Show Daily

Yesterday we were honoured

to have H.E. Eng Hussain

Nasser Lootah, Director

General of Dubai Municipality, once

again, to open this year’s Middle

East Coatings Show, which, as in

previous years provided excellent

business opportunities to visitors

and exhibitors alike. The number

of visitors who attended yesterday

reached more than 3100 from

58 countries.

Here’s to another successful

day in Dubai. Following are quotes

from participating companies who

have taken time to provide their

thoughts and expectations for this

year’s event.

Gert Van Herwegen from De Vree,

a company, which has taken part in all

the MECS events since its inception,

provided his thoughts on this year’s

event. “I have a vivid memory of a

conversation that I had with a potential

customer at the Middle East Coatings

Shows some 15 years ago.

“I will not drop any names here

but the gentleman in front of me was

urging me to give him a good price

because ‘his company was small

now but, one day, he would be as big

as ICI’.

“Well, that didn’t quite work out

the way he predicted but today his

company is an important player in

the paint and coatings industry and

De Vree has had a longstanding

relationship with him. I guess I must

have given him the good price that he

was asking for and some very good

quality equipment as well!

“The Dubai Show is a great

opportunity to reach out to our

existing customers but also to

discover hidden gems like these.

Companies that may just have seen

the light of day, with ambitions

that may seem absurd at fi rst but

determined to become one of the

industry’s major players.

“Thanks to DMG and its wonderful

staff for making these kinds of

meeting possible.”

Pedro Javier Pascual, Commercial

Manager, Oliver y Batlle S.A.U

commented by saying “MECS for our

company means ‘ahlan wa sahlan’:

a great opportunity to welcome again

our friends”.

Daniel Troxler stated: “Bühler AG

has increased its installed base of

bead mills and three roll mills by more

than 30 machines in the Middle East

success is a combination of personal

visits and platforms, such as the

Middle East Coating Show in Dubai.

The show provides a great possibility

to create new leads and supports our

sales activities in a perfect way. We

are looking forward to the event!”

Mohammed Shabbir Hussain,

Marketing Manager, Tinting Systems

Company had this to say about the

show: “MECS is simply the best and

highly valued show for the paints and

coatings industry. And we at Tinting

Systems Company always feel proud

to be here at MECS and we are

looking forward to meeting with key

decision makers from manufacturers

of paints and coatings”.

Dr Meinhart Roth, Hoffmann

Mineral GmbH said: “As in the years

chance to show its international

presence at the Middle East

Coatings Show but newly together

with our strong partner Rishichem

Mideast. In contrast to the past

years it was decided to join forces,

offering the ideal combination of

technical expertise and local market

knowledge, for our customers and

prospective customers in this region,

who are seeking intelligent solutions

and innovative products.

“Hoffmann Mineral, with more

than a hundred years of experience

in the fi eld of functional fi llers, offers

tailor made materials for a versatile

range of applications and paves the

way from the conventional cheap

mineral fi ller towards the smart high

tech product.

“Attributed to the continuously

changing markets and the increasing

expectations of the industrial

processors it is not enough to offer

well known standard materials – which

makes Hoffmann Mineral stand out

from the crowd. Besides our unique

mineral – the ‘Neuburg Siliceous

Earth’, we support our customers

with our broad expertise not only in

the fi eld of paints and coatings but

also in reactive resins, adhesives and

sealants, which exceeds the status of

a supplier to a reliable partner of novel

developments.

“To underline this position we

found in Rishichem Mideast the

ideal distributor to reinforce our

global network and to support our

customers in the Middle East market.

“We hope to meet you at our booth

K10 to discuss your concerns and

to introduce you to our symbiosis of

innovative solutions and local support

for your specifi c application.”

Indutint 100 from TSCTinting Systems Company (TSC),

is a one-stop tinting solutions provider

for the paint, coating and composite

industry. Based in Saudi Arabia, TSC

has been serving customers in the

MENA, Asia Pacifi c and European

regions for more than a decade.

Within a short span of its inception,

TSC has established a benchmark in

the industry through its wide variety of

point-of-sale colourants and in-plant

pigment pastes for architectural,

industrial and speciality applications.

Indutint 100

Indutint 100 pigment preparations are

aldehyde-based pigment pastes for

industrial paints and heavy Industrial

maintenance coatings. They are

aromatic free and feature low VOC

and they can be used in point-of-sale

and in-plant tinting.

These colourants offer excellent

resistance to heat, chemicals, abrasion

and humidity. They have high opacity,

due to which the paints have increased

concealing power that makes a

single coat of the paint suffi cient to

give bright and vibrant colour. They

are non-aromatic, high performance

colourants that offer wide compatibility

across industrial technologies. This

makes them a versatile and ideal

choice as coating producers.

The colour and colour strength

can be controlled both volumetrically,

as well as gravimetrically. This gives

precise and consistent reproducibility

of the base paint combinations.

Moreover, they have excellent storage

capacity and is resistant to frost and

other harsh weather conditions

Introducing the PosiTector SST from DeFelskoDeFelsko is pleased to announce

the new PosiTector SST Soluble Salt

Tester and Bresle Method patches

for measuring the concentration of

soluble salts on metal surfaces. The

PosiTector SST is the fi rst conductivity

probe designed specifi cally for the

Bresle Method and is compatible with

any Bresle Method patch, including

the innovative new PosiPatch and the

economical DeFelsko Adhesive Patch.

Features include an intuitive step-by-

step interface that guides users through

the Bresle Method, an onscreen timer

to report test duration and automatic

computation of surface density of salt

(mg/m2 or μg/cm2) with adjustable test

volume. The American-made PosiTector

SST is also ideal for the determination

of water-soluble contaminants in non-

metallic blast media.

The innovative, reusable PosiPatch

uses a magnetic ring for attaching to

steel surfaces and leaves no adhesive

residue to clean. Sharp needles are

replaced by safe, fl exible dispensing

tips and air is automatically removed

through a watertight, air permeable

membrane, therefore, saving time.

The proprietary DeFelsko Adhesive

patch provides the same performance

as Latex Bresle patches, at a fraction

of the price.

Minimised cleaning effort in powder coating production linesDue to decreasing stock and more

order-based production, the batch sizes

in powder coating production are getting

smaller. The downtime, during cleaning

intervals of the system, becomes an

increasingly important factor not least with

regard to operational costs.

How to simplify cleaning? The main parts,

such as the ACM classifi er mill, cyclone

classifi er and cyclone are already designed

for easy cleaning. Manual or automatic

opening devices can be used for access to

all internal parts and the connected fl anges

and piping can be equipped with ‘fast-action’

connections. With a compact installation,

product-contacted piping can be reduced

to a minimum. Despite all these measures,

some neuralgic points, such as the fi nes

discharge or classifying wheel, require special

cleaning efforts due to often hard deposits.

Special surface treatment is a possible

solution to make these points easy to clean.

From the large number of possible coatings /

treatments, the right material that is suitable

for powder coating products must be found.

Not only the product deposit behaviour but

also the mechanical properties (abrasion

resistance), material properties (conductivity)

and, of course, the investment costs (cost-

effective application of the coatings) are

essential factors to enable selection of the

right coating. Hosokawa Alpine invested in

intensive development work to select suitable

coatings and conducted long-term trials with

several coatings.

The results are very promising. At

the neuralgic points with previously hard

deposits, only dust layers, which can

be cleaned easily with, eg compressed

air, remained with the new innovative

surface treatment.

Lumifl on from AGC: The perfect combination of quality and value Lumifl on is one of many quality

products made by AGC, the Asahi

Glass Co, which was established in

Japan in 1907. In 110 years, AGC

has gone from a small glass

company to a diversifi ed, multi-

billion-dollar enterprise.

AGC fi rst developed its solvent-

soluble Lumifl on fl uoropolymer 35

years ago and very soon manufacturers

discovered that this resin was different.

Lumifl on resins allow fl uoropolymer

coatings to be cured at room

temperature. For the fi rst time, the

durability, weatherability and long-term

cost effectiveness of fl uoropolymer

coatings were now available for

fi eld application. With their superior

performance and life cycle cost

advantages, it is no wonder fl uororesin

paints, based on Lumifl on, have since

been produced by many manufacturers

and applied to more than 150,000

industrial and architectural structures,

aircraft and automobiles worldwide.

Lumifl on is just one of the many

innovative products and materials

created by AGC, a company that

is driven to excel in a high-tech

world. What a difference it makes

for manufacturers, designers and

builders who demand the combination

of quality and value that only

Lumifl on delivers.

Lumifl on is known generically as

a FEVE resin. Its unique alternating

structure of fl uoroethylene and vinyl

ether segments is key to its ultra-

weatherability. Lumifl on is available in

a full product range of solventborne,

waterborne and powder resin

technology. It is offered as an OH

functional resin, thus allowing for

crosslinking in traditional polyurethane

chemistry but also as a high molecular

weight resin in emulsion form for

applications where crosslinking is

not desired.

Lumifl on coatings offer brilliant,

long-lasting colours with a wide gloss

range, which keep looking great year

after year. Due to its ability to resist UV

degradation, corrosion and chemical

exposure, Lumifl on continues to look

good without maintenance required –

estimated at up to 60 years! Its unique

chemical structure improves resistance

to corrosion from water, oxygen and

even chloride ions, ensuring a longer

life for industrial structures like bridges

with far less need for repainting.

With its long lifespan, Lumifl on

eliminates the environmental impact

of repeated repainting and recoating.

No other coating type can match

its combination of attractiveness,

application fl exibility and, as tests

and studies confi rm, long life and

weathering resistance. Because they

last so much longer, Lumifl on-based

coatings can substantially reduce any

project’s life cycle costs, including

maintenance costs, replacement costs

and recoating costs.

The product’s advantages are

superior durability and weatherability,

more brilliant, longer lasting colours,

a far wider gloss range than with

alternative products, the toughest, most

durable fi nish ever and the industry’s

leading longevity record. Add Lumifl on’s

unique capabilities for fi eld application

and you have an end product that looks

better for longer and ultimately costs

less. Longer life is also a formula for

sustainability, which is in keeping with

AGC’s mission statement, ‘Chemistry

for a Blue Planet’. For more information

on Lumifl on’s applications worldwide

please visit Stand F19. Discover

for yourself how good your bottom

line looks when you raise your own

standards with Lumifl on.

The Bühler way of producing coatings and inksBead mills deserve the centre stage

in the production process of the

coatings and inks industry. The quality

requirements from the customers are

becoming ever more demanding and

the cost pressure is increasing. With

standard milling approaches the profi t

is diminishing and choosing cheaper

raw material is causing troubles in the

grinding process, such as clogging

screens, out of range particle size

distribution and longer grinding

cycles. Saving on capital goods and

pigments, therefore, leads to the

opposite effect – increased costs and

quality issues.

The right milling equipment

makes the difference

A case study in an industrial

environment confi rms the importance

and benefi ts of choosing the most

suitable milling equipment and

grinding media size for a specifi c

grinding task. Bühler’s Cenomic™

full volume bead mill incorporates

patented solutions that allow higher

fl ow capability without compression of

grinding beads in the front section of

the chamber. The Cenomic bead mill

stands for a reduction of the specifi c

energy requirement, a narrow particle

size distribution and a higher product

quality with lower grinding costs.

The bead mill Cenomic is highly

recommended for processing

high-quality products like protective

coatings, paints, gravure inks and

many more.

Milling equipment comparison

The following example illustrates how

grinding time can be remarkably

reduced. A shorter grinding time

not only results in a more effi cient

production process but also realises

savings in labour costs. In addition,

the chart clearly states the decrease

in mass-specifi c energy consumption

only by using the right equipment.

The table above shows Grinding

of Non-Toluene and Non-MEK PU-

based gravure ink by comparing two

milling equipment:

Overall savings can be realised

As mentioned above, even with highly

increased product fl ow rates, the same

or even a better dispersion quality in

terms of fi neness, gloss and colour

strength can be achieved using the

Bühler Cenomic full volume bead mill.

The reduced grinding time per batch

has a direct impact on minimising the

grinding costs. But most important

are those savings that result from the

cutback in manpower, the depreciation

and utilities. Furthermore, not only the

grinding time was reduced but also

the specifi c energy amount per batch

was diminished, which again results in

energy cost savings. Stand L7

Oliver + Batlle’s fi lling solution for high viscosity productsRecently Oliver + Batlle was

commissioned to automate a wall

putty fi lling process. The request

posed several challenges, such

as high viscosity product, defi ned

and limited space in the customer’s

factory, high production needs and

optimisation of workfl ows.

The recommended solution

comprised a fully automatic packaging

line including a gravimetric fi lling unit

OB-130T, an automatic stackable

container dispenser Pailmanager V Flex,

a lid dispenser and a closing machine.

The OB-130 T fi lling unit can

process high viscosity products up to

500.000cP with signifi cant loads of

solids and can handle tapered, oval

or rectangular containers. Its double

fi lling station is equipped with two

dosing units, each with a 3” head,

and 60kg weigh-scale with motorised

roller conveyors.

Equipped with the intuitive and

easy to use control system OBmatic

Fill, the operator can customise the

most suitable fi lling fl ow for each

product formula and container format,

optimising its speed and dimension to

achieve the target weight accurately.

These fl ows can be recorded in

a recipe that will run whenever

it is required to manufacture a

combination of product/format,

thereby minimising the unit setup.

With the automatic stackable

container dispenser Pailmanager V

Flex, the company received a fully

automatic line from container de-

stacking until its closure.

The implementation of the

automatic line caused an impressive

increase in the production capacity

and the reduction of two employees

dedicated to the fi lling process,

as only one person is needed to

feed, manage and control the

entire line. Oliver + Batlle’s solution

provided the customer with a list of

advantages that radically changed its

production methodology:

• Small footprint

• High accuracy fi lling

• Easy cleaning of the fi lling heads

• Repeatable packaging process

• Continuity of the process

• Batch traceability

• Elimination of errors

• Filling two containers at once

Particle Analyzer

As you know, insuffi ciently or over-

ground material will cause a loss of

production time and higher costs.

With the traditional manual method

it is diffi cult to observe the fi neness

result correctly for the same sample

under different operators because the

fi neness is micron level and causes

differences between true particles and

air bubbles or erroneous matter.

With technology innovation and

improvement, BEVS has developed

the advanced Automated Particle

draw down the sample on the grind

gauge, generating the image by a

high resolution camera under the

Q. What do you feel the top two challenges for the

coatings industry are likely to be over the next fi ve

to 10 years?

A. Challenge 1: Sustainability: In my view,

sustainability of coatings will require more

modern research and more investment in R&D.

The regulations are becoming stricter with time

and to satisfy these regulations along with a

competitive customer oriented market will be

a challenge in the next fi ve to 10 years. One

thing should also be very clear, the fact that

lowering the concentration of VOC obtained

from lower concentration of various chemicals,

leading to low emission, is the complete

answer. This is especially true if performance

is diminished requiring greater quantities of

product and more application. This will lead

to an even higher carbon footprint than the

original product formulation. It should be kept

in mind that carbon footprint is calculated

based on raw materials consumed and energy

spent during manufacturing and application

and ultimately transferred to carbon

dioxide emission.

Challenge 2: Economic conditions: Because

of present economic conditions, it is getting

very diffi cult to predict the uncertainness in the

market. Most of the companies are looking for

a new market to sustain in present conditions.

Companies are undergoing many Internal

changes in BU operations to have good

control on revenues and also getting rid of

BU, which are not performing well. In 2016 we

have seen many businesses been sold to new

equity fi rms, which also brings uncertainty in

manufacturer- supplier relations.

Q. What are the major changes you’ve seen in

the Middle East and Gulf region over the past

fi ve to 10 years?

A. Downstream manufacturing using

petrochemical derivatives. There are two phases

of the answer, fi rst is before oil prices slumped

and second is the recovery story. Before

October 2014 the Middle East was performing

well, with a growth rate of 3.6%. New projects

were coming up and government spending was

good in civil projects. The UAE aimed to spend

US$8.4bn on the World Expo Trade 2020, Qatar

got the bid for hosting the FIFA World Cup for

which it has started working on extended soccer

stadia at a total coat of US$100bn.

After the oil price slump in mid 2014,

governments in the GCC have reduced

spending basically in infrastructure projects,

which has had an impact on the coating

industry as well. The GCC countries have

ambitious plans to diversify their economies by

becoming less dependent on revenue from oil.

This is to be achieved by downstream

manufacturing using petrochemical derivatives

as raw material for a variety of consumer and

industrial products, which will open new sectors

for industrial coatings. One good example of this

is Sadara Chemicals Co, which has recently

inaugurated a US$20bn giant petrochemical

company at Jubail Industrial City.

Q. What trend in the market did you notice in

2016, which you feel will continue this year?

A. Environmentally friendly paints and

coatings. Authorities in the Middle East have

begun to acknowledge the region’s sizable

carbon footprint, most evident in per capita

terms. Energy production accounts for the

majority of carbon emissions in the Arab world.

The awareness about environmentally friendly

paints has increased among customers. People

are asking for safer paints for their homes. Big

projects related to governments in the GCC

are asking for zero VOC and anti-allergy paints.

TSC’s cool pigment technology also offers

to reduce urban heat effect, which ultimately

reduces the need for air-conditioning.

One environmental perspective highlighting

the outstanding opportunities for the industry’s

players has been the plan to build Masdar City, in

the UAE, billed as the world’s fi rst carbon-neutral,

waste-free city. The city, under construction in

Abu Dhabi, is an emerging ‘cleantech cluster’.

Governments are getting really strict about

waste water treatment and imposing a heavy

penalty if found guilty. Another project of

a community waste water treatment plant

is emerging, which could reduce the cost

of waste water treatment for companies.

Customs approval of any import also requires

more documents for health and safety so it’s

high time for each company to have a separate

EHS department to deal with all environment

issues related to its products.

Q. Where, in your opinion, will be the next

emerging market to make its presence felt?

A. Africa. Africa is in the process of becoming

the new frontier for emerging market

investment. Flow on investment in the entire

continent is gathering pace, Yes, South

Africa and Egypt entertain a good chunk

of that but countries, like Kenya, Ghana,

Botswana, Angola, Mozambique and Ethiopia

are attracting good investment. The IMF has

projected that during the next fi ve years 10

of the 20 fastest growing economies will

be in sub-Saharan Africa and two will be in

North Africa.

Many MNCs have visualised the potential

in Africa. Companies, like AkzoNobel has long

been positioned with paint interest in North

Africa, while PPG has also extended its reach

with its takeover of Sigmakalon. BASF is slowly

getting business in the refi nish market and Asian

Paint’s takeover of SCIB paints has increased its

infl uence in the North African market. Besides

these MNCs, local companies are also

performing extremely well and gaining their

share in the market.

North Africa is certainly promising. Egypt

is valuable to the paint industry as it holds

enormous consumer potential. The country

has a population approaching 79M but a paint

market of only about 230,000t. After the Arab

Spring, the coating industry was impacted a

lot in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Sudan. Current

currency fl uctuations against the US dollar

have also impacted the local economies.

But these economies are recovering and,

probably, in the next few years they will be

back on track.

We caught up with Faraz Shahid, Technical Manager, Tinting Systems Company, to ask him about his views on the coatings market in the Middle East

Challenges and trends in the market place

JZ Series: essential lab equipmentThe JZ series of synthetic resin pilot
