A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: MUSIC OF JOY AND INSPIRATION

In thinking about this evening’s program, I take inspiration from Tom Morris, one of America’s most active public philosophers, who wrote: “Music is an art that brings us both beauty and miracles. Ancient philosophers speculated that it’s the language of creation. And it’s the paradoxically wonderful meeting place of mathematics and the soul - numbers dipped in delight. Music moves us and lifts us up. Its ratios, rhythms, and harmonies can cause your spirit to soar. Like all the most wonderful things in life, no one can fully explain it, but anyone can feel it. As Plato understood: “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.” Some of the most prominent stoic thinkers of first century Rome surmised that joy is our most fundamental natural state. Watch young animals at play. Observe small children running and tumbling outside on a sunny day. Their exuberance comes naturally. Their bodies move freely. Laughter explodes and flows. Play is creation’s celebration of itself. There is often an almost musical rhythm to it. It is an important part of the dance of life. And then things come our way that we allow to take us far from the spirit of play and disturb and even erase our joy. The world is full of distractions and difficulties, obstacles and challenges, frustrations and tragedies that can scatter us inwardly and bring us down. But the world also provides antidotes, keys to the doors that our struggles may have locked, talismans of transformation that can restore us to our best and highest state. One of these gifts of creation is music. In fact, music seems to put us in touch with that native joy that may indeed be our birthright. We sway, we move, we dance, and we free ourselves from the troubles and constraints all around that would disturb us. As Emerson saw it, “Music takes us out of the actual and whispers to us dim secrets that startle our wonder as to who we are, and for what, whence, and whereto.” It can refresh us deeply as it returns us closer to the source of all our energy, hope, and love.

Huffington Post, November 26, 2010, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-morris/music-and-joy_b_788663.html.

Joy on tonight’s program takes many shapes. In the first half, spiritual joy is reflected first in the exclamation of the ancient prayer “Sanctus” – “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts,” then set in the hand of Mendelssohn, “O praise the Lord, ye children, Praise the name of the Lord.” Benjamin Britten’s tour de force, “Rejoice in the Lamb,” an ecstatic outburst of joy, takes as its text a poem by mystic Christopher Smart, who sees the abundant joy of creation in all things. We conclude the first half with two different takes on humankind’s yearning for that which is called “heavenly joy,” first, with two traditional songs woven together in “No Time,” and last, with MCA’s Paula Tillen’s haunting arrangement of “Our Island Barque.”

Our second half features music by Paul Rudoi, the winner of the 2011 MCA Young Composer’s Composition Competition. For his piece, Paul selected a poem by Siegfried Sassoon on the subject of the Armistice Agreement of 1918. Pure joy manifested itself when the end of that world conflict came, as the poet wrote, “Everyone suddenly burst out singing; And I was filled with such delight.” MCA is pleased to present the world premiere of “Everyone Sang” this evening, and we congratulate Paul on his very fine composition.

Three short pieces follow, each presenting a take on joy and inspiration in its own unique way: “The Giver of Stars,” with poetry by one of America’s first

A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR: THE LANGUAGES OF LOVE (cont.)

renowned female poets Amy Lowell; “Sure on this Shining Night,” Samuel Barber’s inspirational setting of a James Agee poem, again on the subject of World War I; and Chicago composer Robert Harris’ “Life has Loveliness to Sell,” with the sublime poem “Barter” by American poet Sara Teasdale, in which we all are reminded to live our lives completely and with all we have.

David Conte’s major work, “In Praise of Music,” takes its text from an unfinished poem by Shelley and the well-known Ode to St. Cecilia’s Day by John Dryden. This rhapsodic work, with a piano accompaniment that is romantically inspired, is a fitting end to our program of music that finds its way in inspiration and joy. And as a special treat, in celebration of our Thirteenth Season, “Peace—Love—Joy,” we sing an encore by Joan Szymko, with its good thoughts of peace, love, and joy that we wish you, our devoted audience.

MCA celebrates its Fourteenth Season next year in splendid style, where “All Directions Lead to MCA.” You will be treated to music from all corners of the globe, in countless languages and styles, in true MCA fashion. Year Fourteen is an exciting prelude to MCA’s Festive Fifteenth Anniversary Season, with world premieres, fabulous concerts, special events, and a gala event you won’t want to miss. The next two years will be glorious—you won’t want to miss one note of them!

HISTORY

Now in its thirteenth season, the Milwaukee Choral Artists (MCA) is Wisconsin’s premier professional choral ensemble, and one of only five professional women’s choral ensembles in the country. With its signature lush sound, MCA brings a distinctive repertory of choral and vocal masterworks—including well-known pieces, new music, seldom-performed works, and music of diverse cultures and historical periods—to concert audiences throughout the region.

Founded in 1998 as a chamber ensemble comprised of professional solo singers, MCA occupies a singular position of excellence in the city, state, and region. In December 2007, Tom Strini, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Music Critic, named the Milwaukee Choral Artists—Present Music collaborative performance of Olivier Messiaen’s “Trois Petites Liturgies” (with MCA’s Sharon Hansen conducting) the #1 Performing Arts Event of the Year. Two years previously, MCA’s “Liederabend” was named the Journal Sentinel’s #1 performing arts event of 2005; of the top ten events named that year, MCA held two positions.

Regularly hailed for its imaginative programming, the group has quickly established itself in the mainstream of professional music making both within and beyond Milwaukee. Milwaukee Choral Artists enjoys regular appearances with Present Music, Milwaukee’s internationally acclaimed contemporary music ensemble. In 2006, the Milwaukee Choral Artists joined Present Music in the world premiere of Kamran Ince’s “Hammers and Whistlers,” which Journal-Sentinel music critic Tom Strini selected as one of his “Top Ten Performing Arts Events” for the year. Under Hansen’s baton, the two ensembles also presented the 2005 world premiere of Milwaukee-born composer Daron Hagen’s “Flight Music,” a six-movement work with texts by Amelia Earhart, named by Strini as “Best Musical Premiere of 2005.” In November 2004, MCA and Present Music performed the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Brant’s “Wind, Water, Clouds and Fire,” which Tom Strini also selected as one of his “Top Ten Classical Music Events for 2004.

Equally well versed in early music, the Milwaukee Choral Artists has performed twice with the internationally acclaimed The Boston Camerata, presented by Early Music Now (the Midwest’s renowned early music presenting organization.) In May 2009, MCA was heard once again on the Early Music Now stage when they joined San Francisco’s professional female vocal ensemble KITKA in a collaborative concert. MCA has also performed as part of the Fine Arts Concert Series at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist (Milwaukee) and St. James Cathedral (Chicago), at the national convention of Catholic Cathedral Musicians, and in state and regional conventions of the American Choral Directors’ Association. Its first professional CD, SKY-BORN MUSIC, was released in February 2010.

The Milwaukee Choral Artists performs three regular season concerts each year at historic venues throughout the Milwaukee area. Committed to presenting music from diverse cultures, the ensemble has performed music in twenty-eight languages from more than forty world cultures since its inception.
