Curtis Strube Small Business Award with two events aimed at honoring previous recipients and recognizing the finalists for this year’s award. Originating in 1992 on the suggestion of Dr. Curtis Strube, the late director of Drury University’s Breech School of Business and an avid Chamber supporter, the Small Business Award highlights the important role small business plays in driving our local economy. Each year five companies are honored as finalists based on written applications covering company history, management philosophy, response to challenges, innovative products or services, and community-oriented contributions. The applications are scored by an inde- pendent panel of judges and the award recipient is announced exclusively at the conclusion of the annual award luncheon. This year, the Small Business Award Luncheon will be held May 2 at noon at The Tower Club, and will feature a video highlighting the top five finalists. The luncheon follows a special Good Morning, Springfield!, also on May 2 at The Tower Club, starting at 7:30 a.m. The breakfast panel features previous Small Business Award recipients discussing how their companies have evolved and grown over the years since receiving the award. Throughout the day attendees will be able to view a special video retrospective of previous award recipients and browse the Small Business Showcase to learn more about the products and services offered by small business Chamber members. The five companies named as finalists for the 2012 Small Business Award include: DeLong Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning provides maintenance, repair and new construction services for industrial, residential and commercial areas. With 47 employees, president is Garry R. DeLong. After 18 years in the plumbing business, Garry started his own busi- ness in his home’s basement in 1992 and grew to employ 10 plumbers with full office support before a 2003 tornado demolished their main office, building and several pieces of equipment. With the help of their employees, customers and friends, the family-operated company quickly rebounded and has since expanded into new areas while keeping its focus on creating long-standing relationships with its customers. time and three part-time employees, vice-president is Charles Nelson. Founded in 2001, Anne and Charles Nelson purchased the company in 2008 and have since expe-rienced significant growth in work orders, corporate staff and independent contractors. The company’s initial preservation services, maintenance services, and repair work maintains a property’s integrity, protecting its value and marketability until foreclosure or REO sale. The company has managed its rapid growth through automation, innovative software systems, strategic partnerships and a focus on well-trained staff and contractors. Old Missouri Bank provides com-mercial banking services for both personal and business customers. With 33 employees, president and CEO is Mark Harrington. As a locally-owned, independent community bank, Old Missouri Bank was formed by a group of 37 local investors in 1999 and opened its first location with 10 employees. After opening a second location in 2003, the bank converted from a national charter to a state charter in 2008. The state charter gave the bank more flexibility and a higher legal lending limit, allowing it to grow steadily in the last 13 years, even through the recent economic and financial turmoil. The bank credits this flexibility, stable customer relationships and rigorous employee training for its growth from $5M in assets in 1999 to more than $130M in assets in 2012. Pension Consultants, Inc., manages all facets of employer-sponsored retire-ment plans. With 18 employees, founder and president is Brian D. Allen. The firm was created in 1994 by Brian Allen to meet an unmet need in the marketplace that aligned with his core values of honesty, integrity and transparency. The company serves as an independent advocate for its clients and serves major corporations headquartered throughout the Midwest and Midsouth with more than 69,000 combined participants and $1.916B in assets under advisement. The company aims to manage each plan in the way in which it was intended – an approach that that insulates the plan fiduciaries, guides plan sponsor employees through their responsibilities and enhances the benefits to the participants. Rick’s Automotive, Inc., a full service repair shop specializing in automotive repair on cars, light trucks and fleets. With 35 employees, founder and president is

Rick Hughlett. Rick and Karen Hughlett founded the company in 1980 with two employees and five bays in a 2,500 sq. ft. facility, and averaged 100 vehicles ser-viced per month. Now in a 26,000 sq. ft. repair facility with 28 bays, the com-pany services more than 1,000 vehicles a month, including 110 local fleets. The company strives to raise the level of expertise and professionalism not only wit in its own business through field-specific and management training for its

employees, but also in the automotive repair industry as a whole, bringing an Automotive Service Association (ASA) chapter to Springfield and working with the American Automobile Association (AAA) to help certify automotive establish-ments for the benefit of customers.
