Jewish Music Month EncoresJewish Music Month at the JCC, betweenPurim and Pesach, returned to the JCC.During March, three special events werescheduled: the Viva Voce Ensemble in aprogram of music by Jewish composersand Jewish music, a recital by HenryCohen, clarinetist and klezmer specialist, and a lecture-demonstration by PeterSokolow. This last event, on March 28, was extraor-dinary. About eighty attendees weretreated to a truly authentic klezmer expe-rience. The audience was charmed by Mr.Sokolow. He demonstrated and per-formed on piano, clarinet, and saxophone and played excerpts fromhis prized collection of archival klezmer CDs. His historical and musicalexplanations and demonstrations were enlightening. His side remarks, sometimes in Yiddish, which he translated, punctuated his informativeand entertaining talk. A question and answer period followed. Later, one could purchase his CD, “Peter Sokolow, A Living Tradition,” onwhich he is heard playing all the instrumental parts: clarinet, bass, altosax, tenor sax, piano, synthesized accordion, bass, guitar, and vibes, thanks to the engineering skills of Ken Maltz. Special thanks to Neil Giniger, an associate of the Music Institute whohelped to arrange Mr. Sokolow’s appearance, and, of course, thanksto Music Institute Director Elzbieta (Ela) Seeley for producing anotherfine JCC program. -Bertha R. Mandel, Director Emerita

Jazzin’ at the J: A Night to RememberThe Evening of Jazz in a packed Stolzenberg Social Hall was much more than what the pro-gram listed; it went beyond hearing the stellar Helen Sung and her Quartet, and the partici-pation of the Staten Island Tech Jazz Band. It was the culmination of concentratedcollaboration of staff and volunteers of the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute. This was anight to remember. Kudos to Elzbieta (Ela) Seeley, Music Institute Director, for pulling it alltogether.Led by the indefatigable Music Institute Committee Co-Chairs Terry Baver and Daniel Kuhn, the volunteers planned a program that held an audience of almost 200 in rapt and rhythmicattention. Among the contributions to the JCC solicited by the committee was a sizable dona-tion from the star singer Ingrid Michaelson, who had studied at the JCC Music Institute. Com-mittee member Amanda Schroeder, a student at Staten Island Technical High School, linkedthe planning committee with Robert Rams, the S.I Tech faculty director of the jazz band. Theband included musicians who had studied at the JCC music school. Thank you, Amanda! And

congratulations to the members of theMusic Institute Committee who made thismemorable event possible: Terry Baver, Daniel Kuhn, Daisy Aberlin, Donna Fisher, RichardKuhn, David Sappin, Amanda Schroeder, Daniela Schroeder, Michael Schroeder, KarenSoren, Tamra Walker. It is not too late to join the “ensemble” because the committee continues to plan for the future. For more information, please call Elzbieta Seeley at 718.475.5263.-Bertha R. Stacie Kaplan Magnus reached a point inher life when she realized she lookedforward to coming home & sitting infront of her TV and snacking. It becamea pattern. As this pattern set in, shediscovered that her energy was dimin-ished throughout the day as the poundsadded up. After she and her husband dis-cussed their lifestyle they decided thatshe (and he) could do better. A long time member of the J (and now aBoard member) she never used the won-derful Fitness Center we have availableat the Bernikow. She had all kinds ofexcuses including the embarrassmentshe thought she would feel if she went in and was working out withpeople in much better shape than she was. Boy, was she wrong! From the moment she walked down to the Fitness desk & she wasgreeted by the warm and friendly staff til she got on her 1st treadmill& realized the people all around her were nice and helpful (includingthe trainers on the floor). Her 1st time working out wasn’t long but theexperience made it easy to come back. Once she started a routine andbegan building up her endurance and stamina she was sharing her ex-citement with her husband. And as Valentine’s Day approached herhusband suggested that he buy her a personal training package in-stead of the usual chocolate, etc. Based on her observation and per-sonal experience she ended up selecting Chris Lupardo. He sat down with her and they discussed what her goals were and de-signed both a fitness routine and a nutrition plan that included no junk

food and a reduction of her carb in-take. (along with more fresh pro-duce). She started taking group exclasses like spin and Body Pump andswitched to the arc trainer for hercardio. She also swam from time totime. Since she started her exercise pro-gram she has lost 60 lbs and count-ing! Her children have talked abouthow much more fun she is and howmuch more energy she has. Staciehas said “this place has saved mylife!” She has written a poem to ex-press just how she how she has feltthroughout her ongoing experience.Yasher Koach Stacie!
