LinkedIn is for job searches but Facebook defines reputation.

Both job seekers and recruiters have named LinkedIn as the platform for their job seeking and recruiting activities, while job seekers also use Facebook for personal branding and to check out what others say about employers.

Recruiters use both LinkedIn and Facebook to check out a candidate’s personality.

FOR A JOB SEARCH

Jobs – Use the JOBS link at the top of the page to search for jobs in your profession. Complete a general search, then narrow it down to your ZIP code.

Groups – Join job search support groups such as the Federal Job Search Support, JibberJobber, and/or the Jewish Social Service Association (JSSA). 26

FOR YOUR JOB SEARCH

Company Search - One of the best ways to use LinkedIn is if you have a very specific company you are interested in. You search on that company, and hopefully find people who are connected to other people you know. Then, you can ask your personal contact to introduce you. This section allows employers to post jobs on the site. The jobs are usually high quality, professional jobs.

Twitter Link - LinkedIn gives you the ability to link your to your conversations from Twitter to your profile. So, anyone who is not on Twitter, can see what you are tweeting about. 27

LIKE/ FOLLOW PAGES

Most major employers have company pages and many even have separate pages with information about careers at the company.

View these pages to learn about a company’s culture and products and their open positions.

Use the search box on FaceBook to find the companies you are targeting in your search.

By “liking” the page you will receive their news feeds, then you can engage in the conversations by commenting on the company page.

You may also learn more about potential job opportunities. 37

JOB SEARCH APPLICATIONS ON FACEBOOK

BranchOut https://branchout.com/ BeKnown http://beknown.monster.com/, andGlassdoor http://glassdoor.com are third party applications that run on the FaceBook platform and allow you to connect with recruiters and people from companies you are interested in without sharing all your personal information on FaceBook.

These applications leverage FaceBook’s network to help you to connect with people who may be able to make important introductions for you.

TARGET THE INDIVIDUALS/COMPANIES YOU FOLLOW ON FACEBOOK

What if you found someone who was a thought leader in your industry or someone who you wanted to get regular updates from but you don’t really know them?

By following their FaceBook updates you can receive their updates in your feed without friending them. They will be notified that you are a subscriber.

Just key in their name in the search box, go to their profile, and click on follow if they have enabled this feature on their page. This is a great way to get on their radar and possibly turn a cold job lead into a warm one.

USE TIMELINE EFFECTIVELYThe timeline profile is great for customizing your Facebook page and building your professional and personal brand.

Important events and pictures can be highlighted, the pages you like can be prominently displayed, and you can show other interests such as the books you read or the music you like.

The Timeline is like your visual résumé and it gives you many opportunities for building a compelling and engaging message of value.

CREATE TARGETED STATUS UPDATESUse your status updates to let your network know about professional events you are attending, interesting articles and books you are reading, and volunteer work you are doing to support your professional community.

Write about companies and leaders you admire, share industry best practices, and give shout-outs to colleagues when they experience success.

If you have a blog or videos to promote your professional brand, be sure to re-purpose this information on your FaceBook page.

These activities keep you and your professional areas of expertise top of mind with your friends and colleagues and this could lead to career introductions. 41

Status Update - Post status updates relating to your job search, frequently. Keep the fact that you are still looking for a job on their mind. Say things like "I had a great interview this morning... keep your fingers crossed!" or "I have a networking meeting later today with a company I'm really interested in!".

Tag Your Friends - If you write a blog post (WordPress) that includes a reference to a friend on FaceBook, tag them. That way, their friends will be alerted to your post, and your message will spread more quickly.

Message - While you may know most people you are friends with on FaceBook, you don't necessarily remember where they work. Send them a message explaining the situation, and what you are looking for. You can write much more in a message than you can in a post. 42

USE TWITTER FOR…Basic Networking - Become more connected to people who are involved in areas you’re interested in.

Job Postings - Connect to people who know about jobs that you would not have otherwise known, i.e. @socialmediajob or other recruiters.

Connecting - When someone follows you, read their bio. If it looks like they work somewhere you might be interested in, or if you think they might be someone who could connect you to others, get in touch with them. A few may say no or not respond, but most people are open to chatting.

Companies – Follow companies you are interested in working for to learn about upcoming initiatives for which they may be hiring.

What's Going On - Be proactive in talking about what's going on in regards to your job search. Mentioning things more often about interviews you had, or people you met with keeps it fresh in people's minds that you am looking for a job.

Reaching Out - Reach out to people you want to network with and say something like "Hi - I'm looking to break into _______. Is there anyone you can think of to refer me to?"

Twitter Name - Your Twitter name should be your name, as it will help in your search engine results.
