AbouttheMCMProgram

TheMCMprogramisofferedbySchoolofCommunicationandInformation(SC&I).TheProgramisofferedincollaborationbetweentheDepartmentofCommunicationandtheDepartmentofJournalismandMediaStudies.Adaptingtoaudiences,designingeffectivecommunicationstrategies,collaboratingandresolvingconflicteffectively,andleveragingsocialmediaareafewofthecomplexitiesofcommunicationthatMCMstudentslearntounderstand.Foundedin1987,TheMCMprogramisdesignedtoprovideitsstudentswithopportunitiestoexecuteacourseofstudythatenablesthemtoleveragetheoreticalunderstandingofcriticalcommunicationandinformationprocessesintopracticeoradvanceddoctoralstudies.OursevenspecializedtracksinCommunicationandMediaStudies,StrategicOrganizationalCommunication,DigitalMedia,HealthCommunication,CommunicationandMediaResearch,PublicRelationsorLeadershipCommunicationenablestudentstoeitherfocusstudyinoneareaorcombineareasofstudytotailoraprogramforstudents'careergoals.Ourstudentsjoinusfromavarietyofbackgroundsanddisciplines.Approximatelytwothirdsofourstudentscometouswithsignificantworkingexperienceandtheotherthirdcomedirectlyfromundergraduateprograms.Someofourstudentscomewithstrongcommunicationbackgroundsinstudyaswellasexperience,althoughmanycomefromavarietyofotherrelatedbackgroundssuchasbusiness,sociology,publichealth,socialwork,English,IT,andthehumanities.Ourfacultyarecutting-edgeresearchersandpractitionerswhounderstandtheimportanceofleveraginggeneralknowledgeandtheoryintopractice.Studentsintheprogramwilllearnhowunderstandingunderlyingdynamicsandessentialprocessesofcommunication,interaction,andknowledgecreationcanenablehigh-levelskillexecutioninpractice.Theprogramdrawsdiversegroupsofstudentswithavarietyofemployment,educational,cultural,andnationalbackgroundswithawidevarietyofgoals:Recentgraduatesofbachelorprogramsseekingadvancedknowledge;experiencedprofessionalsseekingcareeradvancementorcareerchange;studentsboundforPh.D.programsinCommunicationorMediaStudies.

AbouttheProgramLeadership

TheMCMdegreeisofferedandadministeredbytheDepartmentofCommunicationledbytheMCMDirector(Dr.RichardDool),whoisalsoafacultymember.TheMCMExecutiveCommitteeincludesrepresentativesfromtheProgramfacultywhoworkwiththeDirectoronallissuesrelatedtotheprogram’sadministration.Teachingfacultyincludesthefull-time,tenure-trackmembersofeachofthethreedepartmentsintheSchoolaswellaspart-timelecturers(PTLs)withoutstandingandrelevanteducationalandprofessionalbackgrounds.

OverviewoftheProgramRequirements

MCMstudentscomplete36creditstoearntheirdegree.Theprogramisself-paced(3-12creditspersemester).Studentscanchoosebetweensixspecificspecializationsandonegeneralspecialization.Studentsareadmittedtothegeneralprogramandmaystaywithinaspecializedtrackormaycombinetrackstofocusonmultipleareasofinterest.Studentsmustcomplete15creditsofcorerequirements;and21creditsofelectives.Upto6creditsofgraduateworkcanbetransferredinfromanotherUniversityorfromothergraduateprogramsatRutgers.

Specializations

CommunicationandMediaStudiesInthisgeneralspecializationstudentswilltakeaself-designedcourseofstudydrawingacrossanyofthespecializedMCMspecializationsaswellascoursesinotherareasoftheSchool.Coursesinorganizationalcommunication,mediatedcommunication,healthcommunication,socialinteraction,knowledgemanagement,andmediastudiesareofferedthroughouttheyear.Manyofthesecoursesarecross-listedwiththedoctoralprogramintheSchool.StrategicOrganizationalCommunicationIntheStrategicOrganizationalCommunicationspecializationstudentsareabletoemphasizetheory-basedstudyoforganizationalprocess,structure,andinteractionaswellasuseofnewcommunicationtechnologiesinorganizationalandsocietalcontexts.Coursesexamineorganizationsinavarietyofcontextsincludingbusinesses,nonprofits,civilsociety,andgovernment.Thisspecializationmaybeespeciallyappealingforthosewhohavegoalsforcareersinorganizationalleadership,corporatecommunication,advocacy,administrationand/ormanagement,traininganddevelopment,consulting,changemanagement,stakeholderrelationshipmanagement,andsocialmediamanagement.Electivesinthisspecializationincludecoursesdealingwithorganizationalleadership,organizationaldecision-making,inter-organizationalrelationships,organizationalchange,organizationaltraining&development,persuasion&advocacy,networks,collaboration&conflict,globalorganizations,virtualorganizing,work&technology,knowledgemanagement,informationpolicy,competitiveintelligenceandsocialmedia.

DigitalMedia(AvailableFullyOnline)Thisspecializationisintendedforjournalistsandothercommunicationspecialistswhowishtoretoolandgainunderstandingof21stcenturymedia.Thisincludesstudyofgrassrootsreportingandadvocacy.Thespecializationwillensurestudentsareconversantindigitalvideocapture,editing,andproductionaswellassocialmediamanagement.Thisspecializationiscompletelyonline(althoughface-to-faceoronlineelectivesinotherspecializationsareavailabletothesestudentsaswell).Electivesinthisspecializationincludenewmedialawandpolicy,critiquingmarketingcommunications,digitaljournalism,digitaladvocacyandpersuasion,globalization,mediaandsocialchange,anddigitalmediaproduction,andinterfacedesign,amongothers.HealthCommunicationThisspecializationisintendedforstudentswhowishtospecializeinvariouscontextsrelatedtocommunitywellnessandhealthinteractionsuchaspublichealthcommunication;facilitatedprovider-patientcommunication;healthcampaignsandadvocacy;andcommunityhealthandwellness.Electivesinthisspecializationincludepersuasion&advocacy,e-publichealth,community-basedorganizing,interpersonalhealth,healthcampaigns,mediatedhealthcommunication,healthinformatics,socialinformatics,andrecordsmanagement.StudentswhohaveinterestsinhealthorganizationsmaywishtocombinestudyinthisspecializationwithstudyintheStrategicOrganizationalCommunicationspecialization.CommunicationandMediaResearchTheCommunicationandMediaResearchspecializationisintendedforstudentswhowishtotakeamoreresearch-orientedcourseofstudy.ItisalsodesignedforthosestudentswhomaywishtopursueaPh.D.programaftercompletingtheMCMdegree.Thesestudentshavesomewhatdifferentrequirements(9creditsofcore;3creditsofresearchpracticum;3creditsofteachinginternship;21creditsofelectivesandalsoazero-creditColloquiumrequirement).Inadditiontocoursework,thesestudentswillbeinvolvedinempiricalresearchwithafacultymember;assistinteachingacourse;andfocustheirstudyandcapstoneprojectwitharesearchorientation.LeadershipCommunicationTheMCMprogramalsooffersaspecializationinLeadershipCommunication.Leadershipcommunicationisrankedinthetopleadershipcompetenciesinastudyofmorethan330,000leaders.Leaderstodaymustbeadeptinallmaincommunicationmodalities–onetoone,onetomany,andinthevarious‘e’formsanditmustbedoneatthespeedofnow.Ourprogramiswhereleaderscometolearntocommunicateevenmoreeffectively.

TheMCMLeadershipCommunicationspecializationwillhelpstudentsenhancetheirstrategiccommunicationperspectivewhileimprovingskillsinspeaking,listening,observing,questioning,reflecting,andwriting.Theprogramblendstheory-informed,research-basedstudyofthecommunicationdemandsonleaders,withpracticalskillstoeffectivelyleadinthisfastpaced,complexorganizationalenvironment.

PublicRelationsOneofthenewprogramsistheMCMPublicRelationsspecialization.PublicRelationsisoneofthe10fastestgrowingprofessionsintheU.S.andgovernmenteconomistsexpectjobsforPRspecialiststogrowfasterthanaverageforallcareersthrough2020.PublicRelationsisadynamicandgrowingprofessionandourprogramispositionedtoofferauniqueblendoftheoryandpractice.OurfacultyofworldclassresearchersandseniorPRprofessionalswillgiveourstudentsthePRperspectivesandskillstodifferentiatetheirprofessionalcredentials.”

ThisMCMconcentrationisdesignedforpublicrelationsprofessionalstoenhancetheirprofessionalcredentialsandforthosewhowishtoenterthisfastgrowinganddynamicprofession.Thespecializationexploresthecompetenciesneededtobeaneffectivepublicrelationspractitionerinthedynamic,complex,andsocialmediadrivenPRenvironment.Additionally,RutgersislocatedconvenientlyinthepublicrelationsepicenterbetweenNewYorkCityandPhiladelphia.

PoliciesAboutSpecializations

1. Studentsuseaspecializationtoorganizetheirstudiesandtofocusonanareaof

interest.Studentsarerequiredtoofficiallydeclareaspecializationandtocompletetheirdegreewithinagivenspecialization.However,studentscanchangespecializationsastheychoose.

2. Thereisnorequirementthatstudentsdeclarethattheyareswitchingspecializationif

theydecidetheirinterestschangeoverthecourseoftheirdegree.TheyshoulddiscussthiswiththeMCMDirectortoensuretheystayontrackforgraduation.

3. Theprogramstrivestoplancourseofferingssuchthatatleasttwoelectivesper

specializationareofferedeachspringandfallterm.Corecourseswillbeofferedatleastonceannually,butmostareofferedeachsemesterorintheSummersessions.

• CapstoneorE-Portfolio(chooseone)1)Capstoneisa3-creditfacultysupervisedprojectcompletedbyallMCMstudentsinornearthelastsemesterofstudy.CapstonerequiresstudentstointegratewhattheyhavelearnedintheMCMprogramthroughthecompletionofaclearlyfocusedcasestudy,literaturereview,orempiricalproject.Theprojectscanbeofanappliedorscholarlynature.Allprojectsareinformedwithliteratureandscholarlyknowledgegainedthroughtheprogram.Projectsaresupervisedbythecourseinstructoraswellasthroughfacultymentors.2)E-Portfolioisa3-creditonlinecourseinwhichstudentsdevelopaprofessionale-portfoliothatshowcasesaresume;academicwork,professionaldevelopmentcourses,certificationsand/ormilitaryservice;socialmediaandotherdigitalassets;relevantaudio/videomaterial;professional,communityandschoolactivities;andwritingsamples.Theclasswillleveragetheory,research,bestpractices,andcurrentthinkingtohelpeachindividualdeterminethemosteffectiveapproachtoreachrelevantstakeholdergroupsandtoidentifycriticalstepstoreachingcareergoals.Assignmentswillhelpstudentspreparetheire-portfolios,whichtheywillbeabletouseintheircareersearches.Feedbackfromtheinstructorandpeerswillprovidean“outside”perspectiveofe-portfolios.

ElectiveCourses(21Credits)InadditiontotheelectivesmadeavailableintheMCMspecializations,studentsmayapplyuptosixcreditsofcourseworkfromoutsideoftheSchoolofCommunicationandInformation.StudentsmaywishtosupplementtheirMCMprogramwithcoursesinBusiness,SocialSciences,orotherprofessionalschools.

ExperientialLearningAllMCMstudentscantakeuptosixcreditsofexperientiallearningaspartoftheirelectives.Inthesesupervisedexperiences,studentswillengagewithpractitionerstolearnskillsandperspectives.Gradesareassignedbasedonaself-evaluationbythestudentandasupervisor-evaluationbythepractitionerorfacultymember.Onlinestudentsmaycompletethisrequirementinanonlineopportunityorintheirlocalarea.Studentsmaysatisfythisrequirementthrough:

• Internships(150hoursfor3credits)inbusinesses,nonprofits,governmentagencies,and/orRutgersunits/departments.Studentsmaynotinternwheretheyareemployed.Studentsmaytaketwointernships(150hours/3credits)oroneinternship(300hours/6credits).

• ResearchPracticum-Studentsworkwithfacultyinexecutingcutting-edgeresearchprojects.Studentsmaytaketwopracticums(3creditseach)iftheywish.

• TeachingInternships--Studentsworkasassistantstoaprofessorinacourserelatedtotheirstudy.TeachingAssistantshipsmustbeapprovedbythecourseinstructor,theMCMDirector,andtheCommunicationDepartmentChair.Toapplyforateachinginternship,startwithanemailtotheMCMDirectorpriortothetermyouwishtoassist.

• Fellowship--StudentsapplyandareselectedasFellowsintheJohnson&JohnsonFellowshipprogram.Sixofthecreditsearnedinthisprogrammaybeappliedtodegreerequirements.Fellowshavetuitionpaidandreceiveastipend.Theyspend20hoursperweekonsiteatJ&J.

InternationalStudentsandExperientialLearning—Specialrulesapplytointernationalstudentsregardinginternshipsandfellowships.StudentsareresponsibletoknowwhattheirvisastatuspermitsinthewayofCPT(CurricularPracticalTraining)andotheropportunitiesofthisnature.InternationalstudentsshouldcheckwiththeInternationalServicesOfficeoncampusforadviceanddetailedorientation.TheMCMprogramwillmaintainalistofinternshipopportunities(aswellaspracticumandteachinginternships)intheprogramandoncampusthatwillpermitinternationalstudentstomeettheirexperientiallearningrequirement.

PoliciesRelatedtoSatisfyingDegreeRequirements

1. Studentsarerequiredtosuccessfullycomplete36creditstoearntheMCMdegreeincludingthecoreandelectiverequirements.

2. 9creditsareconsideredafull-timeload.12creditspertermisthemaximumcourseloadandrequiresapprovalbytheDirector.Studymayalsobepursuedpart-time.

3. Studentsarerequiredtosatisfydegreerequirementswithatleast30creditsincourseworkasidefromindividualizedexperiencessuchasindependentstudies,practicums,internshipsandthelike.

4. Fellowsmayapplynomorethan6creditsofFellowshipcredittowardssatisfying

thedegreerequirements.Theywillregisterforandparticipateinupto6creditsofFellowshipworkasanenhancementtotheirprogramexperience.

5. Studentsmayapplyuptoatotalto6creditsfromothergraduateprograms(bothinside/outsideofRutgers)totheirdegreerequirementuponapprovalofthecoursebytheprogramdirector.

a. TransferfromaRutgersProgram—arequesttocountacoursefromaRutgersgraduateprogramshouldbemadepriortoenrollment.TheprogramdirectorwilldeterminetheappropriatenessofapplyingthecoursetotheMCMdegree.GradesofsuchcoursesaretreatedthesameascourseswithintheMCMprogram.

b. TransferfromanotherUniversity’sProgram—arequesttocountacoursefromanotheruniversity’sgraduateprogramcanbemadeatanytimeduringthestudent’sprogramofstudy.Sucharequestshouldincludethesyllabusofthecoursetaken;atranscriptshowingthegradeearnedbythestudentinthecourse;andabriefexplanationofwhythestudentbelievesthecourseisapplicabletotheMCMdegree.SuchtransferswillbemadeonlyiftheDirectorfindsthecourserelevanttotheMCMprogram;thestudentearnedagradeofBorbetter;andthecoursewastakenwithinfiveyearsofentryintotheMCMprogram.ThestudentisresponsibletoensureallthestepsofthistransferprocessarecompletedandthatanappropriateformfortransferofcreditissignedandonfileintheStudentServicesOfficeofSC&I.

6. StudentsareexpectedtoearngradesofBorbetterintheircoursework.NomorethansixcreditsbearingagradeofCorC+andnocreditsbearingagradeofForINmaybeusedinmeetingtherequirementsfortheMCMdegree.

7. Studentsmaytakeamaximumof42creditstomeetdegreerequirementsfortheMCMdegreeincludingcreditsbearingthegradeofIN.

InternationalStudents

InternationalstudentsshouldpayattentiontothespecialproceduresrequiredbytheGraduateAdmissionsoffice.OnceinthecountryyoushouldparticipateintheprogramssponsoredbytheOfficeofRutgersGlobal(https://global.rutgers.edu/).Inparticular,westronglyencourageallinternationalMCMstudentstoparticipateinaRutgersGlobalorientationsession.Therearemanyspecificrulesandmuchinformationthatapplytointernationalstudents.PleasemakesureyoumakeuseoftheRutgersGlobalprograms,advisersandinformation.

SpecialOpportunities

MCMFellowshipsJohnsonandJohnsonFellows(whoarefundedthroughtheJohnson&JohnsonFellowshipProgram)willtake3creditsofFellowship(FellowsI,II,III,IV)eachsemesteroftheirfellowshipandmaycount6ofthesecreditstowardtheMCMelectivesrequirement.Thisisaverycompetitiveofferingandusuallyattractsmanyhighlyqualifiedapplicants.

ThesestudentsareselectedbyJohnsonandJohnsontobeFellowsandspend20hoursperweekatJ&Jaspartoftheirlearningexperience.Theyaregivenastipendplustuitionandgainvaluableexperience.AllMCMapplicantsareconsideredforJ&JFellowshipsaspartofouradmissionsprocess.Nominatedstudentsareaskedtosupplyaprofessionalresumeforfurtherconsideration.TypicalFellowplacementsareforfoursemesters–althoughareonasemester-by-semesterbasis,dependingonthestudent’sperformanceintheFellowshipandintheprogramandthecontinuingavailabilityofsupportfromthesponsor.StudentsmayapplyandbeconsideredforFellowshipsinsubsequentsemestersaftertheybegintheMCMProgram.

• MCMFellowInternshipI,II,III,IVarerequiredofstudentsawardedMCMFellowshipseachtermoftheirfellowshipforuptofourtermsor12credits.SixofthosecreditsmaybecountedtowardtheMCMdegreerequirements.

ToapplytobeaJohnsonandJohnsonFellowafterinitiallyjoiningtheMCMProgram:

• SendaprofessionalresumetotheMCMDirector• SendanemailstatingyourinterestinbeingconsideredforaFellowship

Anystudentwhoisselectedfora2-yearFellowshipafterstartingintheprogram,wouldstillbeexpectedtocompleteANOTHERfoursemestersofstudyandfellowship.1-yearFellowshipsarealsoavailablefromtimetotime.

RegisteringforClassesThecourseschedulefortheupcomingsemesterwillsoonbepostedonlineathttp://www.acs.rutgers.edu/soc.Oncethere,select"NewBrunswick"asthecampuslocation;"graduate"asthelevelofstudy;andselectthetermofstudy.Then,hit"submit."Onthenextpage,select"collegeavenue,""allgradcourses,"andselectinthedropdownmenuforsubjectarea"communicationandinformationstudies."Whenyouclickon"GetCourseSchedule"itwillbringupalltheoncampuscourseofferings.ScrolldowntothecoursesforMCMstudents(indicatedbythe"17"inthefarleftcolumn).You'llthenseethelistofofferingsfortheupcomingsemester.PleaseDONOTregisterforcoursesthatbeginwitha“16”(16:194:6XX).Thesearethedoctoralcourses
