In many ways, community colleges are built to partner. Strong community partnerships with high schools, technical schools, four-year colleges and universities, business, industry and civic organizations enables our College to meet

residents where they are to provide a customized approach to education and training. Our strategic plan through 2010 places an emphasis on extending community and strategic partnerships by making it one of our six guiding goals.

Partnerships with community organizations, such as the Pottstown Health and Wellness Foundation, enable us to send our students out into the community, boosting the capacity of local non-profi t organizations to fulfi ll their missions while training leaders of the future through a service learning initiative. In 2008, each of the eight students in this initiative spent 220 hours with their community partners, which included Ken Crest, Tri-County YWCA, Pottstown Police Athletic League and Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area.

The College’s strong partnership with the Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board has helped to establish our Center for Workforce Development as the primary training and grant management resource for businesses in the region. In addition to our partnerships on the non-credit side, a new industry partnership with Rohm and Haas, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, allows our biotechnology students to work side-by-side with researchers and scientists in the fi elds of bio and nanotechnology.

Our partnerships with high schools, technical schools and four-year colleges and universities extend access to higher education through dual credit and transfer programs. The College’s University Center is thriving at our West Campus in Pottstown, with strong enrollment at Albright College and Temple University. The College’s Automotive Technology program, housed at the Mobile Air Conditioning Society in Lansdale and Pottstown High School, offers dual credit opportunities for high school students while they work toward an associate’s degree in their fi eld.

Our donors are among the College’s most important partners, and they are featured in this special issue of big Dreams on pages 15-23. Helping students to succeed is the core inspiration for all that we do at the College, and our donors continue to renew and inspire the College community with their investment in our mission.

Through its 44 years, Montgomery County Community College has touched tens of thousands of students and community members in some meaningful way. I encourage you to connect with us in partnership as we continue to serve our community.

Sincerely,

Karen A. StoutPresident

Assistant Professor of Psychology Diane Haar, Adjunct Lecturer Mindi Raggi and POWER Paraprofessional Mae Harden gave a presentation about the College’s POWER Program at the National Organization for Human Services in Tucson, Ariz. in October. Their presentation was titled “A Re-Entry Program for Persons in Mental Health Recovery.” POWER, which stands for Partnership On Work Enrichment and Readiness, is a 14-week educational

program for people in mental health recovery.

Instructor of English Dana Murray-Resente was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Writers Conference, a non-profi t organization whose purpose is to bring together writers for instruction, counsel, fellowship, and the exchange of ideas. Dana has chaired the College’s annual Writers Conference for the past two years.

Suzanne Holloman, Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, has been elected to serve as chairperson for the Pennsylvania Commission on Community Colleges Workforce Development Committee for next year.

A s he watched the sloped orange rooftops of northeastern France turn into the step-gable style in Belgium, and heard the

Latin- and Germanic-based languages turn Slavic, Assistant Professor of Geography Wayne Brew saw his studies rise in front of him like the dark hills of Bohemia.

For Brew, the study of cultural geography seeks to know why there are particular patterns between countries and cultures. This summer he got to see some of those patterns in person as one of 30 community college instructors who were sent on the two-week, fi ve-country European History and Culture Sampler tour organized by Community Colleges for International Development, Inc.

Through the Gladys and Raymond Pearlstine Chair, Montgomery County Community College’s Foundation sponsored Brew’s trip. The Chair is a permanent fund at the College’s Foundation, to be used “for activities that improve the quality of life for faculty and rejuvenate them in professional ways.” Gladys Pearlstine was a charter member and former chair of the College’s Board of Trustees,

and she and her husband were lifelong supporters of the College.Brew’s trip was a natural fi t to his study of geography—and not

just because he has hundreds of photos that will help educate his students. Brew hopes that his experience will help him teach geography scholars what he tries to every year—to think a little less ethnocentrically.

“When you see things in the world, when you look at the geography and history of them, you might fi nd maybe we’re not so different from other people,” said Brew.

While there are both differences and similarities that are important to learn, there are also those that simply please the senses, like the innumerable European culinary delights Brew tasted that vary distinctly kilometer by kilometer.

“I’m very lucky,” said Brew. Not just because the other tour attendees and the bus driver and guide were great travel companions, and not just because he was able to visit so many places he never thought he’d go, but because the teacher was able to learn something profound about the world.

“I think when you travel there’s a two-way street,” he said. “As we were leaving, the person who organized the trip from the United States said, by going to these places you’ll really get to learn a lot about culture. By learning about other cultures, you learn about your own.”

When Liberal Studies student Sara Minkler enrolled in a history course last summer, she did not expect to make an impact on one of the oldest non-profi t organizations

in the Pottstown community. However, after being selected for a paid service learning internship through a grant from the Pottstown Health and Wellness Foundation (see page 5), Sara was charged with chronicling the history of the Tri-County YWCA as part of its 100-year anniversary celebration.

Armed with more than 50 scrapbooks dating back to 1913, Sara developed a graphical presentation of pivotal moments in the YWCA’s history, including the impact the organization had on World War II and the Civil Rights Movement.

“I wanted to help people connect with the YWCA and to show how the organization’s work has evolved over the past 100 years,” she said.

Sara also put together an oral history of the YWCA through personal interviews, and she has written an article for local media outlets, such as the Pottstown Mercury. The experience has enabled her to learn more about the

various methods used in researching history, a skill that will help her in her ultimate goal to study constitutional law after she transfers to a four-year school.

She has also prepared for her intended fi eld of study by completing an internship with Senator Rick Santorum and volunteering with the 2004 presidential campaign. In addition, Sara currently serves as the President of the Student Government Association at the College’s West Campus.

After she graduates from Montgomery County Community College in the spring, Sara hopes to transfer to Bucknell University, having completed the Bucknell Community College Scholars Program at the university over the summer.

“I’ve had so many wonderful opportunities at the College,” she said. “I enjoy serving the student body and representing the school while enhancing my leadership skills for the future.”

Second-year Dental Hygiene students Jennifer Aponte and Danielle Wilson received $1,000 scholarships from the American Dental Hygienists Association Institute for Oral Health (IOH). The national foundation was created by dental hygienists to provide fi nancial assistance to dental hygiene students who can demonstrate a commitment to further the discipline of dental hygiene through academic achievement, professional excellence and a desire to improve the public’s oral health. The students competed with Dental Hygiene students nationwide for this award.

For the fi rst time, the College’s Internet radio station, Montco Radio, was nominated for four awards by music and events publishing company College Media Journal (CMJ). The station competed nationally with 375 other stations for nominations in the categories of “Best Use of the Web” and “Best Use of Limited Resources.” Communication student and Montco Radio Station Manager Aaron Henry was also nominated in the categories of “In it for the Music” and “Most Fun.”

Henry is pictured on the right with Assistant Station Manager Brian Nichols.

S ervice Learning is the process by which students apply what they learn in the classroom to community service opportunities. Increasing numbers of faculty in higher education are incorporating the practice of service learning into their curriculum. To help facilitate this growth, Montgomery County Community College received a grant of more than $25,000 from the

Pottstown Area Health and Wellness Foundation to establish a service learning initiative between area non-profi t organizations and the College’s students.

Criminal Justice Instructor Steve Schmitz took on the role of project manager for the service learning grant initiative, noting that the role of service learning “is the fi rst step to collaboration between community agencies.”

“The 25 years I spent on the police force helped me look at many society issues as multi-faceted problems. Police offi cers are only the fi rst step, but social service agencies often take over from there,” he said.

Each of the College’s eight service learning interns was partnered with a community organization and faculty mentor. The program’s fi rst-year partners included the Pottstown Police Athletic League, the Tri-County YWCA, Ken Crest and the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area (SRHA). The students are required to put in 220 hours of service, and each internship is linked to a classroom experience through refl ection and application of content.

For example, three students from Instructor Tracy Brown’s Psychology course used the survey methods they learned in class during their internships with the SRHA, during which they took surveys of how people utilize the Schuylkill River. The students then analyzed the data using applications from their Psychology course to answer questions such as, “what motivates an individual to complete a survey?”

According to Dr. Dean Foster, Vice President and West Campus Administrative Offi cer, the goals of the service learning initiative are two-fold. “The goals of the project are to support the infrastructure of area non-profi t organizations and to better prepare future leaders for area non-profi t organizations,” he said. “The students who participate in service learning will not only progress as future managers in area non-profi t organizations, but they are assisting their respective agencies now in meeting the agencies’ organizational goals and better serving their clientele.”

Emerging Partner: Central Montco Technical High School

The College recently announced its “emerging partnership” with Central Montco Technical High School (CMTHS), located in Plymouth Meeting. The College relocated the hands-on kitchen component of its Chef Apprenticeship associate degree program to CMTHS, making use of the high school’s state-of-the-art commercial/instructional kitchen and industry-standard equipment. The College also offers 10 dual credit courses to CMTHS students in the areas of biotechnology, computer aided drafting, culinary studies, early childhood education and psychology, as well as 14 adult continuing education courses during the evenings in subjects that include Middle Eastern cooking, fl oral design, yoga, and Adobe Illustrator, Flash and Photoshop for Mac.

West Chester University Partnership

The College has entered into a dual admissions and core-to-core agreement with West Chester University of Pennsylvania to facilitate the transfer process. The partnership enables students who graduate from the College with an Associate in Arts degree or an Associate in Science degree and a grade point average of at least 2.0 to enter West Chester with junior (third year) status. In addition to the dual admissions agreement, the two schools entered into a program-to-program agreement in the area of Nursing and will continue the program-to-program agreement in Early Childhood Education, which was originally signed in 2004.

Norristown Resource Center

In October, the College opened the Norristown Resource Center, located on the fi rst fl oor of One Montgomery Plaza, directly across the street from the Montgomery County Courthouse. The Resource Center enables the College to provide residents of Montgomery County and the Borough of Norristown with greater access to an array of educational services that promote, support, and inspire academic pursuits and lifelong learning by reducing barriers to enrollment and fostering goal attainment. Open to the public from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, the Center’s staff works individually with students and potential students to help them identify their educational, employment and life goals in order to provide a customized program to meet those goals.

After producing industry technicians for nearly 20 years, Montgomery County Community College’s Automotive Technology program

continues to thrive, bolstered by both a federal grant and partnerships with area organizations.

Last year, the College was awarded a $1.3 million critical job training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, which aims to invest in growing industries. The grant has enabled the College to more than double the number of students that study the auto tech business, and expand its location and enhance its equipment.

Still, the future of industries such as auto tech does not just rely on grants, but on benefi cial community partnerships. In the College’s program, classes are held at MACS Worldwide (Mobile Air Conditioning Society) in Lansdale and at Pottstown High School.

The program also benefi ts from its relationship

with the Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia. “The Dealer’s Association keeps us current, and makes sure we’re putting out the products—students—we need to service cars today,” said Joe Picco, the College’s Automotive Technology Grant Manager.

The group, the oldest of its kind in the country, is made up of more than 200 automotive dealers. It helps the College refi ne its curriculum, buy equipment necessary for current standards, and essentially guide the Auto Tech program through the industry.

“The Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia is making an investment, and in turn, it will continually benefi t from trained technicians,” said Picco. “People will be driving cars forever.”

But exactly what type of car will surely change, and the College seeks to stay current by continually updating its program, like incorporating hybrid car technology.

Still, the nuts and bolts of auto tech education will continue at the College, through successful partnerships and supportive funding.

“As long as there is demand out there, we can continue to train,” Picco said. “The purpose of the money is to get us on the map.”

Students DevelopBiotechnology Skillsin INDUSTRY HOT-BED

by Whitney L. Etter

Like many emerging students who love the sciences, Jacek Dob found himself dissatisfi ed with available biology and medical laboratory technician programs. “Then I met Dr. Rehfuss, and

she just lit a spark in me,” said Dob.Dob was one of the many students at Montgomery County

Community College in the advanced sciences initiative started by Linda Rehfuss, current Dean of Math, Science and Technology.

“The program prepares students who want to pursue further education at other colleges,” said Dobs. “The strong background in biology, chemistry and biotechnology is an advantage in the fi eld.”

The initiative is part of a consortium of colleges looking to tailor their programs to needs of the advanced sciences industry. More specifi cally, it’s designed to increase student interest in biotechnology and related fi elds.

“Not many people really know what biotechnology is or what they can do with a degree in biotechnology,” said Kevin Lampe, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology and Biotechnology Program Coordinator. “We live in the industry hot bed, and there’s a need for well-trained technicians.”

“Most of the research in biotechnology is now focused on fi nding drugs that are benefi cial to society. Being a biotechnologist opens up a door for you to be a part of that,” added Dob, who currently works at Johnson

Matthey Pharmaceuticals as a production technician II.Through a recent grant from the National Science

Foundation, the College has begun working with the pharmaceutical company Rohm and Hass on a project called “The College-Company Connection: Bringing Real-World, Work Experience to Students through Strategic Partnerships.” The collaboration enables students to work directly with Rohm and Hass scientists on pre-market testing of biotech-relevant product lines, with a bulk of the work being performed in the College’s own biotechnology laboratory.

In addition to industry experience, scholarships, direct transfer agreements and accelerated master’s programs are only some of the incentives offered through the College’s advanced sciences department.

“All the students who have gone through the program have gone on to higher education or found employment in the biotechnology fi eld,” said Lampe. “We have gone a long way to set up a focused path for students who want to pursue this career.”

Montgomery County Community College

is helping high school students

add new meaning to the term multi-tasking.

The College’s dual enrollment program enables

current high school and home-schooled students

to earn college credits beginning at age 15. Dual

enrollment students may also fulfill certain high

school graduation requirements if their high

school is a dual credit partner. The College has

20 high school partners to date, with several

other agreements in the works.

Getting ahead in credits is not the only

benefit for dual enrollment students, however.

According to Cheryl Taylor-Mearhoff, Director

of Dual Enrollment Initiatives, by taking a few

college-level courses while still in the familiar

setting of high school, students ease into the

transition from high school to college and learn

first-hand the keys to success in college. When

those students matriculate into college, they

do so with greater confidence in their ability

to succeed and, statistically, outperform their

peers—which also makes them more appealing

candidates during their application process.

Financially, dual enrollment can bring down

the overall cost of college, as some high schools

receive grant money to subsidize the courses.

Some high schools absorb the cost themselves,

and in the cases where approved high school

instructors are teaching the courses, students

can pay as little as $25 per credit.

“In each partnership, the students are

the real winners, with increased access to

higher education, more collaborative academic

communities, and enhanced student support

resources,” said Taylor-Mearhoff.

Montgomery County Community College Foundation’s Courage to Create Capital Campaign has raised more than $1 million and has begun asking the public to

contribute to the effort. The private giving campaign aims to raise $3 million to match $3 million in state funding to meet increasing enrollment demands in the arts at the College through the preservation, renovation and expansion of the Fine Arts Center, affectionately known as the Art Barn.

“This effort is important in creating a learning destination for students pursuing degrees in the fi ne arts as well as for community members of all ages who come to us for lifelong learning opportunities in the arts,” said Dr. Karen A. Stout, President.

Located at the College’s Central Campus in Blue Bell, the Fine Arts Center is a reuse of the barn and silos of the farm that provided the acreage for Montgomery County Community College. The more than $6 million project will renovate and expand the existing structure from 10,000 to 26,000 square feet. The additional space is sorely needed as demand for studio time and courses in the visual fi ne arts (sculpture, ceramics, drawing and painting) has outstripped the College’s ability to provide them.

Growth in the enrollment in Fine Arts courses has exceeded 35 percent over the last fi ve years. The Fine Arts Center serves 3,500 students and community members annually through degree programs and continuing education art classes for local residents.

The additional space will also provide for the addition of art history education and expansion into new media such as woodworking, jewelry, metals and other three-dimensional arts. Central to the completion of the Fine Arts Center is a lobby gallery and reception area of dramatic design that will showcase the work of local, regional and national artists to complement other smaller college exhibition areas.

A Sculpture Garden will be located near the wetlands and other beautifully-restored rustic areas adjacent to the Fine Arts Center. The garden will feature the steel and metal sculptures of one of Philadelphia’s most famous public-space artists Leon Sitarchuk. The Sculpture Garden and other landscaped areas will provide solitude for individual, quiet refl ection, as well as gathering spaces for students and community special events.

Many opportunities remain for individuals or businesses to add their name to the project, even the entire building. For more information or to contribute to the Courage to Create Capital Campaign, contact Tina Hennessey at 215-641-6534 or [email protected].

Campaign Enters PUBLIC PHASE at $1 million mark

The Courage to Create Capital Campaign for the Fine Arts Center received two leadership gifts of $25,000 each recently. Frances and James Maguire awarded a $25,000 grant to the Campaign through the Maguire Foundation. In addition, an anonymous donor, who has already made a $15,000 gift to the Campaign, made a second leadership gift of $25,000.

TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation awarded a $7,500 grant to the College’s Foundation, which was received in September. The grant will fund the annual Commerce Bank Scholarship and will sponsor the Young Arts Explorers program in the

College’s Lively Arts Series. The Commerce Bank Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in business or fi nance. The Young Arts Explorers Lively Arts Series for children features multi-cultural performances in dance, music and theatre that refl ect a global perspective on culture and diversity. The program serves thousands of elementary-school and middle-school students annually, with a special focus on underserved populations. In an effort to reach underserved students, the College provides bus transportation to the performances, a cost that would be prohibitive for these students and their schools. TD Banknorth’s sponsorship will

ensure that the College continues to offer free transportation to the young students who most need this service.

Gerry Timlin, an Irish folk singer, musician, entertainer and proprietor of the Shanachie Irish Pub and Restaurant in Ambler, will perform “An Evening of Irish Music & Dance,” Friday, March 6 at 8 p.m. Proceeds from this special concert performance will benefi t the Courage to Create Capital Campaign for the College’s Fine Arts Center. General admission tickets are $25. For reservations, visit www.mc3.edu/livelyarts or call 215-641-6518.

Six of the College’s best and brightest alumni returned to their roots in October to inspire a new generation of students. The College is pleased to recognize its

2008 Alumni Hall of Fame inductees. While majoring in Business and later Finance and Marketing,

Marcia Moll Barone, class of 1982, recalls that her fondest memories are of the time she spent volunteering at the College’s Children’s Center and tutoring bilingual students in writing. It’s no surprise that she returned to the fi eld of education as a teacher, advisor and trustee with The Perkiomen School. Marcia is committed to volunteerism, as the former project coordinator and a current member of the PERK-UP Steering Committee, a grassroots, public-private effort whose mission is to identify options and opportunities for the Greater Upper Perkiomen Valley.

Lt. Kevin McKeon, class of 2000, is the Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division of the Norristown Police Department. He also serves as Commander of the Norristown Special Weapons and Tactical Team and as the Law Enforcement Coordinator of the Norristown Weed and Seed Program. He began his law enforcement career in 1981 as a patrol offi cer, and he has held a variety of posts since that time, including Team Leader and Commander of the Norristown Police SWAT Team and Commander of the Tactical Patrol Unit.

Bill Lowa, class of 1974, is the President of The Lowa Group, which handles all types of personal, commercial, and benefi ts insurance. He began his career as a police offi cer, graduating from the College with a degree in Police Science in 1974. He spent fi ve years in law enforcement before a leg injury required him to retire from the force. Prior to purchasing the Hallman Insurance Agency in 1985, Bill held a variety of positions with Erie Insurance, including fraud and fi eld investigator and district manager. He joined the College’s Foundation Board of Directors in

1997, and served as chairperson for several years. A strong advocate for education, George Marin, class of 1971,

serves on the College’s Advisory Committee for the Computer Information Systems program and is a member of the College’s Foundation Board of Directors. He also recently made a generous gift to the College’s Advanced Technology Center, and he is active at several other schools and colleges, serving on their advisory committees and foundations. George is the President of Data Tech Solutions, a publicly-held software company that supports the food retail and distribution industries.

Patricia A. Nunan, class of 1989, is the President and Owner of Lifestyles Design, a design and building fi rm that specializes in living spaces that allow people to stay in their homes and live independently as they age. She started the company in 2001 after spending 15 years in the businesses of design and construction. Patricia served on the College’s Alumni Association Board of Directors for seven years, and she is the Chairperson and Past President of the BucksMont chapter of the National Association of the Remodelers Industry; Secretary of the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

A member of the College’s Board of Trustees, James Vlahos, Jr., class of 1985, is the President of Vlahos-Dunn Insurance and of Sunnyville Partners II, a real estate development partnership. In addition to holding an associate’s degree from the College, he is a Certifi ed Professional Insurance Agent (CPIA), and he served 10 years in the U.S. Air Force. James is a past recipient of the New Hanover Township Distinguished Service Accommodation and the Boyertown YMCA Leadership and Dedication Award, and he has served as a member of the Boyertown YMCA Chairman’s Roundtable and of the Capital Campaign Board for the development of the YMCA’s New Hanover Branch.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRFinancial markets in the United States and around the world have been stressed, strained, shaken and humbled in the past year. Some of the most storied names in the banking, investment and insurance industries have disappeared from the fi nancial lexicon, as a result of merger, bailout or failure. The effects of this turmoil have been felt at every level of American society, making us cautious in our spending and at times concerned for our fi nancial futures.

Despite all of this, we continue to give charitably and responsibly to the causes that matter most to us. In reviewing the depth and breadth of contributions made this past year to the College’s Foundation, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community. We continue to receive support from a broad base of individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations, in recognition of our mission to support the college and its students, and we are most appreciative of each and every gift.

While the year behind us has been at times both daunting and rewarding, the year ahead of us is most certainly fi lled with challenges. At a time when some may be prone to scale back their charitable giving, the need for scholarship and programmatic support will be rising here at the College. Many of us will be asked to make diffi cult decisions about the allocation of resources in our personal and professional lives. As you are contemplating those decisions, please remember the substantial benefi ts that derive from your support of Montgomery County Community College.

We are fortunate here in Montgomery County to have one of the pre-eminent community colleges in the nation. Our students enjoy a broad array of choices for coursework and fi elds of study, delivered by an award-winning faculty. The College itself, at both the Central and West campuses, serves as a cultural and community focal point. By choosing to provide fi nancial support to the College, we offer the benefi ts of education to those who may not otherwise be able to afford it … we help to train our workforce and cultivate tomorrow’s leaders … and we make our community stronger, brighter and better prepared for the future.

Gwynllan SocietyIn 1972, the College moved to the site of a former dairy farm, Gwynllan Farm in Blue Bell. Like the farm, members of the

Gwynllan Society provide the foundation for the College to grow and prosper, as they have remembered the College through their visionary generosity, ensuring that generations of students to come will have access to a quality education.

Recognizing donors who have included the College in their estate plans with a gift of any size.

In 2002, the College signed an agreement with the U.S. Navy and the Northern Montgomery Center for Technical Studies that awards college credit for specifi c Navy training courses in partial fulfi llment of the requirements leading to the associate’s degree in Applied Science. The signing marked the fi rst-ever agreement between the College and any branch of the U.S. military.
