Quotation Marks

Quotation marks are used in writing to show the beginning and the end of report speech or a quoted word or phrase.

eg.: Sandra said, “I’ve got to study hard for the finals.” The colonel shouted: “Fire!”

ATTENTION!

Do not use quotation marks for:

a) Indirect Quotationse.g.: Jim said that he would be out of town the following weekend.

b) Proverbs e.g.: The early bird gets the worm.

Punctuation Within Quotations

All punctuation marks must be used according to the sentence within the quotations.

e.g.:Sally asked, “Where did you put the groceries ?” Peter said, “Darn it!” Pam said to Paul, “I wish I could s...”

What punctuation marks should be used before quotations?

A comma is used if the introductory verb comes before quotations; however, if the tone of the speech is formal a colon should be used.

e.g.: Peter asked Gloria, “Will you go out with me?”

e.g: The president said: “I resign.”

e.g.: Jean said,“I think I have a fever.”

e.g.:“I’ll get to N.Y. at 7 a.m.” Julia said.

What punctuation marks are used between quotations and the introductory verb, when it comes at the end of the sentence?

When are punctuation marks used after quotations?

When the punctuation marks do not refer to the sentences within quotations.

e.g.: Stop telling me “No way”!

e.g.: When will Jim tell me “I love you”?

Ellipsis

Ellipsis are generally used to indicate the omission of the words within a quoted passage.

e.g.: “These farms produce ... wheat, corn, vegetables and fruits.” (a wide range of alimentary products)

e.g.: “But these pants have ... all right, I’ll press them.” (to be pressed)

Ellipsis are used to indicate a speaker’s voluntarily unfinished sentence in a dialogue.

- Mr. Wislow: What? Are you going to get married to Marlot? That p...? - Gilbert: Prostitute? Yes, I am.

- Rita: Do you know what Sally called me of? A t... - Beth: Tramp? Don’t be upset. She is envious of you, that’s all.

Insert ellipsis in their appropriate places.

The Period, the Question Mark, and the Exclamation Point.

The period is generally used to end a declarativeor imperative sentence (but not an exclamatory sentence).e.g.: All exercises have to be handed in one week before the finals.The period is generally used to end an indirect question.e.g.: Beth asked Tom where her new book was.

The period is also used to follow some abbreviations.

Geographic names:U.S.A. (United States of America)C.I.S. (Commonwealth of Independent Sates)

Academic degrees: B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) M.A. (Master of Arts)

The question mark is used to end a sentence,a clause, or a phrase (or after a single word)that asks a question.

e.g.: Where is Charles now?

e.g. “You can’t touch this book.” “Why not?”

The question mark is also used to informally indicate doubt or uncertainty.

e.g.: I think I know this song. Imagine?

The exclamation point is used to end a clause, a sentence, or phrase (or after a single word) that indicates emotion or feeling, especiallysurprise, anger, admiration, etc.

e.g.: You are always so nice!

e.g.: What a beautiful baby!

e.g.: Beat it!

e.g.: Wow!
