VIKING NATION NEWSLETTER January, 2016 Viking Nation, It’s a great time to be a Viking; so many new and exciting things are happening here at Mazama it is hard to keep up. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, we are rolling out the STEM&M project second semester, see our web page for details and watch the local news for signing day! We are adding technology in the building at an outstanding rate to improve teaching, learning and student engagement. A special thanks to our counseling department for going the extra mile to assist our students in visiting local college campuses. On December 7th, we took a bus load of students to visit KCC where they had the opportunity to meet KCC staff, go on a campus tour and eat lunch on campus. Mazama will also be visiting Oregon Tech on Friday, January 15th for a campus visit (11:00 a.m.- 2:45 p.m.). We will tour the campus, learn about financial aid and admissions, eat lunch catered by Oregon Tech, then research the campus about specific programs that our students may be interested in! Later this spring, we are planning a longer trip to Southern Oregon University, information to follow as it gets closer. Check the web page for details. If your student would like to attend any of these opportunities, please have them set up a meeting with one of our counseling staff for requirements. Juniors and Seniors will have first priority, but if we have room, we will allow Freshmen and Sophomores to attend if they meet the requirements. Steve Morosin, Principal

VIKING NATION NEWSLETTER January, 2016
Viking Nation,
It’s a great time to be a Viking; so many new and exciting things are happening here at
Mazama it is hard to keep up. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, we are rolling out the STEM&M
project second semester, see our web page for details and watch the local news for signing day! We
are adding technology in the building at an outstanding rate to improve teaching, learning and
student engagement.
A special thanks to our counseling department for going the extra mile to assist our students
in visiting local college campuses. On December 7th, we took a bus load of students to visit KCC
where they had the opportunity to meet KCC staff, go on a campus tour and eat lunch on campus.
Mazama will also be visiting Oregon Tech on Friday, January 15th for a campus visit (11:00 a.m.-
2:45 p.m.). We will tour the campus, learn about financial aid and admissions, eat lunch catered by
Oregon Tech, then research the campus about specific programs that our students may be
interested in! Later this spring, we are planning a longer trip to Southern Oregon University,
information to follow as it gets closer. Check the web page for details.
If your student would like to attend any of these opportunities, please have them set up a
meeting with one of our counseling staff for requirements. Juniors and Seniors will have first priority,
but if we have room, we will allow Freshmen and Sophomores to attend if they meet the
requirements.

Guidelines for requesting a student opt out of state required testing:
The State of Oregon requires school districts to test students using the Smarter Balanced assessment in grades 3 thru 8 and in
grade 11. Districts are required to test 95% of all students and 95% of students in specifically defined groups identified on the
annual school report card.
Parents and adult students are allowed to opt out of state required testing in accordance with Oregon law. The opt out proce-
dure has been defined by the Oregon Department of Education, and the required forms are available on the district’s website
under the tab marked for “Parents.” The Oregon Department of Education allows only this official form to be used to request a
student be “opted out” of testing. Opt out forms must be filled out completely and signed by the parent or adult student in the
presence of a school official. Opt out forms must be received prior to the start of student testing.
Opting out of state required testing does not excuse a student from meeting essential skills for the purpose of graduation. A
high school student that does not take and meet essential skills through state testing must meet through alternative means.

Information Regarding the Smarter Balanced Assessment

paralysis in her feet because she cannot build up tone in her muscles. Because of this, Cydney spends much of her time in her wheelchair or using her walker.
Despite all she has faced, Cydney radiates
positivity and love to all those she encounters.
She loves her family, her service dog, Buddy, and
Taylor Swift, and her adorable smile lights up a
room!
We, members of Sparrow Club, look forward to committing our service and support to help our new Sparrow, Cydney Cornils. We know you will love her as much as we do!
How Can I Afford College?
There are two amazing grants that make community college
affordable for local students.
The new Oregon Promise grant will allow Oregon residents of any
age, who graduate from high school or earn their GED in the
spring/summer of 2016, to receive free tuition at Oregon
community colleges for up to two years!
Enrollment for the Oregon Promise is already underway and
continues until March 1, 2016. Students must complete their
FAFSA by the end of January. Space is limited! Learn more about
the Oregon Promise and sign up today by visiting
oregonpromise.org.
The Advanced Diploma Program (ADP) provides one year of free
community college tuition, books and fees. ADP may go through
some legislative changes in the next few months but the tentative
application date is set for April 1, 2016. Applications will be
available through KCC and at area high schools.
Students are encouraged to sign up for both programs because
funding is limited.

For questions please contact Coach Kaci Mitchell at
the KCC Business Skills Academy on Tues., December 15.. It
was a great day filled with event testing, workshops, and
awards. Some students signed up for test-only events,
while others participated in speaking events and mock job
interviews. There was an opening session presented by
Luke Ovgard, who spoke about the positives and negatives
of social media. Paris Price (past Mazama FBLA president
and current PBL president) was also a keynote speaker.
Students also enjoyed various workshops such as Speaking
for Success, Client Services and You’re Wearing it Wrong!
Lunch was provided and then awards were given
out. Mazama did exceptionally well, with many students
placing in their events!

A Special Thank You….
We would like to extend a special ‘thank you” to the Sons of Norway for
their donation of a Viking ship. Mazama has added their own “M” to the
mast. The Viking ship has adorned the football field during games, has
been used for homecoming and most recently helped represent Mazama’s
Sparrow Club in the Snowflake Parade!
