Lions off ensive coordinator Scott Linehan was the Minnesota Vikings’ off ensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2002-04) while Bengals defensive line coach Jay Hayes was the special teams coach (2002).

HOMEWARD BOUND AT 42With a 31-17 win at Cleveland in Week 6, the Detroit Lions head home for back-to-back home games to close out the fi rst half of the 2013 regular season. A er the Browns took a 17-7 lead going into the half, LB Stephen Tulloch said some words at hal ime to inspire the team, especially on the defensive end a er giving up 17 consecutive points in the second quarter.’

S Louis Delmas on the mood of the locker room at hal ime: “I can defi nitely say that it was very emotional and very high. We came out with a chip on our shoulders in the second half and we knew that we didn’t want to let our leader down and that was Stephen Tulloch.”

Head Coach Jim Schwartz, who did not hear Tulloch’s hal ime speech, noted that while leadership from key players is always needed, hal ime speeches do not win football games; second-half adjustments and important plays do.

Schwartz on the reaction to Tulloch’s hal ime speech: “He was fi nished by the time I got in to the locker room. You want leadership from your players. It always is better, I’ve told players and coaches this, when it comes from players on the team, whatever it is. I think that’s a sign of true leadership when players sort or handle things before coaches get involved. He said what he had to say. We moved on. We made our adjustments.”

QB Matthew Staff ord, who only completed 2-of-8 passes against Cleveland’s defense in the second quarter, discussed the diff erence between halves and how the Lions were able to score 24 unanswered points in the fi nal two quarters.

Staff ord on being able to move the football more in the second half: “Reggie (Bush) sprung us with a great big run, picked up some third-down conversions, saw some guys in critical situations, and that’s the diff erence in the game. We did a great job in the second half of playing, putting up 24 points in the second half is pretty good against that defense.”

The Lions sit at 4-2 going into Week 7 having already played half of their road schedule. It has been three weeks since the Ford Field faithful have seen their beloved Lions play, and Schwartz is ready to be home for more than just a one-game stretch.

Schwartz on having two games at home coming up: “We need to get back to that home crowd. Early on the season we spent a lot of time on the road but it will be nice to get two in a row at home.”

WEAPONS TO CHOOSE FROMMuch has been made about the addition of RB Reggie Bush to the Lions’ off ense and his ability to help open up the fi eld for WR Calvin Johnson. However, with the signing of undra ed rookie TE Joseph Fauria, the Lions have added another dimension to their off ense.

Schwartz on the dynamics of the off ense with Fauria in the mix: “A lot’s been made of the dynamic between Reggie and Calvin, but I think there is, in the Red Zone particularly, another dynamic there that can force defenses to be spread thin a little bit.”

Fauria, who had three touchdown catches in Cleveland, has caught seven passes this season, fi ve of them going for touchdowns. All fi ve of Fauria’s touchdowns this year have come with Johnson on the fi eld, four have been on passes of 10 yards or less and three of those have come with Fauria isolated in single coverage in the Red Zone, according to The Detroit Free Press. At some point opposing defenses are going to have to pay more attention to the 6-7 rookie out of UCLA.

Fauria on his breakout role so far in the Lions off ense: “I worked hard to be where I am at right now, the odds were against me, being an undra ed guy. But I overcame and I am going to continue to do so.”

Schwartz on what separates Fauria from others: “Well fi rst of all he is tall as hell…I think the thing that separates Joe and allows him to make those plays is that he is really strong. He has really strong hands.”

Fauria’s three touchdowns set a franchise single-game record for touchdown receptions by a tight end and also tied the rookie franchise record for touchdown receptions in a game. His three touchdowns also set a Lions rookie single-game rookie record for a road game, as he is only the third rookie in team history with 2+ touchdown receptions on the road. With Johnson receiving double-teams almost every snap because of his size and play-making ability, Schwartz said pairing Fauria and Johnson together puts defenses in a tough situation near the goal line.

Schwartz on opposing defenses’ matchups: “If he starts to get more attention, somebody has to get less. Generally, that’s Calvin for us. Not many defenses want to do that.

With an arsenal of weapons on off ense, the Lions have had little trouble exploiting that this year thanks also in large part to Bush’s matchup advantage in the passing game. Bush fi nished with 135 yards from scrimmage, including a 39-yard run in the third quarter and a 18-yard touchdown pass from Staff ord. By registering 135 total yards, it marked the third time in six games this season that Bush has totaled 135+ total yards from scrimmage.

Staff ord on Bush’s performance in Cleveland: “Reggie’s a talented guy out of the backfi eld, catching the football. He did a great job in the second half for us, made some big plays. We got him matched up with No. 53 (Craig Robertson) and he made him miss quite a few times and got open. His big run sprung us, put a lot of air in the balloon too.”

GETTING DEFENSIVEThe Detroit defense once again showed they mean business as they anchored the second-half comeback in Cleveland last Sunday. Trailing 17-7 at the half, the Lions defense stifl ed the Browns off ensive attack and pitched a shutout in the second half to help guide the Lions to the 31-17 victory.

GAME INFORMATIONDETROIT LIONS

Schwartz on the defense shutting down the Browns: “We settled down and made the plays in the second half. We knew we would have to come out and play a very good second half being down two scores at the half and we were going to need stops. A lot of things that we didn’t do well in the fi rst half; we did well in the second half. We rushed the passer a lot better, we defended plays, we didn’t give up big plays, and we forced penalties. I think those were the things that made the diff erence for us in the second half.”

Tulloch’s hal ime speech sparked a fi re under the team a er a lackluster fi rst half. This is Tulloch’s second consecutive season serving as one of the team’s defensive captains, and his leadership resonated with his teammates.

Delmas on what Tulloch said at hal ime: “What he said was very positive and very motivational; he defi nitely got his point across. While he was talking, every individual in this locker room thought that, that one person was talking to them, including myself. I knew that I had to go out there with a chip on my shoulder and not let him down. Not letting him down meant that I had to go out there and do my job.”

Fellow LB DeAndre Levy heard his position mate’s message loud and clear as he continued to make big plays for the Lions defense. Levy hauled in two interceptions against the Browns as he is now tied atop the NFL and leads the NFC with four interceptions on the season. Levy’s fi rst two interceptions occurred in Week 1 (9/8) vs. Minnesota and Week 2 at Arizona (9/15).

Tulloch on what is making Levy so successful this season: “He just studies the game. He studies the game very well. He is good in pass coverage and he makes plays. If you see him on a day-to-day basis, he is in the fi lm room, he is putting in that work and I am glad that he is succeeding the way he is because he puts in that work.”

Through six games, Detroit is tied for fi rst in the NFL with 10 interceptions. Comparatively, the Lions did not register their 10th interception until the team’s 12th game in 2012, and they currently rank tied for fourth with 13 total takeaways (10 INT, 3 Fum). Following Sunday’s win, Levy emphasized the defense’s ability to step up when called upon this season, a characteristic never more evident than in the second half against the Browns.

Levy on how much pressure was on the defense in the second half: “It was on us. Guys were not happy in here. Coaches did a great job of bringing the pictures in and making the corrections on things we weren’t doing well. We were playing fl at, we were playing so . Tully (Stephen Tulloch) called guys out and we responded and that is something we need to continue to do. We need to respond and make the corrections.”

LIONS TEAM CAPTAINSThe 2013 Lions team captains are WR Calvin Johnson and QB Matthew Staff ord on off ense, DT Ndamukong Suh and LB Stephen Tulloch on defense and K David Akers and S John Wendling on special teams.

Captains are determined based on player vote. All six captains will wear a team patch that includes a block “C” on the right shoulder of their game jerseys.

This is Staff ord’s fourth-straight year (2010-13) serving as team captain.

Johnson is serving as a captain for the second-consecutive season.

2013 marks the third time in Tulloch’s career, and the second year in a row with the Lions, that he was named captain. He was also a team captain with the Tennessee Titans in 2010.

For the fi rst time in his career, Suh is a captain on defense.

Wendling, the seventh-year pro, was voted captain for the second-year in a row on special teams.

For the fi rst time in his 16-year career, Akers was voted team captain for the season. While with the Eagles and 49ers, those teams chose captains on a game basis, which he served several times.

This is the eighth-straight year the Lions selected captains for the entire season. Prior to the launch of the NFL’s initiative, team captains in 2006 were recognized with a gold “C” on their practice jersey.

Suh fi nished second (8.0) and Fairley tied for fi h (5.5) in sacks among defensive tackles in the NFL in 2012.

With Suh registering 8.0 sacks and Fairley garnering 5.5 sacks last season, it marks the fi rst time since 1996 that two Lions defensive tackles (DT Luther Elliss, 6.5; DT Henry Thomas, 6.0) had at least 5.5 sacks.

LB DeAndre Levy has shot out of the gate this year to lead the Lions defense as he has registered four interceptions, returning one for a 66-yard touchdown in Week 2 at Arizona (9/15). His fi rst interception was also returned for a touchdown, but was called back due to a penalty on the return. Along with his four interceptions, Levy ranks fi rst on the team with 49 tackles (37 solo), including four for loss.

Levy is currently tied atop the League in interceptions with four, which also rank fi rst in the NFC. He is one of only two linebackers in the NFL with four interceptions, and the only linebacker in the NFC.

With two interceptions against the Browns in Week 6 (10/13), Levy increased his season total to a career-high four interceptions this season and became the fi rst Lions linebacker with four interceptions in a season since LB Jimmy Williams had fi ve interceptions in 1989. Four

interceptions tie for the fi h most in a single-season in franchise history.• Now with nine career interceptions, Levy is tied for

sixth all-time in team history among linebackers. Levy’s 66-yard Int-TD is the second-longest interception

return for a touchdown in team history by a linebacker and longest since Del Ritchhart, playing linebacker on defense, registered a 94-yard interception return touchdown vs. the New York Giants November 15, 1936.

His interception in the third quarter at Arizona that was returned 66 yards for a touchdown was the second interception return for touchdown in his career and fi rst since 2010 (at Miami 12/26/10).

Levy is the fi h linebacker in franchise history to record two career interceptions return touchdowns with the Lions, and he is the fi rst since LB Reggie Brown scored his second interception return touchdown in 1997. He joins LB Mike Lucci (4), Hall of Fame LB Joe Schmidt (2), LB George Jamison (2) and Brown as the only linebackers in team history with two interception return touchdowns.

With interceptions vs. Minnesota and at Arizona, it is the fi rst time in Levy’s career he has picked off passes in back-to-back games. Levy is the fi rst Lions linebacker to record interceptions in back-to-back games since LB Chris Claiborne in 2002 (vs. GB 9/22/02; vs. NO 9/29/02).

The Vikings made them pay as Minnesota RB Adrian Peterson took his fi rst hand-off 78 yards to the end zone to give the Vikings an early 7-0 lead. Detroit would respond with a 10 -play, 60-yard drive as K David Akers booted a 32-yard fi eld goal to cut the lead to 7-3. The Lions would punt twice and cough the ball up with a TE Brandon Pettigrew fumble, but the Vikings were unable to capitalize. Detroit would take advantage of a late Minnesota turnover and RB Joique Bell punched in a two-yard TD run with 10 seconds le in the half. SUMMARY The Detroit Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns in Week 6 of the 2013 NFL season by the score of 31-17. The Lions outscored Cleveland 24-0 in the second half to claim the comeback victory a er trailing 17-7 at hal ime. The Lions lone score of the fi rst half was TE Joseph Fauria’s fi rst touchdown of the game, a one-yard back shoulder fade from QB Matthew Staff ord gave the Lions a 7-0 lead. The Browns would storm back and score 17 unanswered points highlighted by a pair of touchdown passes from QB Brandon Weeden. The second half was a much diff erent story as the Lions defense came out with a chip on their shoulder following a hal ime pep talk from LB Stephen Tulloch. The off ense got the ball moving with a heavy dose of RB Reggie Bush, who recorded his second TD reception of the year to cut the lead to 17-14. The rest of the spotlight belonged to Fauria as the undra ed rookie hauled in two more touchdown passes from Staff ord to clinch the victory and move to 4-2 on the season. Lions LB DeAndre Levy recorded two interceptions in the game to put him atop the NFC with four picks on the season. Levy’s four interceptions is also tied for the lead among linebackers and is tied for the most in the NFL.
