AIDS Care Kits for Africa A big thank you to the students and staff who supported the AIDS Care Kits for Africa by purchasing bracelets, pen-cils and other items. Together we raised an amazing $350. That will go a long way towards making a difference in people's lives.

Administrators’ Message We are definitely looking forward to

Spring, the warmer weather and the return

of chirping birds and blooming flowers. Al-

though we had fewer school days in March,

    we were still very busy.

Our Future Aces presentation was a

great success, with both intermediate and

junior student leaders helping to deliver the

Future Aces message: a positive attitude,

cooperation, empathy and service are the

character traits we are fostering in our stu-

dents. As well, our Junior students will be

    participating in further training opportunities

in the upcoming weeks to become advo-

    cates of building strong character.

We have also had great leadership from

our Student Council. Not only did they or-

ganize a fabulous Carnaval in February, but

they have also been leading intramural ac-

    tivities for various grades.

The EcoTeam has also been busy audit-

ing our energy usage, waste diversion and

planning for upcoming events. Our stu-

dents participated in Earth Hour on March

computers and monitors. This short hour

helped students to see how a small change

can have a big impact. We will be working

hard this month to achieve our Eco Goals,

leading up to Earth Day on April 22nd.

We are looking forward to another month

full of academic, social and emotional learn-

    ing opportunities.

The English Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Mazo! What better way to pro-mote reading to our students than by supporting this important literary event?!?

We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest and great-est in children’s books. Did you know that for every $10 you spend at the Fair up to $6 comes directly back to our school? Your support of this vital literary

event is key in helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.

You’ll find hundreds of quality English books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. A Book Fair flyer will be coming home soon – it will provide a preview of a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Fair.

The flyer also contains a special Family Event Draw ballot that parents can deposit during our Family Event. You could win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s class-room!

Don’t forget to mark the Book Fair dates on your calendar: the week of May 5th! We look for-ward to seeing you during our English Scholastic Book Fair and thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary fundraiser. Mostly, thank you for believing in books and the importance reading has on your child’s future.

  • Roots of Empathy Families Needed for 2014-15 This year, our grade 7 students have been working with Mme Madeley and Mme Tokarev to understand the bond that forms between a baby and his/her parents, as well as how babies communicate through reactions, facial expressions and gestures. They have focused on the development of empathy in order to understand another person’s emotions without having lived through that experience. We are looking for families to participate in our Roots of Empathy program for the 2014-15 school year. Babies need to be newborn – 4 months at the beginning of the school year. If you or someone you know is pregnant, and would like to participate in this program, please contact the school. For more information, please visit http://www.rootsofempathy.org/.

SUMMER INSTITUTE: Programs for elementary students in July and August The York Region District School Board has posted information about the Summer Institute(SI) for elementary students on their website. The SI provides full day programming with a vari-ety of academic, recreational and athletic activities for students in SK – Grade 8.

The Summer Institute which usually runs out of Prince Charles P.S. in the summer will be housed this year at a different school location. From June 30 – August 8, Summer Institute programs will be organized at Stuart Scott P.S.. You are encouraged to consider the afford-able weekly summer programs for your children. Visit Summer Institute for more details. In-formation / registration packages are also available in our school office.

Eco Corner Did you know that … Toronto consumes an estimated 100 million plastic bottles a year, of which 35% are not recycled. Plastic bottles take 700 years to begin composting. (www.yorku.ca/sustainability)

We need to do something about this here at Mazo! For the month of April, our focus will be on reducing the amount of plastic water bottles we use at school, and even at home. Please help us by using refillable water bottles for lunches and sporting events. Our Eco Team will be monitoring our refillable water
