One night, Dave Bermingham,a founding member of MedfordsM-Town Jazz Band, had a dream.

He dreamt about how he start-ed a jazz festival and how it be-came one of the biggest musicevents in Medford.

On Sept. 13, Berminghams

dream will become a reality.Bermingham is helping to or-

ganize the first-ever PinelandsJazz Festival, to be held at the Dr.

James Still Historic Site and Edu-cation Center.

Bermingham is organizing theevent with Janet Carlson Giardi-na from the Medford HistoricalSociety. Earlier this summer,Bermingham approached Giardi-na with the event.

She immediately loved theidea, Bermingham said. Shehad been planning an event inSeptember, so she already had thedate.

Originally, Giardina wanted tohave a band perform at the housein a much smaller-scale event.After Bermingham got involved,the event evolved into a daylongcelebration of music, completewith two stages, vendors, foodand more.

Bermingham said thePinelands Jazz Festival will beone of the few in the surroundingarea.

Theres a Willingboro jazz fes-tival for quite some time, but thisseems like a nice hole for some-thing like this that Ive beenworking, he said.

The purpose of the festival is toraise money for both the SouthJersey Music Education Partner-ship, a nonprofit organizationawarding scholarships to musi-cally inclined students, and forthe Dr. Still House.

The biggest hurdle in planningthe festival has been money. Sofar, the festival has sponsors com-

mit about $1,000. However, withexpenses totaling approximately$3,000, Bermingham and Giardi-na needed another way to raisemoney.

They began a fundraising cam-paign on the website IndieGoGo.The hope is to cover the remain-ing expenses with fundraising sothe event can send proceeds to therespective nonprofits.

Bermingham originally usedIndieGoGo to do some fundrais-ing for his band.

I had success a few years agowith M-Town Jazz Band, he said.We financed an album throughthat site.

Sheriffs department warnsof ongoing phone scam

There is an ongoing telephone scam ref-erencing the Burlington County Sheriffs

Department. According to Sheriff JeanStanfield, a suspect identifying himself asa member of the sheriffs department hasbeen calling victims and informing themthat they have a warrant issued for theirarrest on failure to report to jury duty. Thesuspect then advises victims to purchaseVanilla Visa or Green Dot cards to pay thefine. Once purchased, the suspect advisesthe victims to go to the county building at49 Rancocas Road, Mt. Holly, threateningthat they will be arrested upon enteringthe building and therefore should verifythe numbers and amounts on the cardprior to entry.

The sheriff s office would never contactresidents in this manner and does not so-

licit bail or fine money for payment overthe phone. drivers who ran red lights, it wentswimmingly, but for the state not somuch.

Last week, word came down that

some drivers who were caught on cam-era running red lights were never in-formed of the fines they faced becauseof a technical glitch in the system. Thestate Judiciary, as a result, asked localcourts to throw out the infractions all17,000 of them.

In New Jersey, red light camera in-fractions result in an $85 fine, but nopoints on a drivers license. At $85 apop, thats $1,445,000 in lost revenue, allbecause of a technical glitch from acompany that supposedly specializesin this.

State lawmakers are angry, andrightfully so.

Said Assemblyman Declan OScan-

lon, of Monmouth County: Thesecompanies incessantly tout the sup-posed accuracy and consistency of their systems when the only thingconsistent about the camera companyrepresentatives is their blatant misrep-resentation of what the equipmentdoes and how accurately it does it.

People make mistakes, but this is abig mistake by American Traffic Solu-tions, which runs half of the states in-tersections with red light cameras.

Lets just switch to the other compa-ny that runs our red light cameras,you might say. Well, the CEO of thatother company, Redflex, was just in-

dicted on federal corruption chargesfor allegedly bribing Chicago officials.Not to mention, a former Redflex exec-utive also accused the company of pay-ing bribes to government officials in 13states, including New Jersey.

Seems to us that these red light cam-

eras, or at least the companies thatwere hired to run them, need to be re-moved, or at least replaced. Theres nosense in paying for a service thats ei-ther ineffective or, worse, possibly ob-tained through illegal means.

We in New Jersey do enough wrongourselves that we dont need an outsidecompany to come in and screw thingsup for us; were plenty good at that our-selves, thank you very much.

The contract for red light camerasexpires in December, and it would bebest if the state didnt renew the agree-ment, not until it studies its full resultsand finds a new company or two to pro-vide the service.

On Aug. 25 at 4:07 p.m., MedfordPolice, Fire and EMS personnelwere dispatched to the intersec-tion of Church Road andEayrestown Road for a motor ve-hicle accident with injuries. Uponarriving, police investigation re-vealed that vehicle No. 1 was trav-eling eastbound on Church Roadat Eayrestown Road and failed to

stop at a red traffic signal and

struck vehicle's No. 2 and 3, whichwere traveling north and southbound through the in-tersection.

He said the festival fundraisinghas gone well so far. The festivalhopes to raise $2,000 on In-dieGoGo before Sept. 13.

Were almost there, last countwere at $1,340, Berminghamsaid. But Im pretty confidentwell get to our goal.

The festival will feature a mixof professional and student musi-cians. There will be a main stagewhere the main acts will performat the top of every hour.

The event will also feature stu-dent performances in betweenthe professional bands.

Bermingham hopes the festivalwill connect some of the studentswith the bands and musicians.

We have this side stage calledthe woodshed that will featureyoung musicians in the area, hesaid. Theyre going to play dur-ing the intermission, so there willbe non-stop music playing from 10

a.m. to 5 p.m. Were hoping thatmaybe even some of the profes-sional musicians will come andplay with the students.

Outside of the music and ven-dors, the festival will also featurearts and crafts as well as a dogrun. Members of the historicalsociety will be giving tours of the

education center and historicsite.

YMCA Camp Ockanickon inMedford will host its eighth annu-al Wine, Beer and Whiskey tast-ing event on Friday, Oct. 24 from 7to 11 p.m. at the Mansion inVoorhees.

Guests will enjoy featuredwines, beer and whiskey with abuffet dinner and live music by

Patrick Oberstaedt and his jazzscholars accompanied by No Com-mitment and Friends. Theevening will include both live andsilent auction items. Limited ta-bles of 10 persons will be availablefor $57.50 per person. The camp isoffering all military personnel a25 percent discount. Proceeds

from this event will help youngpeople achieve their potentialwhile strengthening their charac-ter. Tickets are $65 until Sept. 19and after Sept. 19 tickets are $75.

ed to do since I was a little girl,Turck said.

Turck, 18, earned the chance tosing after winning a contest heldby Thunder 106, a country musicradio station based in Eatontown.After hearing about the contestand receiving encouragement

from her family and friends, shedecided to submit an auditionvideo.

I love to sing and I alwayswanted to be on a stage that big,she said. I love Keith Urban.

Thunder 106 held the contest tofind someone to perform WeWere Us with Urban. In hisalbum Fuse, Urban performsthe song with country singer Mi-randa Lambert. However, withLambert unable to be at the Aug.15 concert, Thunder 106 lookedfor an area singer to fill the void.

Days after submitting hervideo, Turck learned she was thesinger chosen.

It was so surreal, Turck saidupon learning she had won.

Turck has been a singer formost of her childhood. She per-formed in the chorus in elemen-tary school and in ensemble inmiddle school. She has spentsome time singing at local eventssuch as the Harvest Festival inMarlton. In addition, Turckwrites her own songs during herfree time.

I absolutely love it, she said.I love the people and I love themusic. I'm a huge supporter of people who pursue their pas-sion.

Even though she always haddreams of performing in front of a large crowd, taking the stage atthe PNC Arts Center was beyondanything Turck could imagine.

When I was waiting off thestage, I was thinking 'Oh mygoodness, there's about 30,000 peo-ple out there,' Turck said.

After talking for a minute withUrban and saying hi to her familyin the crowd, the song began, and

all the nerves Turck felt disap-peared.

When I stepped on the stage,all my fears went away, she said.I thought to myself, 'This is al-ways where I wanted to be.'

At the end of the night, Turckreceived a surprise from Urban.He left her a guitar with a specialmessage.

It was a gift to say thank you,Turck said. He said 'Hannah,thank you for filling in for us.' Hesigned his name. It was really anawesome surprise.

A 2014 graduate of ShawneeHigh School, Turck began attend-ing Mount St. Mary's College justdays after the concert. WhileTurck plans to focus on academ-ics and earning her degree, she isnot giving up on her dream of having a career in music.

I want to be able to have thebest of both worlds, she said.
