated, the exchange was compelling for many reasons, and I’m not talking just about references made to the ANZUS treaty here, albeit that I left feeling that there should never be any doubt about its signifi cance, value or current integrity. After all we are ‘brothers in arms’ at least at operational level and we’ve fought side by side with our alliance partners in every signifi cant confl ict in recent memory. Whether or not the concept remains unbreakable higher up as a new order settles in to the White House is yet to be seen. Some of the Twitter dialogue of recent times tends to leave us feeling that Australia at least should still be wearing short pants. Enough said!

What else did I learn? Sovereignty and the protections required to preserve what it represents need to be high agenda items. When you distil the objective(s) you begin to understand the signifi cance of the proposition and you understand that it’s not possible to be in any sort of ‘safe house’ without the latest technologies and alliances with partners that dispense them. In this context, I’m profoundly aware of the imperative that is the ANZUS treaty (now 65 years young) and I feel comfortable that Australia remains a pro-active partner in it. After all, to settle for a working relationship that can’t deliver ultimate defence capability would be akin to neglect.

So where does Ratheon fi t in the scheme of things? I’d venture to say at a very senior level. I am reminded of a statement made by former Australian Minister for Defence Kevin Andrews at an address to the US Chamber of Commerce in 2015. ‘Access to the most

advanced technology and equipment from the United States and maintaining inter-operability with the United States is central to maintaining the ADF’s potency’. I fully concur with this statement and I’m certain that nothing has changed since it was made.

Ratheon is by no means the only military contractor working with the Australian Defence Force. Having said this, its involvement is signifi cant. There are interfaces and partnerships that span all military disciplines. The company is clear in articulating its role and points out that the differentiator between it and its key competitors is ‘integration’. ‘The phrase “Integrated in Australia” encapsulates the multifaceted nature of Ratheon’s in-

country capability, highlighting our systems integration and mission support pedigree, our integrated business model, as well as our trusted partnerships with our customer,

suppliers, partners and each other’ it says.

In the theatre that is air defence, many will be familiar with the fact that Ratheon is equipping Australia’s F-35 strike fi ghters with state of the

art weapons and weapon systems. Whilst the fi nal confi guration is yet to be understood it seems likely that the company will supply two missile systems, the AIM-120C Air to Air and the AIM-9X ‘Sidewinder’ short range Air to Air, and the JDAM (joint direct attack munitions) GBU-31 guided bomb.

In this artist’s rendering, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is armed with the AIM-9X Sidewinder missile and the Paveway bomb on both wings, as it prepares to deploy an Air to Air ‘AMRAAM’ missile. Image courtesy The Ratheon Company.

The F-35’s true pedigree is yet to be revealed but it seems the aircraft will exceed the capabilities of the F-18. It’s appearance at the Avalon Airshow earlier this year was a major attraction.

“So where does Ratheon fi t

in the scheme of things?”
