MAYOR DAWN ZIMMER & THE HOBOKEN CITY COUNCIL 2012 RECREATION & CULTURAL AFFAIRS NEWSLETTER HOBOKEN SUM MER FUN Dear Neighbor, Part of what makes Hoboken such a great place to live is the rich variety of cultural and recreational opportunities we enjoy. As Mayor, it is a pleasure to be able to continue to offer and expand these free outdoor activities for our community. We’re continuing favorites like Movies Under the Stars, Summer Concerts, Art in the Park, and Fam- ily Fun Nights, and we’re adding some exciting new events. The Sounds of Hoboken will be a citywide event featuring free live musical performances through- out our parks, streets, shops, and restaurants. To highlight our vibrant local arts community, we’re starting a monthly Gallery Walk. Last year the NJ Symphony Orchestra performed a special outdoor concert on Pier A, and we’re bring- ing them back for what we hope will become an annual tradition. We’re expanding recreation opportunities, with new lacrosse clinics for boys and girls, the adult basketball league, and ping pong at the Multi Service Center. And Hoboken will be an official host city for Olympic Day 2012. Finally, I’m very glad to announce that Union City has generously agreed to make their pool available to Hoboken residents this summer for several weekday sessions. The outdoor pool is a short distance from Hoboken and has spectacular views of Manhattan. We will be announcing dates, times and other details shortly. I hope you enjoy your summer and take advantage of all that Hoboken has to offer. I look forward to seeing you at our events. Mayor Dawn Zimmer IN THE CITY

Dear Neighbor,
Part of what makes Hoboken such a great place to live is the rich variety of cultural and recreational opportunities we enjoy. As Mayor, it is a pleasure to be able to continue to offer and expand these free outdoor activities for our community.
We’re continuing favorites like Movies Under the Stars, Summer Concerts, Art in the Park, and Fam-ily Fun Nights, and we’re adding some exciting new events.
The Sounds of Hoboken will be a citywide event featuring free live musical performances through-out our parks, streets, shops, and restaurants. To highlight our vibrant local arts community, we’re starting a monthly Gallery Walk. Last year the NJ Symphony Orchestra performed a special outdoor
concert on Pier A, and we’re bring-ing them back for what we hope will become an annual tradition.
Mayor Dawn Zimmer

Southwest Park & Land AcquisitionIn March, the City made an offer to several property owners to purchase land for a Southwest Park. The majority of the cost would be funded through a Hudson County Open Space trust grant. The City is also actively exploring other sites in Western Hoboken for land acqui-sition.
Playground upgradesWe recently upgraded the playgrounds and play sur-faces at Jackson Street Park, Jefferson Street Park, and Legion Park (on Willow Avenue). For our larger parks – Church Square Park, Elysian Park, and Stevens Park, we are hiring an urban parks planner to work with the community on redesigns with innovative and age-appro-priate playgrounds that provide an interactive and open experience. At Church Square Park, that will include a small waterpark and three different playground areas.
Sinatra Field & Castle Point ParkThe City has secured the final necessary DEP permits to begin reconstructing the collapsed waterfront soccer field and walkway. A contract was awarded in Febru-ary, and the contractor is mobilizing on the site to begin reconstruction work. The contract includes a completion date of December 21, 2012 and a $1,500 per day pen-alty if the project is not completed on time.
1600 Park, Hoboken Cove & Weehawken CoveThe waterfront walkway connecting Hoboken to Weehawken openrd in early April. The City is finalizing bid specifications and expects to go out to bid and award a contract for the construction of 1600 Park and Hoboken Cove in mid-summer, once all permits have been secured. Work will commence in several phases, with construction of the multi-use field at 1600 Park and Hoboken Cove in the first phase, followed by additional phases.
Protecting the WaterfrontA developer recently presented a plan for the “Monarch at Shipyard” to build two eleven story buildings on a pier in north-ern Hoboken, despite a development agreement which included tennis courts, a tennis pavilion, a waterfront walkway and other amenities. The City has filed suit to compel the developer to construct these amenities and prevent the construction of the 11 story buildings.
Sincerely,
Parks & open Space Update

NEW: EXTENDED PARKING ZONESNew Jersey state law previously prohibited parking within 25 feet of intersections and 50 feet from stop signs on inbound street sections, however a recent change lets municipalities create parking closer to intersections and stop signs when schools are not in session.
As a result, the City established “Extended Parking Zones,” permitting residents to park 15 feet from crosswalks on “outbound” street segments and 25 feet from crosswalks on “inbound” street segments during certain times. “Outbound” and “inbound” street segments are the portions of the street that permit a vehicle to drive away from and towards an intersection, respectively.
Parking in “Extended Parking Zones” is not permitted between the hours of 7am and 7pm on days when public schools are in session. To maintain clearance for emergency response vehicles, any vehicle parked closer than 15 feet from a crosswalk is subject to summons and towing if it is determined that it could impact emergency response times. Please refer to the diagram below for examples of parking that is permitted and not permitted.
Parking near corners along inbound legs blocks visibility between pedestrians, bicyclists, and oncoming vehicles, posing a serious risk to all.
VOLUNTEER TO PAINT: The City is organizing a Parking Paint Day so all corners city-wide can be clearly marked before the summer. If you are interested in volunteering to paint, please sign up at www.hobokennj.org/extendedparking.
