Museums on both sides of the Atlantic are celebrating the 400th anniversary of a famous voyage.

On 16 September, 1620, 102 passengers, called “Pilgrims”, left England for the New World. They were on a ship called the Mayflower, which arrived in Massachusetts on 9 November.

Winter WeatherThe weather was much colder than in England: there was lots of snow in November! So the Pilgrims stayed on the ship all winter.

There wasn’t enough food or clean water. More than 52 passengers died of pneumonia or tuberculosis. Finally, in March, the Pilgrims built cabins on land.

SquantoAn Indian named Squanto helped the Pilgrims adapt to their new environment. In November, 1621, they had small houses and enough food for the winter. So they invited 90 Indians to a big party. Everyone ate and drank for three days. It was the first Thanksgiving! n
