League Rules for 2014
• Standard FIVB / USA Volleyball rules
Several exceptions for House matches to
encourage learning
Relatively lenient calls
• For “ol’schoolers”, standard rules now
include:
Rally scoring - each serve results in a point
Serves can touch net
Players can touch side of net but not tape
Double-touches on first contact
McLean Youth Volleyball 12
Service Rules
• Select and Travel
Standard rules apply
• Special House Rules
“Redo” if first serve missed
• Only on first attempt in the rotation
No foot faults
Maximum of 3 service wins in a row per
server
• After 3 consecutive points, service switches
to other team without point
ES players can serve 5 feet in from the
back line - both underhand and overhand
McLean Youth Volleyball 13
Scoring Rules
• Matches are 3 games to 25 points
Play 3 full games (NOT best of 3)
Start score at 4 to 4, end at 25 (win by 2)
Matches must end on time – winner of 3rd
game is team with most points on the hour
• For House, an extra point is awarded for
3 touches that result in an immediate win:
Discretion of the referee
For 6th & 7th-8th leagues: first 2 touches can
be bumps or sets; last touch must be an
overhead hit; For 4th-5th, any 3 touches.
Extra point only awarded if opposing team
does not legally return the ball into play
McLean Youth Volleyball 14
Substitution Rules - House
15
• Use “Continuous Substitution” - promotes equal
playing time
• Players on count and bench are one continuous
line-up
• With each clockwise rotation, two players rotate off
the court and two players from bench rotate on
• Start each subsequent game with players in the
same positions as the end of the previous game

Substitution Rules – Select/Travel
16
• Positional substitution
Coach has full discretion on who is substituted
During the game, a starting player and her
substitute must occupy the same rotation position
A player can only return to a game for the same
person who replaced her originally
• Coach must track positions and substitutions
• NO minimum playing time commitment
Team coaches determine playing time taking into
consideration individual, team and game dynamics
Some team roles require more playing time than
others (ex. setter)
Select and Travel players must agree to MYV
Playing Time Policy before joining the program.
• Libero allowed
Match Sequencing
1. Warm-ups for 10 minutes
• Coaches coordinate hitting and serving times
2. Referee calls for team captains
• Flip coin to determine first server and side
3. Volunteer parents assist as line judges
4. Teams shake hands under the net before
and after the match
5. Two (2) minutes between games
6. Timeouts permitted
• Two 30-second timeouts per team per game
7. Referees report wins-losses
REMINDER: Match must finish on the hour
McLean Youth Volleyball 17
McLean Youth Volleyball
1.Instruct players during
practices and matches
2.Communicate and work
with your parents • Utilize your parent
volunteers as necessary
3.Create practice plans
4.Setup and takedown nets
5.Address special
player/parent needs • Bring in Chuck if needed
6.Motivate and encourage
Head Coach Responsibilities
18
7. Focus on fundamental ball
control skills: serve, pass, set,
hit and *movement*
• Practices should reinforce these
skills
• Use drills that encourage as
many player “touches” as
possible
• Simulate game play over the net
• Winning is always nice, but “ping
pong” volleyball is not an ideal
way to master playing skills
8. Defer to referees in matches
9. Promote CHEERING!!
“iBerry Challenge”
• Fun competition in each league on the last
day of regular season – Saturday May 17
• The team that records the most 3-touches
during the match wins a gift certificate for
frozen yogurt at iBerry in McLean.
First place: $75
Second place: $50
• A delicious incentive
