Welcome to the second issue of ME Magazine.

Well what a couple of months it’s been here at Corporate Cabs, with milestones such as ME Magazine, and our introduction of EFTPoS. The response to our first issue of ME has been overwhelming and we appreciate all the positive feedback we’ve received from our drivers, advertisers, peers and you, our clients. our aim was to provide Corporate Cab clients with something a little bit extra when travelling with us, and it appears we have exceeded those expectations with the launch of ME Magazine. This issue, we are proud to bring you informative articles from around the country profiling the latest and best in the world of luxury. Sit back and enjoy the latest issue, and remember it’s yours to take away with you.

The world’s biggest sporting event is about to start and it is crucial that, with so many visitors visiting our shores, New Zealand makes the most of this opportunity, particularly in all aspects of the lucrative tourism industry. As a country we sometimes let ourselves down with a lack of professionalism, and in the service industry we know that first impressions most definitely count – especially when it comes to word of mouth and repeat business. If you are entertaining important guests during this event why not offer them one of our day or multi-day Corporate Tours. With personalised packages available in and around all our cities of operation, there is no better way to explore New Zealand, whilst ensuring you and your guests are well looked after. or alternatively you could have us take your clients to the out of town games via the scenic route and have them enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.

Rugby fever is well and truly alive in the Corporate Cabs office and two of our directors have taken things to another level. Released in time for the tournament, Murray Bolton has penned a song, ‘We Wear Black’, with all proceeds going to The CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust.

Murray, who is more familiar with the boardroom than the recording studio, penned the lyrics after being given a recording session for his birthday. He called on musicians Aroon Xayalith, Ryan ousten and Craig Marshall, who is also a director, to help write and record the single at Roundhead Studios. Make sure you download your copy from iTunes to support this great charity.

Recently, Corporate Cabs flew five deserving families from Christchurch up to Auckland to see the fantastic show Walking with Dinosaurs. our drivers enjoyed meeting them during their journey and we received some wonderful cards and letters from the families saying how fantastic the trip was and how much they enjoyed the break away from Christchurch. We feel honoured to be able to bring a ray of light into these family’s lives after recent events.

I hope you enjoy the second issue of ME Magazine and remember if you’d like to see something included, please contact us at [email protected].

Have a safe and enjoyable Rugby World Cup.

Kind Regards

Justin Marshall is the highest capped scrum half in All Black history with 81 appearances under his belt including captain of the All Blacks in1997. Born in Mataura, his illustrious career also includes periods with Southland, Canterbury and the Crusaders, as well as English and Welsh teams; The Ospreys, The Leeds Tykes and The Saracens. Now residing in Queenstown with his family, Justin is forging a new career in TV rugby commentary. ME Magazine editor, Naomi Lindsay, caught up with Justin over a glass of Pinot Noir at Amisfield Winery.

One thing you must do in Mataura is…fish the world-famous brown trout river and then stop into the Falls Hotel (local pub nicknamed the zoo, as that’s where all the animals drink) for a pint with your catch of the day.

My favourite thing about living in Queenstown is… the lifestyle; golf, skiing, boating, wineries and of course adventure sports all capped off by a superb lifestyle of bars and restaurants.

Invercargill is NOT the arse end of the world because…Bluff oysters are just down the road.

My favourite rugby player of all time is... Lachlan and Fletcher Marshall; these boys have got game!!

My favourite car is...Jaguar C-X75. Google this beast, only 250 to be made, valued at £700,000GBP.

My favourite sport after rugby is…that’s a tough one, but I love golf especially at Jacks Point, but equally I’m into squash, water skiing, cricket and lawn bowls. Everything really, let’s just say I love all sport.

My best and worst career moments were… My first test match; the ultimate accolade in sport is playing for the All Blacks. My worst was being put on the bench for the 1999 RWC semi-final against France.

My favourite way to relax is…a mojito in the sun with a book or iPod on my sun lounger in Fiji; minus budgie smugglers of course, (speedos).

My worst habit is…my memory. It’s terrible. Names, dates, games; I forget a lot! Sorry what was the question?

My ultimate overseas destination is... Anywhere in Europe in summer is amazing. It’s a draw for me between Sotograde, Costa del Sol in Spain and Lake Como in Italy.

My favourite dining experience is...the Michelin Star restaurant, Guy Savoy, in Paris; 13 courses of pure delight with a different wine for each course. oh and of course, Ballarat Trading Co. and Winnies in Queenstown.

My favourite hideaway is...The Marlborough Sounds.

My favourite drink is...a good Mojito. I have also been enjoying Jameson Whisky and Dry, plus Central otago Pinot is just pure bliss.

My favourite venue for catching up with friends is... the new Hilton Hotel in Queenstown.

My most recent indulgent purchase was...the new TaylorMade R11 TP driver. I didn’t need it but it’s got a very cool look so couldn’t help myself.

My must do pre-game ritual is…to tape my wrists with white tape as I did on my first test for the All Blacks and have continued to do so for the rest of my career.

Ex-All Black, Justin Marshall, relaxes with ME over a glass of Pinot

Power, Performance and Prestige with the new BMW 5 Series

Eagerly anticipated and highly sought-after by motorists worldwide, the new BMW 5 Series has been recognised as New Zealand’s most awarded new model in 2010.

“The new BMW 5 Series is an exceptionally accomplished vehicle,

delivering power, performance and renowned sheer driving pleasure,” the

Managing Director of BMW Group New Zealand, Mark Gilbert says.

“Winning a Car of the Year title provides significant third party

endorsement of what we already knew – that the new BMW 5 Series

really is the ultimate driving machine.”

A variety of titles recognise the ultimate executive sports sedan’s segment-

leading technology, dynamism, efficiency and safety, once again marking

the 5 Series as the epitome of aesthetic design and supreme driving

pleasure.

The all-new 5 Series claimed the New Zealand Motoring Writers’

Guild Car of the Year title, the third time the BMW 5 Series has won

the accolade (the previous occasions being 1988 and 1996), an

unprecedented achievement in the twenty-two year history of the award.

ownership of the new model is now even more attainable as it is available

with BMW Select, a game-changing finance package which provides for

peace-of-mind motoring as it guarantees the minimum future value of your

car. The 5 Series line-up includes Sedan and Touring body styles with a

range of frugal yet powerful diesel and turbo-powered petrol engines and

the fire-breathing M5 performance model, set for release in coming months.

All models in the 5 Series range offer class leading features such as the BMW Heads-Up Display, which projects the current speed or navigation instructions directly into your field of vision, plus front and rear park-distance control as standard across the range.

The amazing Surround-view and Night-vision technology with detection of individual persons are also available, as is Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go, Parking Assistant, Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning. In addition to setting new benchmarks in terms of design, driving dynamics, efficiency, or comfort, safety is a particular strong-point of the new 5 Series and ranks as one of the safest vehicles ever tested.

An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard with all engine variants of the BMW 5 Series. With its innovative gear set configuration, a unique level of inner efficiency and optimised weight, the eight-speed automatic transmission combines outstanding gearshift comfort, dynamic performance and efficiency of the highest level.

The final model of the 5 Series range will be revealed in New Zealand in 2012, with the launch of the new M5. This will be the fifth generation of the world’s most successful high-performance premium sedan and will be the world premiere of a newly developed BMW M high-performance 4.4-litre v8 engine with M Twin Power Turbo technology. The new engine develops an impressive 412kW of power, 680Nm of torque and a scorching 0-100km/h time of only 4.4 seconds. New Zealand pricing and specification details will be released closer to launch next year.

Sir Peter Charles Leitch, KNZM, QSM, is a New Zealand businessman, also known as The Mad Butcher. Although well known for the chain of butcheries he founded, Sir Peter is just as well known for his charity and fundraising work and his promotion of rugby league, especially the Warriors.

Although he says he does not know how much he has raised or personally given to charity, it runs to millions of dollars and he was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in 1991 for charitable work. Today he devotes his time to his extensive charity commitments, his beloved vodafone Warriors and kayaking.

Sir Peter announced he would be taking a step back from public speaking to spend more time with his family. ME Magazine editor, Naomi Lindsay,

tracked down this well-known Kiwi to find out what makes him tick.

How would you describe your leadership style and why has it worked for you? I am just myself. I lead from the front, even when I am sick, and that courage inspires people to follow you. They see you battling and they think if he can do it, I can do it. But it was definitely a learning curve in the early days. At first I didn’t have a bloody clue and I made mistakes, but the reality is you need to respect your staff as you can’t run a business properly without them. Your business is only as good as your staff.

What is the worst business decision you ever made? My worst decision was opening the shop in otara, as I opened it for the wrong reasons. I won’t go into the details why. The best decision I ever made was to hire CEo Michael Morton to run my business. He had the skills I never

had, which enabled us to grow and he now owns the company.

Are entrepreneurs made or born? I don’t have a thought on that as I don’t think I am an entrepreneur. I am a butcher. I don’t think I am special; I just do what I do. occasionally I think I am gifted, but mostly I believe I am just passionate about what I do. My life has never been about money; it’s about giving to people and doing what I can.

Who do you admire most in the world and why? My wife! Because she puts up with me. She’s the rock behind me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. In the business world I respect Michael Hill (Jewellery Magnet) and Stephen Tindall (The Warehouse) as they have come from ordinary backgrounds. When you have a golf course in your backyard and a super yacht worth millions, you’ve got to be pretty inspirational.

Do you ever relax and unwind? I relax in my own way when I can, but I can’t help myself, I just love helping people. I watch Emmerdale Farm on Tv every day and when I can I get in the kayak, off Waiheke Island.

Do you ever look back at your career and success and think how did that happen to me? Every day. Every day. Every day I think that. Every day I am humbled.

Do you ever feel pressure to help others now you have done so much for so many people? No, never. If we all did a little bit, we could make big changes. I am not a knight in shining armour, I have to turn some people down, but I do what I can for who I can, when I can.

ME – Sir Peter Leitch aka The Mad ButcherWhat is your favourite meat? Rump Steak, but Janice does the cooking. She’s the king of the kitchen and I am king of the barbeque.

How do you like your steak cooked? Medium.

What’s your favourite restaurant? None. My favourite place is my home- you can’t beat a home cooked meal.

Who is your favourite Warriors player of all time? I have a very close relationship with Stacy Jones, but there are so many good players, I love them all.

Have you ever been to a day spa? I cannot confirm or deny that!

Have you ever done a bungy jump? Yes with AJ Hackett himself. It was a great honour, as I admire what he’s done.

What do you most love about your wife? Lots of things. She’s been there for me from day 1 and supported everything I did, plus she gave me 2 beautiful daughters.

Why did you choose to have red branding for the Mad Butcher? Just happened really, no planning involved at all, I am a butcher for god’s sakes! Meat’s red, so the signage is red.

What is the thing in life that you detest the most? I hate people with their heads up their arses. I like real people.

What is your idea of the ultimate job? I am a butcher through and through, so a butcher is my ultimate job. Meeting and chatting with people every day is great.

You talk a lot about your wife Janice, she must be a very special woman. How do you balance all the aspects of your Mad Butcher life? To be honest it’s been bloody hard to balance. Sometimes

things have come at a cost to my family, which is why I have decided to

spend more time with them.

What is the one thing you wish you had done but haven’t had the chance to yet? I wish I had spent more time with my daughters when

I was younger. Apart from that, nothing! I am happy as a pig in s**t!

You seem to spend a lot of time on this side of the world. Have you travelled much? I have travelled a lot over the years and I have

been privileged to visit some amazing places, too many to name. But I

love this country and everything about it, so my charity belongs at home. I

rarely give overseas as I prefer to only help New Zealand people. I could

not have done what I have done without people buying meat from my

shops, so I want to give back. I have been very blessed and I am humbled

by my success. I am very choked to be honest.

The Mad Butcher’s note: I have been blessed over the years with wonderful friends and key people who support me in the community and my work and make me look good. Without them I couldn’t do what I do.

Metro Mark plays sous chef at the True South restaurant

Our metrosexual writer Mark hits the road again, this time visiting The Rees Hotel’s in-house True South Restaurant in Queenstown to spend some time learning from one of the country’s best chefs. Head Chef, Ben Batterbury, comes to The Rees via Bristol England with a background in exclusive lodges and country hotels. Ben’s passion for food results in simple and easy to identify flavours which allow the diner to indulge in some tasty moments.

on the plate today was Ben’s wonderful Lightly Curried Lamb Sweetbreads with Parsnip, vanilla Mash and a Liquorice Glaze (see recipe below). For an ex-Southlander this is my idea of heaven. Not an ingredient commonly used in restaurants, Lamb Sweetbreads are an inspired choice. If you are not familiar with this delicacy (our camerawoman wasn’t), it is the thyroid gland of a lamb and for those in the know, this amounts to the meat equivalent of a beautiful oyster.

Ben’s method is to lightly coat the sweetbreads with a combination of rice flour, curry powder and, believe it or not, cocoa nibs. The ultimate effect is a crispy outside and a tantalizingly soft inside. Ben’s mantra of using simple and recognisable tastes certainly works here as the flavours work well in synergy, but are all wonderfully distinct.

It’s testimony to Ben’s enthusiasm for his craft that less familiar produce, such as sweetbreads, are on and stay on his menu. Any taster will certainly be a convert, just ask our camerawoman.

Metro Mark’s Note: Ben Batterbury is an asset to the Rees Hotel and his degustation menus are renowned countrywide. The hotel’s regular wine maker dinners are fully attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend, due to Ben’s creative flair and clever wine and food matches.

Metro Mark plays sous chef at the True South restaurant

Ben’s Lightly Curried Lamb Sweetbreads with Parsnip, Vanilla Mash and a Liquorice Glaze

Serves 4

500g lamb sweetbreads (soaked overnight in cold water)

3tbsp curry powder

1tbsp rice flour

1tbsp ground cocoa nibs (optional)

4 large parsnips, peeled, centre wood removed

2tbsp unsalted butter

¼ vanilla bean seeds scraped from pod

500 ml chicken stock

250 ml red wine

5g crushed liquorice root

1 parsnip

A handful of spinach leaves

A few coriander leaves

vinaigrette made with curry oil and rice wine vinegar

After soaking the sweetbreads overnight in the fridge, rinse and drain them. Have a pan of salted boiling water ready and drop the sweetbreads in for about 30 seconds to a minute, then plunge into iced water.

Remove the outside membrane from the sweetbreads and chill.

Take a heavy bottomed saucepan and place in the 4 parsnips, butter, vanilla and just enough water to cover the parsnips. Boil rapidly until the water has evaporated and the butter emulsified, then season and mash. If you prefer a smoother puree, place in a blender. Reserve.

To make the glaze, place the chicken stock, red wine and liquorice into a pan and reduce until almost syrupy and pass through a sieve to remove the liquorice root.

Thinly slice strips from the remaining parsnip with a peeler and deep fry at 140oC , until golden and crispy.

To serve, mix the flour and cocoa (if using), curry powder and then coat the sweetbreads. Fry them in a hot, oiled pan until golden, add the spinach and drain on a cloth. Arrange the sweetbreads on top of the parsnip mash and spinach, drizzle with the liquorice glaze and curry dressing then top with the crispy parsnips and coriander leaves. Enjoy!

My dad is Scottish and I am proud to have Celtic blood flowing through my veins. As a child, I spent many holidays in Scotland visiting lochs and castles and love the history and passion of my heritage. As a little girl, I would often wonder what it would be like to actually live in a real castle; I mean what little girl wouldn’t? Having left the UK many years ago now, I sometimes miss the heritage and history of the country and so when the opportunity arose to stay and dine at a castle, it was a chance to realise a little girl’s romantic dream.

Camp Estate is a beautifully decorated country estate with a neo-classical design, and is part of New Zealand’s only castle, Larnach Castle. Perfectly nestled amid rolling countryside on the otago Peninsula near Dunedin, Camp Estate is a new addition to the historic castle estate and the brain child of Norcombe Barker, the son of the well-known Barker family. Norcombe saw a ‘great opportunity’ when he bought the home last year at a mortgagee sale and after extensive refurbishing he opened the home in January this year.

The result is a beautifully designed, art-deco home with great attention to the detail of the period. Each of the five individually-designed rooms, as well as the stunning communal areas, were crafted by the owner, Margaret Barker, who definitely has a keen eye for mixing old with new.

The drive to Larnach Castle is via a stunning and picturesque drive around the winding otago Peninsula road, before heading inland to an elevated hilltop which affords great views over Dunedin and the Peninsula.

Stay with

our first stop before check in was a tour of the castle and extensive gardens, where we learned about the tragic life of the original creator of the castle, William Larnach. I visited many castles growing up, but the chance to visit one in New Zealand was a privilege and with rumours of ghosts walking the corridors, I couldn’t wait to see if they were true.

After our tour, we drove the mere 500 metres to Camp Estate where we were greeted by our lovely host for the weekend, Chris. Chris has been at the castle for many years and for the entire weekend we felt like it was our home and we were thoroughly pampered.

on entering Camp Estate, my jaw literally dropped. The entrance is one of the most spectacular welcomes I have ever received, with bright, white floors, walls and ceiling contrasting with snippets of black. The high ceiling accentuates the wide, large staircase, which is the focal point of the room. This is definitely the epitome of making a grand entrance.

accord certainly helped fuel rumours of an otherworldly presence.

The next day Chris cooked the 10 guests at Camp Estate breakfast to order, and we all ate together, creating a very intimate and unique experience to meet other people, enhancing the personal service we had already come to expect at the estate.

Camp Estate offers a very unique experience, in a modern, exclusive, country estate atmosphere. The chance to mix modern style with the history of Larnach Castle was fantastic. Whilst we didn’t encounter any ghostlike presence, the stories themselves left us wondering and they more than satisfied my childhood curiosity of ghosts in the attic.

Editor’s Note: Request one of the rooms with a bath for added luxury.

Naomi Lindsay experiences Art-deco Excellence at this Idyllic Country Estate

The attention to detail throughout Camp Estate is phenomenal with superbly crafted art deco style lamps, mirrors, door frames and key furniture pieces a feature of every room in the house.

Check-in was an informal process conducted in the sitting room where the natural fire roared to life, creating a warm and welcoming environment, which felt more like our home sitting room, rather than a check-in desk at a hotel. As we were dining at the castle that evening, we also pre-ordered our meal ahead of time before being escorted to our room.

our room was very bright and spacious with warm, brown tones throughout and we were lucky enough to have great views overlooking the grounds and water views of the Peninsula. A mirrored art deco style table was not only a great feature, but also served as a desk for the laptop notebook (there’s one in every room), which added a modern element for those wanting to keep in touch with the outside world. The gas fireplace, which was lit when we arrived, enhanced the atmosphere.

Chris drove us to the castle for dinner and we were escorted home again afterwards. Dining in a castle is an experience everyone must have as it is truly unique. The history lessons from the day came to life at night as Wilhelm, our maître de/actor for the evening, regaled the 26 guests with anecdotes from the castle’s owners and guests over the years.

With the lights dimmed and the fire roaring, it really felt like we were back in the early 1900s as all the guests enjoyed the 3 course meal together in the dining room. The door opening and closing seemingly on its own

Do wine awards help or hinder?

Wine

There seems to be a constant stream of awards flowing through the wine industry. Flecked with bronze, silver and gold, the stream flows quickly, spraying its medals on to just about every wine on the shelf. It’s almost impossible to find a wine that hasn’t got at least one, so Paul Tudgay, a sommelier and an educator in wine theory

and appreciation at the Queenstown Resort College, delves into the world of wine awards.

Wine awards exist to measure wine quality as an aid to the consumer, but with over 5,000 choices available on our shelves, selecting your tipple can be confusing. Wine awards also provide producers with ammunition to sell their wine, that is, if they are successful. It comes at a relatively low cost and is low risk (who really knows if a wine doesn’t win an award?) and a useful marketing tool when promoted properly. However, there are so many competitions out there, which ones should we take seriously? They all use gold, silver and bronze as a medal of excellence, but with different sets of judges and rules, the quality of awards vary.

The Air New Zealand wine awards are held yearly and are considered to be the most prestigious in this country. one thing they do is to invite overseas judges to taste and assess the wines. This is important because it means the awards are less likely to develop a ‘cellar palate’, that is, to look at our own wines in an overly positive way.

The Sydney Wine Awards are also unique in that the wines are judged with

food. It was set up to provide consumers with recommendations of wines that enhance the dining experience. Gold medal winning wines in almost all other wine competitions are often criticised for being big and bold but not exactly food friendly. In this case, the wines are tasted with food. Who wouldn’t want to be a wine judge at this competition?

Another very prestigious competition is the San Francisco International Wine Competition. A gold medal here means that the wine has competed against other similar drops from over 29 countries and it’s a great way to see how our New Zealand wines fit into the bigger picture. It’s also worth noting that just because a wine wins a medal doesn’t mean you will like it. Many great wines probably wouldn’t win because their nuances are more subtle. Another point to consider is that wines were never meant to be tasted this way. Wine is meant to be enjoyed in the company of friends and family, not slurped and spat into buckets by their hundred. But, if we are to pick through the thousands of choices on our shelves, those shiny medals can be a useful guide.

Marlborough vineyard, Morton Estate, won a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Wine Competition for the 2000 Blanc de Blanc Methode Traditionelle. The Morton Estate Cellar Aged range also picked up Silver and Bronze accolades in the same awards.

Take to the water with ownaship, the latest in boat ownership

own

Auckland based boat company, Ownaship, offers a new and excitingly different notion of owning a boat at a fraction of the cost of sole boat ownership. Research indicates that the average boat owner does not use his boat more than 33 days in any one year, but the expenses of owning and maintaining a boat are endless. ME Magazine spoke to Simon Barker, owner of the company, to find out more about this exciting concept.

ownaship is a family owned New Zealand business, which started as a

result of many years of boating and a love of the water. Simon says that

having been a “boaty” all his life, he understands the joys and drawbacks

of owning and maintaining various types of recreational watercraft.

Simon adds: “Today’s busy lifestyle, and the ever increasing demands on

time and finances, prompted us to search for a solution for people who

want to enjoy the beautiful shoreline and islands New Zealand has to

offer, without the expensive outlay and the associated stresses of cleaning,

maintaining, insuring and berthing a boat.”

So, along came ownaship, offering a great alternative, where the

ownership of a boat is shared between more than one owner, each

retaining the obvious financial benefits of indirect ownership.

With a range of options available, from small to large yachts and launches,

ownaship’s walk-on, walk-off management programme also takes care

of all the maintenance, cleaning and yearly running costs. This hassle free

option allows you to really reap all the benefits of being a boat owner,

Call

Celebrated Auckland real estate agent, David Rainbow, knows a thing or two about real estate, which comes as no surprise for a man with a career spanning 27 years. David recently reached the $750 million sales mark, which even he agrees is quite a feat, so Naomi Lindsay spoke with “one of the best in the business”, to find out what’s made him so successful over the years.

Specialising in providing sellers and buyers from Herne Bay to St Heliers

with a “superior, personal and professional service”, David has been

responsible for selling the majority of Auckland’s finest homes over the

years and has been privileged to gain exclusive access to some of the

country’s best properties.

It wasn’t all glitz and glamour and million dollar sales though. David

originally started out in the finance industry, working at Northern Building

Society, but it wasn’t long before his passion for homes took a hold. “As

a family, we have always been involved in property, plus I really love

people, so it seemed to me to be a natural step.” says David.

So it was, that in 1984 David joined national real estate company Beltons

and moved to Bayleys in 1987 and has since been the recipient of virtually

every residential real estate award within the company, namely for

marketing, auction, top residential agent (specialising in Auckland property)

and three times top agent for New Zealand.

David’s passion and dedication for his profession is clearly evident and

for him, the ability to help people achieve their dream is what has kept this

Realtor, David Rainbow shares his property knowledge

industry veteran motivated over the years. David says: “I love seeing the

pleasure people get when buying their dream home or selling their home

to start the next chapter of their lives. I constantly strive to achieve the best

I can and am dedicated to making it work, to ensure everyone is happy.”

Referring to his long standing career in the real estate industry, David

attributes his success to a steady, focussed approach - not only a passion

David Rainbow’s Top Tips in Real Estate:Top tip for buyers: Make sure you always do your own research on a property – buying a house is one of the most important decisions of your life.

Top tip for sellers: Presentation is everything … a lot of buyers can’t visualise well and only see what they see! Listen to your agent and the market.

Top tip for new real estate agents: Be yourself and don’t try and copy someone else. What works for one person, might not work for another. Always be honest.

for what he does, but also his positive, “stick with it until the end” outlook. He is self-motivated and very disciplined.

With over $750 million of sales achieved during his career, is there anything left for this high flyer to achieve? “Absolutely”, says David. “As nice as the awards and recognition are, I do what I do for the enjoyment and self-achievement. The people who enlist my services do so because of my happy, honest nature and how I handle myself in a business sense and as long as they continue to do so, I will be here.”

There’s no doubting David Rainbow is a very successful realtor, but as the saying goes, behind every man there is a great woman and in David’s case there are two at work, plus his wife of 31 years, Leonie (who also had 10 years selling with David). David believes his wonderful success is down to not just a team effort, but “the effort of a team”.

“Selling a home is always filled with emotion, high expectations and the

anticipation of the next chapter of life, and the person right in the middle

of all these hopes and dreams is the real estate agent, and thankfully

you were right there in the thick of things! Communication was of the

highest order, never once did we have to wonder what was going on,

your precise market and buyer feedback gave us confidence in making

the decisions we needed to make, and took a considerable amount of

stress and anxiety out of the process. The real estate profession has a very

healthy future with people such as you leading the charge, and as my wife

says, “it was like having a conversation with a friend who cared”.

In less than a month New Zealand is hosting the most important rugby event in history, so we asked ME stylist, Susana Sarmiento from La’Qua Image, to give us some practical and stylish tips on how to dress for the live rugby games.

When it comes to sporting events it is important for both men and women to be comfortable, stylish, weather proof and versatile, especially if you’re heading out to celebrate an All Blacks win.

Style tips for women:

If it’s likely to be cold, wear a nice merino camisole underneath so you keep warm, without adding bulk. You can’t go wrong with some good skinny jeans, paired with a nice shirt or tunic and a tweed jacket or smart casual coat to wrap it all up. If you’re going to be walking, some stylish sneakers (converse style, not sport shoes), ballet slippers or a pair of flat, funky boots work a treat. If there’s no walking involved, opt for wedged shoes that are a bit more dressy but still comfortable.

To finish the look, your makeup should be natural, not overdone. Pick great accessories, perhaps an attractive fashionable hat, a long pendant with the shirt or tunic and I always wear a statement ring. oops nearly forgot, always take a scarf.

Tip: If you are thinking of kicking up your heels and have your own transport, take a change of shoes and if your game jacket is a bit casual you can have a dressier jacket in the car to freshen up for the celebrations afterwards.

Style tips for men:

A well put together man, who is comfortable in his own skin, is gorgeous. With men, it is about comfort and a stamp of his personality. If you are a man who is very sporty, and usually opts more towards sports gear, then you can step things up a notch by wearing not so washed out jeans and instead of a sports shoe, wear a nice smart sneaker. Having a well-fitted T-shirt, long or short, can be layered with a v-neck sweater, which can be matched with a nice jacket or sports coat and baseball cap if this is your normal attire.

Tip: Most men walk around in ill-fitted clothing. They often wear their tops too big or too wide around the torso or their pants are unflattering. Buy clothes that suit your shape.

Susana’s Tip: Have fun with your wardrobe. It’s about dressing for your unique personality, being comfortable in your own skin and always dressing to enhance your body and shape. I look forward to seeing all of New Zealand out to play during the RWC. Go the All Blacks go!

Construction on the Stadium began in June 2009 and it officially opened earlier this month (5 August) with North otago winning the first professional game at the stadium, beating the West Coast 29-19 in the Heartland Championship held on 7 August.

Built to replace the much-loved Carisbrook Stadium, commonly known as the ‘House of Pain’, the Forsyth Barr Stadium caused some controversy with the local community, mainly due to who was paying for the stadium and whether upgrading Carisbrook was a better option. However, councillors voted overwhelmingly to build the new stadium, a decision David Davies, CEo of Dunedin venues, operators of the stadium, believes was the right one.

Davies said: “The tragic events in Christchurch in September and February were a huge blow to the whole South Island. Without a facility like Forsyth

Architectural Masterpiece in the Deep South

Build

As the world’s only permanently covered stadium to boast a natural turf playing field, the new Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin is attracting worldwide attention. With a total projected cost of around NZ$198.3 million, the real surprise to some people is that this is all happening in a South Island city with a permanent population of only 123,500. ME Editor, Naomi Lindsay, decided to pay Dunedin a visit and see if the Stadium lives up to the hype.

This world-first, architectural icon is fundamental for the economic growth of the South Island as a whole. With the net economic benefit to otago and Dunedin estimated at $24million and the creation of over 1,600 jobs, during construction and afterwards, the Stadium has offered a much needed stimulus to the region.

After the February 22 Christchurch earthquake and the announcement that the AMI Stadium in Christchurch would no longer hold Rugby World Cup 2011 games, Dunedin inherited an extra fixture and now has three England games, plus Ireland vs. Italy, which would have been unlikely had the new Stadium not been available.

The Forsyth Barr Stadium is now the largest indoor event venue in New Zealand and will host an array of events such as rugby union, rugby league and football, surrounded by 30,000 fans in the four tiered stands. Netball and other court sports will also be played using drop-in competition level courts and customised seating layouts. In addition, tradeshows, conferences, large concerts and exhibition sports, such as Monster Truck will also be catered for. Pictured below: The Eden Project, Cornwall England.

Page 35: ME Magazine Issue 2

33

Barr Stadium, I can easily see how the South Island could have slipped off the radar both during the Rugby World Cup and in the future, which would have affected us all terribly. We are in a position now to offer a world first, world class sports and entertainment venue that puts Dunedin and the South Island on the world map for sports, concerts, events and conferences.”

The Stadium’s outstanding feature is the incredible fixed transparent roof, which looks like a large space bubble sculpted over the top of a steel frame. Constructed using 20,558 square metres of ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene), also used at the Allianz Arena in Munich, the Water Cube in Beijing and the Eden Project in England, the roof keeps fans and performers cosy and dry whilst retaining all the atmosphere of an outdoor show. It’s quite miraculous to walk only metres into the middle of the Stadium and suddenly feel the wind drop and the temperature soar.

The transparent ETFE panels (technologically advanced plastic) allow sunlight onto the pitch for natural turf growth whilst providing protection from the elements for spectators and players. The roofing system consists of ETFE sandwiched within an aluminium frame which is inflated with low pressure air to provide stability and resist wind and snow loads.

The Stadium will have a permanent seated capacity of 17,242, which can expand to 30,514, using a combination of standing and re-locatable seating. There will be permanent stands in the South and North ends with re-locatable seating in East and West Stand areas.

Many world-class events are already planned for the Stadium, including four Rugby World Cup Games, the Wellington Phoenix soccer match

against the Brisbane Roar on 20 August and the Elton John concert, the Stadium’s first concert, with an estimated 35,000 fans on 25 November.

Boasting a world-first Stadium is some accolade, but the fact this multi-million dollar architectural masterpiece is positioned in a small town in The Deep South makes it even more special.

Should we trust a Trust?

Ask

The high level use of family trusts in New Zealand has led to increased scrutiny of their purpose and effectiveness. This has led the Law Commission (LC) to seek comment from law practitioners in New Zealand, with a view to changing the rules that apply to trusts. Maurice Maxwell, a Partner in Berry & Co’s Queenstown office, gives a summary of the issues.

There is no official record in New Zealand of the number of trusts in existence, so it’s difficult to know how many there are. The LC makes a cautious estimate of one trust for every 18 people in New Zealand, which is higher than most countries. As a comparison, the LC calculates that in the UK there is one trust for every 294 people. With the proposed abolition of gift duty from 1 october 2011, we may see an increase in the use of trusts, as then the transfer of assets into a trust will be able to be achieved more effectively.

There are concerns by law practitioners, commentators and government agencies over the widespread use of trusts, particularly as it appears that many people do not understand how they work. one concern is that individuals often treat the trust assets (such as property) as their own when that isn’t the case. It is also relevant to note that a victoria University of Wellington Tax Working Group estimated that in 2007, the government missed out on around $300 million of tax revenue, due to the ability of trusts to shelter income.

It is considered by some that there are uses of trusts that may be inappropriate or unfair. For example, the Family Court considers the use of a trust to bypass the equal sharing regime in regard to relationship

property as unfair. As a consequence the LC is looking into the various purposes for which trusts are being established, to decide whether there is a problem with the use of trusts and if so, what should be done about it.

A recent High Court decision also illustrates that the courts are now prepared to look through trusts, to ensure fairness to all parties and show that people cannot necessarily hide behind trusts. In this case, which related to the Bridgecorp matter, the court held that the Legal Services Agency was entitled to treat resources held in a family trust as effectively being the resources of managing director, Mr Rod Petricevic. As a consequence Mr Petricevic was denied legal aid. So it looks like family trusts may not afford the protection that many think they do. The LC has also made the comment that perhaps a number of trusts may be ‘shams’ when put to the test, meaning the trusts might be invalid.

People who use trusts as part of their own personal and business structures, need to give thought to how their entities are set-up, managed and utilised. The LC may also look into whether changes to trust law are needed to address any adverse impacts of the removal of gift duty, and to make trust law more robust and indeed more fair in general. It may be that new, stronger trust legislation is just around the corner.

Berry & Co is a long established and respected law firm providing a range of legal services for business and personal clients.

Long-standing boutique stationery store, Red Letter Day, is already well known to the Aucklanders who have frequented the beautiful Matakana Village complex, just outside Warkworth. After years of searching for the right premise for their second store, owners Lindy and Graham MacDonald finally found the ideal location. Naomi Lindsay joined them for their big opening.

Specialising in exquisite stationery, writing equipment, accessories and gifts,

Red Letter Day not only stocks pens for everyday use but is the exclusive

New Zealand stockist of luxury global brands such as oMAS, Krone, vera

Wang and El Casco. The Matakana village store opened 4 years ago

and, according to Lindy and Graham, Red Letter Day helps “inspire feelings

of nostalgia and artisan culture in those who love writing”.

Lindy also believes that in today’s technology driven society, they help

people reacquaint themselves with the timeless art of writing. With such

stunning products on display, it’s easy to see why one would ditch the

free bank biro in favour of something more stylish. I truly stepped back in

time whilst browsing through the array of beautiful pens, notecards, desk

accessories and other associated wares. As a lover of the written word,

it certainly inspired me to pick up a pen and notecard and write a letter;

Prepare to be swept away at Luxury Fishing Lodge River Birches in Turangi

Chris Sharland and his partner Katie decided to get away from the city for a romantic weekend away, with some great trout fishing thrown in for good measure.

Pulling up to Turangi’s River Birches Lodge to hear the famed Tongariro

River rolling just metres away offers the first indication that you have

arrived at a true New Zealand hideaway. Nestled amongst towering

beech, a large sequioa and silver birch trees, the low-slung cedar lodge

gives an instant feeling of tranquillity and, as we stepped inside, the well-

heated entrance and equally warm smile of manager, Anthea Tidswell,

offered cosy respite from the crisp Central Plateau air.

River Birches was recently awarded first place in a prestigious New

Zealand Architectural Competition and, looking around, it’s easy to see

why. With its elegant design - think exposed cedar beams, plush furnishings

and French doors that open out to a charming country garden - the

lodge is welcoming and luxurious. As well as the main lodge (which can

accommodate up to six guests) River Birches also includes a separate three

bedroom cottage; perfect for families, small groups and those seeking the

ultimate in privacy. The three rooms of the main River Birches Lodge are

all named after famous fishing pools on the Tongariro River and all have

very interesting stories which are steeped in local history. The Duchess

Pool is aptly named as it was fished by the late Queen Mother herself in

the 1920’s and the Major Jones Pool, after a cantankerous Major Rhys

Wykeham Jones; described as “a fine sight on parade, monocle and all.”

For our stay we were to enjoy the incredibly comfortable Admiral room.

Appointed with a King Size bed, Sky Tv and DvD, huge bathroom and

private cedar hot tub, it would have been infinitely easy to bunker down

here should the weather turn nasty - cabin fever was never so good.

The Admiral room was particularly appealing to me, as The vice-Admiral

Harold Hickling (after whom it was named) wrote one of my favourite

fishing books. Published in 1960, Freshwater Admiral is a summation of

10 years spent on the Tongariro River and many of the chapters still hold

relevance today. Hickling’s ethos of conservation and the fickle nature of

trout remain particularly pertinent – something I was reminded of that very

afternoon as I hit the Tongariro with River Birches’ fishing guide, Bryce

Curle.

Page 39: ME Magazine Issue 2

Prepare to be swept away at Luxury Fishing Lodge River Birches in Turangi

over the last decade there has been a change in the way the Tongariro winter spawning runs have occurred, essentially shifting the prime fishing part of the season further into the year from what used to be, a June / July peak to August / September, sometimes even later. one thing that hasn’t changed is that there are still plenty of anglers willing to fish in July regardless of trends, which we discovered that afternoon. Anglers were everywhere. Given we had only two hours on a very busy river, I felt we were lucky to encounter one good hook up thanks to Bryce’s great guiding skills, only for the fish to be lost thanks to my poor angling skills. The great thing about the location of the River Birches lodge is not only the extremely close proximity to a world famous year-round fishery but also the short distances to tens of back-country rivers that Bryce knows like the back of his hand. one quick helicopter trip and you’re in big wild trout heaven with a guide equipped with all the local knowledge you’ll need.

If fishing isn’t your thing, or you’re simply all fished out, the amount of other activities in the region are staggering. Close to home, is a network of bush walks that follow the river through native forests. varying levels of intensity and length are available, so if it’s a morning wake up walk or a full day river exploration, you’re well catered for.

Returning to the lodge post fishing, there are a host of options to finish your day. Choose between a soak in your private hot tub, a nice red wine in front of the fire or a quick trip to visit some of the local wineries. Personally I’d opt for the massage that is on offer before freshening up and joining the other guests in the lounge to swap war stories from the river and relaxing before your first class three course meal. Almost as a prelude to

the Rugby World Cup we were lucky enough to settle down to one of the best All Black performances of this year in a complete dismantling of the Springboks. The shape of things to come hopefully.

Perfect for a weekend fishing trip or a romantic getaway, River Birches Lodge is ideally positioned for you to explore an array of activities and attractions, yet you could quite easily do nothing but relax and unwind in the beautiful surroundings.

Escape to the tranquility of River Birches, enjoy two nights of pampering, including full breakfast and dinner for two on one evening. From $890, call 07 386 0445 to book.

Editor’s tip: In the summer, kids and adults alike can borrow small fishing rods from Customhouse and fish off the wharf outside the restaurant If you’re lucky to catch one of the many fish in the harbour, the Customhouse chef will cook it any way you like.

Positioned on the Customhouse Quay in the heart of Dunedin, the Customhouse restaurant offers relaxed, contemporary dining in a superb heritage building.

It was a slightly cold winters evening outside, yet the atmosphere inside

was warm and inviting, with upbeat background music creating a relaxed

environment. We really liked the modern, art-deco interior and the

charming nature of the historic building.

We were greeted by the friendly staff, who were knowledgeable,

relaxed and attentive to all our needs throughout the evening.

our group decided to start with a cleansing beer, before ordering from

the locally-sourced menu, which, as you would expect from a seafront

establishment, has an ocean feel, whilst providing plenty of other options

for non-seafood lovers. our group decided on the garlic chilli prawns on

a spiced bed of orange and cress, the house chicken paté and the beer

battered oysters for starters.

For our mains, we all opted for the daily specials; the surf and turf for

one of us and two of us couldn’t resist the spicy chicken breast, served

with roast capsicum. The meals were promptly served and we were all

impressed by the portion size, which was perfectly balanced with the

quality of the food. The spiced chicken for me was a stand-out dish, with

a nice kick.

UNION: The Heart of Rugby is a part coffee table, part-biography book

featuring some of the world’s greatest rugby moments in words and pictures.

Launched to coincide with the photographic exhibition of the same name and

the Rugby World Cup, this is an epic heart and soul portrait of rugby through

the lenses of the world’s finest sports photographers. It is also a great dinner

party conversation book, as each image tells a story and evokes people

to tell their “where were you then” anecdotes. In a large, glossy format, the

book can be displayed on your coffee table and be picked up at any time

to dip in and dip out of the different tales. The book is a result of a major

international search to find 150 original and evocative images from the

world’s best rugby photographers. Complementing the images are original

interviews with five of the game’s greatest players from the world’s leading

rugby nations. The exhibition of the same name opens in September 2011 at

Auckland’s iconic Town Hall. If the images in the book are anything to go by,

this will be a must see exhibition.

Sean Fitzpatrick is undoubtedly one of this country’s best hookers and I

have the utmost respect for him. I have read his autobiography, so when I

got the chance to read his new book I was interested to see what else he

had to say. Winning Matters is a fascinating insight into the mind of this

legend. Written in a candid, conversational tone, Fitzpatrick reflects on the

key moments of his life, identifying the everyday values, beliefs and principles

that have driven him, on and off the pitch. As captain of the All Blacks, he

was known for his inspirational leadership skills and he details why he thinks

the All Blacks were at the top of their game during that time. In his long and

illustrious career, Fitzy set the benchmark for excellence and this book, which

is an autobiography, self-help and business how-to guide rolled into one,

outlines his strategy for “being the best you can”. An easy and informative

read and a great insight into this legendary All Black, I can only hope the

current All Blacks team and management have also picked up a copy.
