The Kansas City & St. Louis Chapters of the NTMA were well represented in Washington DC by a team of members who made the trip to attend the NTMA/PMA “One Voice” legislative conference May 8th and 9th.

Those making the trip were: Dick & Rick Schwind of Continental Tool, Craig Schroer of Unitech Inc, Greg Carr of Deco Tool Supply & Tom Goodpasture of Pride Manufacturing. The group joined with Herb Homeyer of Homeyer Tool & Mike Mittler of Mittler Bro. from the St. Louis Chapter to make visits to both Kansas & Missouri Representatives.

During the-two day event the group visited three US Senators and eight US House Representatives. Issues discussed focused on the serious condition of the trained skilled workers for our industry.

Currently manufacturing suffers with a 600,000 skilled worker shortage nationally with 2.7 million expected to retire in the next 10 years. Taxation and regulation that burdens American manufacturers and

makes the US the most expensive place in the world to operate was also discussed. The EPA’s current discussion and consideration of nickel as a hazardous substance was also a hot topic. The team came back feeling that they had a number of good conversations. Manufacturing and the machining industry is being looked to as a solution to create jobs and being welcomed by both sides of the aisle to discuss the possibilities unlike many past years.

HF Rubber Machinery (HFRM), Inc., Topeka, Kansas, has installed a new Hurco DCX32 vertical gantry machining center.

The 52-year-old firm offers design, manufacturing, maintenance and rebuilding services to the rubber processing industry (tire and technical rubber goods) worldwide. Examples of equipment the firm produces includes rubber mixers, extruders, mills, material handling/feeding systems, tire building machines and tire curing presses.

The new Hurco vertical gantry machining center, purchased from Gage Machine Tool, was needed to keep up with HFRM’s growth and replaced an older piece of equipment. It features WinMax software; a 10K-50 taper spindle; 40-tool ATC; 126” x 82.7” x 36.2” capacity; through spindle coolant and Renishaw part and tool probes. The machine is equipped with a 4th axis for 3D profiling.

“The Hurco DCX32 is a great fit for our technical and budget requirements,” stated HFRM’s Christian Gerwien, VP of North American Operations. “We already had two Hurco machining centers and have been happy with the equipment and Gage Machine Tool’s service. The WinMax twin screen control/software is a great feature. We are seeing dramatic improvement in our efficiency and turnaround due to the machine adding a needed work envelope and 3D profile milling to our capabilities.”

HFRM is ISO certified and is a division of the HF Mixing Group, a global leader in rubber processing equipment and machinery. The firm operates in a 46,000-sq.-ft. facility with 55 employees.

For anyone that experienced the Great Depression of the 1930s, this recession has to bring back some similarities. For instance one might recall a statement by Sir Winston Churchill, who usually didn’t criticize the New Deal policies. Here are his comments from Great Contemporaries, published in 1939.

“The disposition to hunt down rich men as if they were noxious beasts is a very attractive sport.” But “confidence is shaken and enterprise chilled, and the unemployed queue up at the soup kitchens or march out to the public works with ever growing expense to the taxpayer and nothing more appetizing to take home to their

families than the leg or wing of what was once a millionaire...

“It is indispensable to the wealth of nations and to the wage and life standards of labor, that capital and credit should be honored and cherished partners in the economic system...”

Winston may have been a bit over the top, but he did make his point. Capitalism, or free enterprise, has always had its detractors and the government did disparage the rich during the Depression. However, the unprecedented growth in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries and our high standard of living had pretty much held the government planners at bay.

When the USSR collapsed after a 70-year experiment, and China moved to a semi-capitalistic economy, it would seem to prove to the world that “central planning” had failed. So, who needed to defend the free market now? Not the entrepreneurs. They were too busy starting companies, or going bankrupt and starting again, to worry about their public image.

Unfortunately, beginning as early as the 1960s, even those with rising incomes and comfortable lives seemed to feel guilty about companies making profits. By the 1970s, “profit” was becoming a dirty word.

To make it worse, if a company declared a 50% profit, the person on the street often assumed this meant the company was making 50 cents profit on each sales dollar. They didn’t understand that many businesses operated on a margin of 3% to 15%.

Most high schools, colleges and universities never explained how a free-enterprise system (and those profits) can work for the benefit of everyone. Instead, they often added to the confusion

by focusing on the under-privileged, emphasizing “fairness” and noting that capitalism always involves a selfish motive.

Still being emphasized were stories of the “Robber Barons” in the 1800s, the “strike breakers” and the deplorable conditions for miners up into the 1930s. (No matter that times have changed and union workers have been among the highest paid employees in the U.S. for years.)

By the 1980s, businesspeople were recognizing the fact that even with America’s success in meeting the needs of its people, they still had to defend the need for profits. But, always customer-conscious, only a few business leaders wanted to discuss the importance of free enterprise at their community meetings, school career days or even when meeting with their own employees.

Today, after too many trusted banks, brokerage houses, mortgage companies and real estate firms have helped to made a shambles of our economy, it’s no wonder even more people are skeptical of the free markets. And, those Boards of Directors that approved obscene bonuses for incompetent CEOs, didn’t restore confidence either.

Over the years, we’ve said time and again that capitalism only works when it’s based on honesty.

Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes, wrote an article in the August 20th issue: “Recovery Drag: The Age of Cheats”. He starts with steroids in sports and moves on.

“Cheating in sports is but a single facet of the cheating that’s rampant today in everything from education to finance to government. The financial meltdown of 2008 was a bonfire of bad behavior on all sides. Fannie Mae is built on the lie that every American is capable of paying a mortgage. Mortgage lenders steered victims into loans they could never pay. But the victims were not all innocent. Many

lied on loan applications, claiming incomes they never had.”

Karlgaard goes on to note that the U.S. government fudges its numbers, politicians call reduced growth rates “spending cuts,” and big banks take unnecessary risks and then cry for help when they don’t work out.

When this recession started, Luke Johnson, Financial Times, wrote “The first casualty of a downturn is truth.” He noted that, “Desperation compromises the ethics...talk of moral principles from media pundits and academics means little if your company faces bankruptcy or you face the sack. As Adlai Stevenson, the American politician, said: ‘A lie is an abomination unto the Lord, and a very present help in times of trouble.’”

Our point is that neither the government nor the free market can operate efficiently if their plans and rules are based on false information. Or, if the nation is encouraged to get into class warfare. Re-storing trust in Congress, the President and business is the key to our recovery.

The good news is that there are still thousands of fine companies, corporations and Mom and Pop shops that have always done the honest thing and they’re ready to expand if only someone will provide realistic, stable rules and laws that won’t change with each whim of the President or Congress.

Millennium Machine & Tool (MMT), Inc., Newton, Kansas, has recently completed an expansion and installed three pieces of Haas CNC equipment

The company, which is a full-service machine shop, started in 1998 in an 1800-sq.-ft. building.

Today, the company operates with 30 employees working two shifts in a 38,000-sq.-ft. facility in Newton (just north of Wichita).

The new Haas equipment includes a VF-7/40 high speed VMC with wireless probing, a 5-axis trunnion table and a 84” x 32” x 30” work envelope; a VF-2SSYT super speed VMC with wireless probing and a 5-axis trunnion table and a SL 20 CNC turning center with barfeeder.

The equipment and expansion were needed to keep up with the company’s growth and to diversify its offerings to attract new customers. The 8,000-sq.-ft. expansion provides additional production space and an inspection room.

The new machine tools bring the company’s CNC machine tool count up to 23. All but two are made by Haas. These include 6 CNC lathes, 11 CNC vertical mills, 4 horizontal machining centers and a mill-turn center. The company also has a sinker EDM.

“We have been very satisfied with our Haas equipment,” stated Kris Wondra, co-owner and founder. “The quality is good, their standard prices include many extras and the service is excellent.”

MMT works with most metals and plastics and can handle everything from prototypes to large runs.

“We work hard to deliver quality work, on time and at a good price,” commented Nick Messer, director of sales and marketing. “We are very flexible and can implement changes quickly.”

MMT serves numerous industries in mid-America including: motorcycle; automotive; agriculture; aerospace; recreation; racing; firearms and injection molding.

Full-service polishing is also offered.

The company works with SolidWorks, Catia and MasterCAM software and is ISO and Aerospace AS9100 certified.

Millennium Machine & Tool can be contacted at: (316) 282-0884; Fax (316) 283-6678; 900 W. First Street, Newton, Kansas 67114: [email protected]; www.mmtinc.net.
