Advantage of Tagging Disadvantage of Tagging
+Analysis
Metadata enables the management of diversified contents on the web. One form of this is tagging.
Google uses an algorithm to bring up the relevant information, “Google is able to extract useful information from the third key source of user-generated metadata in the present environment” (Bruns, 2008, p.174)
Metadata
+Analysis
Tagging has become very popular because its systems have the potential to improve search, spam
detection, reputation systems, and personal organization. All doing this while introducing new modalities of social
communication and opportunities for data mining.” (Marlow, 2006).
Tag has brought convenience to people. Tag clouds and folksonomies automatically help create
communities as users with similar interests gravitate toward similar, searchable word tags.
Tagged content increases the amount of usable retrievals by providing more than one place you can look for information on the same topic (Doug Johnson, 2007).
Metadata using tagging
+Questions
Is it necessary to educate people how to tag in an appropriate way. If it is, how?
Can we get reliable information with considering that ideas come from various people?
If tagging is considered to be a way to manage knowledge, what role does the user take on? A describer or organizer?
If this is the popular trend or emerging way of classifying knowledge (if not the future), should there be a guideline for effective tagging?
