more efficiently with their friends, family and coworkers and can also make upto 200 pages of

their interest. The company develops technologies that facilitate the sharing of information

through the social graph, the digital mapping of people's real-world social connections. Anyone

can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment. A

Features

Basic features include friend networking with others and posting on a "wall" or "commenting"

on pictures.

The following is the list of activities which can be performed on facebook:

Publisher

Publisher is the main feature to post information and messages which appear on the user's own

Wall, on their friend's Walls, as well as the News Feed on the Home page.

News Feed

News Feed highlights information that includes profile changes, upcoming events, and

birthdays, among other updates. News Feed also shows conversations taking place between the

walls of a user's friends. An integral part of the News Feed interface is the Mini-Feed, a news

stream on the user's profile page that shows updates about that user. Unlike in the News Feed,

the user can delete events from the Mini-Feed after they appear so that they are no longer

visible to profile visitors.

Wall

The Wall is a space on each user's profile page that allows friends to post messages for the user

to see while displaying the time and date the message was written. One user's wall is visible to

anyone with the ability to see his or her full profile, and different users' wall posts show up in

an individual's News Feed. Many users use their friends' walls for leaving short, temporal notes.

More private discourse is saved for Messages, which are sent to a person's inbox, and are

visible only to the sender and recipient(s) of the Message, much like email.

Photos

One of the most popular applications on Facebook is the Photos application, where users can

upload albums of photos, tag friends, and comment on photos. According to Facebook, there are

y  1.7 billion user photos

y  2.2 billion friends tagged in user photos

y  160 terabytes of photo storage used with an extra 60 terabytes available

y  60+ million photos added each week which take up 5 terabytes of disk space

y  3+ billion photo images served to users every day

y  100,000+ images served per second during peak traffic windows

Notes

Facebook Notes was introduced on 22 August 2006, a blogging feature that allowed tags and

embeddable images.

Marketplace

In May 2007, Facebook introduced the Facebook Marketplace allowing users to post free

classified ads within the following categories: For Sale, Housing, Jobs, and Other. Ads can be

posted in either available or wanted format.  The market place is available for all Facebook

users and is currently free.

Pokes

The poke feature is intended to be a virtual "nudge" to attract the attention of another user.

Hence, most Facebook users use this feature to attract attention or say "hello" to their friends.

Status Updates

Facebook has a micro-blogging feature called "status updates" (also referred to simply as

"status") which allows users to post messages for all their friends to read. In turn, friends can

respond with their own comments, and also press the "Like" button to show that they en joyed

reading it. A user's most recent status update appears at the top of their profile, and is also

noted in the "Recently updated" section of a user's friend list.

Events

Facebook events are a way for members to let friends know about upcoming events in their

community and to organize social gatherings. Events require an event name, network, host

name, event type, start and end time, location, and a guest list of friends invited. Events can be

open, closed, or secret. When setting up an event the user can choose to allow friends to

upload photos or videos.

Networks and groups

Facebook allows different networks and groups to which many users can join. It also allows

privacy settings on basis of networks. Groups are used for discussions and events etc. Groups

are a way of enabling a number of people to come together online to share information and

discuss specific subjects. They are increasingly used by clubs, companies and public sector

organizations to engage with stakeholders - be they members of the public, employees,

members, service users, shareholders or customers. A group is comprised of but not limited to

the following: the members who have joined, recent news contents, discussion board contents,

wall contents, photos, posted items, videos and all associated comments of such items.

Video

During the time that Facebook released its platform, it also released an application of its own

for sharing videos on Facebook. Users can add their videos with the service by uploading video,

adding video through Facebook Mobile, and using a webcam recording feature. Additionally,

users can "tag" their friends in videos they add much like the way users can tag their friends in

photos, except the location of the friend in the video is not displayed. Users also have the

option of video messaging. The maximum video length is 20 minutes and the maximum size is 1

GB.

Chat

On April 5, 2008, Facebook pre-released Facebook Chat. As of April 23, 2008, Facebook Chat

was released to the entire Facebook user base. Users are only able to chat with their Facebook

friends and on a one-to-one basis.

Public Profiles

Individuals or companies can create "Public Profiles" (Formerly known as "Pages") which allows

users to "become a fan" of the individual, product, service, or concept. Public Profiles look and

behave much like a user's personal private profile, with some significant differences. Public

Profiles are integrated with Facebook's advertising system, allowing Public Profile owners to

easily advertise to Facebook's users.

Platform applications

On May 24, 2007, Facebook launched the Facebook Platform, which provides a framework for

third party developers to create applications that interact with core Facebook features. As of

January 31, 2008, there were more than 14,000 applications. In these applications there are

many games, such as the peoples favourite Farmville, and many quizzes which try to tell a

person about himself, his friends and sometimes even celebrities.

We asked people that how many hours do they spent on facebook per week. The

distribution did have some variance but the values werent so far apart. Majority of the

respondents used facebook for about 3-7 hours per week, while some heavy users were also

seen.

An element of addiction can also be identified from this. That is there are people who use

facebook for 13-17 or more than 18 hours in a week which is a lot. This excessive time if given

to another activity can be more beneficial to the individual.

Facebook is also believed to be a source of general knowledge. Users can join forums or

use applications that help in widening their view of a particular subject. Majority of the

respondents replied that facebook provided them with knowledge oftenly, and then another

fairly large group was of the view that knowledge was rarely obtained from facebook.

It canbe perceived that facebook does offer some knowledge about a particular subject.

Which is totally upto the users discretion.

It is common knowledge that a healthy mind isnt the only important thing but a healthy

body is also mandatory for a healthy self. Since people use computers too much they give up

any sort of physical activities or at least there is some decrease in that physical activity, which

can grow in time.

The majority of the respondents said that they rarely give up their physical activities

because of facebook, and then another bulk said that they never give up their physical activities

because of facebook. This seems to indicate that sometimes people become lazy and slack off

on their routines. This habit is threat because if it grows then it can become even worse.

The best thing about social networking websites is that any shared piece of information

can be distributed in about no time at all. People talk about the current happenings on their

profiles or forums, which is seen by all of their friends or in some cases every one.

The majority of people replied that they get aware of the current events often by

facebook. So, it is seen that facebook is a good medium to spread any piece of information.

People when using facebook, comment on other peoples profiles, chat with friends, play

games which are designed in a way that a person and his friends can play together and

compare their results. This , sometimes, makes them sit on their computers for extended

periods of time which can result in Time Management Issues.

This isnt just a problem in itself but can cause a whole lot of new problem relating to

ones. For example, education etc.

It is seen that people spend a lot of time facebook or in general the computers. In our

society, we are accustomed to spending time with our families and helping out with chores

around the house. So, what happens if we put this time constraint in the mix. It can be said that

while using facebook people are busy, with games chatting, tagging etc , so they sometimes

neglect their responsibilities and chores.

Although the majority of the people replied that they didnt have any type of isolation

with their families, there was a small minority that expressed the predicted problem.

Today cell phones have become more than your common telephone, they have become

smart phones or miniature computers. You can surf the web, send and receive emails on your

phones just like you do on the computer. So, we asked our sample if they used facebook on

their mobile phones. This was basically done to generate an idea of their frequency of

use/activity.

A larger portion replied that they didnt use facebook on their mobile devices while a

fairly good number replied that they did use facebook on their mobile phones or devices.

would they have done if they couldnt find a computer or use facebook (in any way).

The majority said that they would study/work, and Physical activities were second place.

So, it is seen that if facebook wasnt there people would give more time to their studies or

physical acivities.

wondered if facebook was becoming a reason to get on the computer. So, we asked the sample

if they came online especially for facebook.

The majority of them replied that they didnt while still a good number of people replied

that they did. Some respondents also chose not to answer the question at all.

Research Report On Analyzing The Addiction Of Our Youth To Facebook

Conclusion & Recommendations:After analyzing the findings from the descriptive and exploratory researches we reach to

the conclusion that facebook does pose a threat to its users. Although nothing in itself is bad,

its the use that makes it good or bad. Facebook has tendency to create addiction among its

users which can increase with time. Our research has not been proved but we can say on the

basis of our findings that if current trend continues then people will be really addicted to

Facebook.

Facebook has it positive points, which are, information can circulated with great ease

and people can communicate with friends and stay in touch with their friends whom they dont

see on a day to day basis.

Following are the recommendations given by us:

y  People should limit their FaceBook profiles only to their friends and family in order to

restrain from privacy issues.

y  In order to avoid addiction to FaceBook people should set a limit to usage to

FaceBook, this can really help them to increase their physical activities and education

performance.

y  People shouldnt waste excessive time just sitting on their P.Cs and logging on to

FaceBook to socialize, they should restrict excessive use to FaceBook.

y  As Face Book is the current preferred socializing network for the youth it can be a very

good platform to give a positive image and increase knowledge for the current youth

and future generations.

y  The Pakistani youth can be made more politically and educationally informed through

Face Book,as many people load many informative videos and post their comments so

people come to know each others print.
