    He

    lives at

    and

    learn if

    James

    introduced any legislation

that is still affecting your lives - I never got around doing i t

a Senator from Harrison Belrapht and I believe

    .About Newton

    Mcl illan

Cbituary written by EeVo John Quincy Smith

He was. born in Pennsylvania of Scotch-Welch parentage. He caine to

    .. /Ohio with his parents

    when

about U j ears of age. The opportunities

    .

    for

education in the wilderness were meager,

    yet

    through using every

opportunity and meditative thought he became a

    veiy^

    intelligent man,

    fond of reading poetry

    and history in

    the making.

    He

    had the habit

    : about-important matters

    unti l

    he reached a conclusion

    that

    was

    satisfactory

    to his

    own

    mind.

    His

    one

    object

    seemed

    to be

    ,

    to

    know what

is trjith . In the e ffo rt to find

    truth he became a

    clear

    and

    logical

thinker. He always listened in the kindest

    man

    -

    ner to the

    arguments

of those who disagree with him but would defend

    his

    own opinions with strong and

    forcible

    reasons. He^ submitted

    . every

    question

    to the intelligent judgment

    of

    his own tni.nd. This

    . .was

    so in religion, in

    morals and in

    pol i t ics . Originally

    a Whig,

. / : he was an intense opponent of slavery, and on the

    organization

    of

    -

    the

    .Liberty

    party

    became one

    of i t s

    most

    ardent

    advocates.

    Later

, . becoming an ardent Republican* Salmon P, Chase seems to have been

    .

    his

    beau

    ideal of

    a statesman

    and General

    U,. S., Grant, of a

.'^soldier; evidenced by his naming his youngest son, Chase Grant,

/ .;.:> But he was never the unquestioning, supporter of any party. After

    -the Republican party

    had

    restored the

    Union

    and

    emancipated the slaves

he thought i t had accomplished i ts purpose and turning to what he

considered the next greatest evil he

    bec^e

    an

    ardent

    Prohibition-

    i s t in

his old age as he had

    been

    an anti- Slavery

    man

    in his prime.

In political disputes he was kindly and courteous. His condannation

    w of

    wrong and evils, not

    of men

    or parties. He was

    greatly al

    flicted

    with rheumatism

    for

    mapy

    years,

and for the last nine months

    he was

    blind

    and

    helpless requiring

    constant and

    careful

    attendance.

    He bore

    his

long suffering with the courage and patience of a Chris

    tian,

    Ho

    petulant word escaped

    his lips,

    Rven these last

    months

. he has been eager to hear about events

    in

    the county

    and

    the

    stir

ring events of the world, asking

    his

    daughter to read to

    him
