MastheadI have chosen to position the strapline like this because it fits with conventions of a magazine. I have chosen the colour of this strap line because it fits with my models clothing which doesn’t have a big contrast. The extended strapline is to let the reader know what the letters stand for and this is the same colour as the masthead because it shows that it links with the masthead

Puffi have chosen to have the puff in this position because I think it stands out much more having it at the top near the model rather than having it near the bottom because it my get lost amongst the straplines

SplashI have chosen to place my splash here because I feel it links with the main story of the model. I have chosen to have in this font because I feel it was an sophisticated font to use also I feel it went with what the story was about.

These graphs show the results of questions that I have asked students about the magazines for my preliminary task

Page 7: Media AS Level

Preliminary Audience Analysis

In my Research Questionnaire I saw a pattern of both genders liked: sport, music, fashion and Tv&Film. Those 4 categorises had highest amount of votes when doing the questionnaire. My magazine will be aimed at both male and female from the ages 16-18; this is because in the research I found, male an female do have them same interests in these categorise.

Audience profile:My target audience will be students from the ages 16-18 this is because these are the ages because it will be a magazine within the sixth form and these are the ages that the sixth form run from. The interests that these students have according to my research are music fashion Tv&Film and sport. They tend not the read magazines for long, which means my magazine will need to be short and snappy and with everything they like.

Page 8: Media AS Level

The changes I have made to this image, is that I have taken out the background; I have done this because the white background wouldn’t have gone well if I was to place the different colours of my text.

Also I have taken out the background because I wanted to include a shadow this also helps the image to be enhanced and also this was to ensure that the image looked more alive.

Another change that I have made to this image would be that I have cropped some of it out, I have done this because I didn’t need the extra space that was near her arms. I have also zoomed in quite a lot so that I could have a mid shot of her. I have also made her a bit transparent so that my masthead could come through the image which I think was effective.

This is the image I have taken to use for my main image for this magazine cover

This is my final product of a magazine which includes the main image that I took before making it

Page 9: Media AS Level

Preliminary Evaluation

Page 10: Media AS Level

When using photo shop, I found quiet a few things challenging, for example when I was taking out the background for my image certain parts did not select with the magic wand and it was a little bit tricky trying to get certain parts selected however I have now learnt how to use the magic wand effectively and will definitely use it when doing my final project.

My skills have also improved when using the colour tools to change the colours of different texts and also how to get the same colours each time using the eye dropper tool. The mistakes that I kept on making on photo shop would be when I wanted to change something but the layer was not selected so I kept remaking the same thing without thinking to select the layer also another on would be that kept on changing the colour of things incorrectly for example before sing the eye dropper tool I would try and make the same colour but it wouldn’t work.

My image on the front cover of my magazine is very effective because I have my model that is centre of the magazine and it is a mid shot of the model further more it has a mode of address, however something that I would change would be that my model isn’t transparent so that you can see the masthead, because that is not a convention of a magazine.

My masthead I think is effective because I have it full across the top of the magazine I feel it is very attractive to the reader and also think that my sub masthead gives more information about my masthead which you don’t tend to see on a magazine. The use of colour I think is good because I haven't used colours that most magazines use such as red and black I have used gold and maroon this was effective because it went with what my model is wearing.

The use of straplines I think could be improved because it doesn’t conform to a magazine because it isn't all in a straight line going to the right when all magazines have everything in line on the right of the page however I do think the wording of my straplines are good and catchy but also straight to the point.

The layout of my magazine cover could be improved by having even straplines on both sides or having it on one side only because it looks a little bit cluttered when it is not even. I think my magazine conforms to a magazine really well except for some things such as the straplines that aren’t in a straight line.

My research was very useful for when making my magazine because the information that I got from that I then applied it to my magazine. What I would improve in my research is ask a wider range of questions so that I can fully understand what my readers would like to read.

Music Magazine

Audience Research

Page 13: Media AS Level

The Billboard Magazine has a wide range of audiences, it does not just cater for a particular age group because it has different types of socio-economic audiences. Billboard magazine does not only focus on music production but varies what they include in there magazine for example they advertise tour promoters. They cover a wide range of different music genres, this is so they can appeal to the everyone reading there magazine; they don’t just serve the music fans but a industry magazine. Billboard magazine tends to appeal to a younger audience. Even though this magazine is read by a lot of young people it is mainly read by business in the music industry- with the business leaders and power players.

The Rolling Stone has more of a young person perspective, because they are always updated with the new politics of today, music and film and TV. Some key statistics drawn from the Rolling Stone media pack are below:

• 59.3% Male audience• 27.6% of audience aged 18-24• 52.1% of audience under 34 • All ages appealed to• 61.9% went to college – educated audience• 50% single people• 73.9% white audience• $206,000 house cost – affluent• 73.4% employed – some students (less income)

Target Audience Research

Page 14: Media AS Level

Q magazine has a huge audience of young men, who are full time employed and have a high income rate. They don’t have a dependency such as family responsibilities. As the men have has a high income an no family to really care for half of their income is spent on them self's. furthermore because they are such heavy consumers of music, they buy up to 6 albums a month.

Q magazine always has the latest music, and if they haven’t heard that type of music it’s a good way to discover some new music or even new artists. Also when discovering new music they fill the gaps of a back catalogue. So that he can impress his friends, he gains a lot of information on bands reading Q magazine and reveals his knowledge to them.

They are very keen social networkers and uses social networking sites to grow there friendship circle. They like having their friends around now and then just for a few beers or to get ready for a night out. They love live music experiences an often go to gigs, attends different festivals but one in particular in Leeds which he attend yearly. Even though he loves music he also as interests such a TV shows, movies and comedy.

From the research that I have done, I can see that my target audience will range from 21-25+ it has helped me too choose the age that I would like to target and also it helps me know what type of people they are. For example I know that most of the people that I have asked liked festivals, which means my music magazine will need to include something to do with this. I will need to include this because it appeals to the target audience that I have found for my magazine. A lot of the people I have also asked listen to different types of music and music from different eras. This means that my music magazine needs to include all different types of artists because it will need to appeal to people that like all different types of genres and also want to know more about certain artists. My audience also love popular artists, which means my music magazine will always need to be on top and getting interviews with the latest artists or upcoming artists. All of the artists that will be featured in the magazine will be well known by the audience.

The questions that I asked my audience type and the results I collected.

Target Audience Questionnaire

Page 16: Media AS Level

Audience Profile My magazine will be aimed at men and women who are mostly the ABC1- it will be a magazine which is for a range of ethnicities. The gender that the magazine will be aimed at is Male and Female which will range from the age of 21-25+. I have chosen this age range because people who are generally of this age are most likely not to have families to take care of but themselves. Also they are people with a stable job such as Nursing, doctoring, banking jobs and managers.

They will also have a sense of fashion style, and love clothes as well as music. My target audience will also love to go to music events such as festivals, they love this because they are surrounded with a lot of music lovers- also they are surrounded with a whole heap of different musicians. Furthermore my audience love going to festivals because they get to discover new artists that they have not heard before and also artists that they have not heard in a very long time.

The magazine that I have analysed that will similar to mine will be Q, I feel that Q doesn’t focus on 1 aspect of music but focus on different things that may relate to music. Also they have the most similar audience profile as my magazine. My audience will be similar to theirs because, they will be people who don’t have a family dependant on them for income most of their wages are spent on themselves also they will have a heavy.

Front Cover Research

Page 20: Media AS Level

Each of these are well known branded magazines- they both cover parts of their Masthead which represents that the are a well known by the public. The Billboard Masthead is a very clean title with rigid edges with a serif font, this shows that it is plain, on the other hand Rolling Stone magazine has a Sans serif font which suggest that is old fashioned magazine; like an antique, further more this shows that the Rolling Stone magazine is much older than the Billboard magazine with more rock and roll influences.

The mise en Scene in the Rolling stone magazine; the image shows Whitney Houston from shoulder up- this ties in with what the main story is about ‘the diva and her dark side’. The magazine have not used a direct address for the model because they want to link the splash with the image which is her in her dark side which- the image shows her looking above her this could represent her looking back. On the other hand Billboard has a image that has a direct mode of address –this is to catch the readers attention. Further more the clothing that ‘Rihanna’ is wearing targets more the younger generation because that’s the type f fashion there into.

Rolling is quite an old magazine so it will target the older generation through the types of people they talk about- like Whitney Houston. Billboards values show a lot of attitude; this links to their target audience of youngsters because they tend to have a lot of attitude however Rolling stone has more of sophisticated look because it has an older audience to appeal to.

Billboard has more a younger audience- I will be more influenced by them because they appeal to the magazine that I will be creating.

Comparing 2 Different Magazine Covers

Page 21: Media AS Level

The masthead is black on a white background, this is done so that the masthead stands out against the white background. Also the masthead looks broken this connotes with the type of music that there customers listen to. Furthermore the lines going through the masthead is like the strings off a electric guitar that springs off when they start smashing it on stage when they are in live performs.

The colour choices that they have made ties in the with the main story ‘It was violent. We were like pitbulls’ this suggests the violence of the main story; pitbulls are very violent type of dogs and they bite to take off what they have bitten this ties in with the puff the puff looks like someone has splatted it across the white background. The model in the image is wearing a jump suit that is red which suggests prison n breaking laws this also ties in with the red because red connotes aggression. Furthermore the target audience feel they need to be lawless, also they feel like the authority is nothing to them the audience likes the idea of being rebellious and disobedient.

The straplines also attract the audience luring them in with the free give away and world exclusives; the one strapline has a big 5 in red for posters this shows that the target audience like posters because they’re not just getting 1 poster but 5 different types. Also they have the ‘hottest’ band interviews this connotes that they are the magazine that have the best interviews with the best bands and they don’t do interviews with just any bands but only the hottest.

Analysing A Magazine Cover

Page 22: Media AS Level

The red background ties in the house them of Q. This is good because there is a continues theme the magazine

They have a preview of the double page spread, which could just interest the reader to go to look at it even more. This is good because the preview gives the audience and insight of what it is about in more detail

The scattered images show the main stories of what the magazine has to offer. The page numbers shows you exactly where to find the one that interests you most.

This is also following the house theme of Q but also this shows the title of the regular articles that are featured in this magazine. The Q review shows the review the albums that they have featured.

These lines section of the different articles. Also the different page numbers show that there’s a lot to read about. This is also easy for the reader to find the

Contents Page Reasearch

Page 23: Media AS Level

This is to show what magazine it is. Rolling Stone have put there logo on the contents page, which follows the conventions of the contents page.

This is the main image on the contents page. The main image is not of the cover story, however Lily Allen is one of the artist that tie in with the audience that Rolling Stone target.

These are the different things that are issued in the Rolling Stone magazine. Compared to the contents page of Q magazine, Rolling Stone go into much more detail to what they’re stories are about in the magazine.

They have placed this here because it is on the lines of the rule of thirds, which means that is catch’s the readers eyes.

Contents Page Research II

Page 24: Media AS Level

Comparing 2 Different Contents Pages

Both magazines are very popular. Both magazine contents pages have similarities and differences. Both magazines have there logo on the contents page which shows that it is conventional for them to do so. However Q magazine have a big logo that is shown on the top right of the magazine whereas rolling strong have a quite small logo which is on the left hand side. Q magazine makes it very clear that this is the contents page which makes if easier for the audience to identify it on the other hand Rolling Stone don’t have a title page to show that this is their contents [page which is not conventional for a magazine.

Q magazine follows a clear colour theme which is also the same as there logo. This is good because then the audience can know that it is Q magazine because the colour theme is conventional. Rolling Stone has a very plan colour theme, the most colour that is on the page is a huge image of an artist that they feature in the magazine. The contents page of Rolling Stone doesn’t really attract the audience as much as what Q magazine does

In the Rolling Stone we can see that there is just one image on the page which takes up a lot of space, this connotes that the magazine didn’t really have a lot things to feature that would have the interest of their readers. As you can see Q magazine has got range of images, this shows the reader that there magazine is packed with a lot of entertainment to reader about, this is good because the reader will keep wanting to buy the magazine because it is packed with a whole range of different stories.

On the right of both magazines, they have a features list which shows the audience what will be included in that issue of the magazine. They both have separators that separate each story. Q magazine have loads of stories that come down the side with a title a number of where to find it and also a little bit of writing to tell the reader what it is about. Rolling Stone only have a few stories however they go into much more detail of what the story is about and have a number of where to find the stories. Having a lot of detail in the contents page about the stories may give the reader a bigger understanding of what the story is about and would may be would like to go and read more of the story.

Page 25: Media AS Level

The lady is in small case letters which could represent the lady in her. However the ‘GAGA’ is in upper case letters which could juxtapose her lady like side and suggests that she has got a more rough and outgoing side.

The letter ‘L’ represents her. The colour of the letter breaks the dull colours- it is also the conventions of the Q magazine.

The big letters break the large amount of text. Also it separates the different topics in the interview which is easier for the reader.

The image stands out because it hasn’t got a busy background, there isn’t anything to distract you from anything. The image has a direct address.

The image stands out because it is black and white

Contents Page Research

Page 26: Media AS Level

The layout of the text is very spilt up so that it is easier for the audience to read the article

The A stands out amongst the rest of the text because its bigger than the rest of the text

The capital letter in the middles of the whole article stands out and also breaks down the sections of the article

The word good is contrasting with the image because the person in the image doesn’t look very well and also he has beers in his hand. The colour of the ‘Good’ is continued through out the article to show that they are linked. Also there is a supporting image that supports the main image

The bold text could represent the outrage of what he was talking about because it the bold texts are in different places through out the quote

Planning

Page 28: Media AS Level

Vibes masthead is very short and snappy- it is also a bold writing, it is plain and simple- doesn’t have any funky. The colour of the masthead is white but it is against a coloured background which makes it stand out.

NME masthead is very ridged and sharp- it is also a bold writing which is the same as Vibes. The colour of the masthead is unique however could be mistaken for a female majority targeted magazine.

Billboard has a tall standing and neat. The letters of Billboard are touching when the 3letters have the same shape. The colours stand out amongst the white writing.

The RnB magazine has a more graphitic effect. I think this is because of the audience that it is targeted at.

Masthead Research

Out of these different mastheads, I wouldn’t choose any of them because I feel they don’t have any style to them

Page 29: Media AS Level

- I would use this as one of my mastheads because it is simple however eye catching and would stand out on the page.

- Would use this as a masthead because it links in with the masthead. The flowing of the letters represent the notes or lyrics that are being written

- I would use this as one of my titles because its very plain but effective because it is unique and it also matches the flow of the word ‘lyric’

- I would use this as my masthead because it is very sophisticated which is a good look considering my target audience are ABC1

- This would be a good masthead because it stands tall – which could be a representative of it being royal and having elegance

Out of all the different styles I would choose the 2nd one. I feel this is the better option because its simple. However the changes that I would want to do to the letter would be to get rid of the top part of it because I feel that it looks to glamorous for a magazine

The Name Of Artist

The masthead will be placed here because it is conventional of a magazine to have its masthead on the top of the page. The date will be placed underneath the masthead because it is conventional to have one. I have placed it here because I would want the reader to know it an acknowledge it Some of the straplines will be placed here. This is because there can not be a lot of white space on the magazine cover.

The splash will be below the name of the artist because it is important for the reader to them an idea of what the interview is about.

The barcode will be here because it is conventional to be at the bottom of the page and this will be here so that the reader may purchase the magazine

The name of the person in the main image will be placed there because it will be below the main image and this will inform the reader about who is being featured.

The main image will be here because it will be the first thing that the reader will look at, also I would want the image to dominate the page.

I have straplines on both sides so that it is spread out on the page and does not look cramped. Also the reader will be able to clearly see what is some of the featured stories.

I have placed this here because it is conventional to place the logo on the contents page.

I have placed the features list on the side because it will be easy for the reader to find what is featured in the magazine. It will have a caption which will be in bold and at the bottom of that will be a little bit about what the story is about.

The editors note just lets the reader a little more about what is featured in the magazine. Having the editors note gives the reader a better idea of what the editor thought and was trying to portray.

I have put album reviews because in the Q magazine they have something called Q review which is similar.

There are supporting images on the contents page so the contents page looks busy and full of different things to read.

This is too give the reader more insight on the main story. Having the image and cover story near each other, will be much easier for the reader to find and go and read the full article.

Page 33: Media AS Level

Pictures For Magazine I took a range of images for the magazine. I changed the lighting and told the model to put on different outfits so that we could see which one fit the target audience the best. I took the images on a white background so that it will be easier to cut out.
