“MESSAGE”Message from the European Union Ambassador
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 8th European Film Festival in Khartoum.
The festival is the most established event in Sudan that presents the latest of European cinema for everyone. Come and enjoy the show of European unity in diversity between November 20 and 30, 2016.
In 2016, the festival brings together eighteen participating countries. The new Comers include Ireland, Portugal, and Slovenia in addition to Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, the European Union, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
In parallel, the 2016 edition of the festival provides new screening venues at Al Faisal Cultural Centre, the Embassy of the Netherlands and DAL Excellence Centre in addition to Goethe-Institut, Institut Francais and British Council. The six screening venues showcase the increasing participation which reached 120,000 audiences over the past seven years.
For eight years, the European Film Festival has been at the forefront of introducing audiences to the visual stories of European filmmakers. We are deeply committed to bringing the best of the best to the screens in Khartoum.
In 2016, we are proud to display “We are all Sudan”, a documentary directed by Mia Bittar, which was co-funded by the European Union and the United Nations Development Program. The film promotes the values of the festival; enhancing peace, tolerance and diversity. We wish to plant the seeds of these values, and promot them.
I invite you to attend the festival screenings. you will not need a ticket or a visa to discover and become part of the magic of European cinema.
Finally, I am grateful for the continued support we receive from the Sudanese authorities, namely the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs, the local sponsors who strongly believe like I do in the need for promoting culture and arts in Sudan.
Jean-Michel Dumond
About the Festival
The European Film Festival in Sudan started in November 2008. The festival screened films from ten European countries. More than 90 films were screened since then. The films present the latest carefully selected cinematic art in Europe. Most of the movies were nominated, won or screened at the international film festivals. In the past years, the festival screenings are organized at the European cultural centers in Khartoum: Goethe Institut, the British Council and Institut Francais. Around 120,000 cinema lovers attended the official and special screenings of the festival. All the films are screened for free. The guests are invited to arrive at the venues in good time, on a first come first served basis.
Over the years, the festival provided a number of cinematography workshops for journalists, women artists and youth cinema makers, and showcased also Sudanese movies. The festival is widely attended by Sudanese artists, celebrities, cinema makers and cinephiles. One major objective of the festival is to provide a bridge for understanding between Sudan and Europe through culture and fine arts. The festival also informs the Sudanese audience about the latest productions in Europe and artistic trends by famous European and international cinema makers. This opens horizons to new ideas, discussions, and professional relations, encouraging Sudanese film makers to use creative approaches to cinema making and to organise local festivals.
The festival also promotes values. Most of all is the unity of Europe in the diversity of its cultures, societies, minorities, arts and creativity. The sponsoring European countries do not only promote their own films but showcase European cinema and values across the world. Moreover the productions are jointly directed with artists from many countries of the world. The festival encourages the values of peaceful co-existence, tolerance, dialogue among civilizations, and respect for human rights, inter-faith dialogue and quality entertainment. The festival attracted many local and international initiatives including the Blue Heart Campaign of the United Nations to combat human trafficking.
The festival movies are carefully selected to respect the local customs and traditions of the Sudanese people. This is done in collaboration with the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs of Sudan. Many local sponsors are also encouraged to support the festival screenings. They play an important role in promoting understanding and encourage the Sudanese public to appreciate the message of the festival.
The European Film Festival has become the oldest such festival in Sudan. Attracting a wide local and international audience, it is also considered one of the main cultural events of the short Sudanese winter.
The organisation committee of the festival is delighted to have continued this important cultural project for eight years in a row. The positive feedback, high turnout and the established partnerships demonstrate the success of this vibrant display of fine arts in the Sudan.

RomaniaFilm: I’m an Old Communist HagDirector: Stere Gulea
Synopsis: The story takes place in 2010, in post-communist Romania, in which some of those who fully lived in the communist period don’t seem to fit anymore. The main character and her husband are about to receive a visit from their daughter, who has been living in the States for the last 10 years, and her American boyfriend. While having dinner with her reunited family, the daughter realizes that she actually liked it in the communist era, that she was better off, and that most of the characteristics of a true communist still gather in her. During the whole movie, the mother has flashbacks from that “golden” period, and somehow tries to recapture what her life once was, while trying to figure out and solve her daughters’ money problems. It is a funny movie, especially for those who know something about communism and what happened then in Eastern Europe, though based on weird yet very real situations people were faced with back than (until 1989).
