Stability after the Global CrisisAn Overview of the Oman Economy:

Oman’s economy is witnessing a major transformation in terms of social and economic development, as evidenced by the growing network of large-scale industrial parks,

free zones and maritime gateways being constructed all around the sultanate.

Growth remains positive, and is expected to start at 6% in 2011, as compared to an estimated 5.2% growth in 2010. This is based on an expected rise in oil production, strong government

spending growth, rising export volumes, and an improving investment scene.

In a recent report by Oxford Business Group (OBG), “despite the economic challenges in 2009 due to the global financial crisis, the sultanate remains one of the most economically

and politically stable countries in the Middle East.”

The Government’s Diversification Strategy:

Focusing on the Health SectorThe government is embarking on an economic diversification plan with a focus on infrastructure, health and education. Under this plan, called “Vision 2020,” Oman is moving away from hydrocarbons and building its non-oil sector to reduce dependence on oil revenues and increasing the contribution of the non-oil sectors to the GDP. It aims to provide health care for all citizens through a system designed toencourage disease prevention, public safety, spreading of health services throughout the country, and adoption of a decentralization policy.

The Government’s Eighth Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) includes the:

• Development of the health system basis;• Improvement of the quality of health services;• Reduction of mortality, and accident rates to the lowest international levels;• Focus on mother and child care.

Facts and Figures:

It is forecast that the budget of the Ministry of Health will have to almost double by 2020, which could see the private health sector take on a greater role.

The government has allocated

for the education and health sectors, an increase of US dollars 243 million from the approved allocations of the 2010 budget forming 46% of total current expenditure.

Almost of the government’s budgeted expenditure is on the health sector.

The Seventh Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) allo-cated and spent a huge development budget and launched more than 26 massive projects, which helped to broaden the reach of primary health-care services, including the construction of 20 projects that comprise new health centers and extended health centers around the country as well as new, renovated and upgraded buildings.

Over the last 30 years, the government has invested heavily on the healthsector and succeeded in creating an advanced health system. In the lastfive- year plan, Oman has completed construction of major regional hospitals.

There is a current shift in the health scene: from focusing on the cure of traditional diseases to the prevention and cure of non-communicable “life-style-related” diseases like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and malnutrition. This is the result of the high incidence of these diseases at present, and which has spurred increased government spending on specialist facilities.

Government Initiatives/Developmentsin the Health SceneThe government is bent on its commitment to provide health services and on its efforts to increase the involvement of the private sector، which is now a vibrant industry. Oman today has 1,000 private clinics compared to 471 in 1995.

Attracting Foreign InvestmentHealth Projects in Oman:

The Ministry of Health is currently embarking on important health projects, which is estimated to cost a total of RO73 million or US$189.6 million. Apart from the current projects below being undertaken, there are also several projects related to health centers and other rehabilitation and expansion projects in the pipeline, which amount to RO40 million.

The increasing number of healthcare infrastructure projects is feeding the demand for equally increasing healthcare requirements, and attracting international companies to invest.

Oman and the GCC Healthcare MarketAs the GCC is one of the fastest growing healthcare services in the region and is expected to attract direct foreign investment as the region continues to develop, it will greatly influence the growth of the Oman market as well.

Pharmaceutical sales is expected to grow from US$ 5.6 billion to US$ 10.8 billion in 2020. This growth is driven by high life expectancy and sharp popu-lation growth, increase in healthcare awareness, increasing incidence of lifestyle diseases, conducive

A forecast of annual healthcareexpenditures for GCC countries reaching over US dollars 300 billion is predicted by 2025.

government policies, mandatory medical insurance for employees. This sector is now an attractive destination investment with the rising demand for local products and brands and the need for private sector participation.

Oman’s Health and Wellness Industries:

Responding to Growing HealthRequirementsOman has a growing healthcare sector, mainly triggered by the government’s desire to provide its people with basic healthcare. This, in turn, increases the demand for healthcare products and health-related expenditures. The heavy depen-dence on imports at present also contributes to the rising requirements for locally sourced healthcare products and services.

Another factor that contributes to these require-ments is the added attention that more and more people are giving to their health and well-being, stressing even more the need for healthcare prod-ucts, medical services, and alternative therapy, as well as sports and fitness equipment. There is also a huge demand for medical tourism services throughout the Middle East region, especially relat-ing to wealth loss, total hip and knee replacements, full medical check-up, and cosmetic enhancement.

Health and fitness is one of the key components of the well-ness sector and is one of the growing industries in Oman.

Page 10: MedHealth & Wellness Brochure 2011

The Wellness Industry:

A Growing MarketThe wellness industry in Oman is steadily grow-ing and is expected to continue growing in the same pace in the coming years. Presently, there is a large number of independent wellness companies as well as centers housed within five-star hotels. There is also an influx of foreign wellness compa-nies that have taken their place in the sultanate.

Spa and wellness centers are becoming a competitive multibillion-dollar-generating industry worldwide.

As the spa market has matured people areconstantly looking for ways to include fitnessroutines into their daily schedule; and theirknowledge and expectations of the spa experience have reached a higher level, so does the number ofwellness options increase.
