WhAT DO yOu eNjOy AbOuT COMpeTiNg iN pAgeANTs?

Though I started competing in high school, it wasnt really my thing, but I still tried because people wanted me to do it. My first time was when I was a junior in high school for a school con-test. I was the second runner-up. So the next year, I represented se-niors and I ended up getting first place. Then, I stopped competing when I reached college because I wanted to focus on my studies. But that didnt happen, so I was able to represent my village as Miss Barangay and I won. I found myself with an even larger

responsibility, representing the city as Miss San Fernando, my hometown. Competing in a pag-eant is very challenging; it gives me a sense of accomplishment. The goal of every contestant is to win, but Im already satisfied when I get the chance to face the crowd. Ive always been very shy. Answering the questions in front of people especially the panel of judges is not exactly the most comfortable situation to be in. So, Im happy because I over-came my fear and I was rewarded by being told Im beautiful and that I did a great job on the stage. Most importantly, I enjoyed

working with my competitors. In the end, we became friends, not enemies.

WhAT DO yOu like AbOuT liViNg ON guAM?

I like living on Guam as much as I do in the Philippines because this place reminds me of my hometown. Guam makes me feel closer to home. I see lot of Filipino people around the island, which is very nice because I did not have to make a big adjustment to cope with the new environment. I especially love the food. Thats my biggest thing I need to make sure that my

tummy is being fed Filipino food because Im not me when Im hungry. Chamorros are welcom-ing people who will treat you almost like family. In addition, I love Guam because this place is full of memories between me and my husband.

When Jacqueline Young says, I like fat white guys, she shatters the image of a delicate Filipina in waiting. She is referring to her husband of one year and one month. I dont care if hes fat. I like it, she says flatly with a mischievous smile creeping up seconds later. The fat husband is Matt Young who seems unphased by Jackies wry assessment of his figure. She ignored me for a few weeks, he says. So what did it for her? Im handsome. Okay, 50/50, she replies, bursting into a giggle. In conversation, Jackie is the antithesis of how she describes herself. Im a shy type person. I dont talk too much. I just wait for some-one to talk to me. Her husband readily offers that he loved the idea of picking up MDM, his favorite local publication, and seeing his wife on the cover. So, here she is, new to Guam, but not to modeling. The husband and wife banter is entertaining as Jackie gets gussied up by makeup artist Erma Riley at Oceans. Two hours later, decked in sequins and beads, she looks like the haute couture version of a pageant winner. In fact, she has competed in five beauty contests.

hOW WOulD yOu DesCribe yOur persONAliTy?

I am just a simple girl with simple hopes and dreams. I am just myself loving, fragile human. I take a balanced approach in life. Im definitely not afraid to act out on my desires even crazy ones. Ive been able to live a life of pleasure without living a life of excess. I am a lively and outgoing person. Im naturally friendly and unique. Sometimes my emotions get out of control, but Im usually a pretty stable person. I can find a lot to be happy about, as long as things are going my way. Love is a priority for me, and I can go fur-ther than most people to hold on to someone I love. I tend to find it difficult though, to trust others until I have had enough time to get to know them better. Im very comfortable with who I am, and if someone doesnt like me thats not my problem. No matter what, I love myself the most!

Where DO yOu see yOurself iN fiVe yeArs?

When I was a little kid, I saw myself being an interior designer. I used to love changing the arrange-ment of our house and decorating it. When I got older, I saw myself being a nurse because my mom motivated me to be like her and follow in her footsteps. She loves taking care of people who are in need. So, I studied nursing and graduated with a degree. Years from now, I see myself being a reg-istered nurse. If I pass the nursing exam, Im taking up psychiatric nursing or obstetrics nursing. Im more into those specialties than general nursing. I like to be chal-lenged.

    SPORTS

RIDING AIR ExpEriEncE thE rush of kitEboarding

WhAT DOes iT feel like? At first it is difficult to get the timing and multitasking down right. You have to control the kite while riding the board at the same time, and it takes time to learn how to do this. Once you get up and riding though it is exhilarating to glide smoothly above the reef. You can see coral and fish at times, but just being out on the water speeding along is a rush. It is kind of like wake-boarding, except you are both

riding the board and driving the boat and, of course, there is no engine noise. As you progress, you can learn how to jump. It is an awesome feeling to float above the water with no sound but the wind rushing through your hair.

hOW DOes sOMeONe geT sTArTeD?The first step toward learning to kiteboard is to get comfortable using a trainer kite on land. This is basically a smaller kite that is controlled in the same way as the

larger kites. After learning some basic theory and practicing on land you will then be ready to progress to a bigger kite in the water. You may be able to use some gear from an instructor initially, but youll want to get your own gear before long. hOW gOOD Of shApe DOes A persON NeeD TO be iN?From watching kiteboarding it looks like you would have to be in really good shape. However, it is not as hard physically as it

looks. There are guys in their 60s still riding and plenty of out-of-shape riders are able to learn. It certainly helps to be in decent shape and comfortable in the water since you will be walking a lot while learning and there will be some muscle exertion. Expect to be sore after the first several sessions, but if you keep going youll get in better shape and gain more stamina as well.

Adventurous sport lovers are taking kite flying to the next level by using bigger kites to harness wind power for an exhilarating ride over and through the waves of Guam. Folks glide over the water at high speeds and can even fly through the air twisting and turning their body to per-form gravity defying tricks. Kiteboarding or kitesurfing is the coolest new sport to hit the beaches since surfing became popular in the 1950s. It is described as a combination of surfing, windsurfing, and wakeboarding. This fun beach activity will get you off the sand and into some adrenaline pumping fun. As a beginner, it takes some time to learn the correct maneuvers, but once you do, all that hard work is worth it. If you already know how to surf, skateboard, or wakeboard then kitesurfing will come easier to you than someone without any board sport experience. Guam started to see kitesurfers surge around 2003-2004. The community has since grown even more. While limited gear is available at local surf shops, you can order everything you need online and even find some used on the local craigslist. Thankfully, there are some kiteboarding experts willing to give lessons here on Guam. The sport is poised to grow even more as Guams population increases and folks are looking for more exciting ways to enjoy Guams abundance of wind and water. We talked to Andrew Porter who is an experienced kiteboarder and the owner of the only website devoted to kiteboarding on Guam, www.kiteboardingguam.com. Here you will find the basics on where to go on island for the sport and how to get started. Porter says the best way to start is by practicing on land with a trainer kite to learn how to control the kite. The most popular place for this ac-tivity is Asan Park since it has nice grass and plenty of wide open space. Kiteboarding can be extremely dangerous if you dont know what your are doing so it is important to start out by taking lessons from an experienced instructor, says Porter. He also adds the best way to learn and get better at the sport is to just get to the beaches on days with good wind and make friends, and this can also help when looking for starter equipment.

  • WhAT is The priCe Of equipMeNT? CAN yOu reNT iT ANyWhere?Starter equipment packages start at around $1,500 online including kite, board, harness and control bar and go up from there. In order to go kiteboard-ing in different wind conditions most riders have at least 2-3 kites and two boards. Equipment costs can vary quite a bit depending on kite size and quality. You may be able to find secondhand equip-ment locally; just ask around at the beach. I am not aware of any place to rent equipment on island at this time, but there are a few places on island where you can purchase new gear.

Are There lessONs OffereD?Yes, lessons are offered by some of the local kiteboarders. To set something up please visit www.kiteboardingguam.com and use the contact form.

giVe Me A breAkDOWN Of sTeps WheN prepAriNg TO kiTebOArD?Once you have had some time with a trainer kite and then taken lessons here are the basic steps. First, you watch the weather to see what the wind is doing and check forecasts before heading to the beach. The wind direc-tion helps decide where to go kiteboarding since you want the wind to be coming off the ocean towards land. That way

the wind will be more steady and if anything goes wrong you will get blown towards shore instead of out to sea. Once you arrive at your chosen spot, you then check the wind at the beach and watch the weather for a few minutes. Depending on the wind speed you select a kite size, lay it out on the ground and then use a pump to inflate the bladders which help the kite to keep its shape while launching and flying.

After the kite is inflated you connect your lines and control bar, put on your harness and other water gear (sunglasses, rash guard, etc.) and then ask a buddy to help launch the kite. Once the kite is in the air and and everything looks good you can grab your board and start riding. When you are ready to come in it is best to have a buddy help catch the kite and then you put everything away again.

It seems to be going around! Lots of new babies, and plenty of proud mommas and daddies showin off their new alarm clocks er, bundles of joy. But as I learned, getting back that pre-baby body is not as easy as the Hollywood stars make it seem. However, I did it! And you can too! Here are some tips to bringing sexy back, after the baby!

    20 / AUGUST 2011

  • FORTHE MOMMAS FORTHE DADDIES

Yes, you too. Many new dads put on a few sympathy pounds when a baby enters the picture. First, dont freak out about it. Its totally normal to pick up 5-10 pounds. The stress, sleep de-privation, the changes to your partners eating habits (strange though they may be) will throw your system off as well. Now would be an excellent time for you to sharpen those kitchen skills. Your partner will be beyond tired, and you still score big time points if you can cook a few nutritious meals per week. Without even saying it, bring back those lean meats and plenty of veggies. Trust me, it will be worth the effort. Once the baby is old enough, start taking junior out for walks. One of the neat things about babies is that they gain weight, so the challenge will always be there. Invest in one of those handy baby carriers (my husband calls it a parachute pack). Many designers have introduced more manly versions of these, and babies usually love them. Strollers work too. While the baby is a newborn, I would avoid the jogging stroll-ers, as the baby will lack the head control to be safe. But there are many options for strollers available, just practice opening and closing them before you leave the house! Taking a nice walk will get you out of the house, give your partner a break, give you some magic bonding time with your baby and get you some exercise all in one 20-minute excursion. Shedding those extra baby pounds is easier for some than others, but it is important to everyones overall health and self-image. And it introduces a healthy lifestyle to the newest member of your family while they are at their most impres-sionable. Congratulations to all those new moms and dads!

Right after bringing baby home, dieting and exercise are going to be pretty much impossible. Between the sleepless nights, and people bringing you food, control of your eating and exercise, along with the rest of your life, will seem to lie with that little bundle of joy the doctor sent you home with. And for the first month or so, it is probably wise not to worry too much about your weight or appearance. Nature will need to take care of your body before you can take over. And nature does a pretty good job! Nursing, for example, is great for helping to shed the extra baby pounds. After that follow up visit with the doctor (which, for most women happens around six weeks post natal) there are many options you can take. For my clients and myself I found that getting back into a healthy routine is the first step. It will probably be a different routine than you had pre-baby, but figure out a way to eat three balanced meals a day, get no less than eight hours of sleep each night (stop laughing!) and 20 minutes of exercise three times per week. It may take some time to figure out how to work that in, especially if there are other children, a job and/or a husband also vying for your attention. Mastering this step is critical to future success. Regaining control of your healthy habits is key to weight loss and overall health management. Once you get a grip on the basics again, re-introducing exercise, eating for weight loss, and the other things we know need to be done will be less difficult.

Taking a nice walk will get you out of the house, give your partner a break, give you some magic bonding time with your baby and get you some exercise all in one 20-minute excursion.

Theres no second chance to make a first impression and scent is a huge factor. (Check out Matt Damon seducing Ellen Barkin in Oceans 13 for comic proof.) While the attractive pow-ers of pheromones (scented sex hormones) have often been exaggerated, especially by advertisers, a crisp cologne may lead to a second glance. Theres no substitute for a pleasant personality, however, wearing a well-liked fragrance may have a cheering effect on the wearer. According to The Smell Report by Kate Fox, the daily use of pleasant-smelling colognes significantly improves the mood reduc-ing mood disturbances such as tension, depression, anger, fatigue and confusion. Fox sug-gests that this personal sense of well-being, good humor and confidence is inevitably reflected in behavior. This cheering effect may be of help in attracting the opposite sex, making scent an important part of the total package.

Colognes generally fall into three groups: citrus, green and spicy. Citrus, which includes scents like lemon and tangerine, elicits a fresh-from-the-shower aroma. People naturally seek citrus fragrances in warm weather for a burst of freshness. Fragrances that qualify as green are natural and sweeter and are usually married with fruity and floral notes. Spicy colognes start out with notes of laven-der, thyme, and jasmine and sometimes have a heady oriental vibe. Masculine fragrances often contain notes of leather, wood, tobacco, or patchouli. The best way to choose a scent is to bring home a few card samples, being careful not to mix them. If you still love the scent a few days later, then make the purchase that may lead to your next big date.

    SUBARU 5-DOOR IMPREZAauTO

By Jennifer Naylor Gesick Photos by Rich Ocampo

Darrell and Josefa Cabrera are a couple in love who share the same passion for Subaru automobiles. Even though there is a third member of the relationship, Ms. Subie, jealousy is never an issue. Date nights are not the traditional dinner and movie, but instead a romantic evening for the Cabreras involves working on their 2007 Subaru Impreza (which, you guessed it, they lovingly refer to as Ms. Subie.) Josefa Cabrera loves the high speed thrill of racing Ms. Subie. Josefa rides along enjoying the wind blowing through her hair and the heart-pumping action of autocross events with her husband speeding through orange cones in order to beat the times of other drivers. They love their Subaru so much it inspired Darrell to become the Subaru Club of Guam president. The clubs mission is to promote safe driving skills acquired through autocross while serving the commu-nity through various charities and services. The Subaru Club of Guam sponsors many autocross events which is a motorsport that focuses

on safe competition and active participation. In autocross, also known as solo racing, drivers navigate one at a time through a temporary course marked by traffic cones trying to beat the best time. Josefa said she believes the competitions help improve peoples driving skills not only for the race, but also in everyday driving situations. The Cabreras and other members of the Subaru Club believe that social responsi-bility plus safe driving practices will provide fellow islanders with an improved quality of life while also making Guams roads safer for their families and children. The Subaru 5 door Impreza is a fun to drive car with a 2.5 liter Subaru BOXER 4 cylinder engine with a horizontal layout that com-bines balance, power and efficiency. Coupled with the all wheel drive, this makes the Impreza perfect for having a blast and handling Guams often slippery roads. The 2011 Impreza starts at $17,495 MSRP.

    CHALAN SESAME OIL

Hafa Adai and whats up to my peepsquad! It is already August, dang! That went by fast, huh? Well, hopefully your wheels are still spinning with enough juice to get through the rest of 2011 with ease. So, I was at home last week and I was thinking about how much I look like Jacob from Twilight. I was thinking about it to the point that it led me to another thought: the only difference between me and him is that he is on TV every now and then. In turn, that led to another thought: what kind of TV show could I be on so that people would not be able to tell the difference between Jacob and me at all? it is with that in mind that i present to you, The planet kyle real life guide to local Television shows i would like to be in!

    PLaNETKyLE

    GUAHAN-FLAVORED TVBy Kyle Mandapat

Heres my first idea and obviously its for the children. Okay, so there are already shows that teach our kids life lessons and all that stuff, but there arent any shows that teach them the Guam life lessons that will either make them or break them. These are the things that Big Bird and Elmo the furry red monster cant teach them, but Big Chicken and Felymo the furry, sunburned Pinoy (played by me) can. Some of the big episodes of this show will teach your kids how to cook rice and measure the water with their fingers; how to properly husk a coco-nut; and most important, how to get the most slices out of a can of Spam! With this locally produced show, Chalan Sesame Oil, our futures future will only continue to get brighter.

Well, I will be talking to some big league TV producers on Guam within the next couple of days, or at least friend requesting them on Face-book, to pitch these ideas. Hopefully, you will hear more about it soon and see big chickens, chicken kadu, sing-ing former governors and me on what the British call, The Tele very soon! Wish me luck friends and remember to stay tuned to the Morn-ing Blender with Kai and I on Power 98 for updates! Until next month, be safe, have fun and Shooooooooots!

    Guam Local Television Shows

In this show, I will serve only as the host. Imagine this: the top 12 cockfighters on Guam all move into a house together. They are broken down into two teams. They go head to head every week just like on the real-ity show with the losing cock being sent packing. As it gets down to the wire, the teams will thin out with the best of the best remaining in the end. The cool thing is that the fighters wont be able to use their regular chickens. They will have to use run-of-the-mill chickens because if we use the expensive breed nobodys going to want to eat them afterward, and that wouldnt be cool.

Finally, following the success of the awesome Fox6 show, Glee, we will follow the life of Guam teens who like to sing. We will follow them as they bring music into all aspects of their lives. They will sing at school. They will sing on the bus. They will sing as they bush cut and as they walk their pit bulls. Imagine the craziness! The coolest part would be the ability to have guest stars on the show. Can you picture the freakout everyone would have when former Gov. Joseph Ada busted out during an episode and started singing his rendition of Robert Os (Sonny Bono is Walking) My One and Only?!

    THE ULTIMATE COCKFIGHTER SI GLEE
