Using mComet
The mComet handset application used with the Comet Tracker workstation application allows workers in the field to communicate efficiently with the home office. Use mComet to clock in and out of work shifts, enter information about jobs, and receive updated forms while in the field.
mComet uses built-in GPS tracking function to gather location information at specified time intervals and transmit the resulting data to the hosted server.
Purpose and Audience
This document is intended for users and administrators of the mComet cellular application. It provides the following information:
• Installation and setup • Modifying worker time statuses • Working with various forms and orders • Working with maps and getting directions
Detailed information on the Comet Tracker software is not provided in this document.
Application Requirements
• Web browser installed on the BlackBerry device • Operating system of 6.X.X.X or higher • BlackBerry Desktop Software (for desktop installation) • USB cable (for desktop installation) • Unlimited or similar data service plan • Management application (either of the following):

Installing mComet
Install the application on your handset before using mComet.
If you are installing an upgrade to an existing version of mComet, you must first uninstall the existing version. Contact Actsoft Technical Support for assistance with all uninstalls.
There are two ways to install mComet:
• from the desktop • via the Web
Desktop Installation
Download the mComet for BlackBerry® application installation files.
1. Connect the handset, via USB cable, to the PC where the mComet files are located.
2. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and double-click Application Loader.
3. When the Application Loader window displays, click Start in the Add/Remove Applications section.
4. Click Browse in the Device application selection window.

5. Navigate to the location of the mComet for BlackBerry® application files.
Contact Actsoft Technical Support for the correct mComet barcoda.alx and .cod files.
6. Individually select and open each of the following .alx files:
• mComet.alx • ExpeDataMobileImageGenerator.alx • BaracodaBT.alx

7. The mComet files are added to the Device application selection window, and are selected by default.
8. Click Next, and a summary of the pending installs will display.
A dialog message confirms that ‘The loading operation was successful.’

9. Click Main Menu to return to the main menu. If you have finished with the Desktop Manager, close the application.
To complete the application installation, follow the instructions in the Setting Application Options section.

Web Installation
If you are installing an upgrade to an existing version of mComet, you must first uninstall the existing version. Contact Actsoft Technical Support for assistance with all uninstalls.
1. From the handset main menu, select the Internet Browser icon .
2. On the browser screen, enter the URL for the mComet application, and choose OK: www.actsoft.com/OTA/mcomet
3. Select Download.
4. When the download is complete, a dialog message confirms that ‘The application has been successfully installed’. Choose OK.
5. Set the permissions for the mComet application:

6. Ensure that the correct permissions are set, press the Menu key, and choose Save.
7. Read the End User License Agreement (EULA), press the Menu key and choose Accept.

8. Choose Yes to allow the wireless data usage charges.
mComet will attempt to log you on automatically with the PTN (personal telephone number) set up in Comet Tracker. If your handset’s identifying data have not been set up in Comet Tracker, the Setup screen will display for you to enter your credentials.
9. To complete the application installation, follow the instructions in the Setting Application Options section.

Network Data Selection for the GSM BlackBerry
After initial installation of mComet, the mComet Internet Setup Wizard screen displays. On this screen, you can specify the Network Data transport to be used for submitting GPS/phone data to the Comet Tracker desktop application.
The network option test runs automatically on new installations. However, if the device is not sending data to Comet Tracker, run the test again by selecting Network Options from the Setup screen.
1. On the mComet Network Wizard screen, select the transports to test.
On the mComet Network Report screen, a green checkmark after a protocol means that a valid data connection is available.
2. Select a protocol from the connections listing.
3. A confirmation dialog message will display to confirm your selection. Select Yes or No. Selecting ‘No’ will return you to the mComet Network Report screen to reselect.
If you need to access the protocol selection options after initial installation, go to Setup > Network Options.

Setting Application Options
After you have installed mComet, set the following options:

Icon Location Option
Some handset models may send mComet directly to the Downloads folder after installation. If you do not see the mComet icon on the home screen, follow these steps to move the icon to the home screen for convenience.
1. Navigate to the Downloads folder, and press the Menu key. Choose Move To Folder.
2. Choose Home from the listing.
3. Press the Menu key again and choose Switch Application.
Now you can choose the mComet icon from the main menu listing.

GPS Options
1. Select the Options icon from the handset’s main menu.
2. On the Options screen, select Advanced Options.
3. On the Advanced Options screen, display the submenu and choose GPS.
For CDMA devices, open the GPS Services menu.
4. Ensure that GPS Services is set to ‘Location ON’.

Wi-Fi Connections
Depending on the Blackberry Smartphone model you have, you may or may not have Wi-Fi access. If you have a Wi-Fi-enabled Smartphone, follow the instructions below to configure the Wi-Fi settings.
1. Select the Manage Connections icon from the handset’s main menu,.
2. When the Connections dialog displays, ensure that Wi-Fi is set to On.
3. The Wi-Fi icon at the top right of the screen indicates that the wireless radio is now set to
the On position.
Uninstalling mComet
You must uninstall mComet before installing a new version of the application. Contact Actsoft Technical Support at 813-936-1511 for assistance with all uninstalls procedures.

Handset Navigation
mComet uses the navigation tools available on your handset to move through screens and menus. In this document, handset keys and screen captures are represented using the BlackBerry Tour 9630, shown here. If you are using a different handset model, keys, screens and menus may be slightly different.

ALT key To perform function shortcuts, press the ALT key along with alpha or numeric keys.
Backspace/Delete key
To backspace to delete a character, press the Backspace/Delete key. Additionally, on the Tracking Status and Order Information screens, press the Backspace/Delete key to view the first page of information.

End/Power key To end a call or to power the handset on or off, press the End/Power key. Additionally, you can press the End/Power key to return to the home menu when you are not on a call.
Enter key To select an item onscreen, press the Enter key.
Escape key To return to the previous screen, press the Escape key.
Left Convenience key To activate Panic mode, press the Left Convenience key for 5 seconds. To deactivate Panic mode, press the Left Convenience key again for 5 seconds.
Menu key To access submenus within mComet, press the Menu key. Or, press it to
access the BlackBerry handset menu.
Send key To make a phone call, type the numbers and press the Send key.
Space key To insert spaces between letters or words, use the Space key. Additionally, on the Tracking Status and Order Information screens, you can press the Space key to view the last page of information.
Symbol key To insert symbols within data that you type, press the Symbol key.
Trackball To move the cursor, roll the Trackball. To perform an action or confirm a selection, press the Trackball to select the desired onscreen option.

G Monitor the locations of assets, such as handsets.
Manager Map
A Supervisors can view their location and the locations of all tracking users.
Directions
D Access directions to any location.
My Location
Y View your location on the map.
Worker Status
W Update worker, job or form resources.
Forms F Add forms, (tasks) for any type of job function, such as a service call, delivery, etc.
Landmarks L Add a landmark for a location.
Orders
O
View and update order information. The number of unread orders displays on the icon.

Submenus change depending on where you are in the application. For example, when you are on a Forms screen, you can display the submenu to select Save or Cancel. Or, on the Child Fields screen, you can display the submenu to select options for working with child records. Additionally, depending on the type of Smartphone you have, displaying the submenu may involve pressing the trackball, trackwheel, tracking square, or the Menu key.
Required Fields and Lists
Lists allow you to select specific values for fields. Your system administrator creates these values in Comet Tracker. For example, in Timekeeping, you may have to choose from specific values on clock in, such as Vehicle Number or Employee Number. Additionally, your administrator may allow you to enter unique data.
Required fields are designated by an asterisk. List fields are designated by a drop-down arrow. Asterisked fields will accept any combination of alphanumeric, special characters or spaces, depending on what your administrator has configured.
As shown on the custom form below, the Tool, Qty and Pay Collected fields are required. Additionally, the Pay Collected field features data options to choose from, indicated by the drop-down arrow.

Messages
M
Send/receive messages to or from the home office. New messages are indicated by an asterisk on the envelope. mComet messages can be retrieved/deleted from the handset mailbox.
Clock In - Displays in upper right corner of screen to show clocked in status.
Clock Out - Displays in upper right corner of screen to show clocked out status.
Asterisk -
Displays next to a form field that has pre-set values for completion. Additionally, the asterisk indicates that the field is required.
Camera -
Displays next to a camera-activated form field.
Signature

Displays next to fields that will accept signatures.

Dropdown List Fields
Press the space key to move through each item on a dropdown list.
Press any alphanumeric or character key on the handset to move through dropdown list data of the same type.

Setting Up mComet
On installation, mComet will perform an automatic setup using your PTN (Personal Telephone Number) if it has been configured in Comet Tracker. If your PTN has not been configured, enter your Account Number and User Number manually on the setup screen. Complete the setup process while you are in network coverage.
Your account and user number are stored on the handset. If this information changes, choose Setup from the main menu to re-enter the information.
All archived forms on the handset will be deleted if the handset setup is modified.
1. Choose the mComet icon from the handset’s main menu, or the Setup icon.
The mComet icon will display on the main menu only if you have set it to display there. See Setting Application Options on page 9 for more information on this setting.
2. The mComet Setup screen displays. Enter your company’s Account Number (provided by Actsoft) and User Number. You only need to complete this information the first time you run mComet.
3. Display the submenu and choose Done.
mComet sends the account and user information and downloads the handset settings from the server.
The mComet menu displays. User setup is now complete. Menu options are determined by your Comet Tracker system administrator.

Suspending and Returning to mComet
Return to the handset’s main menu by pressing the End/Power key. mComet is suspended, but you are still logged in and the application continues to obtain and transmit data in the background. You can now use the handset features. Resume the application by choosing the mComet icon from the home screen.
Setting a Pin Code
mComet allows you to set a pin code in two (2) areas to restrict access to:
• Application setup screens • Supervisor screens
1. Choose Setup or Supervisor from the main menu.
2. Display the submenu and select Set Pin.
3. On the Pin Code screen, enter up to 30 numeric characters for your pin code, and choose OK.
The pin code is recorded and the Setup screen displays.
4. On the Setup screen, display the submenu and choose Done.

Changing the Pin Code
1. Select either Setup or Supervisor Time Entry from the main menu.
2. Display the submenu and choose Set Pin.
3. Enter the Old Pin Code, and then the New Pin Code. Choose OK.
To delete the Pin Code, enter the old Pin Code, and leave the Enter New Pin Code field blank.
Setting Panic Mode
Panic mode tracks users during an emergency. When panic mode is activated, mComet obtains new position information every 5 seconds and transmits the data immediately to the server. The Comet Tracker workstation shows that you have activated panic mode and the position information is displayed.
Panic Resume Timeout
Use the Panic Resume Timeout setting on the Options screen to set the number of minutes that will pass before mComet will be resumed if it has been suspended. This allows you to access mComet quickly and press the appropriate key to alert the office to an emergency.
Set Panic mode to use the convenience keys on either side of the handset:

1. Press the Menu key to access the handset menu and select Options.
2. Select Screen/Keyboard from the Options menu.
3. Scroll down to the Right Side Convenience Key Opens field.
4. Display the submenu and choose Nothing. The convenience key is now set to be used in panic mode.
5. At the ‘Changes Made’ message dialog, choose Save to save your new key configuration.
Activating Panic Mode
1. Press the Convenience key on the left side of the handset for 5 seconds.
The handset vibrates and a red panic icon (circle) blinks in the upper right corner of the screen.
2. Deactivate panic mode by again pressing the convenience button for 5 seconds.

Using Worker Status
Use Worker Status to communicate updates on your availability. Before you choose a status, ‘No Status’ displays on the title bar. After you choose a status, the updated status will display. It is also displayed on the Comet Tracker workstation.
Statuses can be linked to forms for additional information. For example, an Available or Unavailable status can be linked to a From Time/To Time form that must be completed before the status is accepted.
1. Select Worker Status from the main menu. Or, press the handset W key.
2. Select a status.
The new status will display on the title bar. Any forms required for the status will display for completion.
Now, your login is associated with your selected status until you change it. If you choose an incorrect status, repeat the process.
Using Repeat Timer Alerts with Worker Statuses
Repeat timer alerts can be linked to worker statuses to provide ongoing updates. With repeat timers, a time interval is associated with a status.
For example, a 15-minute timer can be associated with a 'Started Route' status to estimate how long it takes to reach a destination. This data can help administrators to assign jobs and manage workloads more efficiently.

When repeat timer alerts are set up for your handset in Comet Tracker, the handset will:
• resume mComet for validation, if mComet has been suspended • display a repeat timer message • sound an audible alert • vibrate the handset
When the repeat timer alert sounds, the handset will display the following message onscreen: ‘This status <name> requires a check in every <n> minutes’.
Choose OK to confirm your status. The repeat timer continues to time your activity or status in the background. Each time the message is cleared, the updated status is sent to the Comet Tracker workstation.
To change the status when you have completed the conditions of the timer alert, return to the Worker Status icon on the main menu and change the status. See Using Worker Status on page 32 for more information.

Working with Time Entry
Supervisor time entry and worker time entry (time punch) allow supervisors and workers to change time cycle statuses. Time entry records are also available on the CT workstation and can be modified as necessary.
Supervisor time entry or Worker time entry must be activated for your account by Actsoft Comet Tracker Support. Note: Supervisor time entry and worker time entry will not both display on your handset – if you have one, you will not have the other.
Setting Up Supervisor Time Entry
1. Select Setup from the main menu. Or, press the handset U key.
If prompted, enter the Pin Code on the Pin Code screen. If no pin code has been set, the Pin Code screen will not display.
2. On the Setup screen, display the submenu and select Options.
3. Enter the number of the field that contains the Employee Number in Comet Tracker into the Employee # Field field. See your Comet Tracker system administrator for this number.
You cannot enter a value greater than the number of available Clock In fields.
4. Select Use Employee Break to include the On Break and Off Break events in the time status cycle.
If a worker is currently clocked in, the next event is On Break. It will be available on the Supervisor screen. Press the Space key to toggle the option on or off.
5. Select Use Employee Lunch to include the On Lunch and Off Lunch events in the time status cycle. The lunch event will be available on the Supervisor screen.

Using Supervisor Time Entry
The fields that display on the time entry screens are specified by your Comet Tracker system administrator.
1. Select Supervisor from the main menu.
The Supervisor Time Entry screen displays.
2. Press the Menu key, choose Add Employee, and complete any required clock in fields.
After you have entered multiple workers, the Supervisor Time Entry screen will display a listing of worker- or supervisor-entered records.
3. To record the next event for one worker, select the worker and choose an event.

4. To advance multiple worker statuses, check Select All and choose an event, such as Clock In/Out or Lunch On/Off. mComet will perform the action on only the statuses logically affected by the change.
5. To delete a record, select the desired worker, display the submenu and select Delete. To delete all records, display the submenu and choose Delete All.
Setting Up Worker Time Entry
Set up worker time entry to advance other workers to the next time cycle event.
1. Choose Setup from the main menu.
2. Select Options on the Setup screen. The Options screen displays.
3. Enter the number of the field that contains the Employee Number in Comet Tracker into the Employee # Field field. See your Comet Tracker system administrator for this number.
4. Select Use Timekeeping Break to include the On Break and Off Break events in the time status cycle. If a worker is currently clocked in, the next event is On Break.
5. Select Use Timekeeping Lunch to include the On Lunch and Off Lunch events in the time status cycle.

Use Time Punch (worker time entry) to clock other workers in/out, on/off lunch, or on/off break. If the Time Punch icon displays on the main menu, the Supervisor Time Entry icon will not display.
1. Select Time Punch from the main menu. Or, press the handset P key.
The Time Punch screen displays. Note that fields on the screen may vary.
2. Complete the required fields, and select a time status.
3. Choose Ok to confirm the status change. The worker’s changed time status will not display onscreen.
Clocking In
When you are ready to begin work, clock in to mComet. Clocking in automatically records the date and time that you start work. It is also displayed on the Comet Tracker workstation.
The icon in the top right corner of the screen indicates your clocked in or clocked out status.

2. The Timekeeping screen displays with your status of ‘Currently Clocked Out’. Available time statuses display along the bottom of the screen.

4. Complete the Clock In fields by using the handset keypad, or with a scanner, if required.
Fields on the Clock In screens are specified by your Comet Tracker system administrator. For information on completing Clock In fields using a barcode scanner, see Using Scanners with mComet on page 70.
5. Choose Clock In again.
The mComet main menu displays with the options available to you. The clocked in icon displays in the upper right portion of the screen.
The Forms and GPS Status options are available only if they have been set up by your system administrator. The Landmark option must be enabled by Actsoft Technical Support.

Clocking Out
Clock out when you have completed your work shift. The time and date are recorded and displayed on the Comet Tracker workstation. Your administrator creates the available Clock Out data fields.
Administrators can also set automatic clock out. Do not clock out if your handset is set to clock out automatically.
1. Select Timekeeping from the main menu. Or, press the handset T key.
The Timekeeping screen displays with your status of ‘Currently Clocked in’.
2. Choose Clock Out.
3. Complete Clock Out fields using the keypad or with a scanner, if required. For information on completing fields with a barcode scanner, see Using Scanners with mComet on page 70.
4. Choose Clock Out again. The clocked out icon in the top right corner of the screen indicates that you are currently clocked out.
Clocking On and Off Break
Break status, time and date are automatically recorded and displayed on the Comet Tracker workstation.
1. Select Timekeeping from the main menu.
2. Choose Start Break. The screen indicates your status, and records the length of your break.

End Break is now highlighted, as it is the next status in the time cycle.
3. To end your break, select End Break.
Clocking On and Off Lunch
Lunch status, time and date are automatically recorded and displayed on the Comet Tracker workstation.

The screen indicates that you are on lunch, and starts recording your lunch break.

Working with Forms
Use Forms to record information on the handset. A form can be created for any type of job function (service call, delivery, customer visit, etc.). Forms is available only if it has been configured by your system administrator. Your system administrator creates the customized fields on the form.
When you send completed form data from the handset, Comet Tracker automatically records the date and time of completion. You can also create child records to enter more information about a main form.
You can also enter and save form data to edit later. The number of archived forms that can be stored is limited to the handset’s memory.
You can scan barcodes into form fields with OS 4.0 and 6.0 BlackBerry models that feature a camera and the auto-focus feature. Additionally, the barcode to be scanned must be of high resolution, and the lighting must be sufficient for capturing without flash.
Note that scanning barcodes using the camera is not designed to replace an external scanning device, and is not feasible for extensive scanning.
If you change the user and account number on a handset with stored forms, all the archived forms will be deleted. A warning message will display before you can proceed.
Forms cannot be archived when linked to orders.
Using Auto-Form
With auto-form, scanned form data is sent automatically to the server after a set time interval. You do not have to select ‘Send’ to send the data. Use auto-form in two ways:
• Directly from the main menu screen, if your CT administrator has created a default form in Comet Tracker. Begin scanning from the main menu screen, or suspended status, if mComet was suspended at the main screen. The Default form screen displays, and the first field is populated with the scanned data.
• From an order listing, if a form set is linked to the order status. Navigate to an order and begin scanning.
As you scan, each subsequent field highlights. If you continue to scan after all fields are filled, you will overwrite the contents of the last field.

To begin working with forms:
1. Select Forms from the main menu.
Hot key: Press the F key on the handset keypad.
2. Select a form from the Form Selection screen. The Form Selection screen lists customized forms, blank forms and archived forms.
3. Use the keypad on your handset to complete the information for each form field.
4. Or, use the handset’s camera function to scan a barcode into a text or editable drop-down field. Display the submenu and choose Scan Barcode.
5. Center the barcode in the camera viewer, and press the appropriate key to capture the barcode. Processing may take up to 60 seconds.
6. Choose Send when you have finished entering all form data.
For information on how to complete form fields using an external barcode scanner, see Using Scanners with mComet on page 70.
Adding Images to Forms
Add details to forms with images. Forms with images must include a data value. Add images to forms in either of 2 ways:

• With a form or child form onscreen, display the submenu and select Camera.
• Navigate to a camera field to invoke the camera automatically. Camera-activated fields
are marked with a camera icon.
1. When the captured image displays, display the submenu and select Accept to keep the image, or Reject to retake the image.
2. Press the Menu key and choose Images to review captured images before submitting.
3. Choose Send to submit all form data.
Adding Signatures to Forms
At times, you may have to complete forms or orders with a signature. You may add a signature in any regular (not advanced wireless) form field. After the signature is captured form fields configured for signatures will display [SIGNATURE], while non-configured will accept the signature as an image.
The process for adding signatures differs based on the handset model.
Using the Grabba™ scanner:
1. Navigate to your desired field, and turn the Grabba scanner over.
2. On the back of the Grabba™ scanner, tap Start in the lower left corner of the screen with your stylus. The handset will emit a tone to indicate readiness.
3. Using the stylus, sign next to the ‘X’ onscreen, and tap Stop in the lower right corner of the screen.
4. On the handset, the field will display [SIGNATURE] if it has been configured to accept a field. If it has not been configured, it will save the signature as an image.

5. Display the submenu and choose Accept to keep the signature, or Reject to re-sign.
6. When you are finished with the form, choose Send to submit all form data.
Using a Touch-screen BlackBerry
1. Navigate to the desired field, and display the submenu.
2. Choose Signature. When the screen converts to the signature pad, you can sign with a finger.
3. Press the Menu key again and choose Save.
Creating Child Forms
Create a child form to enter more information for a main form. The Child form option must be configured first by your system administrator.
1. From a Form screen, display the submenu and select Child Form.
The Child Fields screen displays. The title bar shows the number of the current record and the total number of child records created. Fields with cameras on the ends activate the camera.
2. Complete the fields, entering up to 30 characters in each field. For information on how to
complete fields with a barcode scanner, see Using Scanners with mComet on page 70.
3. To add another child form, select More.
4. Display the submenu for more child form command options.

Advanced Forms
Advanced forms are an mComet additional feature. Check your company’s software agreement to see if you have access to advanced forms.
Advanced forms allow companies to customize new forms, or recreate paper forms for completion on the handset. You can also save or archive forms on the handset to edit later. The handset’s memory determines how many forms you can archive. All archived forms will be deleted if you change the user and account number on a handset with stored forms. A warning message will display before you can continue.
Anatomy of an Advanced Form
In Forms Designer, your administrator creates forms that include various screen elements, such as buttons, drop-down lists and checkboxes. A main form is created, and then decision field sections are added based on the data to be gathered. Repeatable forms are also created to list multiple items of the same type.
Screen Elements and Field Behavior
Drop-down lists – Arrows next to a field indicate available data choices. If configured, you can select multiple values, or add unique values.
Decision fields – Fields requiring you to make a decision after you enter data are shaded. The text Leads to a decision displays under the field.
Drop-down list searching – Enter search criteria in the text field at the top of the drop-down list to search list values. If the field is editable, you can add a unique value to the list, and choose Add when you are finished. Added values stay at the top of the list unless deleted, changed in the Forms Designer or if the account/user numbers are changed.

Calculation fields - Calculation fields contain formulas that calculate data put into advanced forms. Using them can save time and increase the accuracy of simple or complex operations. The form below performs a simple totals calculation.
Perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Calculations can only be performed using currency and numeric fields.
Repeatable fields – Values entered into repeatable fields can be used for count, sum and averaging calculations. For example, you can count, total (sum) or average the prices of parts listed in all repeatable fields. They are designated by a multiple page icon, as shown below:
Asterisks and Icons –Fields with asterisks are required, and camera-activated fields display a camera icon. Multi-select drop-downs – If it has been pre-configured, you can choose multiple values in a field. To delete a drop-down list value, press and hold the value, and then confirm the action. Email field – Search for and select email addresses from the handset contact list by pressing in the email field. As you enter a new address, the text displays red until it conforms to normal email protocol, and change to green when it is acceptable. Click Add to add a new email to the contact list, and Accept Selection to list the contact as a recipient.

3. Enter a currency amount in the ‘Estimated Cost’ field and choose an answer to ‘Customer Accept Estimate’. Note that both sections are shaded, indicating that they are repeatable sections.

4. When you select ‘Yes’ to Customer Accept Estimate, the Parts Used repeatable field section displays, as indicated by the multiple page icon.
5. Click on the Parts Used section, and the repeatable field displays. Choose More to create and complete this form as many times as needed to list all parts used.
6. Add more information about the part type(s) used on the repeatable screens that follow, and choose Done.
After you finish all necessary repeatable forms, the main form will redisplay for completion.
7. Continue to the next section of the form, Job Completed. Select No.

Working with Orders
Use Orders to:
• Receive and view detailed information about dispatched orders • Update order status • Enter more information about dispatched and completed orders
When new orders have been dispatched to the handset, the handset will begin to alternate between four red and four blue flashes until you read at least one new order.
Order Alerts
If you are in the network coverage area, you may receive an order alert on your handset to inform you when a new order has been dispatched or if an order has changed.
When an order alert message displays, choose OK from the alert message to refresh the order information automatically.
Refreshing Orders
To refresh orders:
1. From the Order Screen, display the submenu and choose Refresh Orders.
Hot key: Press the E key on the handset keypad to refresh order information.
2. Any new orders assigned to you are displayed on the Order Screen, with an asterisk on the
left. The asterisk indicates that the order has not been read.

Reading Orders
When you select Orders, the orders assigned to you are displayed. An asterisk precedes new, unread orders. Up to 200 orders can be displayed on the handset. When you reach 200, purge viewed orders to receive new orders.
1. Choose Orders from the main menu. Or, press the handset O key. The number of new unread orders will display on the icon.
2. On the Order screen, choose an order, display the submenu and select Read Order from the menu.
Hot key: Press the R key on the handset keypad to read information for the selected order.
3. Review the order information.
Click on hyperlinked text in the order information and send emails, map address routes or dial phone numbers.
4. Press the Escape key when you are finished reviewing order information.
The Order Screen redisplays. When an order has been read, the asterisk (*) no longer displays in front of the order.

Searching Order Information
1. Type your search criteria in the Search field.
2. Your order will display on the screen, or a message of ‘Order Not Found’.

Copy order information for use with other BlackBerry applications or mComet functions. For example, you can copy order information to include in an email, or to use in a message.
1. From the Order Details screen, press the C key to copy the text displayed.
2. Navigate to where you will paste the text, display the submenu, and choose Paste.

Updating Order Status
Statuses updated on the handset are displayed on the Comet Tracker workstation. You must be clocked in to update order statuses.
The statuses available on the handset are set by your Comet Tracker server administrator.
Your Comet Tracker administrator may set statuses so that they must be selected in a certain order. An error message will display if you choose a status that is out of sequence.
1. On the Orders screen, select an order, display the submenu, and choose Change Status.
Hot key: Press the S key on the handset keypad to access order status.
2. Choose a status from the list, display the submenu and choose Done. Any forms linked to the status you have chosen will display.
Hot key: Press the D key on the handset keypad to save the status.
3. When you are finished completing any linked forms, display the submenu and choose Done. The updated status displays in the order summary information on the handset, and on the Comet Tracker workstation.
4. To cancel the status change and choose a different status, display the submenu and choose Cancel.

Using Route Map
Use Route Map to show directional and text maps for the route between two locations. You must be within network coverage to view maps.
Due to handset memory restrictions, the entire set of maps may be unavailable for long routes.
1. Select an order, display the submenu and select Route Map.
Hot key: Press the M key on the handset keypad.
2. Choose the source position to use for the map.
If the GPS receiver cannot obtain a new position (for example, only a cell site position is available), you must choose another position source.
3. The summary map displays, showing an overview of the entire route.

The Directions screen displays with text directions for the route, including the distance and the estimated drive time from start to end.
7. To view your progress along the route, display the submenu and choose Refresh, or press R.
8. Select Get a new position to update the map using a new GPS position.
If the GPS receiver is unable to obtain a new position (for example, only a cell site position is available), you must choose another position source.
A new route summary map displays showing your new location along the route. The turn-by-turn maps and directions will also begin from your new location.
9. To exit the route map screen and return to the main menu, display the submenu and choose Close, or press C on the handset keypad.
Using Forms with Orders
If your system administrator has configured it, you can link forms to an order to add more information for an order.

Viewing GPS Status
Review your tracking status after clocking in if the GPS Status option displays on the main menu.
1. Select GPS Status from the main menu.
Hot key: Press the G key on the handset keypad to display GPS status information.
2. Review the information on the GPS Tracking Status screen. If you have not granted GPS permissions for mComet, a value of ‘Restricted’ displays in the Type field.
3. To update the data, display the submenu and select Update.

Working with Messaging
Use Messaging to communicate with supervisors and other workers. An asterisk will display on the main menu envelope when you have new messages. Additionally, the handset LED will flash red in a slow pattern until you read at least one new message.
New messages from mComet display in the handset Inbox along with non-mComet messages. Messages can be retrieved and read from within or outside mComet.
If you select an mComet new message from your handset Inbox, mComet will resume if suspended, or open if it is closed.
1. Choose Messaging from the main menu. Or, press the handset M key.
Current messages in your Inbox will display. Choose Refresh to display new messages, Sent Items to view sent messages, or Compose to begin a new message.
2. To display a message, select it and press Enter.
3. Review the message.
Click on hyperlinked text in the message and display the submenu to send emails, map address routes or dial phone numbers.
4. To type a response, display the submenu and choose Reply.

Working with Maps
Manager Map Configuration
Use Manager Map Config to set how workers display on the manager map. Then use Manager Map to view the workers on the map. You cannot use Manager Map if you have not first configured your map view with Manager Map Config.
1. Select Manager Map from the menu.
Hot key: Press the A key on the handset keypad.
2. Choose Manager Map Config at the prompt.
The Manager Map Config screen has two sections:
• User Map Labels - Identify workers by number or name on the manager map.
• User Groups - Create groups of workers to display on the manager map.
User Map Labels
In the User Map Labels section of the Manager Map Config screen, choose how workers are identified on the manager map. Your selection will appear on the label next to each worker. You must select at least one option.
1. Highlight the desired label option, display the submenu and choose Toggle Selected to select or deselect.

User Groups
Set up worker groups in the User Groups section of the Manager Map Config screen. If no groups have been created, ‘No Groups Defined’ displays. If user groups have been created, the available groups display.
1. On the Manager Map Config screen, highlight ‘No User Groups Defined’.
2. Display the submenu and choose Add Group.
Hot key: Press the A key on the handset keypad to add a group.
3. Enter a group name, display the submenu and choose Save.
4. Display the submenu and select Edit Group to add users to your new group.
5. The Selected Users for [YOUR GROUP] screen displays. Use the Toggle Selection option on the submenu to choose the users in your new group. If you have not already done so, you must download the list of available users before users are displayed. See the section on Viewing Selected Users on the Map on page 59 for instructions on this procedure.

6. Display the submenu and choose Done when you have selected all users for the group.
7. The new group is listed on the Manager Map Config screen. Repeat steps 1-6 to create and assign workers to additional groups. Workers can be assigned to multiple groups.
8. On the Manager Map Config screen, choose the groups to view on the manager map.
9. Use the options on the user group submenu to manage your user groups.

Manager Map
Use Manager Map to view your own location and your workers’ locations. You must be within network coverage to view maps. Additionally, BlackBerry maps are now also available for use.
First, you need to choose how the workers display on the map. If you have not configured your map view with Manager Map Config, mComet will prompt you to do so.
1. Select Manager Map from the menu.
Hot key: Press the A key on the handset keypad.
When you first open Manager Map, mComet will display a dialog allowing you to choose BlackBerry maps.
2. Choose a map service.
3. Choose the source position to use for the map.

Refreshing the Manager Map
Refresh the map to display updated locations of selected workers. Display the submenu and select Refresh, or press the R key on the handset.
Viewing Selected Users on the Map
Use View Selected Users to see workers on the manager map.
1. With a map onscreen, display the submenu and choose View Selected Users, or press the U key on the keypad.
The Selected Users screen displays ‘No Users’. Download the list of available users first.
2. To download an updated user list, display the submenu and select Update User List.
3. Select OK at the ‘updated’ dialog message. If you selected Don’t show current position as your
current position source for the map, your handset will not be displayed in the user list.

4. Display the submenu to toggle, select or unselect users, and choose Done when you are finished.
The map with the selected users is displayed, with each user identified. The indicates each worker’s position.
By default, workers are identified on the map by their user numbers. You can also choose to identify workers by their names. See Using Manager Map Config on page 60.
Zooming In or Out on the Manager Map
You can adjust the map resolution only if at least one user is selected and displayed on the map.
1. On the map, display the submenu and select Set Map Zoom.
Hot key: Press the Z key on the handset keypad.
2. Select the desired map zoom setting.
The map redisplays, zoomed in or out based on the percentage you selected. To zoom in or out further, repeat the first two steps.
Viewing Groups on the Manager Map
1. Choose Manager Map from the main menu.
Hot key: Press the A key on the handset keypad to access the Manager Map.

Viewing Address Information
The manager map allows you to view the current address information for yourself or for other users displayed on the map.
To view address information for other users, first view the desired users on the map. See Viewing Selected Users on the Map on page 62.
1. With the manager map onscreen, display the submenu and select User Addresses.

Your address information and other workers’ address information is displayed.

Save time by copying address information from the Manager Map function to other areas where you may need to enter address information.
1. With an address onscreen, display the submenu. Choose Copy to store the address.
2. Navigate to and click in the field where you want to paste the address.

You can download and display real-time maps showing your current location and the surrounding area. You must be within the network coverage area in order to view maps.

Getting Directions
Use the Directions feature to get driving directions and route maps. You must be within network coverage to view maps.

2. On the Destination Address screen, enter as much of the address information as possible. mComet will geocode the address based on the information you provide.

Or, you can copy address information from the User Address screen in the Manager Map area of mComet. For more information, see Using Manager Map on page 55. Press the Back key to access the destination address field if necessary.
3. Display the submenu and select Lookup Address. mComet matches the address you entered to geocoded addresses.
4. The geocoded address that corresponds to the address you entered displays on the bottom of the screen. If an exact match cannot be found, other possible addresses are shown.
5. To view driving directions from your current location to the destination address, select the
address, display the submenu and choose Get Directions.

Creating Landmarks
If Landmarks has been activated for your account, you can create landmarks for various locations. The landmark is stored in the database and is available on the Comet Tracker workstation.
Additionally, you may need to clock in to access this option.
1. Select Landmark from the main menu. mComet begins searching for your location.
Hot key: Press the L key on the handset keypad to access the landmark function.
2. Enter a name for your landmark in the Name field. Note that all the Landmark screen fields are required.
Earlier versions of mComet will not display the latitude and longitude fields.
If maps are installed, mComet will display a map of your location. When your location is found, it will display as a green circle with an ‘X’.
3. Use the 1 key (zoom out) or the 3 key (zoom in) on your handset to navigate to a location. Or you can hold the handset ALT key and use the scroll key to set a location.
If you change the location, the Latitude and Longitude fields are repopulated.
4. Display the submenu and choose Done or press the Back key to repeat the process.
The landmark data is sent to the application server and is available on the Comet Tracker workstation.
If a GPS position is unavailable, mComet will display the message ‘GPS fix failed – please try again in a clear view of the sky.’

Barcode Scanners
mComet uses your handset’s Bluetooth® technology to scan barcodes using a handheld scanner. Custom barcodes can be created for any purpose, and existing barcodes, such as UPC/EAN/JAN, Code 39, Code 128, and Interleaved 2 of 5, are supported. See the Appendix for a full list of supported barcodes.
Additionally, mComet supports the Grabba™ S-Series Scanner, which does not use Bluetooth technology. The BlackBerry handset plugs into the Grabba™ S-Series scanner, and the scanner must be charged. See Using the Grabba Scanner on page 81 for more information on using the Grabba™ scanner.
Enabling Bluetooth and Pairing the Devices
1. Select Setup from the main menu.
2. On the Setup screen, display the submenu and choose Device.
3. On the Device Setup screen, choose the device type.

mComet attempts to enable the device. When a device is found, it is listed on the Bluetooth Devices screen. If no device is found, a dialog message of ‘None’ will display on the handset screen.
4. Select the desired device, display the submenu, and choose Select from the Bluetooth Devices screen.
5. Enter the passkey (default: 0000).
6. Press the Escape key to return to the handset menu.
7. Choose Settings > Bluetooth.
8. Choose your device from those listed on the screen.
9. Display the submenu and select Device Properties from the menu.
10. On the Device Properties screen, display the submenu and select Trusted.
11. Display the submenu and select Change Option.
12. Select Yes at the prompt.
13. Still on the Device Properties screen, set Encryption to Disabled.
14. Display the submenu and select Save.
15. Press the Escape key twice to return to the main menu.

Using Scanners with mComet
1. Press the Scan button on the scanner once. The green LED blinks twice every two seconds. This indicates that the scanner is in discovery mode.
2. Navigate to one of the four (4) screens that allow barcode scans:
• Form/Child form • Repeatable Form • Clock In • Clock Out
On the scanner, observe that the green LED only blinks once every two seconds. This means that the scanner is now connected. As long as the scanner is connected, you can use it on any allowable screen without re-enabling it from the menu.
If the scanner remains idle for longer than 10 minutes, it goes into Sleep mode (the LED stops blinking), and a Scanner Disconnected message displays on the handset. Press the Scan button on the scanner once to resume using the scanner.
3. Select a field and scan the desired barcode.
mComet advances to the next record when you reach the last field on a screen. You can continue to scan without overwriting any fields.
When scanning, the handset emits different tones to indicate a successful or unsuccessful scan. A scan may be unsuccessful if the scanned information conflicts with the form field constraints or a barcode is more than 30 characters in length.
Resetting the Scanner
If the scanner fails to connect properly or disconnects immediately, you may need to reset the scanner to the factory defaults. Exit mComet before resetting the scanner.
1. On the main menu, select Options.
2. On the Options screen, select Bluetooth from the list.

3. Select the name of your scanner device, display the submenu and choose Delete Device.
4. Scan the Factory Defaults barcode provided with your scanner documentation.
5. To re-enable the scanner, see Using Scanners with mComet on page 70.
Important Notes On Scanning
• If the scanner does not have an active link to the handset, barcode data is stored. When the link is re-established, the stored barcodes are sent to the handset.
• When scanning, the handset emits different tones to indicate successful or unsuccessful scans. A scan may be unsuccessful if the data conflicts with the form field constraints, or if a barcode is more than 30 characters long.
• If you scan a barcode containing an invalid character, an error displays on the handset screen. The error displays the first invalid character in the barcode. Clear the error to continue scanning. The barcode scanner itself will emit an unsuccessful tone to notify you if you are away from the handset while scanning.
• If the scanner has trouble connecting or disconnects immediately, you may need to reset the scanner to the factory defaults. To reset the scanner, scan the factory default barcode included with the scanner’s documentation.

Using a Printer
mComet release 6.0.20 supports the Samsung Bixolon® SPP-R200 printer. This is a handheld Bluetooth mobile printer that can print up to 800mm per second (3.15 inches). The SPP-R200 uses a lithium-ion battery with an 8-hour continuous battery life. Stand-by operational time is 14 hours; a single battery charge can print up to 10 paper rolls.
Text screens that are printable from within mComet are:
• Order Details • Directions (if Routing is enabled) • Debug Log • EULA (only selected carriers/devices)

Pairing the Printer
To pair the printer with your handset:
1. Select Setup from the main menu.

Setting Up Order Alerts
An order alert notifies a worker of newly dispatched orders and/or orders that have changed recently. In order to receive these notifications, at least one of the handset’s profiles must be configured.
Workers must be within the network coverage area to receive new order alerts.
1. Press the Menu key to access the handset menu, and select Sounds.
On the Sounds menu, you can specify the sound played when an order alert is received, the volume level, and when to use them (in or out of the holster).
2. Choose Set Ring Tones/Alerts on the Select a Sound Profile submenu.
3. Choose Other and then select mComet New Order Alert.
On the mComet New Order Alert screen are two sets of five settings; one for Out of the Holster alerts and another set for In Holster alerts. Some of these settings require a minimum value for mComet new order alerts to function properly.

Setting Up Auto-form Timeout
The Auto-form feature allows you to scan barcodes or RFID tags without having to navigate to the Forms screen. When you scan a barcode or tag, the Form screen automatically opens, and data is recorded in the first editable field. New record fields continue to display for data entry until you are finished.
When you are finished, the data is sent directly to the server after the interval set in the Auto-form Timeout field.
1. Select Setup from the main menu.
2. If prompted, enter the Pin Code on the Pin Code screen. If no pin code has been set, the Pin Code screen will not display.
3. On the Setup screen, display the submenu and select Options.
4. Enter the number seconds that mComet should wait before forwarding the data to the server after you complete a form.

Account number An Actsoft-issued number used to access mComet on the handset.
Asset Any object owned by a company that can be tracked, such as equipment.
Barcode scanner A device used to scan barcodes from objects into the handset.
Child form A subform that provides additional information about the main (or parent) form.
Conditional section A shaded area of a handset form that contains data that the user must respond to. Depending on the user’s response, additional sections may display for completion.
Comet Tracker The suite of applications used to configure GPS monitoring and the mComet application on the handset. There are four (4) versions of Comet Tracker:
• Comet EZ (Web version) • Comet Tracker • Comet Mobile Worker • Comet Tracker Lite (handset tracking only – no
desktop application required) Form An mComet feature used to record and store data on
the handset. A form can be set up for any type of job function (service call, delivery, customer visit, etc.). Forms is available only if it has been configured by your system administrator. Your system administrator creates the customized fields for data capture.
GSM Global System for Mobile communications. GSM is a digital mobile telephony system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. It uses a variation of time division multiple access (TDMA) and is the most widely used of the three digital wireless telephony technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band.
GPS A satellite-based radio navigation system that consists of three segments – the satellite constellation, ground control network, and user equipment. People use GPS on their mobile devices for navigation software applications.

GPS Status A collection of handset user positional data that consists of:
• Last position • Time • Type • Sats • Lat • Lon • Stored • LCL • UTC
Landmark A geographical location that users can mark and store in the handset for retrieval, such as an address on a delivery route.
Lat The latitude of the handset as recorded by the satellite(s). Found on the GPS Status screen.
LCL The current local time. Found on the GPS Status screen. Lon The longitudinal GPS position of the handset as
recorded by the satellite(s). Found on the GPS Status screen.
mComet The handset application used with the Comet Tracker workstation application that allows workers in the field to communicate with the home office. mComet uses built-in GPS tracking function to gather location information at specified time intervals and transmit the resulting data to the hosted server. Use it to clock in and out of work shifts, enter information about jobs, and receive updated forms while in the field.
Panic mode An mComet mode that tracks handset users in an emergency. mComet will track and submit handset position information to the server at 5-second intervals. The handset will vibrate briefly when panic mode is activated.
Pin code A user-defined, 30-character-limit numerical field that is used as a password for access to certain options. You do not have to set a pin code to use mComet.
PTN Personal Telephone Number. When your PTN is configured in Comet Tracker, mComet will automatically log you on upon initial installation.

Repeatable form A form used multiple times to enter related data. For example, multiple parts used on a service call can be entered into separate repeatable forms.
ROV Remotely-Operated Vehicle. Sats Found on the Tracking Status screen, it is the number
of satellites used for getting the current location. SMS A communication service standardized in the GSM
mobile communication system, using standardized communications protocols allowing the interchange of short text messages between mobile telephone devices.
Time status cycle A linear set of user work statuses (Clocked In, Clocked Out, On Break, Off Break, On Lunch, Off Lunch) used to advance workers through their workday.
Type The source type(s) used for the latitude and longitude. Found on the GPS Status screen.
User number An Actsoft-issued number used for access to the mComet on the handset.
UTC Universal Time Coordinated. Found on the GPS Status screen.
