Measures of Central Tendency
Acres of FarmlandUse the data to the left to find the
answer to each question below:1. Find the average farm acreage in
the southernmost states: Texas, New Mexico, and Kansas.
2. Find the average farm acreage in the northernmost states: Montana, North Dakota, and Nebraska.
3. Find the median, and mode of all the farm acreage.
State Acres (millions)Texas 131Montana 59Kansas 46
Nebraska 46New Mexico 46South Dakota 44North Dakota 39
Mean
Mean is just another word for average, and to find the average you add up all the values you need and divide by how many numbers there are. We will do it with the states Texas, New Mexico, and Kansas.
For this one we will use 131, 46, and 46.
131+ 46+ 46= _____
Then divide that answer by three. The answer is___________ million.
Mean
Now we will do the same thing with the Northernmost states; Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.
For this we will use 59, 46, 44, and 39.
59+ 46+ 44+ 39=______
Then divide that answer by four. The answer is __________ millions.
MedianMedian is the middle or half-
way point of all the data values. The easiest way to do that is to line up all the data values in order from least to greatest. If there is an odd amount of numbers its just the middle number, but if there is an even amount of numbers you take the average of the two middle values.
When we line up all our values it looks like this:
39, 44, 46, 46, 46, 59, 131
Is there an even or odd number of values?
So what would the median be?
Mode
This is the easiest of all the central tendencies because it just tells us the value or values that occur most often.
All our numbers are,39, 44, 46, 46, 46, 59, &
131.
So which value occurs most often?
