It seemed really important to express that priority in our mission statement. We just completed the Thanksgiving Food Basket distribution. Over 120 families were served by this outreach ministry. The Food Pantry regularly serves 90 families each time they open their doors, which is twice a month. That is about how many pledging units we have in this parish. So, 90 families are helping 90 families twice monthly with needed food support. It was recently calculated that 25 percent of all active members take part in helping the feeding ministry. Most of the financial support for the Food Pantry is not in our parish budget. Your donations to the holiday feeding programs, and other special contributions throughout the year make this ministry possible. These numbers are amazing to me, and they demonstrate not only this parish’s commitment to outreach, but how much God has blessed the efforts. The Thrift Shop is our other major outreach program. Obviously, it is a money making operation that helps to support all of our ministries, but it has become an amazing outreach in its own right. There is a powerful sense of community among those who volunteer in the Thrift Shop. This includes many who are not members of the parish, people who have found a home and a ministry just in the Thrift Shop. That sense of community extends to all the customers as well. Everyone is welcomed warmly. People always find a sympathetic ear or help with necessities they cannot afford. If a regular customer doesn’t show up, they often receive a call to make sure they are alright. All of this is in addition to the needed items available for purchase at very reasonable prices, the most obvious way in which the shop is an outreach ministry. Reaching Out in Love You may have noticed that this article is on a newly designed front page for our

newsletter. But look closely. You may have not noticed that in addition to a new look, the

mission statement, which has always been part of the newsletter’s front page, has changed. It

wasn’t a drastic change. It is mostly the same mission statement, but we have added a new final

phrase: “and to share that grace through outreach.”

Our vestry recently looked at the mission statement. They asked themselves, “Does this

mission statement still express what we see as the mission to which God has called us?” There

was full agreement that as it was, the mission statement truly expressed the basic mission of

Christ Church. However, we realized that there was something missing. Christ Church has

always been dedicated to outreach. We realized, though, that in recent years, our mission has

been dominated by outreach. It seemed really important to express that priority in our mission

statement.

We just completed the Thanksgiving Food Basket distribution. Over 120 families were

served by this outreach ministry. The Food Pantry regularly serves 90 families each time they

open their doors, which is twice a month. That is about how many pledging units we have in this

parish. So, 90 families are helping 90 families twice monthly with needed food support. It was

recently calculated that 25 percent of all active members take part in helping the feeding

ministry. Most of the financial support for the Food Pantry is not in our parish budget. Your

donations to the holiday feeding programs, and other special contributions throughout the year

make this ministry possible. These numbers are amazing to me, and they demonstrate not only

this parish’s commitment to outreach, but how much God has blessed the efforts.

The Thrift Shop is our other major outreach program. Obviously, it is a money making

operation that helps to support all of our ministries, but it has become an amazing outreach in its

own right. There is a powerful sense of community among those who volunteer in the Thrift

Shop. This includes many who are not members of the parish, people who have found a home

and a ministry just in the Thrift Shop. That sense of community extends to all the customers as

well. Everyone is welcomed warmly. People always find a sympathetic ear or help with

necessities they cannot afford. If a regular customer doesn’t show up, they often receive a call to

make sure they are alright. All of this is in addition to the needed items available for purchase at

very reasonable prices, the most obvious way in which the shop is an outreach ministry.

Given the amount of monetary and human resources that go into outreach—and I have

only mentioned to two biggest programs—it seemed natural for us add the final phrase to our

mission statement. Indeed we wish to share God’s grace with the world through outreach in

love.

THE MISSION OF CHRIST CHURCH is to bring all persons to the saving

knowledge of Jesus Christ through Word, Sacraments, and instruction, as taught through the Episcopal tradition, that all

may know the joy and grace of faith, and to share that grace through outreach.

From Lydia Pozzato: Many thanks to everyone who helped to make this year's Harvest Festival such a great

success! From the “small, but mighty” crew of talented decorators and “setter-uppers”; to the entrants of the

various contests; to those involved in the fun, kids' games; and finally, to our friends in the parish who came

out to share the evening with us, and who brought delicious dishes for the enjoyment of all (and who helped

clean up, too!) We couldn’t have done it without you ~ let’s all do it again next year!

Special thanks, to Debbie Garland and Elaine Wyant, who led our capable team of decorators in the Great

Hall. Their team included (in no particular order) Janice Kenkel, Missy Pixton, Missie Jarman, Ellen

Johnson, Meredith Lake, Betsy Warne, Shirley Pozzato, Ruth Brancolini, and honorary ECW member, Bill

Butler.

Our talented floral designers, Linda Rooney and Anne Williams, led the decorating efforts in the church,

with Ruth Brancolini, and Shirley Pozzato lending a hand.

Many thanks also, to Jenny LeBlanc, who coordinated the kid’s games; and to our parish teens, who led them

so well.

Congratulations, to our contest winners! The Grand Prize winner of the best apple pie contest was Anne

Williams, although it was nearly a tie, with Cameron Eagle who took first place. The Grand Prize for best

pumpkin pie went to Elaine Wyant, with Mary Kovach in first place, Donna Nuzum in second and Debbie

Garland in third. In the “Creative Cupcakes” category, we had Debbie Garland as the Grand Prize winner,

followed by Shirley Pozzato in first, Donna Nuzum in second, and Megan & Jenny LeBlanc in third.

Thank you, very much, to all who entered, and provided us with such delectable desserts!

Many thanks also, to the Vestry and Fr. Jeff, for serving as the judges in those very close competitions.

This year's judging was tougher than ever!

Thank you, to all the entrants in the pumpkin carving contest! Our talented carvers/decorators included

Megan Le Blanc, Aaron, Drew, and Jack De Filippo, Kalissa and Kyla Houck, and Donna Nuzum.

All were winners in their own categories. Congratulations!

Finally, I would like to again thank the ECW for their generosity in providing matching funds, dollar for

dollar, in the chrysanthemum raffle. Thanks to them, the total amount raised to buy Thanksgiving turkeys

for our neighbors-in-need was $234 dollars!

Many thanks to all who came out to join us for the lovely, contemplative, candle-lit service that

is the Celtic Evensong. We had an excellent turnout, which we greatly appreciated!

Special thanks to Kris Clifford, who performed as beautifully as always, despite having had

surgery a mere five days earlier! (What a trouper!) Many thanks also, to Hannah and Jeff

Massey, and to Roy Smith, who was kind enough to jump in at the last moment, after we lost our

regular guitarist to another engagement. Fortunately for us all, Roy is a real pro, who was able to

make it sound as if he had been playing with us for years!

Many thanks also, to Fr. Jeff, for leading such a lovely, and prayerful service.

And, I don't want to forget those kind souls who helped me out, as I was running out of time to

finish setting up, and lighting the candles, et al. In particular, I'd like to thank Shirley Pozzato,

Bill Butler, Steve Clifford, and Bill Palmer. I couldn't have done it without you!

Finally, I'd like to point out that the beautiful, stained-glass “Trinity Knot” on display on the altar

was made by our very own, multi-talented artist, Linda Rooney. Linda, it is truly magnificent!

And, what a wonderful gift of love it was, to Christ Church!

If you didn't get to experience the Celtic Evensong this time around, please mark your calendars

for March 15th, in which we will be playing an all-Irish program, in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

Please join us in marking the day, by wearing something green, and/or with Celtic designs, if you

can. We hope to see you there!

On the First Sunday after Christmas Day, we

will once again celebrate a Service of Lessons

and Carols at the 10:30 service. This beautiful service is in the tradition of the service that is

done at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge every year on Christmas Eve. This program is

regularly broadcast on National Public Radio. Our version includes seven lessons starting in the

Old Testament with the prophetic words about our Savior’s coming and going through the

Gospel stories about his birth in Bethlehem. Each lesson is followed by an appropriate

Christmas carol. Our service is intended for congregational singing of all the carols. It is not a

performance by the choir. Come and enjoy singing the favorite songs of the season!

THANKSGIVING BASKET DISTRIBUTION

The Outreach Commission continued its special holiday tradition of providing Thanksgiving

and Christmas baskets for our Food Pantry families. Janice and Jim Kenkel again this year

led the distribution of Thanksgiving baskets and are especially appreciative of the tireless

efforts of so many who joined in the packing and distribution of the baskets for 128 families.

None of this would have been possible without the financial support of our parishioners, many

of whom took the opportunity to give by way of the special holiday envelopes. The ECW

held a raffle at our Harvest Festival dinner and separately gave matching funds for these

baskets.

CHRISTMAS BASKET DISTRIBUTION,

SATURDAY, DEC 20th

As we enter the Advent season, our attention now turns to the Christmas Basket program

being coordinated by Penny Knepp, Kristi Gross and Bill Butler. Holiday envelopes are again

placed in the pews as a reminder that additional funds and helping hands are needed to

provide baskets for 140 families. Sign up sheets are in the Communications Center.

Altar Guild

Altar Guild is looking for new members!!! Being a member of this ministry is very rewarding

and so easy!! It involves just an hour or so of your time once a month and you will be a part of a

very special group. Please give it serious thought and contact Linda Wieland or any guild

member if you are interested.

Episcopal Church Women

On December 5, we will meet for lunch at Brock’s, then deliver our ornaments made at the

November 18 meeting to Greenfield Senior Living and sing carols to the residents. Sarah Estes,

our former church treasurer, now makes her home there.

April is our annual Spring Plant and Bake sale (our only fund raiser for the year) and we end in

May with a tour of an area Episcopal Church. Please plan on joining us for one or all of these

events and for our regular monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of the month in the Great Hall

at 11:30 AM. To join us or for more information, contact Debbie Garland at (540) 898-8732.

Parish Care Commission ~ Respite Care

Are you responsible for the care of another adult? Do you need just a couple of hours to get out

and take care of some errands, or just to have a break? The Parish Care Commission is now

offering respite care. We can have a volunteer sit with someone you love for up to 2 hours while

you go out to do whatever you need to do. There is no personal care that we can provide, just

companionship and help with simple tasks like getting something to eat or drink. Volunteers will

receive training for the prevention of sexual misconduct, per diocesan standards. Contact Elaine

Wyant at 540-786-3267 for help, or if you yourself would like to be a volunteer.

Greening of the Church

The greening of the church will be on December 22 after the 10:30 service. This is a lovely

tradition and volunteers are needed. Come help prepare the church for the Christmas celebra-

tion. Mark your calendars! More information will be provided soon.

Blue Christmas

A Service of Comfort and Joy

Last year we started a new tradition. The Blue Christmas service is intended to be an alternative

way to celebrate Christmas for anyone who feels they need it. Or it could be something to do in

addition to attending one of the regular Christmas Eve services. It is called “blue” as in sad. We

will celebrate the birth of Jesus with the appropriate sense of joy and thankfulness. However

there is an acknowledgment that not everyone is feeling happy at this time of year. So, if you are

mourning the loss of someone you love, are dealing with any other kind of loss or sadness, or

just get a little depressed around the holidays, this is the service for you. During the service we

will invite participants to remember loved ones or otherwise offer their grief to God with prayers

for healing. This service meant a lot to those who participated last year. If it is appropriate for

you, I hope you will give it a try on Sunday, December 21, at 7 PM in the Church.

Epiphany Bonfire, January 9

The Epiphany bonfire will begin at 6 PM on Friday, January 9. You are invited to bring

Christmas trees, wreaths, and greens to burn. Refreshments will be available: mulled cider and

hot chocolate. We will sing songs around the fire, and just have a good old-fashioned fun

evening. The Feast of Epiphany, celebrated on January 6 each year, is kind of the culmination of

the Christmas season. It is a time of enlightenment, and happens when the days are just

beginning to get a little longer. The bonfire symbolizes the revelation of Jesus as the Son of God

which enlightens our hearts and lifts our spirits during the darkest part of the year. Come join us

for this joyous event!

The Youth Group will have our Christmas Party on Saturday, December 20 following

the Children’s Christmas Party and Pageant Practice. After the younger children are picked

up we will “put our party hats on”, have some yummy food, and play some fun games. All

members please bring a snack to share and a wrapped gift (homemade or $10 limit) for one of

our games.

Pick up time is 4 PM.

Annual Meeting, February 1, 2015

The vestry has set the date for our annual parish meeting. It will be following the 10:30 service

on Sunday, February 1 next year. Now, before you panic when you realize that this is Super

Bowl Sunday, let me reassure you that you will be home in time for the game, and probably most

of the pre-game show as well. We are usually done with the meeting and lunch by 2:00. At the

annual meeting we will present the budget for 2015, and elect three new people to serve three-

year terms on the vestry. And, as is our custom, we will have a potluck luncheon following the

meeting. Child care will be provided.

Vestry Nominations Sought

Is God calling you to serve on the vestry? Our governing board meets once a month, with an

annual day-long retreat for planning and occasional extra meetings when needed. In order to run

you must be an adult (16 years or older), confirmed, and active in working, praying, and giving

for the spread of the kingdom of God. If you have questions you can speak to one of the current

members. Candidate forms are available at the Communications Center. These include a

detailed description of expectations for vestry members.

Bishop Visit, March 29, 2015

The Rt. Rev. Edwin F. “Ted” Gulick, Jr., Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia, will make

our annual Episcopal visitation the morning of March 29 at the 10:30 service. That happens to

be Palm Sunday! It is always a treat to have a bishop visit on a high, holy day. Bishop Ted will

celebrate confirmations, and preach and celebrate the Eucharist. We will have a reception

following the service to welcome the bishop and to honor the confirmands.

Christ Church Thrift Shop

Open 10am to 4pm

Thrift Sales are up and it has been a busy time for us. People have already started to shop for the

holidays. We continue to need additional volunteers and more donations, particularly gently used

furniture which is one of our best sellers. Buy new and give us your “old” furniture. Please

continue to clean out those closets, attics, basements and garages. Plastic bags are needed to bag

customer’s merchandise. Sales were up one-third because of the acceptance of credit cards. Note:

We can no longer accept computers or TVs (except for flat screens). For assistance, contact

Cheryl at (540) 972-1891 or Kelli or Mary at (540) 582-5508 (Tues., Thurs., Fri., Sat.).

Fellowship Commission

We want and need you to share yourself and your time hosting Fellowship on Sundays.

Fellowship hour is a very important ministry as it gives us time to socialize once a week as a

church family. Talk to Bill Butler about hosting and then sign up at the Communication Center.

Even once a month will help.

Weather Alert

When there is snow on Sunday, we expect everyone to use his or her best judgment about

attempting to attend worship services. When in doubt as to whether services have been

cancelled, you may check out the parish web page or www.Fredericksburg.com. Also listen to

the following FM radio stations: 93.3 WFLS, 95.9 WGRQ, 96.9 WWUZ, 99.3 WYSK, 104.5

WGRX.

Save the Date ~ May 1-3, 2015 at Shrine Mont, Our Annual Parish Retreat Weekend!

“Shrine Mont is a place where people are more important than things, where prayer and reflection, rest and

recreation are more important than appointments and tasks. It’s a place where people give thanks to God for

his creation—from the beauty of the streams, flowers and wildlife which are at home here, to the people who

Prayer List Will Re-start

On the first of the year the prayer list published in our Sunday Announcements will be re-started. That means

that if you wish to keep a name on the list, you must let us know. As always, you may add a name to the list

at any time by contacting the parish office or utilizing one of the pew cards. We do ask that when the need

for prayer has subsided, you notify the office so we can remove names when appropriate to do so.
