The path of entrepreneurship has distinct peaks and valleys, so here are 10 quotes to keep you motivated for wherever you are in the marathon.

1. "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." -

- Benjamin Franklin

Franklin, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, was also one of the most successful business entrepreneurs in America of his time with his printing press. His Poor Richard’s Almanac is still a business book to be relished today with timeless wisdom about wealth and planning. One of the success-building principles is proper planning. Get a plan and know where you’re going.

2. "Quality is not an act, it is a habit." -- Aristotle

As an entrepreneur, you need a winning strategy based on a quality service offering. Quality doesn’t develop overnight. Through relentlessly putting your best into everything you do, you’re sure to finish the marathon of success.

3. “You want to be extra rigorous about making the best possible thing you can. Find everything that’s

wrong with it and fix it.” -- Elon Musk

How is quality achieved? By constantly improving. Musk is one of the most brilliant risk-taking entrepreneurs in the market and he says this comes from constant feedback on how you can improve the quality of something. Live it, learn it and do it for success.

4. “I think failure is nothing more than life's way of nudging you that you are off course. My attitude to failure is not attached to outcome, but in not trying

at all.” -- Sara Blakely

How could a recent failure you’ve experienced open up the doors for a different opportunity? Always see the ways that mistakes or failures are trying to re-shape your product or service to improve.

5. "The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake -- you can't learn anything from being

perfect." -- Adam Osborne

Making mistakes is part of the marathon. You trip, you fall down, but you get back up and keep going. Those stumbles and mistakes can be the most important thing you ever do as they lead to making everything better. You get better from failures -- products get better from improving on shortcomings. You can always do better by learning from the mistakes.

10 Quotes to Get You Through the Marathon of Entrepreneurship

Being a successful entrepreneur is about

approaching your success journey as a

marathon, not a sprint. However, if you’ve

actually run a marathon, you know the high

of the excitement at the starting line and the

low of mile 18 when you think you just can’t

take one more step.

Page 5: May2014

5

6. "Entrepreneurship is the last refuge of the

troublemaking individual." -- Natalie Clifford Barney

Maintaining the entrepreneurial spirit is an important step in the marathon. Have some fun, stir up some trouble, be a disruptor if you feel like it -- that’s where the magic happens. Go start causing some good-natured trouble in your industry.

7. "You are not your resume, you are your work." --

Seth Godin

What people have or haven't done in the past doesn't always determine whether they will be successful entrepreneurs. Don’t fixate on a perfect resume, just be prepared to learn from your mistakes and share your true work with the world.

8. "I like thinking big. If you're going to be thinking anything, you might as well think big." -- Donald

Trump

Never think of yourself as being too small to carry out a great idea. There are countless numbers of successful

people who got their start from a much humbler set of circumstances than your own. Never let that be an excuse to stop or not take action to begin with -- there’s always a way, find it!

9. "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other people's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and

intuition." -- Steve Jobs

This is the why of your marathon. Why are you an entrepreneur? Why are you even in this race? Don’t start running unless you know what you’re running for. What awaits you at the finish line? Knowing that answer and being true to your desires will see you out in the low times to get you through to the successful end.

10. “Chase the vision, not the money, the money will

end up following you.” -- Tony Hsieh

Hsieh’s quote says it all.

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." -- Benjamin Franklin

Next time you find yourself trying to break the ice, try out this knee-slapping one-liner: A man walks into a McDonald’s and attempts to sue for $1.5M because he was only given one napkin.

What, not ROFLing? That’s because this is no joke—it’s an actual lawsuit against one of America’s largest fast-food restaurants, which has been the target of some of the most (in)famous lawsuits during the past few decades.

Once again, we’ve combed over the nation’s most outrageous, foolish lawsuits yet for April’s Most Ridiculous Lawsuit of the Month Poll! Read more below and cast a vote for which of these lawsuits you think is the most ridiculous:

Black Out Jack California resident, Mark Johnson, is attempting to sue The Downtown Grand in Las Vegas after having a rough night at the Blackjack tables during Super Bowl weekend. How rough? $500,000 worth of bad busts and disastrous double downs. According to Johnson, he was “blackout drunk”. He claims the casino over-served him with free drinks, causing him to dip deeper and deeper into his wallet while he was visibly drunk. Think his

lawsuit is legitimate, or simply a roll of the dice?

The Nap-King Webster Lucas is suing a California McDonald’s for only supplying him with one napkin after he ordered a Quarter Pounder Deluxe. This crisis of value-sized proportions

apparently caused Lucas “undue mental anguish” and he is suing for $1.5 million. With that kind of money he could buy an entire McDonald’s franchise of his own (dare we speculate a rival Burger King?), or at least a lifetime supply of napkins.

No Good Deed Goes Un-Litigated Area rescue workers saved Roy Ortiz’s life during the Denver-area floods last September. Their reward for risking their lives? A proposed lawsuit for $500,000! Ortiz claims that his pleas were ignored while trapped upside-down in his car during the historic Colorado rainfall. Is his lawsuit legitimate or ridiculous?

Is Ronald McDonald going through a midlife crisis or just staying up with the times? McDonald's announced yesterday that the burger chain's 51-year-old mascot is getting a makeover and joining social media for the first time.

The clown's new look isn't particularly fashion forward, though Ronald does ditch his jumpsuit for cargo pants and a vest. The mascot is also picking up a red blazer and bowtie "for special occasions." His new clothes were designed by Ann Hould-Ward, who won a Tony Award for herBeauty and the Beast costumes.

The redesigned Ronald McDonald will be appearing in television ads and promotional materials later in 2014. McDonald's restaurants owners and operators will also have the option to incorporate the revamped mascot in design elements in the coming years.

More noticeable than Ronald's new clothing is his social media debut.

While he won't have his own account, the clown tweeting through the #RonaldMcDonald hashtag.

"Selfies… here I come! It’s a big world and now, wherever I go and whatever I do...I’m ready to show how fun can make great things happen,” said Ronald McDonald in a statement.

New clothes, hashtags, selfies – is Ronald in touch with changing times, or just desperate for attention? The old-school icon has recently been the

subject to mockery by way of Taco Bell's commercial in which men named 'Ronald McDonald' endorsed the Tex-Mex chain's breakfast menu items such as the Waffle Taco.

Meanwhile, the "real" Ronald McDonald has been struggling to stay relevant as McDonald's sales slipped in the first quarter of 2014. The chain announced Tuesday that same-store sales in the U.S. decreased 1.7 percent in the first quarter.

Midlife Crisis? Ronald McDonald Gets a Makeover, Joins Twitter

LinkedIn, the job-hunting and career-networking site, is beginning to roll out photo sharing via mobile for all 300 million of its members.

LinkedIn introduced photo sharing last spring, but it was confined solely to desktop. Now users will be able to add photos their updates from their mobile phones from the LinkedIn app.

Skeptical on photos? A LinkedIn profile with a photo is 11 times more likely to be viewed and updates with a photograph get 5 times more shares, Nicole Williams, LinkedIn’s career expert said. With stats like that, and with a competitive job market, photos are how you can set yourself apart and offer a glimpse into your personality and work ethic.

So, what kind of photographs should you add and which should you save for your private Facebook page?

For starters, Williams says to avoid

personal photos and keep it professional. If you’re adding photos of your vacation to the Florida Keys, that is time spent that a potential employer, investor or client could be learning about your professional background.

Add photos of your work or your team’s work. Add photos of you meeting interesting people or giving presentations. Just make sure if you are posting photos of colleagues, you get their permission. If you’re sharing a photo of an awesome Excel spreadsheet, make sure to obscure sensitive information.

Not only can people add photos to their profiles, but businesses can too. Photos highlighting a firm’s personality can go a long way in attracting new business.

(Accountants have fun, too!)

As of now, the photos are only visible as part of your status updates. There are no separate albums for photos.

What Types of Photos Should You Share on LinkedIn?

I found out about an opportunity through a friend I am enjoying the new experience thus far and excited to move forward. Q: Who is the one person that helped to make you who you are today? Although many people have contributed to and influenced who I am today (especially my parents and family), each basketball team I coach holds a special place in my heart. My teams help me grow, mature and really think about how small actions and words can make such a difference in someone's life. Q: What do you like most about working in the Heart of the Valley area? The best part about working in the Heart of the Valley area is that the people are hard working, kind and always enjoy passing on a smile. Q: What is the worst job you’ve ever had? An assembly line position I had in college was probably the least fun job I've had. I found out very quickly that I needed to keep my mind busy.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

From childhood, Kevin Eismann knew what his passion was in life: to run businesses and help others pursue their dream of running their own business. Accordingly, his

focus in law was on business law and his legal knowledge was augmented by a Master’s in Business Administration. Since 1996, in addition to working 50+ hours at his “day job” as a business attorney, he has started and managed several small businesses in his spare time. These business interests have intentionally been in a wide variety of industries. Some of these ventures were successful and some were not. However, each one taught valuable lessons on what worked, and what didn’t, in successfully managing and growing a business. In 2003, Kevin decided to leave the financial comforts of being a partner with a well-established law firm to pursue his dream of running his own firm. He believed that the only effective way to implement his vision of how a law firm should be run was to be completely removed from the constraints of a 10-partner management team and start from scratch with a new paradigm. The core components of this new paradigm consisted of industry focus, heavy investments in systems, technology, people and predictability of fees.

Since its inception, in 2004, Epiphany Law has grown rapidly, both in terms of number of employees and financial results. This growth has resulted from Epiphany Law’s unique business approach. Epiphany Law started as a “Business Law Boutique” and business law continues to be the heart and soul of their practice. Since opening their doors, however, they’ve significantly grown two other areas of deep expertise: litigation and estate planning. Attorneys and staff apply the same efficient use of people, systems and technology to provide in-credible service, superior work produce, and predictable pricing.

High demand for quality legal services quadrupled the size of the firm. Its growth led to a relocation of the firm from its rented office space to a newly constructed location in October of 2006. Since then, the firm has grown to seven attorneys and fourteen total staff, and Epiphany Law named its first partner, Katie Blom, in early 2013. Epiphany Law is guided by a strong vision and unwavering value system – one which is not hung on a wall as a statement to customers, but rather lived by the individuals within the firm. It has adopted customer service best practices, which include no screening of calls, zero call and appointment wait time, same-day returned calls, and project timeliness. Along the way, Epiphany Law has never forgotten that any business is only as successful as the community that supports it. To give back to the community that has supported us, we have volunteered on countless boards, held volunteer positions, and pledged volunteer support to numerous charities.

April 15th might be the most stressful day of the year for business owners racing to get their taxes filed — and certainly for accountants racing to make hundreds or even thousands of clients happy. Once the madness of Tax Day subsides, however, most of us put the thought of W-2s and 1099s and deductible expenses far out of sight and even farther out of mind. Which makes sense — after those Form 1040s are finally shipped off to the IRS, everyone deserves to celebrate (or mourn, depending on their tax liability). But just because Tax Day is over doesn’t mean you should neglect your particular situation until next spring when the stressful cycle starts all over again. This year, be proactive and get a head start on next year’s taxes by following these Q2 preparation tips. 1. Stay organized. Keeping track of retirement contributions, deductible expenses, and charitable donations is much easier with a clean early year slate. Start a filing system now and stick to it throughout the year to make life less chaotic next spring. 2. Assess your withholding levels. Did you get a big tax refund in 2014? You’re likely having too much withheld — essentially lending the government interest-fee money throughout the year. If so, fill out a new W4 and increase the number of exemptions you claim. Did you owe the IRS extra above and beyond what was withheld from your paycheck? Decrease the number of exemptions you claim so the same scenario won’t repeat itself next year. 3. Get your health insurance house in order. The uncertainty surrounding the Affordable Care Act continues — especially now that everyone is anxiously

waiting to see how it will actually perform. In February, the employer mandate was delayed again until 2016 for medium-sized businesses (50 to 99 workers). And companies with more than 100 employees are required to offer only 70% of their full-time workers coverage in 2015 instead of 95%. But the individual penalty for non-coverage — 1% of yearly household income or $95 per person — is definitely in effect in 2014. Don’t wait any longer to develop a plan of action to secure health insurance for yourself and your employees. 4. Consider making home or business improvements. Whether it’s energy upgrades or technology investments, many improvements completed this year can yield lucrative tax breaks. (We all have our fingers crossed that the Senate will raise the maximum amount of depreciation allowed under IRS Code Section 179 from $25,000 back to $500,000, where it was from 2010-2013.) Beyond the tax benefit, investing in your home or business is a smart way to spend money. 5. Work with your financial advisor to make investments more tax-efficient. Paying close attention to the types of investments in tax-deferred or tax-heavy accounts can mean the difference between owing thousands of dollars and getting a hefty refund next Tax Day. Talk to your financial advisor soon (after they go on vacation, of course) to get a money-saving plan in place now.

TAX DAY IS OVER - TIME TO CELEBRATE! (AND START PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR)

Long hours and hard work aren't the only

reason you or your employees might be

dragging.

The popular image of the business burnout involves somebody who's been busting their hump too hard for too long. It's an image of a somewhat virtuous fatigue, and something brought on by hard, hard work--to the victim's own detriment. But new research suggests that this is only one version. Your employees (or you, for that matter) might begin showing the sure signs of burnout- exhaustion, cynicism, irritability, and most importantly a lack of productivity--for other reasons.

The report, published in the journal PLOS ONE (and recently covered by the Association for Psychological Science) studied 429

employees at an academic institution to analyze patterns in burnt out employees and their coping methods at work. The findings suggest that there are at least three types of burnout.

"Frenetic" burnout is the stereotypical version

described above, defined by workers who just have too much on their plate. These employees generally adopt a negative tone, venting about their workload.

"Under-challenged" burnout, however, speaks to employees who plainly feel like they aren't getting much satisfaction out of their work. Employees experiencing this sort of burnout tend to "cognitively avoid" their work, distancing themselves from what they consider an unrewarding experience.

"Worn-out" employees are those who struggle with the stress of the day-to-day and ultimately choose to neglect their work because of those pressures.

The study found that 15 percent of employees in the study experienced frenetic burnout, 9 percent experienced under-challenged burnout, and 21 percent were worn-out.

The study's implications? Primarily, they're a reminder that employees might flame out for reasons other than failure to ensure work-life balance.

Making sure they are facing work that truly engages them--or, alternatively, that you're not putting them too far out of their comfort zone--will also keep employees from developing negative attitudes about their work. And on the hiring front, the concept of under-challenged burnout points to the potential issues with hiring overqualified candidates for vacant positions.

Because of the Heartbleed vulnerability that rocked the online world last week, security should be top of mind for anyone who uses a computer. But changing your passwords for ALL online portals shouldn’t be the only critical action you undertake, as the extent of the Heartbleed bug isn’t entirely known yet — and any password used on

numerous sites could have been compromised. Even the strongest passwords are vulnerable to the complicated algorithms employed by hackers that can deduce login information via brute force attacks. And over the past 12 months, many high-profile sites, including Evernote, LivingSocial and Drupal, have had encrypted passwords stolen. In the wake of the Heartbleed vulnerability, Inc. even announced that “the password is dead.” So what can you do to enhance your online security? Consider two-factor authentication, basically a two-tiered login system utilized by many high-profile websites. You enter a password and then confirm your identity via a code or token delivered by text message, phone call or biometric criteria like a fingerprint or recognition tool. If it sounds like science fiction, well, that’s because it is. But with cyberattacks growing increasingly common (and increasingly complicated), the idea carries significant weight — especially to those worried that their bank account, Social Security, or other personal information has been hacked. How does two-factor authentication work? 1. First, you need a strong, secure, unique password — one that you’ve changed in the last week since the Heartbleed vulnerability went public. It doesn’t cost anything (nor do the bevy of password management tools available to corral them), only takes a few minutes and still serves as the basis of all online security. 2. Second, on any site that utilizes two-factor authentication, ACTIVATE IT! Plenty of choices exist for the type of second factor to set up. Your smartphone is the most ubiquitous and easiest-to-use option. Google, PayPal and many banking institutions employ codes sent to you via text message or voicemail that you then enter to confirm your identity.

3. Other more advanced second factors abound — and will become more common. The fingerprint scanner built into Apple's iPhone 5S; facial and voice recognition software; USB devices that, when plugged in, enter a virtual password; tokens with LED screens that can create a unique code; and even bracelets that monitor your pulse as a form of sign-in. Unsure whether your information was compromised? Overwhelmed by the idea of changing all your passwords? We take online issues like Heartbleed seriously and we’re committed to improving productivity and enhancing efficiency so that you can achieve your business goals. Cellcom Partners with Telcare to Offer Diabetes Management Solution Cellcom has teamed up with Telcare, Inc. to offer an integrated wireless solution that enables people with diabetes, their families, and their care team to better manage the condition. The world’s first cellular-enabled blood glucose meter, manufactured by Telcare, is now available throughout the state of Wisconsin from Cellcom. The initiative was led by Patrick D. Riordan, Cellcom’s president and CEO, and John R. Dwyer, Jr., Telcare’s chairman and a native of Appleton, Wis. “Mobile and digital health options are fast becoming feasible solutions for monitoring and managing an array of conditions and overall health,” said Riordan. “By combining our technologies, Cellcom and Telcare are able to offer a tool that can drastically improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes.” Telcare’s FDA-approved glucose meter transmits each test result to a secure server using Cellcom’s cellular network and provides instant feedback and coaching to patients. Caregivers and physicians can access the data online and optional smartphone applications allow patients to review their information in depth or connect with family members. The device itself does not require additional hardware, data plans, or a smartphone, making it an easy solution regardless of

technical knowledge. “Telcare’s solution has been shown to improve adherence to diabetes testing and to reduce the cost of diabetes to patients, employers, and insurers,” said Dr. Jonathan Javitt, Telcare’s CEO and chief medical officer. “Now parents can spend less time worrying about a child at school and adult children can have new peace of mind when attempting to care for elderly parents with diabetes.” According to the American Diabetes Association, diagnosed diabetes cost the U.S. around $245 billion in 2012, including $176 billion for direct medical costs for the disease and its complications. Diabetes also contributes to $69 billion in indirect medical costs every year, including costs associated with absenteeism and reduced productivity. Employers, healthcare providers or health plan providers are encouraged to contact Cellcom at [email protected] to learn more about deploying this solution within their organization or network. Visit www.cellcom.com/telcare for more information.

Seven chimpanzees used an improvised ladder from a tree to scale a wall and briefly escape their enclosure at the Kansas City Zoo on Thursday, a zoo official said. One of the chimps apparently pulled a log or a branch and leaned it against the wall of the enclosure, giving the primates a leg-up to the top, zoo director Randy Wisthoff said. The animals did not have any contact with zoo visitors, as they escaped into an area reserved for zookeepers, he added. There are 12 chimps in total at the zoo, which was closed after the incident. "We had a ringleader," Wisthoff said. "He got up on the log and got some others to join him." Using food to entice them, the zookeepers herded the wayward chimps back into an indoor enclosure. The chimps were on the loose for around an hour.

Wisthoff said zoo staff regularly checks trees in the area of the chimpanzees for fallen limbs but in this case a chimp apparently pulled a log or large limb out of a tree. "Chimps are so much stronger than humans," Wisthoff said, adding that they are also very smart.
