Dear friends,

The Greek mathematician, Archimedes, once

said “Give me a lever and a place to stand and

I can move the whole world.”

We can all agree that today’s world needs

moving in many ways. In response to the

challenges of the last year, we are proud to

say that MCAD helped inspire bold, powerful,

and purposeful solutions.

Call it Archimedes 2.0. In the 21st century,

creativity is the lever. MCAD is the place

to stand.

As you read through this report highlighting

MCAD’s achievements from June, 2010 through

May, 2011, we hope you share our pride in the

many ways our MCAD community has fearlessly

applied creativity to the challenges around us.

From works of art that make people think to

public health initiatives that help people live,

from video projects that help youth thrive to

scholarships that help low-income students

prosper, MCAD overflowed with a powerful

combination of talent, knowledge, and passion.

2010-2011 gave us a unique opportunity to

consider MCAD’s impact, past, present, and

future as we prepared for the college’s 125th

anniversary. We reflected on our history of

accomplishment and celebrated the brilliant

creators on campus today. And we forged a

strategic plan to guide us into MCAD’s Next Now,

when we will use our unique talents to move our

world forward.

We have a strong start. In the past year, as

we’ve met with colleagues from China to Brazil,

around our state and across the country, we

continue to be impressed by the admiration

for MCAD’s academic programs and alumni

achievements. Grounded in our intimate

campus in Minneapolis, buoyed by this region’s

legendary support for creative initiatives,

MCAD is rising to its vision:

It’s a bold goal, and we, as an institution, still

have so much that we can achieve. But our

lever is a strong one, and we have yet to see an

academic community anywhere in the world

that is better equipped to use that lever than

MCAD. With continued support from you —

MCAD’s dedicated community of alumni, donors,

community leaders, parents, faculty, and

friends — we know that the accomplishments

in these pages are just a hint of even greater

promise that is still to come. Thank you for your

support and partnership.

Transforming the world through creativity and purpose.

Minneapolis College of Art and Design / Year in Review: Transforming

At MCAD, we take part in transformation

every day. Canvas becomes creation.

Students become professionals. Beginners

become experts. Observers become

participants. Ideas become reality.

In 2010-2011, our transformations were

numerous, varied, and often profound.

Yet there were common threads. Every

transformation contributed to MCAD’s

distinguished legacy of achievement. Every

transformation moved our world toward the

Next Now of experience and understanding.

And every transformation was made possible

by MCAD’s generous community of support.

178 students came together to form

MCAD’s freshman class, with an average ACT

score of 24 and an average high school GPA

of 3.2.

98% of MCAD’s student body qualified

for and received some form of financial

assistance to pursue their undergraduate

degrees. 84% of MCAD students received

financial aid directly from MCAD’s own grant

and scholarship programs.

39% of all MCAD students were eligible

for the federal Pell Grant—available only to

students from the lowest income households

(typically less than $45,000/year).

154 students completed Bachelor of

Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees,

celebrated their graduation, and embarked

on promising careers in fine arts, design,

photography, film, web and multimedia,

illustration, and teaching.

12 students completed MFA degrees

in visual arts. All MCAD MFA candidates

pursued individualized studies guided by

faculty-mentors, who helped them shape

the best possible preparation for their

chosen fields of expertise.

More than 1,000 MCAD trustees,

alumni, parents, and friends joined

forces to raise $220,000 for the Students-

First Challenge, providing immediate

scholarship support to MCAD students.

More than 70 donors stepped forward

to become inaugural members of the

President’s Circle, a group of leaders who

are investing $1,000 or more in MCAD’s

dynamic academic community. Alumni

made up 26% of President’s Circle

membership in 2010-2011, transforming

their gratitude for their MCAD experiences

into opportunities for today’s students.

Transforming the world through creativity and purpose.

Creativity

Creativity is at the core of everything we do at

MCAD. Every day, in every studio and classroom,

mastery leads to innovation and fundamentals

give rise to originality. Every day, creativity

spreads throughout the community and around

the world as our students, faculty and alumni

create sought-after work, win awards, receive

fellowships, and apply their talents to forging

solutions in a wide range of creative fields.

During the 2010-2011 academic year, more

than 150 students participated in 15 gallery

exhibitions in two galleries on the MCAD

campus, as well as three locations in

the broader community.

MCAD’s largest public salute to creativity

took place from November 18-20, 2010. The

MCAD Art Sale welcomed more than 4,000 art

enthusiasts to view more than 7,000 original

works by MCAD students and recent alumni.

The largest college art sale in the country,

MCAD’s 2010 Art Sale raised over $300,000,

with 80% of revenues going directly to the

artists, and the remaining proceeds funding

MCAD’s scholarship programs.

Minneapolis-based marketing firm

BI Worldwide adopted a new corporate logo

last year. The agency of choice? A team of

inspired MCAD students, led by design chair

Bernard Canniffe.

Award-winning writer and filmmaker

Beth Pacunas came to MCAD to find creative

talent to design an identity system for her

new multimedia initiative, “Block by Block,”

a program that engages the imaginations of

troubled young people, teaching them ways to

protect themselves at home and in school.

Two major sculptures, donated by the estate

of Mary H. Dayton, inaugurated the new MCAD

sculpture garden. A third piece, on loan from

the estate of Michael Bigger, was displayed

as a memorial tribute to the distinguished

MCAD professor. 12

Minneapolis College of Art and Design / Year in Review: Purpose

At MCAD, we want to move the world. You

can feel the passion and determination in

every corner of our community. Our sense of

purpose is grounded in our curriculum and

shines through our scholarship funds and our

commitment to affordability. It’s there in our

classroom experiences and our state-of-the-art

studios. It fuels our internships and externships,

our undergraduate graphic design firm, and our

community initiatives. It drives our institutional

planning, energizing us to build the best

possible support structure for our ideals.

In May 2011, MCAD’s Board of Trustees

approved a strategic plan entitled “The Next

Now” that will build on MCAD’s considerable

strengths and guide its next phase of creative

excellence. As part of the plan, the college

adopted a vision statement for the first time —

transforming the world through creativity and

purpose.

Throughout the 2010-2011 year, a team of

MCAD students applied their creative expertise

to assist Abbott Northwestern Hospital and

Allina Hospitals and Clinics, helping them design

new technology interfaces to support the healing

process and improve the patient experience.

A group of 15 MCAD advertising and

communications students worked with the

Women’s International League for Peace and

Freedom (WILPF), helping the 96-year-old

organization design a membership campaign to

communicate its historic brand and mission to a

young, contemporary demographic.

MCAD’s undergraduate-staffed graphic

design agency, DesignWorks, assisted 65

clients with more than 275 projects in 2010-

2011, giving 34 students firsthand professional

experience.

MCAD design students created and

distributed over 300 “Welcome Home” mats

in the Whittier neighborhood. Their innovative

project used the power of design to create

awareness of homelessness and to foster

community spirit in the neighborhood.

In conjunction with a social design class,

one of MCAD’s MFA candidates created the

Halal Hotdog Project, which uses hotdog stands

to foster cultural awareness and encourage

entrepreneurship among Minneapolis’ Somali

community.

Transforming the world through creativity and purpose.

Page 25: MCAD Annual Report 2010/11

22

The Center for Urban Transportation

Research gave MCAD its Best Workplace for

Commuters award in 2010. Metro Transit

similarly honored MCAD’s creative, commuter-

friendly policies with its Commuter Choice

Award for Innovative Incentives and Best

Holistic Program.

MCAD supporters demonstrated vision,

commitment, and unflagging generosity in

2010-11. In a challenging economy, MCAD’s

community of alumni, donors, parents, faculty,

staff and friends invested in the college with a

nearly 22% increase in overall contributions.

The total number of donors to MCAD grew by

10% last year.

Thanks to a major gift from Donna and Cargill MacMillan, Jr., MCAD was able to create a plan for its new sculpture garden on the 26th Street border of campus. The sculpture garden gives MCAD a new way to share student and professional work with the community, and gives the Whittier neighborhood a new interface with MCAD’s culture of creativity.

“We contribute to MCAD’s scholarship fund because we believe it’s the best, most powerful way to support creativity in our community. By helping give young people access to a top quality art and design education, I know I’m not just giving them a chance to succeed individually—I’m also giving our whole community, and really the whole world, an opportunity to benefit from their talents for years to come.”

“As a parent, there’s no greater joy than watching your child truly thrive. When our daughter came to MCAD, we were overwhelmed with gratitude for this magical place that celebrated her talents, cultivated her creativity, and invited her to hone her skills with her field’s leading practitioners. We contribute to MCAD because we appreciate how much they give their students. It’s also our way to ensure that future generations of families will have the same opportunity to watch their children blossom.”

“MCAD makes our community better. It’s that simple. It turns out highly-educated, skilled, and visionary creators who improve the vitality of our entire region. That’s why we contributed to MCAD’s Student-First Challenge, and that’s why I’m so proud that our efforts and matching funds inspired $281,000 of new funding for MCAD scholarships.”

“When I attended MCAD, I saw a lot of great students hit a point where they were unable to finish their schooling due to finances. Some of the most talented and ambitious were forced to step away from their studies and passion, and some of them never returned. When I was approached to donate my time to make a film about the importance of scholarships, I felt compelled to help MCAD create materials to help raise money so fewer students would be forced to step away from their passion.”
