ALLEGRO CLASSICAL WELCOMES

SALAMANDRE p. 15

Salamandre produces programs built around original and unpublished works on CD, producing records that are as beautiful to view as they are to hear. French music and works with narrator are welcome, but the label doesn’t wish to specialize and is also open working with young, talented musicians. Salamandre comes to Allegro Classical via New Arts International.

L’ENCELADE p. 19

L’Encelade is a newly created label specializing in Baroque-style keyboard music. The label’s aim is to introduce people to new repertoires, new scores, and new interpretations, to encourage a new approach that brings together musicology, authenticity, and the sheer pleasure of music. L’Encelade comes to Allegro Classical via New Arts International.

AYROS p. 20

Ayros is a new label promoting select esteemed musicians, and is the main label of Contrasto Armonico. It will be managed by Marco Vitale and Contrasto Armonico’s team, with the support of the highest recording standards and graphic layouts. Contrasto Armonico recordings available for Brilliant Classics had great success, including raves in Gramophone, FonoForum, Fanfare, and American Record Guide, and built a landmark and reference for the Italian Handel repertoire. Ayros comes to Allegro Classical via New Arts International.

HERISSON p. 22

Hérisson is a new independent label trying to offer new spaces in classical music, thanks to a very peculiar approach. Created in 2008 in Paris by sound engineer Denis Vautrin, harpsichord player Mathieu Dupouy, and bassoonist Fany Maselli, the label has been able to stand out for its repertoire, artists, and recording quality. Contrasting a suffocating market, its projects are guided by curiosity towards rare works, the challenge of unusual sound experiences, and new encounters. Hérisson comes to Allegro Classical via New Arts International.

RASKATOV: Obikhod • Praise

This music was written for the Hilliard Ensemble, one of the world’s finest vocal chamber groups, and sets five liturgical texts from a number of services of the Byzantine rite. “Obikhod” (2002–2003) also sets liturgical texts and was written for the same performers, but

this time with the accompaniment of string orchestra. Raskatov’s music is extraordinarily difficult to describe, but some constants in his work include an ear for delicacy of sound and beauty of color as well as a penchant for silence, or — more precisely — near-silence.

Pianist Hanna Devich (of the former Devich Trio) is going solo and absolutely loves it! Hanna is also a piano teacher, and when she was searching for music for her students she discovered the music of Ludovico Einaudi. Her interpretation is very dynamic and multi-layered, which makes this beautiful music even more interesting. Ludovico Eunaudi is very well known, in particular for his music for French film The Intouchables, and his music has been used worldwide for TV shows and movies.

cantoLXFrank Agsteribbe: conductor

A collection of solo vocal works by Girolamo Frescobaldi and John Cage

This recording sets up a surprising confrontation between the radical innovations in singing style for solo voice at the beginning of the 17th century, and those of the second half of the 20th century. Although these two periods differ greatly in sound and aesthetics, each saw a search for new possibilities, and for surprising — even shocking — singing styles. cantoLX is a young professional vocal ensemble based in Luxembourg. The main repertoire consists of Baroque music, but also includes Renaissance, contemporary, and 19th-century music. It is a basic statement of the group to work from a kernel of six soloists, extending to 12 or 16 to form a chamber choir, and developing up to 40 professional singers to form a romantic oratorio choir. Having this regular kernel of soloists guarantees that a very specific sound is present in all formations.

As English song came into full flower at the turn of the 20th century, Parry’s substantial contribution to the genre became somewhat buried. Now, Iain Burnside and his singers rediscover what has been forgotten by historical accident. Combining an innately English sensibility with a technical fastidiousness that owes much to the lieder of Brahms, Schumann, and Wolf, every one of these songs demonstrates Parry’s fundamental concern for sincerity and proper declamation of the words. Hubert Parry is undergoing something of a revival, and these performances return his songs to the heart of his output, where the composer always felt they belonged.

For its second Delphian recording, the Marian Consort has leafed through the beautifully calligraphed pages of the partbooks compiled in Oxford between 1581 and 1588 by Elizabethan scholar Robert Dow in order to present a deeply satisfying sequence of some of their brightest jewels. Sumptuous motets, melancholy consort songs, and intricate, harmonically daring viol fantasies are seamlessly interwoven, all brought to life by seven voices and the robust plangency of the Rose Consort of Viols in the chapel of All Souls College, Oxford, where Dow himself was once a Fellow.

Britten’s meeting with Rostropovich in 1960 was a watershed, with the great Russian cellist becoming the primary collaborator of his later years and inspiring a whole series of masterworks. Among them are the three suites for solo cello, written as a conscious homage to those of Bach (there were originally to have been six). Intriguingly, the Britten scholar Paul Kildea sees the first as a coda to the War Requiem, the second as a snapshot of a lifetime of musical obsessions, and the third as reaching back to much earlier works and suffused with primordial Russian melody. Young virtuoso Philip Higham brings a youthful vigor and deep intelligence to these seminal masterpieces, resulting in performances of commanding authority and intensity.

“An exquisitely pure sound … [Owen Rees is] an impressive conductor.” — Early Music Review

Following five critically acclaimed and immensely popular recordings for AVIE, the Brook Street Band embarks on their most ambitious project to date: a recording with the estimable student Choir of the Queen’s College, Oxford, that pairs — for the first time ever — the two settings of the Dixit Dominus written by Alessandro Scarlatti and George Frideric Handel. On this recording the massed forces are joined by five of Britain’s brightest young singers: soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, mezzo-sopranos Esther Brazil and Sally Bruce-Payne, tenor Guy Cutting, and bass-baritone Matthew Brook.

“Hugely appealing … natural, spacious, rich, expressive performances.” — The Sunday Times (AVR 2167)

Following a critically acclaimed recording of music from the Eton Choirbook, More Divine Than Human, the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford returns with a second volume from the vast collection of 15th-century English sacred music, Choirs of Angels. The works range from John Browne’s richly scored eight-part “O Maria salvatoris mater,” the first piece in the Eton Choirbook, to William Cornysh’s exquisite miniature “Ave Maria mater Dei,” the choirbook’s shortest work. The compositional range in the Eton Choirbook demands extraordinary virtuosity from its performers, and Stephen Darlington and his choir of men and boys do this glorious music tremendous justice.

“I admire Roberto Moronn Pérez for his persistence and devotion, for developing his natural talents that they may grow and blossom, for his initiative in searching out viable ideas, and his patience for letting everything take a natural course.” — Thomas Frost, legendary multi-Grammy®-winning producer

With the phrase “Andrés Segovia Archive,” this album refers specifically to the collection of some three or four-dozen pieces recovered by Angelo Gilardino on May 7, 2001 at Segovia’s home in Spain. These pieces were dedicated to Segovia or commissioned by him, involving composers from eight countries. Edizione Musicale Bèrben subsequently published them as “The Segovia Archive Series.” Roberto Moronn Pérez researched these newly recovered works and found some pieces had never been recorded, and those that had were handicapped by poor visibility in the marketplace and limited distribution. This realization sparked the thought that here was an opportunity: a series of recordings, organized around the nationalities of the composers. The Spanish composers recorded here are the first in the series, to be followed by an album of the French composers.

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: May Night (an opera in three acts)

The idea of composing an opera based on Gogol’s story May Night was prompted by Rimsky-Korsakov’s wife, Nadezhda Purgold. The opera, an immediate predecessor of The Snow Maiden, was composed in 1878 and premiered on January 9, 1880 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, conducted by Eduard Nápravník. The content of Gogol’s story was transferred to the time of Whitsuntide, also called “Rusalka” or “Trinity Week.” The music is filled with tunes and intonations of Russian and Ukrainian folk song. This recording by the USSR TV & Radio Soloists, Choir, and Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, was awarded France’s Grand Prix Academie du Disque in 1976.

Furtwängler’s attractiveness, which can be felt even in the imperfect recordings made from the late ’30s to the early ’50s, lay in his magical ability to reveal the riches of classical masterpieces, in his exceptional sense of the musical form, and in his amazing skill marked with logic, ease, and clarity.

MUSSORGSKY: The Marriage • The Nursery

In 1868, inspired by Dargomyzhsky’s work on the opera The Stone Guest (based on Pushkin’s tragedy of the same name), Mussorgsky decided to compose his own opera called The Marriage. His task was the same as Dargomyzhsky’s: to write an opera based on the text of a literary work without editing it. Although the opera remained unfinished (it was later completed and orchestrated by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov), the single act of The Marriage was an important milestone in both Mussorgsky’s career, and in the history of music in general.

The cycle The Nursery became one of the masterpieces of Mussorgsky’s vocal and instrumental creative work. Composed to the composer’s own lyrics, the cycle is an extraordinary work which consists of seven numbers that are neither romances nor songs. In their essence, they are miniature scenes from childhood, where Mussorgsky creates the wonderful inner world of a child with amazing accuracy, depth, and love.

DARGOMYZHSKY: Rusalka (an opera in four acts)

Alexander Dargomyzhsky entered the history of Russian music as one of the founders of realistic art. His operas are distinguished by the finesse with which he personified human characters. His songs are evidence of his powers of observation and skillful psychological analysis. His aspirations found their mature expression in his chamber vocal works of the second half of the 1840s and early 1850s, especially in his opera Rusalka (1855), which takes the central place in the composer’s legacy. The first Russian opera based on a psychologically acute domestic drama, the plot was inspired by Pushkin’s poem of the same name. The first music sketches date from 1848. In the spring of 1855, the opera was completed and a year later, on May 4, 1865, it was premiered in St. Petersburg on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre.

DENISOV: Peinture for symphony orchestra • GUBAIDULINA: Offertorium, Concerto for violin and orchestra (one-part) • SCHNITTKE: The Census List • DENISOV/GUBAIDULINA/SCHNITTKE: March for Orchestra

This amazing release features a concert that has not only great artistic value, but also historic significance. It was the first and arguably the last time in the history of Soviet music when three large pieces by Schnittke, Denisov, and Gubaidulina — the informal leaders of Soviet avant-garde — were performed during one night!

The year was 1982, a turning point for Soviet culture and the year that the tide started to turn, leading to the final collapse of all censorial bans a few years later. Not long before that, all three composers had been officially ostracized from the tribune of the Union of Composers, and from the pages of the Pravda newspaper. One really had to have the genius and the reputation of the great Gennady Rozhdestvensky in order to put these names together in a concert program, and to conduct it with such splendor.

STRAVINSKY: The Firebird (1910)

In 1910 Paris, a ballet score called The Firebird proclaimed the birth of a new star: Igor Stravinsky. The script of the ballet, staged by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, emerged as a result of collective efforts by choreographer Michel Fokine; scene-painters Alexandre Benois, Léon Bakst, and Dmitri Stelletsky; and literary men Alexei Remizov and Pyotr Potyomkin. After Diaghilev’s passing, Manuel de Falla wrote to Stravinsky: “Of all his remarkable deeds, his ‘discovery’ of you takes the first place.”

Igor Zhukov: piano

SCRIABIN: Piano Sonatas 1–10

Russian pianist and conductor Igor Zhukov studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where two outstanding pianists influenced his talent: Heinrich Neuhaus and Emil Gilels. Alexander Scriabin’s musical legacy ranks high among Zhukov’s concert repertoire. From his first concert performances, the pianist turned to the works of this distinguished master, receiving great critical acclaim. The ten sonatas included on this Melodiya release are milestones of the composer’s piano works.

Sergei PROKOFIEV Complete Symphonies

Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra/Gennady Rohdestvensky: conductor

PROKOFIEV: Symphonies 1–7

A classic of Soviet symphonic music! Prokofiev’s works reflect the whole palette of a tempestuous 20th century history, from the greatest and most glorious accomplishments to the most bitter and tragic events. The composer’s symphonic heritage (seven symphonies composed from 1917 to 1952) is one of the brightest pages in the history of classical music, and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, brilliantly captured the works for this legendary project.

Alexander GLAZUNOV Complete Symphonies

USSR Ministry of Culture Symphony Orchestra/Gennady Rozhdestvensky: conductor

GLAZUNOV: Symphonies 1–8

It is difficult to overestimate the role that Alexander Glazunov, one of the most prominent Russian composers, played in the world music culture. Continuing the traditions of his great predecessors, Glazunov’s sublime and monumental symphonic canvases unfold slowly, amazing us with the clarity of their musical language. Gennady Rozhdestvensky (b. 1931) is one of the outstanding conductors of the 20th century, and also a pianist, composer, and researcher. In his enormous repertoire, he has performed and recorded all the symphonies by Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky.

PROKOFIEV: Winter Bonfire (French) • Winter Bonfire (English) • Orchestral Version

“Vincent Figuri, the musicologist and actor who narrates this recording, took great care in retracing the original lyrics so that the music can transpire through the words … The richness, lyricism, and poetry of Winter Bonfire are enhanced in this recording by the sensitive performance of the Saison Russe chorus and orchestra, conducted by Andrei Tchistiakov.” — Gramophone

The Winter Bonfire, composed by Prokofiev in 1950 for a symphonic orchestra plus a narrator and set to a text by Samuel Marchak, was especially created for Soviet state radio. The work was then banished, and has not been performed along with the original story for the past 62 years. Today this choral suite still remains a rarity, even without the narrative, both on a performance and a recording level. Musicologist and actor Vincent Figuri retraced the original lyrics, and reset them to the score. Having been slowly matured over the past 12 years, this new bilingual interpretation, with the original narrative restored, is truly a world premiere!

Dominique Corbiau: countertenorLa Cetra d’Orfeo Michel Keustermans: conductor

Selections from Gli equivoci nel Sembiante, Il Ciro, L’Amor volubile e tiranno, Griselda, Il David, La Giuditta, Il Primo Omicidio, La Vergine Addolorata, and Venere, Amore e Ragione

The new album by young Belgian countertenor Dominique Corbiau takes you on a journey into the Baroque music of Italy, exploring the vocal work of composer Alessandro Scarlatti (1660–1725). The album reveals three aspects of Scarlatti’s vocal art: opera that was performed in the theater, the oratorio that was presented in church, and the serenata, a kind of miniature opera delivered in palaces during lavish feasts. In total: four overtures and 20 infinitely contrasting yet refined arias made of simple, immediately appealing melodies. Superbly incarnated by the sensual and mellifluous voice of Dominique Corbiau and accompanied by the many talents of La Cetra d’Orfeo under the ever-inventive and colorful baton of Michel Keustermans, Profano e Sacro will be for many a double discovery: that of a young singer with a growing reputation, and an exciting introduction to a fascinating but seldom recorded repertoire.

DONIZETTI: Lucia di Lammermoor (complete opera)

“This 1959 studio recording of Lucia has held up well. Renata Scotto was just at the start of her international career, but she clearly was a complete artist already … She’s a terrific Lucia. Giuseppe di Stefano also is in good voice … his passion is welcome. Almost stealing the show is Ettore Bastianini … Singing with huge tone and an audible sneer, he’s the best Enrico on disc … Nino Sanzogno’s conducting

and La Scala’s playing is exciting and first rate. The sound … acceptable and very clear.” — Robert Levine, ClassicsToday

Lucia loves Edgardo, but her brother Enrico — who wants her to marry his friend Arturo instead — forges a letter to Lucia pretending that Edgardo is unfaithful. Depressed, Lucia agrees to the unwanted marriage, but when Edgardo denounces her she goes mad, slashes

her new husband to death on their wedding night, and soon dies. When Edgardo finds out he was duped, and that Lucia loved him after all, he takes his own life in despair.

Luciano Pavarotti: tenor

Featuring music from Giordano, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini

Many opera singers, regardless of their nationality, sing a variety of operas in many different languages, but Pavarotti was one whose heart, and art, remained firmly planted on his native soil. He did sing the occasional French opera (Manon and Les Huguenots), but almost always in Italian translation; the one Mozart opera he excelled in, Idomeneo, was written in Italian. Otherwise, he exclusively sang the folk and popular songs of Italy and the familiar operas of the great Italian composers, especially Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini.

Luciano Pavarotti: tenor

Featuring music from Pergolesi, Legrenzi, Rossini, Donizetti Gluck, Mozart, and Beethoven

There is disagreement as to the exact definition of the well-known term “bel canto” in opera, although the literal translation from Italian is simply “beautiful singing.” Some musicologists insist the term should apply only to the operas of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. Others argue, more convincingly, that the type of singing referred to is that which prevailed throughout the 18th century and up until Verdi, when a new style — based more on dramatic expression than vocal beauty — became dominant. This album surveys Luciano Pavarotti in this genre in which he excelled, and which may be said to have been his specialty.

“One of the finest choirs of our day.” — Gramophone

Sixteenth-century England was a place of much religious change. It was a dangerous and confusing time, and it is testament to their incredible skill and musical mastery that composers like Tallis and Byrd were able to produce such magnificent works in such troubled times. Their works left a lasting legacy, influencing some of our most celebrated 20th- and 21st-century composers and surviving over half a millennium to be performed as widely today as they have ever been. This disc features some of the best-loved classics of Tudor and Jacobean church music together with madrigals by Tallis, Byrd, and Gibbons. They are performed alongside pieces by Britten, Tippett, and MacMillan including the Five Spirituals from “A Child of Our Time” and the Choral Dances from “Gloriana.”

This interesting new release comes to us from Victorian Opera Northwest, whose UK director Raymond Walker — together with conductor Richard Bonynge — have carried out extensive research into the development of the British Opera movement which began in the 1830s and stretched to the 1890s. Victorian Opera Northwest promotes the excellent forgotten music of 19th-century operas by talented British and Irish composers. Their music used to be extremely popular in its time, yet it has been unjustly neglected since. With the aid of well-known musicians, Victorian Opera researches contemporary sources, typesets fresh orchestral parts taken from original manuscripts, and prints scores containing rare repertoire. Their latest efforts have resulted in a superbly enjoyable disc of 19th-century opera overtures, consisting mostly of premiere recordings.

Catherine Zimmer: harpsichord

A collection of mid-18th-century opera arias transcribed for harpsichord

“The performer’s dedication and her familiarity with this eloquent and spectacular style are remarkable … She takes great care in the choice of her registrations and positions herself in a certain tradition of French harpsichord playing, while adding her own sense of phrasing, and a distinctive feel for orchestral sound.” — Diapason

Musical life in Paris in the 1760s was remarkably busy. The Concert Spirituel attracted talented musicians, many new operas were composed, and the public thronged the concert halls to hear the latest compositions. Against this backdrop, Claude Balbastre published a “Collection of airs from various operas transcribed for harpsichord,” from excerpts of Rameau’s Dardanus (1739) to Monsigny’s On ne s’avise jamais de tout. Besides Rameau, the most frequently quoted composer in the collection, one finds Mondonville, Ferrand, Rebel, and Monsigny, as well as original pieces for the harpsichord, such as Rameau’s “Les Petits Marteaux” and a version of Scarlatti’s sonata K.95 revisited by the French composer. Catherine Zimmer explores two decades of French opera, and takes her cue from the orchestration of the original pieces in her choices of interpretation.

“The work of an artist capable of matching the rich elements of classical composition with the flowing rhythms of jazz … the product of a splendid musical mind.” — Los Angeles Times

Mark Isaacs premiered Children’s Songs in 2012 at the Adelaide Festival in South Australia. In this pensive suite of short piano works, one of Australia’s most accomplished composers and pianists plunges us into a part of ourselves that we may have thought we’d lost forever. World-renowned pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy remarked, “This wonderful cycle is highly inventive and inspiring, accessible to children and adults alike. Very enjoyable and touching!” To compose the suite Isaacs drew upon various influences, most notably “Kinderszenen,” Schumann’s set of solo piano pieces from 1838. The work also nods to Mozart, Bartók, Debussy, Bach, Percy Grainger, and Alban Berg.

Jean-Marie Leclair was born in Lyon in 1697. By his nineteenth birthday, he had perfected the arts of violin playing, dance, and lace-making. He was to become the most eminent violinist of his time, traveling throughout Europe. Early in his career he was appreciated not only for his virtuosity, but also for the originality of his compositions. One of his greatest achievements was to combine the two rival national schools of French taste and Italian style.

Edward Young’s epic poem “Night Thoughts” (1742) has gone down in history as representative of the sentimental style known in Germany as “Empfindsamkeit.” Intimacy and immediacy were characteristics of a style that had turned its back on Baroque rhetoric; it was now no longer a question of persuasion but of allowing the flow of sentiments to be freely expressed. C.P.E. Bach translated this sensibility into music better than any other composer of his time.

A key figure of Radio France’s last Présences Festival, Oscar Strasnoy, aged 40, stands out for his sense of pastiche and the ease of writing that scoffs at the boundaries between popular and “art” music. He has succeeded in cutting a singular path and establishing himself as one of the most original composers of his generation, both serious and humorous.

BLOCH: Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano • Poème mystique • Nigun, from Baal Shem (Three Pictures of Chassidic Life) • Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano • PÄRT: Fratres (version for violin and piano, 1980)

For her first recording, charismatic young violinist Elsa Grether and Romanian pianist Ferenc Vizi perform two sonatas for violin and piano by Ernest Bloch, which form a diptych. The composer described the first as “the world as it is: the frantic struggle of blind and primordial forces,” and the second as “the world as it should be, the world of which we dream; a world full of idealism, faith, fervor, and hope, where Jewish themes go side by side with the Credo and the Gloria of the Gregorian Chant.” The sonatas are framed by Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, a ritual between silence and sound, and Bloch’s Nigun, part of his famous cycle Baal Shem, probably one his most popular pieces. The title of the album, Poème Mystique, aptly evokes a vibrant program composed of works of great emotional power and linked by a profound sentiment of mysticism, whether they draw their inspiration from Gregorian chant or from Judaism.

Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien François Lazarevitch: conductor

A collection of courtly and dance songs of the later medieval period

Focusing on the theme of Robin and Marion immortalized by Adam de la Halle at the end of the 13th century, François Lazarevitch has brought together a team of specialists in the courtly and dance repertories of the later medieval period. Les Musiciens de Saint-Julien explore a poetic, colorful world of peasants and knights rich in contrasts, where subtle love songs engage in dialogue with boisterous dance tunes. Lazarevitch pursues a process of exploration now saluted throughout the worlds of classical and traditional music: his most recent release, Et la fleur vole, was awarded a Diapason d’Or and a “Choc” de Classica.

A collection of contrasting works for the early violin

Smaller stringed instruments began to be developed during the first half of the 16th century, maturing little by little into the vyollon, a term first employed at the court of Savoy in 1523. It was at this time that violins first began to appear in paintings, one of which is the fresco by Gaudenzio Ferrari that appears on the cover of this CD. The works recorded here put this period into a clear musical context and provide a fine array of contrasting works for these first violins; there are not only works from the Franco-Flemish school that had been flourishing in Italy since the middle of the 15th century, but also works from the pure Italian style that was in the process of being reborn. Motets, ricercars, counterpoints, madrigals, and dances are all discovered anew and extend our knowledge of period instruments even further. This, after all, is one of Ricercar’s principal aims. The recording introduces the Miroir de Musique, an ensemble of young players, the majority of whom studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. An exciting program of works performed by musicians who are able to ally musicology with emotion!

WOLF-FERRARI: Serenade for Strings in E flat major • Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major, Op. 26

Among Wolf-Ferrari’s compositions, the positive mood of the Serenade for Strings is unique, or almost unique. It can be associated, even with its diversities, to 15-year-old Mendelssohn composing his string Octet. The Serenade in E flat was performed on occasion of the end-of-year concert of the Musical Academy of Leipzig, and became immediately popular. It was conducted by Ludwig Abel, who later proposed it to Steingräber, a publisher from Leipzig that published it and paid his author 150 marks.

Alessandro SCARLATTIComplete Keyboard Works Vol. IV

Francesco Tasini: harpsichord

SCARLATTI: Moderato in C minor • Toccata for harpsichord in C major • Toccata IV in E minor • Vivace in A minor • Toccata Primo Tono • Allegro in G minor • Toccata III in A major • Toccata in C major • Toccata in A minor • Toccata in D minor • Toccata for harpsichord in F major • Toccata in G major

This is the fourth Tactus CD containing compositions by Alessandro Scarlatti that were chiefly meant for the harpsichord and performed on it; it is a follow-up to their project that envisages the recording of the complete works of this great composer for keyboard instruments. The project stemmed from the program for the study and publication of the vast corpus of manuscript sources (no less than 25) of Scarlatti’s pieces for keyboard instruments that the label started more than 10 years ago: the publication of his complete works for keyboard by the publisher Ut Orpheus Edizioni of Bologna (edited by Andrea Macinanti and Francesco Tasini) began in 2000 and was completed in 2012 with the printing of the sixth and last volume.

Rebecca de Pont Davies: mezzo-soprano/Andrew Marriner: clarinet/Maggini String Quartet/John Tattersdill: double bass

CORP: String Quartet No. 3 • The Yellow Wallpaper • Clarinet Quintet (‘Crawhall’)

Stone Records is delighted to announce its fourth CD of music by Ronald Corp OBE, made up of three chamber works, all world premiere recordings. Corp’s Third String Quartet is, unlike his earlier two quartets, simply beautiful music for its own sake. By complete contrast, the central piece is a setting of an adaptation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper. A thrilling psychological mini-drama, this powerful piece grips the listener as the angst of the protagonist is played out. The final piece is a clarinet quintet written in honor of 19th-century polymath Joseph Crawhall. The booklet contains full notes by the composer, as well as illustrating some wood engravings by Joseph Crawhall.

Stone Records is delighted to announce the Lendvai String Trio’s second release, a double disc that comprises the complete string trios of Beethoven. The ensemble has been playing together for nine years, and has performed the Beethoven trios from their very first recital in 2004. Since then they have won numerous awards and received great critical acclaim for their first disc of works by Martinu, Francaix, and Enescu. This new Beethoven recording demonstrates the complete understanding that these incredible musicians have, both for the repertoire and for each other’s playing. The recording contains full notes on all the pieces performed.

His special interest in contemporary music led him to develop special workshops for flute music, which have been presented in the U.S., Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. The World of the Oboe is an introduction to the music, players, reeds, and instruments.

Various ArtistsThe French Accent

Francis Poulenc, Pierre Pierlot, Louis Bas, Louis Bleuzet, Roland Lamorlette, Myrtile Morel: oboes

POULENC: Trio • THUILLE: Gavotte from the Sextet • AURIC: Trio • ROUSSEL: Divertissement, Op. 6 • MARGUERITE ROESGEN-CHAMPION: Pastorale • HOTTETERRE: Suite/Sonata in D • FERROUD: Trio • STRAVINSKY: Pastorale • JOLIVET: Sérénade pour quintette à vent avec hautbois principal • MASSENET: “La Troyenne regrettant sa patrie” from Les Erinnyes

What is “French” about French composers and players? In these recordings we can hear virtuosity, tangy tone colors, and a sheer joie de vivre that can be missing from some more careful modern performances. Tempos are breakneck, especially from pianist/composer Francis Poulenc and in the Trio by Georges Auric, but there is a Debussy-like sensuousness in Albert Roussel’s Divertissement. The oboist in that piece is Pierre Pierlot, who can also be heard in the solo oboe part of André Jolivet’s Sérénade, and in a Sonata by Jacques Hotteterre.

W.A. MOZARTPiano Quartet

Boyan Vodenitcharov: piano/Ryo Terakado: violin/François Fernandez: viola/Rainer Zipperling: cello

MOZART: Piano Quartet in G, K. 478 • Piano Quartet in E flat, K. 493

This CD is the group’s attempt to recreate the atmosphere of “late Mozart,” performed on original instruments from the 18th century. Each CD production is both a deep personal experience, and a special memory of time spent creating something unique.

Éric Aubier: trumpet/Fabrice Millischer: trombone/Republican Guard Wind Ensemble/François Boulanger & Sébastien Billard: conductors

TOMASI: Concerto for trumpet (premiere) • Concerto for trombone (premiere) • Les Noces de cendres • Suite for three trumpets

The tracks on this CD are the perfect reflection of Henri Tomasi’s aesthetic development and progression. The composer affirms that the true force of man lies in his love for humanity, despite its failings. The disc includes world premieres of the orchestrated arrangements for large wind ensembles of these concertos.

JENKINS: Aires for a treble, lyra, bass and harpsichord

John Jenkins died at the age of 86. During his long career, he was appreciated both for his musical and human qualities. This recording explores two particular aspects of his abundant and varied compositions: the lyra-viol consorts and the virtuoso fancy-suites for violin, bass viol, and organ.
