Page 4: MDI PART TIME MBA

The board members of MDI include eminent personalities from both industry as well as academia. The board meets every quarter. MDI follows an organizational chart that has four layers. MDI is headed by its Director, followed by five Deans-Dean (Graduate Programmes), Dean (Executive Graduate Programmes), Dean (Research), Dean (Continuing Education and Consultancy), Dean (Placement & Corporate Affairs). This is followed by Chairpersons of institutional activities, management areas and academic staff. General administration is headed by the Registrar and Secretary. All academic activities are faculty driven. The faculty body decides on the curriculum content, delivery, duration etc. of each programme. The Education Programme bouquet comprises of two-year full-time PGPM, PGP-HR and PGP-IM, 15 month Post Graduate Diploma in Management (NMP), three year part time Post Graduate Management Programme, PG Diploma in Energy Management and PG Diploma in Public Policy and Management and Doctoral level FPM and Executive FPM.The PGPM at MDI is 15 years old. The programme is ranked among the very best in the country and therefore, is one of the most sought

This has been achieved over the years by a combination of three important elements - a very rigorous admission process, followed by academic rigor and finally, excellent placements. The admission process involves two stages. In the first stage, students are short listed on the basis of CAT score and called for GD and personal interviews. For the PGP-HR programme the admission process is as rigorous as the PGPM programme. The students are selected based on appropriate tests and subsequent simulation exercises or GD and PIs.Academic rigor is reflected in the programme structure and delivery. The two year programme provides rigorous academic input combined with constant industry interactions. As a result, the final placements of the students have been very encouraging. Why Study at MDI ?

Page 6: MDI PART TIME MBA

duRationThe three-year (nine-term long) Part-Time Post Graduate Programme in Management (Part-time PGPM) is at par with the regular PGPM programme in its coverage and rigour. Each year is divided into three terms. Each term is of 12-week duration including two weeks for examination (mid-term & end-term). For providing flexibility to the students, they are permitted to drop term(s) in between, but they should complete all the remaining terms / courses / dissertation work within maximum permissible limit of five years. In these cases the total fees amount applicable to the batch with which they are joining the term, will be charged from them also. Re-registration fee is also to be paid in these cases.

couRse WoRkThe programme consists of 36 courses of thirty contact hours each, out of which eighteen are core courses and eighteen are elective courses. Core courses are compulsory for all participants. Students are expected to complete 18 elective courses. The students are free to take the elective courses of their choice. The elective courses are offered in the following functional areas: Finance, Operations Management, Marketing, Information Management, HRM and Strategy. The schema of course work is like this: in first year (initial three terms) 12 core courses will be taught, having four core courses in each term, in second year (fourth to sixth term), there will be four core courses in fourth term and two core courses in fifth term. Electives will start from fifth term onwards. In third year (seventh to ninth term) only elective courses will run. In the last ninth term dissertation / project work will be taken by students.

sPecializationFor specialization in a functional area, minimum five electives must be chosen by students in that area. Dual specialization is permitted; in which case additional minimum

five electives must be chosen in the second area of specialization. Thus out of 18 elective courses 10 must be from the two areas in which students wish to specialize. Remaining elective courses can be taken from any functional area or from the pool of stand-alone electives which may or may not have inter-linkages with other courses. If a student has not taken 5 or more elective courses in any functional area, he will be considered to have specialized in general management. The elective courses offered in a term will be announced in the previous term to facilitate pre registration of courses.

disseRtation / PRoject WoRkIn addition to core and elective courses, each student will undergo a concurrently running, action research assignment, equivalent to two credit courses. In this dissertation he/she will tackle a clearly defined live problem of an organization. Normally this dissertation/project work requires one-term equivalent effort and can be started in ninth term. A faculty member from MDI will provide guidance for the project. Students have to choose one guide from industry also for this project work. The students will submit their written dissertation report and will defend their work in front of panel of examiners. The dissertation is evaluated and the grade obtained is included in the final CGPA.

class scheduleIn the first year (initial three terms) classes are held for 3 days a week. These three days are Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday for April batch and Wednesday, Friday, Sunday for October Batch. Second year (fourth term) onward classes are held throughout the week depending on the electives offered and chosen. Classes are held in evening from 6:30 PM to 9:45 PM on weekdays, having two sessions of 90 minutes each and from 10:00 AM to 8:45 PM on Sundays, having 6 sessions of 90 minutes duration.

diPlomaThe Institute awards the Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (Part-Time) to all successful candidates. This Diploma of Part-Time Post Graduate Programme in Management (Part-time PGPM) is recognized and accredited by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India.

PedagogyPedagogy would have a balanced mix of lectures, group discussion, presentations, case analyses, simulation exercises, business games, field visits and project work.
