The township is exploring theoption of applying for a Burling-ton County Municipal Park Devel-opment Grant.

The township was able to quali-fy for the full $250,000 offered bythe county in 2012, which was ap-plied to repairing and reopeningthe skate park at Freedom Park.

The grant is a reimbursementgrant, in which the townshipwould have to spend the money be-fore it got a check from the county.

We need to prioritize and seewhich way to go, Deputy MayorChris Buoni said.

Council agreed it would submitthe application, which is ap-proaching the deadline. It was un-

clear how the money would beused.

Township manager ChrisSchultz advised that the townshipwould have a better chance of ac-quiring the full $250,000 if therewas a county push, includingcleaning up parks and trails thatcould be used by residents in thecounty and not exclusively Med-

ford residents. The idea of the application was

met with some opposition fromcouncilmember James RandyPace, who wasnt shy about his is-sues with receiving the money lastyear for the skate park.

He questioned whether thetownship could apply the grant toopen space debt. Pace wanted along-, mid- and short-term plan forthe funding and how the moneywould be applied.

I can understand and appreci-ate getting our tax dollars back,Pace said. If we can get a list ofauthorized use for that grantmoney. As much as I would like toget those tax dollars back, there

isnt anything to get back. Whatwe have available is spent through2029.

Pace went on to note he wouldlove to see the trails updated, thedog park expanded in addition toother updates in the township.

I want to apply for the grant, but I want to use it correctly, Pacesaid.

Additionally, the council wasuneasy about constructing anynew facilities when there areparks that could use clean up and

updating, members of the councilsaid. Medford Township stafferBeth Portocalis said the townshipcould benefit from the use of fair-grounds, as she has been receivingnumerous requests from largecompanies to host picnics andother events in Medfords parks.

Requests have come in aboutusing Freedom Park for eventsand such, since its cheaper to hosta picnic or team-building activi-ties than rent out a banquet hall,Portocalis said.

A resolution will be prepared tomove forward for application andfurther discussion.

In other news: Council dis-cussed the possibility of a town-ship-wide smoking prohibition.Schultz and Portocalis will be cre-ating an ordinance for the councilto discuss at the next meeting, which will be held June 4 at theUnion Fire House, 1 FirehouseLane, at 7:30 p.m. due to primaries.

Fewer than 10 harassment, in-timidation and bullying inci-dents were recorded last yearfrom July 1 through Dec. 31 atthe Medford Township SchoolDistrict.

According to Gale Ferraro, the districts anti-bullying coor-dinator, a majority of the inci-

    dents were name-calling and ha-rassment.

At the Board of Educationsmeeting last week, Ferraro said

the district has been reducingthe number of investigationsand violations.

At the elementary level, therewere four investigations and oneviolation, and at the middleschool level, there were five in-vestigations and three viola-tions.

She noted the district has in-creased the number of programsto raise awareness about pre-

venting bullying, harassmentand intimidation on an ongoingbasis.

    Theres always room for im-

provement, Ferraro said, adding parents are the biggestreporters of incidents in the dis-trict.

The incidents are very minorthings, but we take it very seri-ously. We want our kids to feelsafe.

Mayor supportsincumbent council membersIt has been approximately 17 months

since Jeff Beenstock, James Randy Pace, and Chuck Watson took office on MedfordTownship Council.

All three men ran for office on a reformplatform to change the way our townshipdid business and to remove the outside po-litical influences that had caused ourbeloved community so much financial in-stability and turmoil.

    Having worked side-by-side with all

three men for the past 17 months, I canstate, unequivocally, that Jeff Beenstock,James Randy Pace and Chuck Watsonare men of integrity and honor.

I am privileged to have such intelligent, hardworking and honest individuals as my

    colleagues on council.

Each of them has unselfishly, and withvision, made important decisions to im-prove our community.

I look forward to working with thesemen as we continue to steer Medford on apath to financial stability.

This year, as the Primary Election ap-proaches, toxic political mailers are arriv-ing at my house, reminding me of the wayour town used to be run only a few shortyears ago.

There is no place for these types of per-sonal attacks in a local election. Nor isthere any reason for our community to re-

turn to the days when local candidatesspend $100,000 on an election.

The enormity of such campaign expen-ditures by one candidate can mean onlyone thing: the outside influences that did somuch damage to Medford just a few short

years ago are trying to return and regain a

political foothold in our community. Pleasedont allow our hometown to fall back intothe hands of those who are only motivatedby power, greed and ambition.

Please come out and vote in the Primaryon June 4 and join me in voting for JeffBeenstock, James Randy Pace andChuck Watson.

Council members discussJune 4 Primary Elections

In 2012, Medford turned a new leaf with

a new township council that was independ-ent of New Jerseys big-party politics.

The June 4 Primary brings with it im-portant reasons for you to re-elect Been-

    please see LETTERS, page 7

Every four years, there is a big,

big election in New Jersey that

costs candidates lots and lots of

    money. Gubernatorial candidates ad-

vertise hard and heavy throughout the

state, spending boatloads of cash in the

New York City and Philadelphia metro

markets. This years election for Garden State

governor is extra special because the

    incumbent, Chris Christie, is thought

to be a leading candidate for the Re-

    public nomination for president in

    2016.

Before that is a possibility, though,

he will have to beat his Democratic op-

ponent in New Jersey this November. And, even before that, hell have to

    defeat his Republican opposition for

    the gubernatorial nomination, Seth

    Grossman, an Atlantic County lawyer

    and political veteran.

While the focus of this election has

already been on Christie and top Dem-ocratic candidate Barbara Buono, both

must make it through next Tuesdays

Primary Election before they can com-

pletely turn their focus to Novembers

    General Election.

Buono, a state senator from Newark

who has been representing the 18th

    Legislative District since 2002, will

square off against Troy Webster, an

aide to the mayor of East Orange.

If Buono and Christie succeed next

week, as many expect, theyll officially

turn their focus on each other, letting

    the money, and muckraking, fly.

Both parties have already begun tel-

evision ad campaigns, and the number

of ads and ferocity of the content will

surely pick up as Novembers election

    approaches.

Its an unfortunate reality of cur-

    rent-day electioneering, especially in

this state. So expect your TV sets, your radios

and your newspapers to be filled with

    political advertisements over the next

six months until an official governor is

    named.

In the meantime, get out and vote in

    the Primary Election next Tuesday,

June 4, if youre a registered Republi-

can or Democrat. In addition to the gubernatorial elec-

tion, there are also elections for the

    General Assembly, state Senate and

local governing bodies. This is your

first chance to let your voice be heard.

Campaign season has begunWith Primary Elections next week, let the advertising begin

    Your thoughts

Do you plan to vote in next TuesdaysPrimary Election? If so, why? If not, why? Send us your thoughts in a letterto the editor.

stock, Pace and Watson for Med-ford Township Council.

One of the critical elements ofthe success of our first two yearshas been the balance and dedica-tion of this council.

It is truly unique to have fivepeople serving together who arewilling to listen to each other andto the public, with the sole inten-tion of finding the best solutionsto problems facing our town.

This year, we are asking for

you to help keep Medford movingin a positive direction. We have agood thing going and now is notthe time to turn back to politicsas usual.

In less than two years, we havetransformed our municipalityinto a highly efficient, accessibleand transparent local govern-ment.

    We have replaced government

expenditures with opportunitiesfor volunteerism and communityservice and have left no stone un-turned in our quest for leaner, friendlier government. We have

accomplished a lot in our firsttwo years, but our work is not yetcomplete.

Please vote in the June 4 Pri-mary.

    letterS to the editor

So, I made a point of seekingout Randy Pace to hear his ideasand his message first hand. Coun-cilman Paces message was gen-uine and authentic, and I devotedmy time to the worthy MedfordFirst cause.

It was a very rewarding experi-ence, and I was able to see theircommon sense, grassroots cam-paign topple the political ma-chine that had a hold on our townfor so many years.

In August of that year, I left forcollege in Washington, D.C. WhenI returned to Medford a fewweeks ago after my second year atschool, I was taken aback by the

plethora of negative politicalmailers that I have received.

These mailers seem to belittlethe difficult decisions our currentcouncil faced in its first 18months in office.

The upcoming Primary Elec-tion presents the people of Med-ford with a clear choice: To con-tinue with the Medford First mes-sage of transparent and fiscallyresponsible governance.
