Issue 36 - July 18 Message from Mr Mellen After a long and busy academic year, we finally come to the end of the Summer Term. With one week to go, we can reflect on a year where many good things have happened, the school has moved forward and students have gained from a rich level of experience, both inside and outside the classroom. On Friday 20th July we will celebrate many of those achievements in a final assembly before school closes for the Summer at 12.30. Most of you should feel very proud of the work that you have put in during 2017-18 and the progress that you have made. The very small number of you who have not contributed positively to our school will need to do better next year if you are to fulfill your potential and gain the results you are capable of. Still to come before the term ends we have Year 11 Prom, reward trips to Blackpool and Alton Towers and much more. Once we have closed for the Summer we return to school on Tuesday 4th September for another exciting year! Have a good weekend and I look forward to a great final week of term CedarMountHigh @ Paris 18 Miss Morris Sadie Massey Awards Weather Workshop Diversity Week Parent Pay Sept 18

Paris 18

Last week Miss Morris, Mr. Gibson, Mr. Loynes, Miss Holmes and Miss Desidari had the envious task of accompanying pupils to Paris for four days. Even though it was the busiest four days EVER….everyone fell in love with Paris and had an amazing time. Pupils visited the Louvre Museum and were in awe of the artwork and the historical artifacts - they even got the chance to see the Mona Lisa! Arriving at the Eiffel tower was exhilarating for everyone, this was the real deal, it was up close and personal and definitely the best way to view the city! The final leg of the trip was to Disneyland Paris where pupils soaked up the atmosphere, donned their mouse ears (like you do) before heading off to enjoy the rides. Great trip, great time, great memories.

Sadie Massey Awards

On the 28th of June Miss Molloy and Dr Boyd had the privilege of accompanying our student’s to the Portico Sadie Massey Awards Ceremony. Four of our students received prizes - Amira in Y8 won the KS3 book review category, in which Chloe and Nafia (Y9) received special commendations. Last year's winner, Aya also received a special commendation in the KS4 category. Chloe was unable to make it but the rest of us squeezed ourselves into a taxi and braved the sweltering afternoon heat! In the gorgeous setting of the nineteenth century Portico Library we were treated to performance poetry, speeches and readings; Amira read her heart wrenching book review of When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit to the rapt audience.  From a teachers’ perspective the students’ successes are made even more amazing because they worked independently, in their own time and with little teacher input. We quadrupled our winners from last year to this, next year we’re aiming for double figures!

Speaking of Miss Morris......

Give a thought to Miss Morris whilst you're sunning yourself on a beach or watching Love Island, this summer she is off to Athens to teach teenage refugees. The centre are short of pens, pencils, paper...in fact everything therefore, before she jets off she plans to raise £500 for much needed resources. Please visit her 'just giving' page and donate whatever you can.

On Wednesday 11th July some of our year 9 and year 10 students attended a Weather Forecast workshop at The Coach House in Manchester.  They spent an hour listening to a lecture from Professor David Schultz from the University of Manchester on how to produce a weather forecast and why forecasters don’t always get the forecast correct.  The second part of the trip was the most fun for the students.  They had a hands on practical session trying to produce Global Warming in a bottle.  The students did Cedar Mount Academy proud working well in teams to plan their practical, setting up the equipment and making conclusions compared to real life.  They spent the afternoon being real scientists experimenting with Raspberry Pi technology and testing ideas of why carbon dioxide heats up the atmosphere.

House Competition - Diversity Week

Last week was Diversity Week in school. Students wore rainbow ribbons in support and raised over £50 for Just Like Us. Students also took part in a house competition which produced lots of excellent submissions. Mr Mellen judged the best entries. The winner was the 'Love is Love' artwork by Avril from Modahl. Second place was Maheen from Pankhurst for her 'Diversity' canvas. Third place was the LGBT cake by Samreen and Masooma from Turing. The artwork will be displayed in our diversity cabinet for all students and visitors to look at on the Humanities corridor from September.
