1 9.65 marks the fifth year of existence of Maricn High
School. We, the Crusaders, out of deep respect for the founders
of the only Catholic High School in the South Bay area, dedicate
THE GAUNTLET to Reverend Joseph N. Stadler and Mr·. and
Mrs. Robert Egger. These first crusaders hold our sincere
gratitude for making the first co-institutional school in the San
Diego diocese a reality.

Memories of hard work and fun. Memories of games and dances. Memories of homework. Ugh! And Senior Ditch Day. Yea! Memories of a locker that wouldn't budge. Memories that grew, as did our campus. Memories not soon to be forgotten.
VOICES
Voices of the classroom and outside the classroom! Voices of teachers and cheerleaders! Voices at raUys and plays; voices of friends. And who can forget the voices on away game busses.
SIGHTS
Sights of heartbreak and thrills. Sights of report cards (Oh brother!) and winninlLlouchdowns. Sights of the Junior Prom and final exam papers Our Senior Tree (What Senior Tree?), not soon to be forgotten.
Alas. the voices, Sights and experiences of four years wane, but we are not soon free of the impressions they leave. Not soon free of our bonds to Marian. With us always are lasting memories, memories not soon to he forgotten.

The year 1964 was made brighter by the Homecoming Dance. Marian students rallied to the occasion representatively. Over a hundred students attended the festivities at the Coronado Womens' Club. Solt lights were reflected from the bay and the music cauld be heard for blocks. The evening was highlighted by the crowning of Clara Maruca as Homecoming Queen. Clara was elected by the members of the football team from a group of five seniors. It was obviously a difficult decision.

~uuin ra The hope of tomorrow, or rather next year, the Juniors are herein contained. Although they have recovered from the ignominy of lower classmen status, they bear new bruises, those from the buffets of responsibility . Their favorite sport seems to be jousting with windmills or iesting with the Front Office. We must admit that their Prom, play-parti
cipation, and academic antics show hope and even a certain amount of promise for their future as Seniors.

We shall begin at the bottom with the youthful countanences of our academic infants, the Freshmen. They bring vigor and vitality to the campus, and what else? They bounce about the compound bringing joy, chaos, and essence of surf-suds to class and activity. Marian welcomes them and wishes them speedy progress and rapid growth into our non
pareil Senior Sophistication.

Sitting from left are: Tom Leonard, Maureen King, Mike McCormack, Clara Maruca, Mike Hasegawa, Cathy Ursettie, Sister Mary Caroline, Sue $oppe, Bill Bryant, Olivia Reyes, Greg Van Boom, and Mary Ellen Kelleher.
The Page staff, under the leadership of co-editors Bill Babic and Donna
Lockridge, produced Marian' s quarterly news magazine for the students .
As Marian took its place in the community the Page expanded its scope
to include news from off.campus and commentary on events affecting
students. Strong and sometimes sarcastic observations from the Page
evoked equally vehement replies from some stu~ents.
The Page combined the customary school newspaper and literary maga·
zine into an eight to twelve page magazine. The Page staff strove to
incor porate the best of the two media, factual news and excellence in
style.

INJURIES MAR CRUSADER GRID SEASON
Scores of injuries, both minor and serious, turned last year ' s perfect league record completely around as Marian ' s Crusaders strugg led through on unhealthy season of no wins and five lo sses in league ploy and a tNa and six record over all. But there is a reason for everything and this is no exception. Marian ' s first game was indicitive of many in the fact that a broken ankle, a broken arm, and a serious concussion joined forces to sideline three · Crusaders. And this was just the start. The final game at Ramona sow Marion stort a hybrid team of second and third stringers, with a smattering of J. V. players, in on emergency substitution, plus a very small portion of the original starters.
In nanleague play the Crusaders opened their season against LaJolla Country Day wi1J, an en· couraging 35-0 romp. Fun and games ended here as Marion was stopped by Calexico J)·6, but bounced back the next week with the usual win over Son Miguel, 20·0.
The tables were turned in league pi cry as the Crusaders were overburdened with injuries, and dropped every game. Poway started things rolling with a crushing 33·0 defeat of the Marian eleven. The following week Army·Navy's six points accounted for the second league loss. Carls· bad followed suit tumbling Marian 33·0, during the homecoming festivities. Son Marcos piled on the fourth defeat with a decisive 26·6 thrashing. Ramona topped it off with a quite unexpected 20-0 field day.

J.V. PLACES FOURTH IN FIRST PALOMAR SEASON
The somewhat less publized J.Y. team of the charging Crusaders, salvaged 0 fairly better accord in League play thon our Varsity team (two wins to three losses) but concluded with the identical 2-6 total of the Varsity.
The season jumped off to a flying start with Q gratifying 18-2 vi story over Saint Agustine' s sophomore team. Mar Visto' s 36-0 win over the Crusaders was followed by the first game of League play.
Poway edged out Marian in a thrilling 7-6 cliff-hanger. This fired up our Blue and Gold team, for the next week they evened the season record with a convincing 14-0 over Army-Navy, Carlsbad and Sln Marcos tacked on two sucessive losses outscoring our Crasuaders 31~12 and 27~O res~ pectively. The season closed on a happy note, however, with a spectacular 14~O victory on the cold Ramona field as Marian surprised the Bulldogs .

CRUSADER REBOUNDS
Man should not judge a book by its cover. Ne ither should a team be analyzed on the basis of its record alone. Marian Hjgh ~ s basketball team finish ed the season with an overall record of 9 wins and 21 losses and a mark of 5 wins and 5 losses in league action which netted them a tie for third place in the rugged Palomar League .
This record was attained under the trying conditions of playing much larger schools and
of having no school gymnasium in which to practice and play games. The spirit, drive, and hustle wh ich was this team ' s trademark enabled them to overcome these obstacles and the resulting fine record is a tribute indeed to the coaches, Mr. Chapman and Mr. Keyes, and the players on the team.
Bill Youmans, who won the league' s scoring title - setting a school record in the processand a place on the first team of the "All PJ lomar League " team, Richard Monschein, who wa~ an all-league .eHonorable Mention ", Jerry Loffredo, Terry Arthur, and Bill Bryant will be lost through graduation. However, prospects for next year look even brighter with such fine players as Jay Q1Neill, John Warner, Dennis Fortier, David Ramm, Bill Kelley, David Clingan, Tom Wagner, and Joe Garry, ready to take over the helm.

Crusader Pinch-hits
If a team could win a championship on the basis of hustle alone, then the crusaders certainly would be the champions of the Palomar League. However, experience is also needed to win titles and this year Marian had only four seniors on its baseball squad. Center~fielder Bill Youmans, catcher Gabriel torres, and infielders Surgio Moron and Pat Hamilton will be lost through graduation and Mar·ian will be sorely pressed to replace ballplayers of their outstanding cal iber.
Nevertheless, hustle was the "main key that enabled the Crusaders to record an overall mark 0(9 wins and 11 losses ~nd a record of 9 wins and 6 losses in league action which gave Marian a tie for .second place in the Palomar League.
However, prospects for next year look much brighter since "there will then be six seniors, three juniors, and three sophmores returning with letters. Hard .. hitting outfielders Howard Mees, Richard Brown, and Mike McCormack, along with first-sacker Bob Hill, short-stop Danny Tello, and third-baseman Pete Zdunczyk will be back for their ,final season next year. Infielders Roberto Gutierrez and Jerry Herrera will be ready for action "along with pitchers Oscar.Parra, Jake Stohler, Tom Stuart, and Steve Baja, who is also a promising hitter.
Coach Keyes deserves s ~cial praise for his work wit~ the team. If experience is the best teacher, then Coach Keyes must be" Mr. Experience himself, for he is entitled to a great deal of credit for moulding Marian's ballplayers into a great team. The players he has developed will continue to win gomes for Morian in the future.
Oscar Parra fires his fast ball. Gabriel Torres blocks home plate.
