Vocabulary

• Red Scare- period in American history where there was great fear of communism in the United States. There were two Red Scares, the first from 1918-1921 and the second from 1947-1957.

Dot Game• Each of you will be given an index card. Some

of the index cards will have red stickers on them. Some will not have anything on them.

• Your job is to question your classmates to figure out who has the red dots.

• You cannot show your card to anyone. • The goal of the game is the create the largest

group of people without a red dot. • Questions?

Why did we have a Second Red Scare?

• As the cold war started there was fear of Soviet spies in the United States.

• In addition, the Soviets created their own atomic bomb in 1949.

• Americans were afraid that their national security was at risk.

Red Scare

• During this time many in film, radio and movies were blacklisted.

• This means that they were put on a list of people not to hire because they were thought to be communists.

HUAC and McCarthy

• The House Un-American Activities Committee was founded in 1938 to investigate disloyalty and harmful foreign influences in the U.S. but was used extensively after 1947 to find communists.

• HUAC launched a series of widely publicized hearings targeting Hollywood.

• In 1950 Senator Joseph McCarthy began a campaign to expose Communists all over the U.S.

HUAC and McCarthy continued

• McCarthy created a list of high level U.S. operative who he believed to be Communists.

• The public was outraged and investigations started. Anyone who challenged McCarthy was looked at as being a Communist or sympathizing with Communists.

• He attacked dozens of innocent people.• He was only stopped when he accused the

military of housing Communists

Rosenberg Trial

• Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were American communists who were convicted of sending American Nuclear secrets to the Soviets

• They were both executed.• This caused a huge stir in America because

may believed they were unfairly punished because of the hysteria of the Red Scare
