GREETINGS

Medicine Hat MP LaVar PayneIt is with great excitement that I write to wish Medalta all the best as it rolls out its programming for the 2013 year. Medalta has been an integral part of the Southeastern Alberta economy for some years now, and I am very proud to tell people I represent the riding that Medalta is found in. Medicine Hat is well known for its historic clay district, and I am always very happy to show off some of the fine pottery products that are produced here, whether I’m

in Ottawa or here in Alberta.

I highly encourage all people to sign up for some of the programs offered. It can be good for young couples, retired folks, young adults and children. It’s also a good spot to engage in family activities.

As part of the local tourism economy, it is very encouraging to see how successful Medalta really is. A place that sees artists come from all over the world, I look forward to the continuing success of your programming, and wish you all the best in 2013. Thank you.

Medicine Hat MLA Blake PedersenIt is my great pleasure as your local MLA to celebrate and support the great centre of heritage and culture that has been created at Medalta Potteries and the Historic Clay District. While I have personally owned and collected Medalta Stoneware and Pottery for many years, I have received a new appreciation through my role

as Official Opposition Critic for Culture. Medalta is held in high regard throughout the province, a point that is emphasized by its inclusion by Travel Alberta as one of the Top 15 tourist attractions to visit, and it is a source of pride for everyone involved.

I would like to commend all of the staff and volunteers for their hard work in making Medalta a key feature of our community.

Cypress - Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes

Located in the Medicine Hat Clay Industries National Historic Site, Medalta is an important part of Medicine Hat’s vibrant cultural community, both past and present.

The Historic Clay District (where Medalta is situated) was once home to some of Canada’s most important clay factories.

Today, Medalta offers many different opportunities for people to get involved in the Arts and experience an important part of Alberta’s history – by visiting the Museum, taking a class or participating in a workshop, becoming a member, or volunteering.

Medalta also brings worldwide attention to Medicine Hat. The Medalta International Artists in Residence Program attracts emerging and established artists from all around the world, who travel to this scenic site to be inspired and work creatively with other artists.

In 2013, Medalta is containing its proud history, and offering many exciting programs, workshops, art exhibitions, and educational opportunities for both youth and adults.

I encourage you to get involved and enjoy your Medalta experience!

Mayor Norm BoucherMedicine Hat is privileged to be home to Medalta Potteries, within the iconic 150 acre Historic Clay District.

Today the Historic Clay District is famous due not only to its designation as a national heritage site but as a working studio for artists in residence who come from all over the world creating their own one of a kind designs for show and sale.

I encourage residents and visitors to explore all the unique areas of the site, partake in the workshops and exhibitions listed in this Guide or become a volunteer. And on behalf of the community of Medicine Hat thank you to Friends of Medalta for their passion and tireless devotion to this historical site. I am looking forward to the wonderful restoration efforts we’ll see unfolding in the future.

The Reception Gallery has become a hugely popular venue for hosting events of all sizes, including Medalta’s own Black and White Gala. The support for October‘s annual fundraising event was enormous and I congratulate the staff and volunteers of Medalta for an excellent evening of fun and entertainment. I also offer my heartfelt thanks to local businesses and organizations for monetary and retail donations for the evening’s silent auction which raised significant funds for Medalta’s Artistic, Community and Education programs.

I hope that you will be able to make a visit to the Historic Medalta Clay District sometime soon, and enjoy a world full of exciting events and venues.

Greeting from Dave Sherwood,Friends of Medalta Society Chair

2012 has been a very exciting year for everyone involved with the Historic Clay District and it’s great to have you all as a part of it. With the bulk of Medalta’s restoration complete, we have been able to direct most of our energy this year towards our artistic, community and education programming. The results have been fantastic.

When Medalta began operations in 1912 as the Medicine Hat Pottery Company, the people working in the factory couldn’t have

imagined that a century later it would be a place where thousands of visitors (from three year old students to art school grads to academics to tourists) would flock to.

I am proud to be a part of an organization which has become a model for cultural, community and artistic development in Western Canada. Through many years of hard work, volunteers and staff have been able to preserve this remarkable facility. Their ambitious vision – which people once thought was a bit crazy – has now been realized. Medalta, as a centrepiece of the Historic Clay District, is now a cultural icon in Alberta.

Everyone who is (or who has been) involved in Medalta’s growth over the years should be as proud as I am. This Program Guide showcases a wonderful variety of programs designed to expose more and more people to their heritage, culture and inherent creative ability. If you haven’t experienced Medalta lately, I want to personally encourage you to visit.

Thank you.Dave Sherwood

A message from Barry Finkelman, Executive Director

When I started as the Executive Director of the Historic Clay District in 2005, Medalta was a much different place than it is today. Many of the buildings were still in disrepair. Everyone involved was very much selling a vision of the future where Medalta was a heritage and artistic hub in Alberta.

These bright, passionate, dedicated people – nearly all of whom were long-time volunteers – were able to string together enough support and grants to keep that dream of what Medalta could be slowly moving forward.

That was then.

This year, we held our Second Annual Rotary Black & White Gala in our brand new Reception Gallery and Yuill Family Gallery, both of which were officially opened in November 2011. If we try to measure how much the community has gotten behind Medalta and the Historic Clay District, this is a great place to start. The event sold out one month early and many sponsors and donors from within the community came forward.

For the second straight year, there was tangible excitement in the air – excitement from our long-time supporters who were so proud of the achievements they helped bring about – and excitement from people new to Medalta, who were struck with what Medalta had become.

In 2012, the Rotary Black & White Gala raised $63,000 for our Education, Artistic and Community programming. Over 60 people volunteered for the event and another 60 donated items to our auctions. But those are just numbers. The real story here is the support which came pouring forward from this great community. It was overwhelming! We are honoured to have the opportunity to work for all of you and we are grateful for your support.

Thank you.Barry Finkelman

RESIDENT ARTISTS’ HOLIDAY EXHIBITION

Since arriving in early September, Medalta’s resident artists have been hard at work creating new work, teaching courses and generally becoming a big part of our community. This is your first chance to see the work they have created in their short time here – a teaser for their solo exhibitions, which will begin in summer 2013. Everyone is encouraged to attend the Opening Reception on Friday, November 23 and meet these new artists who are from across Canada (and even reaching into the United States).

The Medalta International Artists in Residence Program is designed to serve artists at all stages of their careers. Students, emerging, and established artists are able to work together in our open, spacious, semi-private studios for a time between one month and one year.

The purpose of this residency is to allow an artist the extended period of time to develop their work, all while becoming part of the Medicine Hat community. Throughout the year, this core group of artists further their explorations while becoming big parts of Medicine Hat’s cultural community.

Throughout the year, we host artists’ talks, studio open houses and other events to encourage our visiting artists to connect with the community. If you’re interested in attending one of these free events, upcoming dates are listed in the calendar in this program guide as well as online.

There are few places in Southern Alberta which can match the character of Medalta’s Reception Gallery. This space, set among the historic Medalta Potteries National Historic Site is a fantastic example of historic, century-old industrial architecture brushed with elegant, modern touches.

The 50’ by 150’ space is ideal for weddings, conferences, trade shows, Christmas Parties, performances and just about anything you can imagine. Medalta has transformed from a busy pottery factory to an industrial museum which preserves and tells stories of its past. Its impact goes far beyond being a simple regional museum – it is National in scope. We hope you are able to visit us this year.

Turning Room GallerySee how Medalta reached across Canada from Medicine Hat through entertaining stories and interesting facts. View vibrant, creative displays, enter the re-creation of a portion of a tunnel kiln or go subterranean and see what lies under the floor.

Yuill Family GalleryChanging exhibits of contemporary art and Medicine Hat clay products means there’s always something fascinating to see in Medicine Hat’s most unique art gallery. View an exposed century-old beehive kiln foundation unearthed during a recent archaeological dig.

Reception Gallery & Kiln RoomSpend some time learning about dynamite in the blast shack, peer through the windows to see a very busy 1920’s pottery factory in action and stand by as workers load train cars destined for locations across Canada. The Reception Gallery uses multimedia displays to tell stories of those who once worked here.

Collector’s Gallery (Featuring the A.T. Schlachter Collection)

Here, the largest known collection of Medicine Hat pottery is on display. Enter one of Medalta’s beehive kilns – one of Medicine Hat’s iconic images – and get a first-hand look inside one of these fascinating structures.

Working PotteryVisit the Working Pottery – where traditional Medalta ware is made for sale in our gift shop. Meet and speak with the people who create the pieces and add an extra level to the terms ‘hand-made’ and ‘locally made.’

Old FactorySee Medalta as it was the day it closed. Left un-touched for decades, these buildings still have most of their original machinery. See the original wooden wheels and drive train turn, bringing the factory back to life. Don’t worry – it’s much cleaner and quieter these days.

The Art of James Marshall is a beautiful coffee table book featuring Marshall’s life, told through his vast and varied body of work (including his pencil drawings, large-scale murals, ceramic art and photography). This book was put together over the past couple years by a great group of people who volunteered many hours of their time. Bill & Elizabeth Yuill paid for the production cost and Hideaway Studios donated their design time.

In the end, 2,000 beautiful hardcover books were printed and donated to us for sale. Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, 100% of the proceeds of the sale of the book will go towards the restoration of the Soft Mud Interpretive Centre at the Medicine Hat Brick & Tile plant.

The books retail for $39.95 (+gst) and can be found in Medalta’s gift shop, the Tourism Medicine Hat Visitors’ Centre and Kitchen Ka-

Boodle (which is one of the best places in Medicine Hat to find anything for your home).

With Christmas right around the corner, this would make a great Christmas gift. It is a wonderful look at the life and artwork of one of Alberta’s most prolific artists. His work can be seen across Canada, Europe and the United States.

One of our most interesting and requested family activities is the Medalta Clay Table. Once you register (minimum one day in advance), you and your child will receive a short orientation session and have the opportunity to create a mantle-worthy masterpiece.

Once finished, you will have access to Medalta’s museum where you will be able to compare your work to the workers who came before you.

Over the course of ten weeks, you and your little artist will explore ceramic art, painting, music, drawing and more … all in a fun, encouraging atmosphere at Medalta.

A newspaper’s front page has long been a ubiquitous part of many peoples’ lives. It is often the first point of reference when big news breaks anywhere in the world. The headlines call to us and even though the images are often iconic, few can name the source they originally came from.

How can it be that one of the most important communication tools of our time can be taken for granted?

In In Print, Medalta and the Medicine Hat News have partnered to exhibit important front pages over the past one hundred years. The thought is that by elevating the Front Page from its regular place on your dining room table to the walls of a gallery, it will encourage the viewer to re-visit the idea of how information is transmitted.

From the dawn of mankind, clay has recorded our creativity. The earliest humans skillfully formed beautiful items from clay to satisfy their artistic souls. Come explore and learn both the ancient and modern clay skills of hand building and wheel throwing.

Beginners and those with some clay experience can gain confidence by creating artistic and functional pottery pieces that are glazed and fired. Clay may be purchased at the first class for a small additional fee.

Enjoy the thrill of bringing clay to life with your own hands! Instructors for these courses are visiting artists who are participating in the Medalta International Artist in Residence Program.

Sometimes it feels like Medalta runs on volunteers. Thanks to the incredible support of so many who donate their time, Medalta is able to offer so much more than it would be able to otherwise.

Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 22 – 26 and we want to take that opportunity to thank all our volunteers for their hard work over the past year. On Saturday, April 27, we will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation event which will take place in conjunction with an art exhibition. For all our volunteers, it’s a great way to experience Medalta from a perspective they’re not necessarily used to – as our guests!

If you have volunteered for us in the past year, we encourage you to attend this afternoon event.

Since its inception in the late 1990’s, there has been a great group of volunteers working by committee to help make the program a success. Many of the volunteers involved are ceramic artists or artisans themselves and we want to celebrate all the work they do by hosting an exhibition of their work during Volunteer Appreciation Week.

That partnership continues in 2013 as Elm Street School’s young artists will again be exhibiting their work in Medalta’s Yuill Family Gallery.
