Our Trip to Morocco – Easter 2018

After a three and a half hour flight, we arrived at

Marrakech Airport where we had to wait in

frustratingly long queues, we just wanted to get

out and start exploring. Eventually, we managed

to get out of the airport where we met our transfer

who took us to our Riad.

The streets leading to the riad were narrow so we

walked from the taxi drop off point to the riad.

Our luggage was loaded onto a cart and pulled

by a porter who we followed amongst the

evening hustle and bustle. Our first impression of

Riad Tzarra, was that it looked like a very plain and

basic building with a wooden door and no

windows. However, when we stepped inside, it

looked like a small palace! In the courtyard there

was marble flooring with palm trees and a little

pool, there was no roof so it was very bright and

warm in the day. The rooms were situated around

the courtyard in traditional Moroccan layout.

In the morning our first venture through the

labyrinth of streets armed with a map and

instructions from the riad manager was extremely

daunting. The myriad of stalls in the souks were

packed with hordes of locals as well as tourists,

there were also lots cats slinking stealthily around

the place. Motorbikes roaring through the souks

and alleyways every second of the day didn’t

help with trying to stay together and finding our

way. We also saw the big market square where

many snake charmers and traditional entertainers

were showing off their talents and impressing

tourists. We had a filling lunch at the Nomad

restaurant, then we went to the recently restored

Secret Garden. We had great fun playing hide

and seek in the garden, relaxing in the sun and

smelling the beautiful herbal plants. In the

evening we ate a delicious dinner on the terrace

of Le Jardin restaurant, we started to notice a

theme for food now, tagine and couscous!

The next morning we set off to Badhia Palace to see

the storks nested on the palace ruins, they were huge

and it was absolutely amazing to see them. We had

an immensely fun morning exploring the grounds, the

underground tunnels and the lookout points. After

lunch we went shopping in the souks to buy a

Moroccan chess set and a small guembri (traditional

instrument), it took ages to find the guembri. To start

with, the souk owner quoted a ridiculously high price,

we managed to negotiate it down to a quarter, the

souk owners just didn’t want to let us go without

buying things so they had to agree to our requests.

On the final day in Marrakech we left the riad bright

and early to avoid the two hour queues for entry to

the Majorelle Gardens. This was a vibrant place with

lots of different plants, pots, ponds and sculptures, all

designed by the late Yves Saint Laurent. There was

also an exhibition of his ‘Love’ theme art work year

by year up to 2007, he died in 2008. After lunch we

went back to the riad to prepare for the next leg of

our trip to the Atlas Mountains. That evening we had

dinner in our riad because we didn’t want to be tired

the next morning for our departure to the mountains.

After a one and a half drive from Marrakech, we

arrived at the small village of Imlil in the Atlas

Mountains. Our driver dropped us off at the end of

the road with our rucksacks and we walked up a

winding, rocky path to the guest house which we

were staying at. Luckily we had a mule to carry our

bags up for us. We left our bags in our room then ate

a delicious lunch on the terrace where we had a

stunning view of Mount Toubkal. In the afternoon we

explored the village where we saw little houses

perched on the mountainside, mountain goats with

their kids, chickens, mules and bulls. We came across

a shop selling traditional Berber rugs which were

handmade by the local Berber women. The

shopkeeper persuaded us to buy a giant rug and in

typical Moroccan tradition we had to bargain and

negotiate the price down. We took it easy on the first

day because we were getting used to the altitude.

The next morning we woke up early for our first

mountain trek. We both felt excited and nervous

as we started climbing the dangerous rocky paths

with our guide, Ibrahim. Along our journey we

saw amazing views of the snow-capped

mountains and streams running down from them.

At noon we stopped for a wonderful, freshly

cooked picnic on the mountain side next to a

river. After lunch we splashed water from the

stream onto our legs, it felt very refreshing! We felt refuelled and energised to

trek again. Although we had a mule if we became too tired to walk, Tuneesh

and I didn’t use it because we felt sorry for it, they assured us that it was well

looked after but we just didn’t want to sit on it. We relaxed on the terrace

later that afternoon. That day we trekked 10km and went to an altitude of

1,800m.

The next day we had another early start with

breakfast at 8am to meet Ibrahim at 9am to go

trekking into the valley. Parts of the valley which

had a lot of streams flowing through were

lusciously green with lots of different plants and

trees. We saw walnut trees, apple blossom trees

and cherry trees. We walked for over 11km this

day and went up to an altitude of 2,200m, that’s

over half of the height of Mount Toubkal! We really

enjoyed trekking and it didn’t feel like we were walking for hours and hours,

we wanted to go to the summit but our parents said we could possibly do

that when we are older. We enjoyed relaxing on the terrace again that

afternoon.

The next day we felt a bit upset because we were

going leave in the afternoon. We spent the time that

we had left relaxing in the sun on the terrace, we

reminisced about our adventures on this holiday and

it was ever so different to our usual beach holidays.

We would quite like to do an adventure holiday

again.

Something fishy – By Jack (FI)

It was a sunny, Wednesday morning and I had

to go to the launderette because it was

Washing Wednesday. I went to the

launderette and I sat on a chair and I was

soooo bored so I read a book.

Suddenly, I saw something shining in the machine. Was

it a fish? It can’t be can it? I crept.

‘Wow! There are so many things, do I own so much?’

I put my hand in the machine, the water

was warm and I was curious, so I swam into

the machine.

I was shocked to see the hundreds of multi-

coloured sock fish.

‘Are these mine?’

I swam around enjoying all the fish until

I saw the denim shark. Suddenly, he

was behind me so I hid behind some

pipes. I saw the door of the machine

but the shark snapped at me so I

swam as fast as I could.

I finally got out slowly. I tried to touch them.

Suddenly, a voice said,

‘I think those are mine!’ boomed the shark.

Kindergarten told the school the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They

showed us the caterpillars they had drawn and told us about the caterpillars they

have in the classroom. We are all looking forward to the day when the butterflies

emerge from their chrysalises after the metamorphosis from caterpillars. There is

a life cycle of a butterfly sheet on the next page for you to colour.

Lower III Soloists’ concert

Zahra (flute), Anaisha (flute), Vikram (piano), Maanav

(Clarinet), Junaid (violin) and Theo (flute) performed with

confidence and musicality during assembly on Friday. Their

performances were enjoyed by the parents, staff and children.

Congratulations to all the children who have performed in

public this year. We look forward to the Lower School soloists’

concert next Friday.
