THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Good News: November 5, 2017

Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

God sets high standards for the religious leaders of Israel in the Old Testament. The prophet Malachi (whose name means “messenger”) delivers a threating command to the priests in our first reading. Not only had they turned aside from the Law of Moses, but they were leading the people astray. Jesus makes a similar critique, speaking to his disciples and the crowd, telling them to listen to the scribes and Pharisees, but not to imitate them. Both groups talked a good game but did not follow through in practice. They wanted applause and special recognition, but were not willing to serve the people with humility. Even worse, their teaching laid burdens on them. Notice the difference between these two groups and Saint Paul’s tender attitude and affectionate behavior described in his first Letter to the Thessalonians. No wonder this community received his preaching not simply as “a human word but, as it truly is, the word of God, which is now at work in you who

believe”” (2:13). Good leaders are humble servants.

What has been your experience of church leaders? Do you pray for your bishops, priests, deacons, and teachers of religion?

REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

LOOKING FORWARD November 12, 2017

Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

The virtue of wisdom is highly regarded in the Bible. Wisdom is imaged as a woman in today’s first reading, “resplendent and unfading” in the beauty and gifts she brings to those who seek her (6:12). Indeed, she seeks those worthy of her and graciously appears to them. Wisdom prepares us to be watchful and ready for the One who comes at an unexpected hour. Both Saint Paul in his first Letter to the Thessalonians and Jesus’ parable of the ten virgins call us to trust in the promises of God’s word that Christ will return. Saint Paul supports the Thessalonians who are grieving over the loss of their loved ones, reminding them that they are called to live in hope because Jesus will bring those who have died to life again with him. In the meantime, let us keep a supply of the oil of good works in readiness to greet the Beloved when he comes to take us into the kingdom. To be wise is to be ready for a future life with the Lord.

What are you pursuing in your life? Is it the wisdom of God?

AND

NOVEMBER 22ND

from 10-11 am

The monthly Recovery Gathering will be in the St. Joseph/

St. Raphael Parish offices at 225 E High St. on the 2nd

and 4th Wednesday each month. This month that will be

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11TH

& 25TH from 10-11 am. The

mission of the Recover

Gatherings are encourage,

support and walk with those

seeking to recover from addiction

and mental illness and those who

love them. There are many

programs and people who can help with recovery but it is

often hard to take the 1st step to identify and accept the

problem. It is also hard to accept that recovery may be a

difficult and ongoing process that does not end. That is

why we need to support and encourage each other. The

meeting is open to all. For more information contact Norm

Thanks go to all who decorated their trunks and brought games, candy and treats to share. Thanks goes to the Lewis family for bringing the much needed hot cocoa. Congratulations go to Bridget LaVelle for having the best decorated trunk. A special thanks goes to our chairperson Chelsie Davis, Holly Davis and our 6

making it a wonderful event. It was great to close with the Litany of the Saints and prayers for all of our beloved who have gone before us.

THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THERE IS A BASKET IN THE BACK OF BOTH CHURCHES TO RECEIVE YOUR LETTERS. ALL LETTERS WILL BE MAILED IN BULK TO OUR REPRESENTATIVES. If you didn ’t pick up a letter-writing packet there are packets on the tables in the back of both churches.

Myanmar refugees in Bangladesh Thousands of Rohingya are fleeing to Bangladesh to escape a recent military crackdown in Myanmar that includes burning villages. The Rohingya are members of a persecuted Muslim minority in majority-Buddhist Myanmar. Not recognized as Myanmar citizens, they are stateless. The desperate refugees arrive at a rate of 20,000 a day on foot and in boats, pushed out by the surge in violence. “For 4 days, I hid myself in the forest. Then, we tried to walk to the border. I was so scared,” says Rajida Begum, a 30-year-old mother who fled her village with neighbors when she was 9 months pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl under a piece of plastic sheeting in the middle of a rice paddy 5 days after arriving in Bangladesh. As she cradled her newborn baby, she looked relieved: “When I saw that she was healthy, I was so happy. I gave thanks to God.” The humanitarian crisis is overwhelming existing refugee camps, forcing many of the families to live in makeshift shelters—tents of bamboo and plastic constructed along roadways or on hillsides. Others are living with the Rohingya families who were already in Bangladesh. The aid that CRS and Caritas Bangladesh are providing includes a 2-week supply of food—rice, lentils, sugar, salt and vegetable oil—as well as cooking equipment and other household items for 5,300 displaced families, reaching a total of more than 26,000 people. Caritas is coordinating with the local government as well as U.N. agencies and other humanitarian groups to distribute these relief items. But the emergency need is far greater, including access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation and health care, and security in the overcrowded and disorganized refugee camps. Abdul Rahman, 21, who lost his wife in the violence, now is the sole caregiver for his 4-month-old daughter. “The baby won’t stop crying. I’m asking lactating mothers to help with feeding her, but I’m so worried. I don’t know if she will survive. We have no food. We have nothing at all,” he says. The foreign minister of Bangladesh has appealed to the United Nations and the international humanitarian community to support the government in assisting the new arrivals. After visiting the affected areas on Sept. 12, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says that her country would offer temporary shelter and aid to the people in need, including setting aside 2,000 acres for a new refugee camp. Many international organizations are now seeking the required approval from the government of Bangladesh to begin responding to the crisis.
