ON THE WEBSITE MAIL [email protected] OR CALL 082 330 9623

Hello… Celeb Styles magazine has been around for one year this month. To celebrate our 1st anniversary we have a real treat for you in this issue! We’ve bumped it up to 84 pages, and have added loads more styles for you to enjoy. And for those who love the Kardashians/Jenners, in this issue you will be able to get their look on pages 10 to 11. We get a little closer to the gorgeous Kendall Jenner on pages 79 to 81.

Winter is definitely in the air and nothing beats a new pair of boots — we share some fabulous must-have winter boots on page 14.

In this issue we chat to Dustin Coutts who made his dream come true and opened his own salon, Bellezza Hair Design (pages 60 and 61). His salon is so stylish take a look on pages 58 and 59. We wish you all the best on your new venture Dustin!

The incredibly talented Clinton Valjeaux, part owner of Jeauval, shares a few lessons with Celeb Styles on what has carried him through the years on page 5. What stood out for me with his interview was two key things…

happiness and passion. Clinton’s family is his first priority (happiness) and his advice to all, ‘Find your passion before the pay cheque, the truth is if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life’ well said Clinton (passion). That is exactly what our motto is at APC Publishers; you have to love what you do! Make your dreams come true! Don’t wait! Start NOW!

Celeb Styles is a magazine for all salons to share their work. We have such talent in this industry, we want to share your work with the world! Even though we are a proudly South African magazine, our mag is a huge hit in America and England.

Get writing, share your styles and stories, we want your input.

Thank you to the team behind our magazine. It’s been a fabulous year!

Looking forward to the future.

5 - MINUTE INTERVIEW WITH

Clinton Valjeaux, part  owner of Jeauval Hair Salon, reflects on the lessons that have carried him through

the years. He also shares his expert knowledge on opening a salon.

When did you start? My personal hairdressing career start-ed in 1983 and Jeauval Hair Salons in 1989.

What made you go on your own? We wanted to start a family business whereby we could uplift our industry by incorporating world class standards, systems and training initiatives. In our small way we contribute to the economy by creating employment in South Africa; our staff compliment is roughly 200 people.

If you could do one thing differently, what would it be? Reflecting upon my journey over the last 25 years, there is not one single thing I would have done differently.

Toughest decision I’ve ever had to make… Consolidating our group, at times we closed less via-ble salons due to exorbitant rentals, costs etc.

These are always tough business decisions but this creates future opportunities within our group.

The key to happiness is… My valuable blessings, my wife, children, family and very reliable team.

I know my salon made it when…  I have retired, but that won’t happen for a long, long, time as my love and passion for my career and Jeauval keeps retirement far from my mind. I’m always striving for better quality and service which also prevents me from ever becoming stagnant or complaisant thinking we made it.......

The advice I’m glad I never took? In 1982, I was advised by a school teacher that a career in hair dressing was a bad decision. This proved to be the best motivation ever.

What advice do you give young stylists? Find your passion before the pay cheque, the truth is if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.

Raymond Germanotta has been working as a stylist at Paul James Hairdressing for eight years. “I’ve always had a passion for hairdressing but I enjoy and love doing avant-garde because you can be so creative when doing it and it inspires you to do more and

go further. When I’m building hair pieces it’s like my mind goes to another place that I can’t describe, it’s like being in your happy place,” says Raymond. I entered the Paul Mitchell hairstylist of the year competition and took part in the avant-garde section. I put a lot of time, effort and hard work into this competition and when they announced me as the winner I felt so proud, it was like a dream come true. It has always been one of my goals to enter and win the avant-garde section and it’s one of those moments that I will never forget. After winning the competition I am motivated to follow my dreams and make them a reality.

Treat your face like gold… with gold!

24-CARATYOUR

GOLD FACIALHaving a facial is always a treat, but the

new gold facial, aka EMK Placental Facial, is without a doubt an experience everyone should have. With 24-carat

gold massaged into your face during an hour-long relaxing facial, you won’t only feel like a celebrity, but look like one too. It’s not just big stars like Bar Refaeli, Simon Cowell and Eva Longoria who are enjoying it, but you can too now that it’s in South Africa. Believed to improve skin texture, tone, appearance, redness, elasticity, wrinkles, dark spots and hydration, sources say the hot new facial on the market is a must — and the best part is, many believe it’s actually not that new. According to reports, it was used back in the Cleopatra days — the Egyptian queen was rumoured to have slept with gold on her face every night to maintain her beauty.Dr Nicole Kanaris from Mode De Vie in Greenstone, Johannesburg, is the first doctor to offer the EMK Placental Facial in the country, and Celeb Styles got to enjoy the treatment recently.“The EMK skin treatment is the pure essence of natural vegetal placenta from the Agave Cactus native to Central America,” Nicole explains, adding “that this specific plant derived active ingredient works most exceptionally for cellular regeneration to repair the cells past while reprogramming a health-ier future. Placenta carries every known form of life to nourish, protect, preserve skin cells, build the immune system, and prevent damage. In order for the epidermis of the skin to change in any way from its various damaging mutations; such as skin scars, ageing wrinkles, dehydration, or skin hyper-pigmentation, there must be communication to and between the skin cells. What is so remarkable about plant placenta is that it has a unique ability to penetrate deeply into the skin’s hypodermis and is recognised by our own natural skin cells.

In this way, at the deepest cellular level, plant placenta organises and re-opens lines of communication between skin cells.“The plant placental combined with the 24-Carat Gold Leaf and EMK anti-ageing serum can be instantly absorbed through the skin to repair damaged collagen, reduce lines and wrinkles, as well as smooth and plump the skin.”When patients from Dubai, the US and the UK starting asking about the treatment, Nicole knew it was time to bring it into the country. “The plant placenta has the ability to change the skin from within putting us ahead of competitive brands,” says Nicole who adds that they were looking for a product that would be unique, superior and the first in SA. In the country for four months now, the results have been unbelievable, says Nicole. And while a session can cost between R1 500 and R1 800, it’s worth every cent. And the best part? It works on all skin tones and types. However Nicole does add that they would be very careful on oily, acne prone skin types and use less gold during the treatment to prevent overstimulation of oil glands. And the best part is, the results are instant. Your skin will feel firm and provide the most beautiful glow, and a course of four treatments will have you ready to walk the red carpet with your favourite stars!Nicole, an aesthetic doctor with six years of experience in the industry, believes that individual treatment solutions are crucial to accomplishing outstanding results.“I strive to attain the greatest results for each and every patient that I see. In some cases patients do not want to use injectables and I find these treatments a wonderful alternative,” adding that “this treatment is painless, relaxing, pampering but most importantly results driven.”

Step One: EMK Cleansing to purify the skin without stripping essential natural oils. Step Two: Exfoliating using an ultrasonic device which causes micro vibrations to remove and exfoliate dirt that is trapped between skin cells. Step Three: EMK Toning with a cotton pad to prepare the skin for maximum absorption and the gold molecules will stimulate cell absorption of EMK active ingredients. Step Four: Apply Gold leaf on the skin.Step Five: Apply EMK Stem Cell serum to enhance the

skin’s structural healing and the active ingredients deep into the dermis.Step Six: Apply EMK plant parental face mask for 15 minutes to restore the skins collagen and elastin and promote oxygen production. Step Seven: While the mask is working a firming neck massage, an EMK hand and arm treatment is performed helping you relax even more.Step Eight: Apply eye serum and EMK moisturiser and finish with an SPF to protect the skin.

With freezing temperatures and biting winds, winter can

really take its toll on your skin and hair. It brings more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. It also brings uncomfortable dryness. For some, the problem is worse than just a tight, dry feeling: it gets so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema. Being able to combat these re-actions to the seasons involves changing your beauty routine to salve, sooth and smooth away the winter months with perfect skin, hair and make-up.

The weather outside may be bleak, but your beauty routine shouldn’t have to be.

REWORK

Chapped UpThe chill in the air leaves our lips more prone to chapping and cracking. Keep your lips soft by always keeping a good lip balm handy. Look for products with conditioning ingredients, like petroleum.

Eight Hour Cream Nourishing Lip Balm:

WEATHERWINTER

Page 22: May/June, 2015

22 CELEB STYLES | May / June 2015 |

Tanned skin looks a bit ridiculous in the cooler months, so ditch the golden glow and opt for fresh, luminous, creamy pink blush instead. This blends easily into the skin and gives a naturally radiant flush.

Au NaturaleAfter a long humid summer, hair will be happy for the winter break. Cool air keeps fly-aways and frizz at bay naturally. Your hair should fall better and be more manageable during the cooler seasons too. With the weather on your side there’s no need to weigh down your tresses with heavy hair product. Let Mother Nature do the work for you. Keep your locks in tip top shape by trading your conditioner for a hydrating treatment once a week.

Even It OutAfter a long summer and too much time in the sun, dark patches might appear. Darker spots on the nose, cheeks, forehead and eyelids are a common result of too much time spent in the sun. The best way to even out skintone is with a gentle scrub that contains lactic acid combined with a plant-based skin lightener.

Swop OutMost often your make-up kit is still geared for spring and summer in mid-winter. This year, get it sorted before the colder weather sets in. Here’s what to replace:

During winter you need a bit more coverage to make skin

porcelain. Don’t forget the SPF!

Keep soft eye looks for warm days and embrace the sharp glamour of a clean winged eye. Team it with a bold berry lip and contoured cheeks for an edgy yet feminine look.

Red ReductionIce cold weather or wind often leaves you with an inflamed, red face. Luck-ily this is easy to camouflage. Use a green-tinted moisturizer. If the redness is confined to smaller areas, apply a colour-correcting concealer to those spots only and blend in.

Nourished NailsNails can become brittle during winter. Keep them well filed to avoid snags. Avoid fast-drying nail polish as they contain isopropyl alcohol (IPA) which cause nails to become brittle and flaky. Nourish your nails with a cuticle oil.

Soothing SerumsDry, tight and itchy skin will benefit from a hydrating, sooth-ing, calming serum. Serums are a concentrated way to get key ingredients into the skin. They can be layered on without adverse effects or degrading the efficacy of the ingredients. Choose a serum that hydrates and soothes and apply it before applying your usual moisturiser at night and during the day for a double dose of moisture. For a healthy supply of moisture that your skin craves always moisturise at night, like Beyonce: “I go to bed looking totally greasy. It’s not all glamour all the time,” she reveals.

Tear-Proof Eyes

Wintry winds can cause make-up meltdowns. Fight off sooty smudges and smears by applying waterproof mascara and use eyeliner and shadow on the upper lids only to reduce the risk of make-up migration.

Textured TressLimit the use of blow dryers and curling irons, but if you have to use them, apply a leave-in conditioner first, set it to a low heat and concen-trate on the roots. Rather work with your natural texture to keep hair from drying out.

Hydration StationMasks are not just for exfoliating and deep cleaning skin, they also hyper-hydrates in minutes and, even better, deliver an effective boost of moisture overnight for hair, body and face. Choose a mask that you can either tissue off after it has done its work or one that can be left on while you sleep at night.

BELLEZZA HAIR DESIGN

MEET OUR FAVOURITE STYLIST FROM

Dustin Coutts made his dream come true — he opened his own very stylish salon called Bellezza Hair Design.

Bellezza Hair Design, 2057, 2a East Road, Morningside, Sandton. Tel: (011) 029-7630 www.bellezza.co.za

Owner of Bellezza Hair Design, Dustin Coutts has owned Bellezza Hair for a year. Dustin chats to us on how he got started and what made him open his own salon.

How did you start Bellezza Hair Design and when?In the last 10 years I worked for two major salons. Since my days as an apprentice I wanted my own salon one day and after 10 years of hard work I finally got the opportunity to do it. What makes Bellezza so different from other salons?Bellezza has a totallly different energy compared to your salons in shopping centres. You are first welcomed by our amazing team where you feel at home from the start. The vibe is amazing but has a completely tranquil side to it at the same time. The unique designs where you are nestled between trees and stunning view of Sandton makes you feel as if you are away from the Joburg rush. Generally speaking it is a completely new and unique experience when getting your hair done. How long have you been a hairdresser?10 years. What or who inspired you to get into hairdressing and open your own salon? My first salon I worked at was Jeauval and I worked under Clinton Valjeaux, he is a great hairdresser and businessman and I got a lot of my inspiration from him and the way him and his father, Roy, run Jeauval as a business. What makes a great hairdresser? A great hairdresser has to love his/her job and have a strong passion for the industry. It is not an easy industry as you take on a lot of roles when dealing with clients. Your personal issues have to be put aside and your attention must be given to your clients. The hardest obstacle was working weekends and once you overcome that and love what you do you will be a great

hairdresser. What is the one item every client should have?A good thermal heat protector such as EVO Mister Fantastic to protect hair from heat styling tools used at home. What shampoo and conditioner do you recom-mend?The EVO range is great which has four families to suit the specific needs of each client. They are a luxurious brand that is sulphate, paraben, dea, tea and propylene glycol. As well as respecting the environment. What styling products do you suggest?EVO has amazing styling products that are easy to work with. My personal favorites are EVO ‘Haze’ which is a powder that gives hair insane volume and texture. EVO ‘Helmet’ hairspray which I take as the best hairspray I have used and EVO ‘Water Killer’ dry shampoo for your in-between days of shampooing, amazing smell and non stick How has the hair industry changed since you started? As I started the hair was sleek and smooth for ladies with a lot of solid colours and fringes. Guys were sporting the Mohawks at that stage or either growing it long. South African women have definitely become more daring, adventurous and free willed with their hair. Experimenting with colour, styling much bigger and natural flowing looks. Guys are more sophisticated and also experimenting with a lot of new styles. South African stylists have definitely caught up with the rest of the world and in my opinion we are some of the best stylists around. We have moved on from just being hairdressers to hair stylists and professionals.Name a few hair tips that you swear by?For me it is tips starting with home care. Caring for your hair at home is the most important as we generally only get to see clients once to twice a month. Starting with just combing conditioner through and to towel dry your

What is the best style you have ever done? I love these pictures when I just started doing hair as it was huge learning curves and got so much inspiration from everyone around me. Always good to look back to see where you have come from and started.

hair by just squeezing the water out with the towel and not drying it rough will keep the cuticle smooth and easier to style.Name the products you can’t live without? For me it is always quality shampoo, conditioner and great styling products. My hairdryer and brush is next.Have you got any advice for anyone want-ing to start in the industry?

Coming into this industry is not a simple career as most people think; you have to dedicate a lot of your time and energy. If you are an apprentice steal with your eyes, take everything you can from each stylist and develop your own technique from that. What is your favourite perk of the job?At the end of each client I get satisfaction to see my end result and look I created. Most of all seeing a client love their hair tops it off.

CHASECUTTING TO THE

Bored of staring at your own reflection in the mirror while waiting for clients to walk through the door? With a little savvy know-how, enthusiasm

and creativity you can transform your salon into a cash cow.

Imagine your salon packed to the rafters with clients from the second you open your doors to the moment you close them.

Imagine the turnaround you would generate if your appointment book was filled with new customers every, single day. Imagine what would happen if at least 60 percent of these existing clients pre-booked another appointment on their way out. While there's no magic wand you can wave to attract people into your salon, there are a few ways you can market yourself without incurring the cost of above the board advertising. Theo Myburgh of Spoilt Hair and Beauty shares 10 golden nuggets guaranteed to lead your salon to a pot of gold.

Word Of Mouth Marketing For every one customer that leaves your salon happy, you can get ten more in the door just through word-of-mouth referral. You’re only as good as your last job, this means that you have to make damn sure that every customer leaves your salon satis-fied, and that, in addition to returning themselves, they pass word on to their family and friends.

Be The Best Seller Remember you are the product so always put your best foot forward. Good customer care is vital. Always work professionally. Be punctual. Be polite and most of all, listen to and care about what your client wants.

Pre Bookings Looking after existing customers is just as important as attracting new ones. If you want a full appointment book, encourage clients to book their

next appointment when they leave. Maintain a client database and contact clients who haven't visited for a while. We found that the best system for the salon is ESP www.esponline.co.za. Business Cards, Reward Cards

And Brochures Business cards and brochures are a great way to distinguish your salon from competitors. They offer the benefit of being both visual and tactile representations of your brand and help clients keep your salon top of mind. Reward cards are a great addition to salons as they not only encourage loyalty among client but encourage clients to frequent your salon more often.

Marketing MattersEnsure your salon has an up-to-date, interesting and visually appealing website. This serves to re-assure potential customers of the salons professionalism and offers existing and new customers online bookings to make their lives easier. Blogs are also the perfect way to promote yourself and your salon.

Social Media The Internet has changed the way business is done. In today's modern age, no one must underestimate the value of social media. If you want your salon to become a viral sensation look no further than LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Ensure these accounts are kept up to date daily and include specials, promotions, up-coming events, photos, trends and new products.

Public Relations If your salon doesn't have its own marketing and/or PR company, then someone internally needs to invite both print journalists and web bloggers. This should include media who are in the hair and beauty industry, as well as media who produce publications that interest the salons target market.

VIPs All Round Regular events are essential to invite existing clients and new clients to have a personal experience of the salon. These can be anything from new product launches to a hair and fashion show. Combining these with charity events is a sure fire way to get great exposure for your salon. In addition to this, decorating the salon in seasonal themes can bring a topical and fun element to the team and clients, such as Halloween, Valentines, Easter and Christmas. Fashion Trends And Training Keeping up to date with trends and new techniques is essential to every stylist. These are constantly changing and evolving. The last thing you want is for a client to ask you for the latest style which you can't do. I believe as stylists we set trends and introduce new looks to our clients who wish to re-invent or refresh themselves.

Products Your salon should always be well stocked with the latest ranges. A large percentage of a salons turnover can be increased by good product sales. Having a few popular ranges across the board in terms of prices will ensure that there is something for everyone.

WHY CRM MAKESTHE CUT

Imagine if you could manage your appointments, record client details and keep an eye on

the performance of your salon in less time it takes for you to blowdry a head of hair! Thousands across the globe have computerised their businesses and are reaping the benefits. We pinned down Anisha Patel, owner of Midori Eco Salon in Sandton, Gauteng, and asked her the long and short of salon management software.

At what stage is my salon large enough to computerise? It’s never too small. In reality salons should be computerised from day one. The information generated by a computer system are the bricks with which you build.

What type of system should I buy — POS (Point

of Sale), CRM (Client Relationship Management) or Accounting package? The answer is CRM. A salon business is all about clients – how do we attract them into the salon, how well do we hold on to them and how many clients are we losing? POS does not allow you to build individual client buying history and most CRM systems have adequate accounting functions. CRM is a system that allows you to manage interactions with current and future customers. It often involves using technology to organise, automate, and synchronise sales, marketing, customer service, and technical support.

How much should I spend on a system? This is always a loaded question and the answer lies

Whether you have used salon management software before or not, every salon should have technology that best suits its staff and its requirements.

How can I implement a CRM system at my salon?• Make a strategic decision on what problems you want your CRM system to address, what improvements or changes it should bring in the business processes of the organisation.• Choose an appropriate project manager. Typically IT will be engaged, however a manager with a customer service/sales and marketing business focus should be involved, as the impact of the project will be mainly on the business side.• Ensure executive sponsorship and top management support.• Empower team members with the required authority to complete the tasks.• Select the correct implementation partner. They must have both vertical and horizontal business knowledge, as well as technical expertise.• Define key performance indicators that will measure the project’s success.• Use a phased approach. Work towards long-term enterprise-scale implementation through a series of smaller, phased implementations.

in how hard you want the system to work for you. First prize is one that gives you a full business system – from an electronic appointment diary, SMS and email marketing, client data base management, client loyalty programme, stock control, target setting, expenditure control, payroll and a profit and loss/profit protection function. Outright purchases are generally better than either rental programme or buying mod-ules separately simply because you never stop paying for rent-al/modular systems.

What kind of back-up support will I need? How long is a piece of string? The answer is as much as possible. Local

companies are normally able to provide quicker turnaround when problems do occur and the local programmes are as good as any available on the international market.

Where will I find software? Search My Salon Software on the internet, or ask product suppliers and colleagues in the industry.

Can I afford to computerise? Can you afford not to? The information you generate becomes the intellectual value of your business. Having up to date informa-tion on hand gives you total control. It also adds 20 percent to the market value of your business should you ever wish to sell.

BRISTLEBRILLIANCE FROM EVERY

When it comes to detangling and smoothing your hair not all brushes are created equally.

From paddle, round and dressing brushes to teasing combs and wide tooth wonders. From boar and horse hair to nylon and stainless steel bristles. From handles made of Ebony, Rosewood

and Beech to those made of plastic and polyacetal. With so many hair brushes on the market it's easy to get your tresses tangled in a knot deciding which is best suited to your hair type, length and condition. Truth is, there is far more to hair brushes than meets the eye and choosing the correct brush can literally mean the difference between strong shiny locks and broken dull strands.

Long In The ToothMost round brushes have nylon bristles. While these do the job of sliding through knots and minimising pulling, especially on thick hair, they don't have much impact on the overal condition and shine of your locks. "If you're looking for a brush that will smooth out cuticles, lift away dirt and distribute the oils from your scalp to the ends of your hair, experts recommend investing in a natural fibre bristle brush instead," says Chantelle Thackwray, owner of Fringe Vintage Salon in Cape Town. "The most commonly used material to prepare natural bristles of a brush is boar’s hair. Although more expensive (can cost several hundred rands), boar bristles can dramatically improve the health, texture and condition of your hair. Boar bristle brushing is a conditioning treatment that

adds shine. The unique structure of the boar bristle carries sebum – the oil produced by the scalp – from the scalp to the end of the hair shaft. By coating each hair strand with a tiny amount of sebum, a boar bristle brush repairs dry hair and adds lustrous shine. These bristles are also best for straightening and heat styling hair as they give you more control."

Different Strokes For Different FolksWhen selecting a hair brush, you need to take your hair texture and length into consideration, as well as your individual hair needs. "The flat brush is normally used for de-tangling hair, for example after sleeping or showering," says Chantelle. "A round brush can be used for styling and curling hair, especially by a professional stylist, often with a blow dryer. The longer your hair, the bigger the round brush should be. Blow dry fringes with a small to medium round brush while a paddle brush should be used to straighten hair, flatten long hair, and tame fly-aways. Combs are bet-ter suited to curls than straight locks and steer clear of plastic combs as they cause hair breakage. Keep in mind that the curlier your hair — the wider toothed combs and brushes you will need. Everyone should have a de-tangling brush for after wetting your hair and extra caution should be practiced when brushing hair that's wet or damp as this is when

BRILLIANCE FROM EVERY

Our expert, Chantelle Thackwray of Fringe Vintage Salon.

Glamour queens of the 1800s such as Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth and Katherine Hepburn all swore by boar bristle brushes to keep their locks glamorous.

The interior of Fringe Vintage Salon in Simon’s Town, Cape Town, celebrates an era gone but not forgotten.

Fringe Vintage Salon Address: 82 St Georges Street (Main Road),

hair is at its weakest." Brush Up On The Best

What tools does Chantelle recommend investing in? "The Wet Brushes are amazing de-tangling brushes and can be used safely on wet hair," she says. "The magic of the Wet Brush is in the specially formulated IntelliFlex bristles with SofTips. IntelliFlex bristles are thin, strong and very flexible. They have intelligent flexibility — flexible on one stroke and firm on the next. The adaptive flexibility of Intelliflex bristles combined with the gentle SofTips eliminates all tugging, tearing, pulling and ripping. No split ends, no hair loss. I am also loving the range of round blow dry brushes, paddle brushes and combs from GHD. They stock Carbon combs (hard rubber), which are really the best kind of combs out there. I find plastic combs pull the hair unnecessarily. Carbon combs have a wide-toothed design, which allows for delicate de-tangling on damp hair, which is fragile and more prone to damage. Vent brushes from DENMAN are also high on my list. Everyone should have a vent brush. They have vents or openings between bristles, which allow more heat from the blow dryer to get directly to the hair quicker, reducing heat damage. Denman Freeflow Vent brushes accelerate the blowdrying process by allowing warm air to circulate directly at root level. These brushes provide excellent grip and control, safely detangling all hair lengths and types without snagging."

Wigs, Extensions And AfrosWigs and hair extensions need extra TLC when it comes

to brushing. Chantelle recommends a special brush — one without the typical 'balls' on the ends of the bristles. "Choose a soft bristle brush to detangle your hair without damaging it. Brush at the bottom, as you would with your natural hair, detangling that area first before you move up to work on the top sections. Be gentle with you exten-sions too, as pulling will cause serious breakage, both to the extensions, as well as to your natural hair."

Hair Brushes Throughout HistoryHair brushes are not just a styling tool of the modern era. In fact, brushes have been in existence for as long as people have had hair. Centuries ago folk would use bone, porcupine quills, flint and shell fragments to brush their hair and assist in removing nasty critters like lice, mites and fleas. Evidence such as portraits, paintings and sculptures show that Ancient Romans and Greeks used brushes to style, curl and braid their hair, while excavations from Egyptian tombs have unearthed combs and brushes made of dried fish bone. Documents from the Vikings also show that men cared for their hair by using combs made of antler (from deer). The earliest United States patent for a modern hairbrush was by Hugh Rock in 1854. A brush with elastic wire teeth along with natural bristles — yes, you read right, elastic wire — was patented by Samuel Firey in 1870. In 1898, Lyda A. Newman invented an 'improved hairbrush', which allowed for easily cleaning and had bristles separated wide enough to allow for easy combing.

QA

How long does it take for relaxed hair to go natural?

QA

How can I get loose curls instead of my tight coils, without using chemicals?

This varies and depends on what products where used when ‘relaxing’ your hair. If you used a straightener or relaxer, this is a more permanent chemical process, and normally grows out and gets cut off over time or slowly reverts back to a wave or softer version of your natural curl. If you had a Brazilian Blowdry, and if it was a Brazilian Blowout, it should last three to four months, even up to 16 weeks if you are using the masque treatment and serum

recommended by them. It is also imperative to use a sulphate-free shampoo, so that the bonds of the treatment are not broken down (which will cause your hair to revert back to your natural curl). Always be careful of products that could be misleading, as some ‘sulphate free’ products have more sulphate in than what is actually recommended. Rather use the shampoo that is recommended by the brand of Brazilian Blowdry you have had done.

Q Why is my hair always greasy? I have to wash it every day?

There are various causes for greasy or oily hair. This could be from products being to heavy or rich for your hair type, your diet, genetics, underlying illness or hygiene. A

lot of times a dry scalp is the cause, because then the sebaceous glands become more active to make more natural oils to protect the scalp. To treat this problem, you need to have a balanced, healthy diet as well as make sure that you’re drinking enough water in a day, ensuring that your body is getting enough moisture. When shampooing your hair, avoid massaging your scalp, this will stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more natural oils. Rather use flat hands when shampooing and conditioning your hair. There are good products on the market for various types of oily hair conditions — I recommend that you first make sure that it is not a medical problem, then consult with your hairstylist who can recommend what is best suited for your particular hair type. Always stick to well known brands, and don’t fall into the habit of ‘over washing’ your hair.

ANSWERED...YOUR QUESTIONS

A moisturising shampoo and conditioner is always recommended for curly or very curly hair. Leave-in treatments and conditioners are awesome for this hair type, because they soften the hair as well as pump it with moisture, which controls frizz. The various argon oils that are now very popular and can be used along with your styling products, which, for this hair type have come a long way, since the ‘old days’ when there was literally nothing to use for curly, frizzy hair. They help a lot in giving definition to your hair and controlling frizz.Otherwise the best solution is doing a Brazilian Blowout, which is not a chemical based product, it does not break down the structure of your hair. It seals the cuticles of the hair, locking in natural moisture resulting in smoother, shinier, more manageable hair, and a much nicer curl.

Meet our expert, from Purple Pear Studio Charlene Windram

QI have just had my second baby and my hair is in very poor condition! I have split ends and it’s dry! Please help!

While you are pregnant your hormones come to a standstill, and this affects everyone differently. Some people are fortunate to have healthy, shiny, fast growing hair while they’re pregnant, while others have the complete opposite result! For your split ends I would recommend a good haircut, to get rid of the worst of the ends which cannot be restored, then a good split end treatment, which is a keratin-based product, specifically targeting your weakened ends, which

are now brittle and splitting. This treatment will seal the cuticles and prevent further split ends from happening. Then alternate your protein and moisture treatments, shampoos and conditioners so that you have a good balance of the two. Protein will strengthen brittle, and porous hair, and moisture will restore the shine and elasticity of the hair. If you are not sure how to do this, your hairstylist will be able to advise you which should be the best way to go about this.

Get your whole body into gear!

Looking after your hair and body isn’t as simple as having your six-week trim and

rubbing your favourite lotion on every morning. Looking and feeling healthy on the outside means you have to be healthy on the inside too. So follow some of our health tips to get your body into great shape…. from hair to toe!

Eat Smart For The Whole Body

It’s quite simple…. when you eat right, you don't just feel better, but look better, have more energy and provide your body with vital nutrients. The following foods will help keep your hair and body healthy:• Besides being rich in protein and Vitamin D (both are key to strong hair) the omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon are the true superstar. Your body can't make those fatty acids, which your body needs to grow hair. • Walnuts are the only type of nut that have a significant amount of omega-3 fatty acids and are rich in biotin and vitamin E, which helps protect your cells from DNA damage. • The iron, beta carotene, folate, and vitamin C in spinach help keep hair follicles healthy and scalp oils circulating.• Greek yoghurt is high in hair-friendly protein, vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid — an ingredient you'll often see on hair care product labels), and vitamin D. • Melon and citrus are rich in immune-boosting vitamin C, and some studies indicate that a C-heavy diet (from food, not supplements) helps prevent breast cancer.

• Rhubarb is rich in vitamin K, which helps activate three proteins involved in bone health and increases bone-mineral density.• An Italian study found that women whose diets included a lot of olive oil had a 30 percent lower risk of ovarian cancer.• Red and purple grapes (along with other dark fruits and vegetables) contain flavonoids, which experts say protect against heart disease, as well as cancer and brain-ageing.• Sweet Potatoes are great source of the antioxidant beta carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A — they will help protect and produce the oils that sustain your scalp

and are necessary for all cell growth, including hair. A deficiency can lead to dry, dull, lifeless hair and dry skin, which can flake off into dandruff.• Eggs are rich in biotin, a B vitamin essential for hair growth and overall scalp health.• Lentils are a great vegetarian source of iron-rich protein — protein is necessary for all cell growth, including hair cells.• Red, yellow, and green bell peppers are a colourful, delicious source of vitamin C, which is necessary for hair health.• Oysters are rich in zinc, a lack of which can lead to hair loss (even in your eyelashes), as

Yes you need those eight hours of shut eye a night — not just to make sure you don’t have bags under your eyes but to keep energy levels up and health in

check. Lack of sleep will also lead to loss of interest in yourself — which in turn affects the way you look (bad hair days included!).

Reduce Some StressStress management in your busy, active life plays an important role in keeping your body healthy. While you might not be able to avoid stress you can control it to avoid developing physical health problems, such as high blood pressure, weakened immune system, and mental issues like depression and lack of concentration. Stress also leads to hair loss, so do your best to manage it.

Get Your Daily ExerciseJust like a healthy diet, daily exercise is essential for a healthy body inside and out. It controls your weight, strengthens your bones and muscles, improves your mood and overall mental health and may add extra years to your life. Experts suggest you participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week.

Drink Plenty Of Water

Keeping well-hydrated is essential not only to your body’s health, but to its survival. Plus the more water you drink the better hair and skin you will have. Always keep a bottle of water handy during the day.

Vitamins Improve Your

LifestyleTaking vitamins is a great way to improve your lifestyle — after all, vitamins are substances our bodies can not make. Experts suggest some reasons why you should include vitamins into your daily lifestyle:• Vitamins perform key functions: Vitamin C builds immunity and connective tissue, Vitamin A enhances immunity and helps growth, B-vitamins are essential for energy and Vitamin D strengthens bones.• While a balanced diet should provide our complete vitamin quota, nutritionists argue that modern life often leaves us depleted.• Intensive agriculture, fast-growth crops and food processing means our food is significantly lower in minerals and vitamins than it used to be.• High-speed lifestyles leave many people gulping down pre-made meals and grabbing a coffee – not a recipe for nutritional balance.• Drinks like black tea and coffee can reduce mineral absorption while fizzy drinks and sugar contain almost no vitamins.• Chronic stress also depletes vitamin supply.

Beauty cannot be defined in words. It's about confidence. It's about the way you carry yourself. The way you rise up

to the challenge. The ability to light up a room with just one smile. Lorna Maseko-Lukhele is one of the most beautiful women you ever will meet. While she has all the trimmings of a super star — flawless skin, a gorgeous body and gentle eyes that look right into your soul — her beauty is not just skin deep. She's also a strong and successful woman, and that's one of the main reason she has danced into our hearts. The managing Director of Fabulous Productions — an eventing and concierge company — Lorna is an entrepreneur through and through. She's also a choreographer, MC and television presenter best known on Top Billing, one of the longest standing lifestyle magazine shows in the country. She's appeared on a number of other TV shows including 10 Over 10, Celebrity Master Chef South Africa, Afro Showbiz News, Glambition, The Weekender, I Love South Africa, ScreenTime With Nicky Greenwall, Zaziwa and was a judge on Season 2's So You Think You Can Dance (SA). In addition to her career behind the camera, Lorna — who grew up in Alexandra township is a ballet dancer and the very first ballet dancer of colour in South Africa. We managed to pin Lorna down in between her very colourful schedule to find out what her definition of beauty is.

How do you define beauty?I've always believed true beauty is innate, it's timeless and elegant and most times has nothing to do with material possessions. It has to do with what's inside.Who do you think is the most beautiful person alive today?I don't think there is one single most beautiful person in the world. I think different qualities make a person beautiful.Who would you say is your style icon? Jennifer Lopez at the moment. She has incredible dress sense and always dazzles on the red carpet with her high-fashion wares. Whether she's wearing a chambray jump suit to Craig's restaurant in West Hollywood, California, or a lace dress at the Nickelodeon's 28th Annual Kids' Choice Awards held at The Forum, she always looks polished.

What are your top beauty secretes? Exfoliating is one of the easiest ways of getting glowing skin. It detoxifies, brightens your complexion and gets rid of dead, dull skin cells to reveal healthy, younger skin. It also helps reduces fine lines and sun damage, improves skin tone and improves product penetration and treatment results. I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times but drinking enough water is key to great health and to looking good. Going to the gym not only keeps your body in good shape but is also a great way to de-stress. How do you keep your hair always looking so shiny and in such good condition? My hair dresser David from Dave's Imperium Hair Salon does an amazing job, all the time! I've known him for about seven years and that's how long he's been doing my hair. Thinking about it I'm sure it's been even longer. I love the fact that he is so focused on his craft and perfecting it, hence his salon keeps growing. What’s your biggest hair and beauty splurge? My hair costs about R6 000 every second month but good quality hair lasts a lot longer and always looks beautiful so I don't mind paying for quality. Signature fragrance? Lady MILLION by Paco Rabann. It's fresh, floral and woody — a beautiful sophisticated smell, with a touch of orange blossom. Who’s your favourite fashion designer?I have many — Thula Sindi, Zuhair Murad, David Tlale, Balenciaga, to name just a few.Do you enjoy dressing up or dressing down? It depends what mood I'm in. Being on TV I'm obviously always dressed up for shoots so when I'm at home I like to chill and keep it light.

What is the craziest hairstyle you’ve ever tried? Sadly, I don't do crazy! I'm quite conservative when it comes to my hair. It took me a long time to soften up to colour but now I can't get enough. I'm going blonder and blonder, which I love! When I was younger and couldn't afford proper quality hair my styles didn't look great. Look-ing back on old pictures, my hair just looked so crass! You’re known to sport a long style when many others go for shorter crops. I love long hair. I feel gorgeous and glamorous with long hair. In summer it's a little shorter than normal. What over-the-counter shampoo and conditioner do you use?I don't wash my hair myself. Everything is done at the salon. What’s your opinion on hair extensions? I think they're the best thing that was invented. They give you an option to change your hair as you wish — to constantly reinvent your look. I feel the same way about hair accessories.Tell us a bit about your TV presenting career. I love being on Top Billing. My experience on Celebrity Masterchef was just amazing. It's truly ignited my love for cooking and I'm looking at expanding that. I've started a series of events called Cooking With Lorna And Friends, which I love because it allows people to come and hone their cooking skills with some amazing chefs.Where do you see yourself in 10 years? My company Fabulous Productions will be in all the leading economies of the world, to be known as a successful entrepreneur, to host my own cooking show and write my own books, to start a family and have children, to keep giving back and continue enjoying life to the fullest.

Kendall Jenner is the hottest new model on the catwalk — she has featured in New York, Milan and Paris for Fashion Week season and is the

new face of Estee Lauder. Starting out very young on reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, we have watched Kendall grow into a beautiful young woman who is making a name for herself in the modelling world. We share some tips, secrets and facts about the star who is getting heads turning and jaws dropping these days.

Kendall’s Beauty SecretsShe’s making headlines and leaving us lost for words when it comes to her flawless beauty and professionalism on and off the runway. With gorgeous features, it doesn’t take much to look fabulous, but according to the 19-year-old, there are some beauty secrets which help her along the way. While she loves adding some shade to her lips, the star admits that she focuses most of her attention on her eyes when applying make-up. “I like a good eye,” she revealed during a recent interview. “Sometimes I like a little bit of cat-eye, or a wing is nice. And lots of mascara. I love mascara.” When travelling, Kendall says: "I need to have lip balm with me always, and if I’m on a plane I like to have my moisturiser with me because you get really dry on planes so it’s important to keep your skin hydrated. Otherwise, I just need to feel refreshed and clean so I try to wash my face before I go to bed, and I use an eye cream.” At the moment she’s also into neutral nail polishes which can still look okay when they chip a bit. However, when she’s on vacation, “I like colour. My favourite polishes are royal blue or red.” And what’s the secret in front of the camera — even when taking selfies? “Lighting is a big thing. If you’re not in the right light it just won’t work,” the supermod-el reveals, adding “I’m not into using too many filters, either. I like to keep it pretty natural — or black and white is always cool. She’s also ad-mitted to being old school and says she sticks to the oldest beauty trick in the book — getting a lot of sleep! Her favourite beauty products include Lip Lights lip gloss, Smashbox Foundation Primer, and MAC Eye Kohl, and her icon…? “Angelina Jolie,” she

says adding "She’s just ridiculously beautiful. And then I really love Rosie Huntington-White-ly's style, and I love Rihanna. I feel like she kills it all the time.”

Kendall’s Fashion TipsThis Jenner has managed to stand out from the rest of the family, and her sexy yet sophisti-cated look always has her looking elegant and age appropriate. Kendall has fronted campaigns for Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs and Estee Lauder and walked in catwalk shows such as Chanel, Givenchy and Dolce & Gabbana. As for her fashion tip, the star has a secret for surviving in the highest heels. "Yeah, it's kind of painful! I'll be honest. I have the longest toes in the world; they're spider toes. [But] the shoes are good. They're Manolo Blahniks. And they're high. So I switch off from one foot to another a lot, like this. [She crosses one foot behind the other in her now-signature pose.] You have to keep moving your feet!” she says.

Kendall’s Diet Secrets She does eat ice cream, but it’s generally healthy eating and training for the young star. The teen turns to detox to keep her body fit, healthy and looking good during the gruelling string of shows that she's been doing in some of the most high profile runways around the world. She revealed to E! News that she downs up to 12 cups of detox tea in a day — her tea of choice is a blend of lemon grass and green tea that she complements with a diet filled with lots of fruits and vegetables. She also takes in lean proteins to keep her energy up during the exhausting rounds of fashion shows that she needs to walk in back-to-back fashion weeks. And her best way to stay fit is running.

Kendall’s Gorgeous TressesStylist George Papanikolas, says: "For Kendall’s hair, I chose to do Balayage highlights instead of lightening the entire hair colour. Balayage highlights are hand painted, fine at the root, gradually getting thicker and heavier towards the ends of the hair. The maintenance is lower than an all-over colour because it only needs to be freshened up every three to four months.”

Save Your Strands With Our Expert Tips• Brushing your hair regularly is an important part of maintaining and rejuvenating your hair, especially when this process is associated with a scalp massage. When brushing, however, it’s important not to damage your locks by keeping the following in mind:• Hair strands are incredibly fragile and prone to breakage when they’re saturated with water, since the protective cuticle is slightly raised. Never brush your hair or untangle while wet as this will lead to hair breakage. • For slightly damp hair always use a wide-tooth comb and don’t pull too hard on your hair.• Always brush your hair first thing in the morning. The natural oils from your head that accumulate overnight are

more abundant before exposed to sunlight and chemicals. Brushing before your day begins helps comb through all these natural oils, distribut-ing them down your hair shaft, which helps them condition your hair natural-ly.• That age old advice of brushing your hair 100 strokes before bed goes out the window with research proving that when it come to brushing, less is more. Too much brushing leads to friction on hair causing breakage and cuticle damage. This makes the hair frizzy and lustreless.• Brush your hair in slow easy strokes for at least three to five minutes twice a day to stimulate keep your hair healthy and shiny.• Always brush from the ends working your way to the roots. If the brush feels like it is stretching or breaking your hair; it probably is.

Did You Know?• Brushing your hair and scalp daily eliminates waste materials from your hair including uric acid crystal depos-its, catarrh and other acids and other impurities that gather and stick to the scalp.• Studies on hair also show that comb-ing hair leads to loss of protein which is thought to be small parts of the hair cuticle chipping away.

• Regular brushing helps stimulating the blood capillaries, in turn increasing the blood circulation and transportation of nutrients and oxygen to the stem, root and bulb of the hair and stimulates various oil and hormone producing glands. • Combs and brushes should be washed weekly. Remove all hair and other materials on the brush or comb before soaking in hot water and dish detergent for 20 minutes before rinsing.
