THANK YOU TO

OUR DONORSCARMEL GIVES is a movement to help local businesses and provide assistance to those in need during this

difficult time. By working with organizations, including the Carmel Residents Association and the

Carmel Chamber of Commerce, Carmel Gives encourages grassroots support to quickly and efficiently

get community projects up and running.

Tim Allen founded the Carmel Gives Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County to

support these projects. “We have donated and will match up to $50,000 in donations from our friends, colleagues, clients and community to raise funds for local projects. We have also pledged to give 5% of our real estate fees from all transactions for the balance of 2020 to support local causes, and would love to partner with other agents and businesses.”

• Our first project supports local seamstresses making washable cloth face masks using materials

donated by area residents. In the first week alone, over 1,000 beautiful free masks were distributed

through local restaurants, retailers and directly to the Carmel Foundation and senior housing in

the area. 1,000 face masks were also acquired from two local high school students and distributed to

families of farm workers in Salinas Valley.

• Our next project “Feed a Student, Help a Restaurant” is partnering local restaurants with the Carmel

Unified School District to help them handle the increased demand for meals. Over 1,500 nutritional

meals are being delivered every week.

It is our goal to make an immediate impact and prepare for future needs with a fund that can be quickly applied

in creative ways. Please help us make a difference by donating to the Carmel Gives Fund of the Community

Foundation for Monterey County at CarmelGives.org.

WORDS, WORDS and more words. They are what keep me glued to my tele-vision set to follow the latest pronounce-ments from all the pandemic professionals pontificating profusely on how I should be living my life as a happy captive glued to my television set. The bad news is that the virus has threatened our world in a manner that we haven’t seen in 100 years. The good news is that word freaks such as myself can go crazy trying to make headway through the hodgepodge of corona terminology by coining creative words and phrases to describe our current condition. Here are a few.

Pandemeanies: These are all the self-proclaimed captains of our souls who have stifled a fun-loving population. You know what I mean. You can go to the beach but you can’t partake in any activities that

Rewriting the dictionary for the era of ‘flatten the curve’ and ‘shelter in place’you normally go to the beach for. They’ve taken away movies, ball games, birthday parties, weddings, live theater, concerts and car shows. Another ca-sualty is one of my favorite events, the annual Friends of the Harrison Library book sale, which has been canceled. Please hang on to your book donations until further notice.

Pandemorons: People who dutiful-ly wear protective face masks working at essential jobs then go outside and remove the masks to smoke cigarettes. Hello lung losers whoever you are, your troubles may double real soon.

Faucism: A form of authoritarian ul-tra-treachery characterized by dictatorial power and the forcible suppression of com-

mon sense built upon the total demobili-zation of the economy to prepare a nation for self-destruction. Named for its founder

Benito Fauci who made the trains run on time, but there was no one to ride on them.

CoronaHoarder’sCalamity: This is when a leak in the roof during a heavy rain causes water to soak through 800 rolls of toilet paper stored in the attic. By the way, the toilet paper patent, No. 465,588, sub-mitted in 1891 by Seth Wheeler, solved the

debate on the proper way to hang the roll. Mr. Miller’s ac-companying illustration clearly shows the paper coming over the top.

ChlorohydroxyQuiz: A stimulating way to learn the names of all the treatments being used to combat the coro-navirus. Several of the names of the medications have been added to the forthcoming National Spelling Bee. Can’t wait to hear some 8th grader ask the moderator to use hy-drocholoroquine lopinavir/ritonavir in a sentence.

HauteCouturovirus: This is a hypothetical situation where Kim Jong-Un, the ruler of North Korea dies and leaves his slate gray pantsuits to Hillary Clinton. When asked whether she will wear Kim’s pant suits or rely on her own extensive collection, the former senator/secretary of state/first lady/presidential candidate asked, “What differ-ence does it make?”

CoronaMaskingTape: A very sticky strip put over the mouths of all the politicians demanding we make sacrific-es because we’re all in this together except that they don’t seem to be in it as together as we are. The need for the tape is the result of CoronaVirtueSignaling, when our leaders show off how much more moral they are than everybody else, which has been characterized by a predilection for expensive chocolate ice cream.

CoronaConundrums: If you wash your hands for only 19 seconds, can you go back and wash for one more sec-ond or do you have to start over? Is it against the law to yell “Fire!” in an empty theater?

CoronaSports: You’ve never realized how exciting mumblety-peg tournaments are. You’re so bored you un-mute Dick Vitale. You play hopscotch with the single malt you were saving for a special occasion.

CoronaQuackery: You go into the hospital for hip re-placement surgery and you are put on a ventilator instead. Your hip still hurts but you are breathing better.

CoronaCravat: An inordinate need to wear expensive scarves while telling people to stay home and apply disin-

GERVASEFrom page 8RE

fecting wipes to their sweatpants at least twice a day. CoronaDrone: An unmanned aerial device to warn you

that while sitting alone on a beach reading a book, breath-ing fresh air, you are an existential threat to humanity. Be-cause when has government ever been wrong?

Pandemillennial: A young person who has received permission from the commissar of health to continue free-loading in his parents’ basement for another 30 days.

CoronaQuandary: Wondering whether to spend your

money in a legal, well lighted cannabis shop or slink down a dark alley to get a haircut from a subversive barber.

Pornovirus: Price gouging. CoronaCoupD’etat: When a nation sheepishly allows

power-mad politicians to abolish its rights by subverting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, destroying the peo-ple’s ability to secure the blessings of liberty to themselves and their posterity.
